Got plenty to discuss on that front as far as you know where they go from here but I want to save most of that for segments two and three so stick around first things first though we just watched a wild one go down tonight verse the Pacers just a back and forth

Slugfest it came down to the wire and I’ll be honest a lot of scares early on by the way with ant kind of getting banged up multiple times he headed to the locker room room a few times he would be okay and they needed everything

They got from him and his 44 points they ended up pulling off a dramatic win and they prove they can still do big things without one of their best players with this 113 111 win as they stay at top the Western Conference by a half game so

Kick us off here Jack give us your biggest takeaways from the wild game that we just watched yeah I mean insert your favorite exclamatory exploitive of choice I mean uh with what you saw from from Anthony Edwards there uh down the stretch of the game he checked back in

With 8 minutes and 22 seconds left yeah and just completely took this game over he scored 16 points in the final 822 of this game um and just did it as a you know High usage uh using all of his energy dribble moves like crazy just

Getting a high ball screen and going to work uh type of play that was just a complete Superstar effort from him for and and he did it efficiently right he took 10 shots to get his 16 points he got to the free throw line five times

And uh and ant didn’t turn it over I think that was my favorite part of Anthony Edwards game tonight had 44 points on north of 50% shooting was three of seven from three had three turn or had three assists and zero turnovers this was a game where all the

Timberwolves were going to do was was spam High pick and roll with Anthony Edwards and Rudy goar with the Pacers being the worst uh defense against pick and roll in the NBA by by quite wide margin actually and and you know they they give up the most point or excuse me

The most amount of opponent shots at The Rim uh so the the if you look at the percent total of an opponent’s total shots coming at The Rim the Pacers are the worst of that at like 36% of of opponent shots coming at The Rim which

Is insane so um just for for the Timberwolves to really Force the Pacers to defend that action and just play off of it I I think was really great I think it’s something that we don’t see a lot from the timber wolves is just continually running actions that they

Know the defense can’t stop forcing the defense to stop it and they had no choice but to do that tonight without Carl Anthony towns and it’s certainly what Anthony Edwards is best at is running that high pick and roll with Rudy goar he’s taking a huge step

Forward both as a score and a playmaker out of pick and roll this season I think you know it took him a little bit of time to to kind of get acclimated with Rudy goar understanding the screening angles that go bear likes to take the timing of all those things it just takes

Time to develop the chemistry and those types of sets those types of little two-man games and and especially when you add in all the the dribble handoffs and when ant’s coming off an off ball screen from gobear and then veers back to flow into a pick and roll like all

Those things take time but but he’s really mastered all that stuff now and and for him to put together that type of effort when this team needs him the most especially after missing uh you know the first few minutes of this game I mean Anthony Edwards he played in 38 minutes

But he probably would have played in 42 or 43 minutes had he been there uh after turning his ankle in the first minute of of this game he missed the first four minutes and and probably could have had 50 tonight uh but but for him to do what

He did given the context no Carl Anthony towns you have an opportunity to really send a message to the league one way or the other about how this team is going to respond without Carl Anthony towns and Anthony Edwards sent a very clear message that that the Timberwolves are

Going to keep on doing their thing and they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with whether they have Carl Anthony towns or not and and given how how much Carl Anthony towns has sacrificed and adapted his game to fit what this team needs and step up for his

Teammates especially on nights when other guys don’t have it like Carl has all year it was pretty cool to see Anthony Edwards Step Up in such a big way uh for Carl Anthony towns in the first game that that he’s missed you know presumably of of a slew here with

That that torn left miniscus yeah an MVP type of performance our guy random Planet who’s always bringing the heat he’s here every night I think we’re going to see ant take it to another level and unlock what he truly is without cat that is kind of a talking

Point is there a chance we just witnessed him potentially take that proverbial leap from great to Elite like we’ve all been waiting for now knowing he’s gonna have to carry the load he’s gonna have to shoulder this team through the playoffs and be that guy now moving forward because again he was phenomenal

Tonight I’m talking like MVP type level type of stuff we just watched and you just hope this momentum now carries forward into the rest of the games ahead right yeah no question I mean the biggest difference between Anthony Edwards and a lot of other you know comparable offensive superstars in the

NBA is that Anthony Edwards is an elite defensive player when he wants to be and you saw that he almost always wants to be late in games no question about it and and when he locks in on the ball he is the timber rol’s best on ball

