Pretty much it. Once the 3-point line started really being used, Hibbert’s defense was neutralized and his offense wasn’t nearly enough to carry his game. The 2014 Hawks series was the best example of that, the Pacers probably should’ve lost that series.
Watching that 13/14 team was like watching a car fall apart as it’s driving.
And to be fair, all we had was Ian Mahimni. We didn’t have the personnel to do anything but live or die by Roy. I guess we were lucky to get to B2B conference finals.
But to be fair to Vogel’s gameplan, the Heat didn’t have great shooters. D Wade and Lebron needed to go to the rim and that was where Roy made his money. We were built to compete with the Heat, the best team in the East, despite being out-talented at like 4 positions and we gave them hell. So you gotta let Haslem get some buckets if it means Lebron doesn’t get in a rhythm or get foul shots.
Small ball did change the game and make Roy mean less, but the Pacers were still the 3rd best opponent FG% and 5th best rebounding team the next year after this series, with PG getting hurt and only playing 6 games. Roy was still changing the game, boxing out and playing defense, but the loss of PG didn’t translate those positive stats to wins since our offense was 24th in points.