Defender and the timber rves also have Jaden McDaniels on this team and he is one probably one of the five best perimeter defenders in the NBA and then you saw what an playmaking skills are like when he just sees the ball and wants to go make a play on it with that

Block hit his head on the rim landed on his wrist unbelievable you know it’s just an insane play it’s just it makes you completely understand and just play back in your head all the people comparing Anthony Edwards to Michael Jordan it it’s just unbelievable all the different similarities that there are

And tonight certainly just reminds you of of why everybody makes those cops because it’s not it’s not a far reach it’s it’s insane which is insane that it’s not a far reach we’re talking about one of if not the greatest basketball player to ever live uh obviously

Everyone is going to have to step up now without cat and again we’ll dive deeper into that what it all looks like in segment two but just as tonight goes specifically who really looked like they were taking on a bigger role and maybe played with more you know confidence or

Looked more empowered if you had to pick one guy I think it was jadeen McDaniels right away off the rip um you you know I think some of that obviously was spurred by Anthony Edwards leaving the game and that he’s kind of your main perimeter

Score if you will and that that kind of first lineup that they had with Mike Nelle Jaden and then Kyle and and Rudy you really need Jaden to to kind of pick up his on ball usage and and score off the dribble a little bit more and you

Saw that early on in the game right he had four points and two assists in his in his first stint there in the first quarter uh obviously got into a little bit of foul trouble which derailed things a little bit but but this was the first uh game this season in which

Jadeen McDaniels had at least five points five rebounds and five assists just to kind of give you a a sense I guess of how well-rounded his impact was in terms of you know he had the ball enough and was making enough plays with the ball to get his teammates involved

And get those five assists he was also really active on the glass in the defensive end which is exactly what you need not having another seven foot guy and then twoo right it was really efficient scoring the ball yet uh what do you have here he had 11 points on

Four of seven shooting and again probably would have had more than seven shots if he played another 10 minutes in this game which he would have if he wasn’t in foul trouble so I I certainly think that you could have gotten jadeen McDaniels in there a little bit earlier

To start the fourth quarter to get uh excuse me to get Nas Reed out of the game so that you could then uh close with nas Reed and just allow Jaden to kind of get a little bit more of a scoring uh kind of you know onramp a

Little bit for him just considering that that first lineup that the Wolves shoted out there uh in in the fourth quarter with Mike Conley DJ Warren uh Kyle Anderson nased and Rudy goar just didn’t have a whole lot of juice off the dribble especially from the perimeter

And I think it would have been a a good call to to get Jaden in there earlier to try to you know build up some more of that confidence so you could close the game with nas Reed over Kyle Anderson but it didn’t work out that way and uh

You know I I still think that that Jaden’s got to be really pleased with with the way that he played offensively and hope that you know with him only playing 28 minutes tonight and and wasn’t really all that uh know didn’t have to work all too hard defensively with with nikil Alexander

Walker taking a lot of the minutes on on tyres helbert and then he’ll be pretty fresh and ready to go tomorrow night in uh in Cleveland yeah absolutely was the three-point shooting what they missed the most tonight from cat or or or what was the big issue I guess in that

Department from what you saw like on a tangible level that we can put our finger on seven of 25 28% I mean I guess does that worry you you know moving forward knowing what a huge part of their game three ball is if they’re going to continue to have some long-term

Success what happened tonight you know from behind the arc and and how does losing cat I guess changed things as well yeah I think the guys just miss shots I think they generated a lot of clean looks when you run a bunch of highs spread pick and roll you’re going

To create more Corner three-point opportunities especially against a team that really struggles to defend on the perimeter and is going to be in rotation for a lot of the game again I thought I thought a lot of the 25 looks that they had were clean looks uh the 25 attempts

Is is certainly a Mark that you’d like to see them improve I I obviously think that you you’re certainly going to miss car olymp Town’s three-point shooting but the thing about car Anthony towns is he doesn’t shoot all that many threes he only takes five of them a game and

There’s plenty of games where he’s only taking two or three and we’re sitting here saying dude why are why are you not shooting more threes and so I I think for the Wolves it was simply a function of of Carl not playing obviously but then Monte Morris only played six

Minutes in this game he left uh after the first quarter with left hamstring soreness and did not return and he’s normally a guy that’s going to give you three or four three-point op three-point looks he’s going to create a lot of three-point looks and you know Jaden

Only took one three he’s normally good for three or four and you know I think it’s just kind of a a weird game rotation wise with Monte out Jaden out Carl out where they they just didn’t really adjust and hey I mean the Pacers allow the most amount of shots at The

Rim the wolves did a great job of getting out and running a little bit in transition and and just dominated in the paint with 66 points in the paint so I I think that the Wolves did a good job frankly of not feeling like they had to

Force it and get up a ton of Threes because they were creating a lot of really good looks from from inside the arc right I think you know you can’t really be mad at the Timberwolves shooting you know what what is it here 57% in the paint they took 58 shots in

The paint that is a boatload of shots in the paint I don’t think you’re you’re going to be mad about that too often I you know I I think that you just kind of hope that you get some shooting progression to the mean a little bit tomorrow night if you’re if you’re able

To create the same quality of those looks last one here real quick then we’ll get into some more cat stuff in segment two and three I know the fast break points you know the last two three games kind of got really out of control 19 to zero in back-to-back games two and

Three games ago did that revert kind of back to the norm tonight and what’ you see on that front 11 to 16 it looks like better but still not great I guess I I didn’t hear you I’m sorry oh sorry I was saying fast break points 19 to zero

Did that kind of revert back to the norm a little bit tonight I know that was it was a huge issue two three games ago yeah no question I mean the Tim rolls had eight SEC eight fast break points in the first quarter and a half of this

Game they had seven in the previous three combined so they they certainly got out and ran a little bit more once they got stops especially early in the game I think that that’s something that they’re going to try to do as a as a way to be able to

Replace some of what Carlon towns can do is that they’re not going to run very much with the two Center construct but I think when you get a guy like Kyle Anderson replacing Carl Anthony towns he’s a great guy grabbing and going or grabbing it and taking one dribble and

And firing an outlet pass up the court much better than Carlon towns is at that and you know especially when when you’ve got lineups like nikil Alexander Walker is gonna play more minutes Nas Reed’s gonna play more minutes those are both guys that really love to fly up the

Floor and push it in transition and and who knows maybe you can Empower ant to do a little a little bit more of those things he normally kind of just is a little bit of a chameleon I guess in the sense that he kind of conforms to his

Environment and that when he’s playing with those two bigs and he knows that those guys aren’t pushing all that much I don’t think he’s really looking to get out and transition quite as much but now that they’re I guess in essence playing a little bit smaller have a little bit

More passing and and ability to run up the floor and get up and down I think that they’ll be looking to do that far more than than what they have especially the last the last month or so yeah well said all right plenty more Deep dive including Carl Anthony towns’ injury and

Games with that calf like he did last year and now this I Don’t Know Jack man I it just seems like a sick joke not just him but you know Minnesota sports fans in general with the year the wolves have had you know thus far just start I

Guess with what was your first thoughts your kind of knee-jerk reaction when you first heard the news and where did your mind go yeah I think you know we’ve we all live with that scar tissue every single day and I think that the fact that we’ve gotten to this point in the

Season season without some type of shoe dropping I I think I’ve just carried myself with an anxiety almost every day for the last couple months here just waiting for something to happen because you just feel like you know that something is going to happen because it seemingly always does yeah whenever we

Get any semblance of a nice thing here and yeah it was just a gut punch and and you feel for Carl especially because you know all the tragedy that that you you know that you’ve mentioned I think basketball has been a really helpful outlet for him in terms of having some

Structure and being around all of his teammates and um and especially given the way that he’s really changed and conformed his game um to to fit whatever the team needs of him I I think is is super admirable he’s done everything to push Anthony Edwards out into the

Spotlight and make it clear that this is Anthony Edwards team he supported ant every step of the way it’s been a great teammate um there was a a story today of of a wolves fan on Twitter I believe who sadly lost his mom to um to cancer and and Carl Anthony

Towns I think I saw that yeah saw saw that this happened and donated like $1,500 unprompted to the kids family um I mean it’s just that he’s just an amazing human being and I think you can say whatever you want about him as a basketball player but he he he is first

And foremost an incredible human being and I think we all lose sight of the fact a little bit too quickly that that all these athletes are are human beings just like you and me and and it just sucks especially considering everything that he’s been through over the last

Four years um but but yeah I mean on the floor it you know the the unfortunate reality is that the Timberwolves in a sense have a lot of experience playing without Carl Anthony towns he missed 52 consecutive games last season with that grade three calf terrain and and a lot

Of the Timberwolves same pieces are in place that they had last season and and now they’ll have uh Jaden McDaniels hopefully and Nas Reed hopefully which they did not have in the playoffs last season because of season ending injuries that those two guys suffered so they’re even better

Equipped this year to make up for for a Carl Anthony Town’s absence than uh than they were last season but a little bit of optimism on the Carl Anthony towns front um Adan wowski threw a lot of cold water on the idea that towns would be

Out for the rest of the season oh that’s good uh this morning he said that he used the term if any to describe how much time Carl Anthony towns would miss as a result of this miniscus injury um I mean it’s pretty clear he didn’t play tonight he’s not going to play tomorrow

He’s not with the team I don’t think we didn’t see him on the bench yeah so um but yeah man I mean what do you think what do you think knowing what you know about you know torn meniscus I mean usually a four to six and that’s after

Surgery well I think it all depends I think that you know you can get it trimmed I I think which is something that we’ve seen we saw Jimmy Butler do that with like 20 games left in the season the the one year the wolves are really good um and he came back before

The end of the regular season and he didn’t have all that many issues with his knee long term that’s kind of the play there is if you get it trimmed you have the smaller procedure you can get back quicker but the long-term prospects of playing painfree or not having

Smaller recurring injuries is um you know that the risk of that is much higher and you could get it repaired fully repaired which is I I think three to four months from what I’ve read so that would take him out for the rest of the season obviously but but really

Wouldn’t put in Jeopardy his future I I don’t think of having all these little you know flareups and you know there’s also an a non-surgical option where if the tear really isn’t all that bad or it’s a small tear you’re able to rehab it without surgery and it and it could

In essence be a little bit of a pain tolerance thing okay and Carl Anthony towns could be back I mean as soon as you know the doctors deem it he can play and so I think based on all the different reporting from Shams from woj from John krinski sounds like they’re

Really you know surveying all their different options that they have here and are going to make the one that I think balances out long-term risk with short-term gain I I think you have to find the equilibrium there just because you know this is a a pretty pivotal

Season for the Timberwolves in terms of trying to understand is this core one that they want to keep together long term or is it going to be something sustainable in the playoffs and you know not having Carl Anthony towns is a pretty big Lynch pin for for everything

That they want to do makes it really really tough to evaluate this thing and that was the problem last year right we didn’t really get to evaluate towns and gobear for a full season then they just kind of got thrown into the fire down the stretch into the playoffs when when

Neither guy was remotely close to 100% so it’s just a huge bummer and and you know hopefully he can he can get back on the court as as best he can but but man I I just really hope that Carl Anthony towns doesn’t jeopardize the rest of his career sure because people are

Pressuring him and rushing him to get back this season because we’ve seen like Rob Williams is a recent example of a big man who had his meniscus trimmed and has had a ton of injuries since then and has barely played basketball in the last 18 months so um yeah I think it’s it’s

Just really making sure that he’s making the best decision for him and the good news for towns himself obviously he signed that super Max extension so he he doesn’t have to worry about not getting paid or or you know missing out on a ton of money or anything like that I think

Now the question is just how long is he G to be out because I don’t think people expect him to be out the rest of the the entire season so regular season end playoffs and then it’s just going to be about how how you’re able to make up for

His loss and what are some of the different lovers that that the Wolves can pull uh to try to mitigate some of the you know blowback that will come well well I mean let’s stem off that then I guess and and first by the way

How tricky is that going to be by the way let’s say he does miss the regular season but oh okay he’s ready to come back in the playoffs maybe you’re on kind of a a heater or finally found some chemistry and Rhythm and confidence with what you got now maybe a little tricky

And dicey just to mess with you know a good thing if that is the case once we get there but yeah bigger picture now I guess the first question’s always going to be who’s the you know two or three guys that got to step up the most and I

Guess I mean how do things change as far as what we’re used to watching as fans as far as their identity goes and and you know how they like to win games this season if at all maybe it doesn’t change yeah first of all I I think that the

Timber rolls are GNA run way more pick and roll with Carl Anthony towns out of the picture because Carl Anthony towns doesn’t really like to space to the corner and it’s really difficult to run a ton of pick and roll if you don’t have you know the two guys running the action

And then two guys guys in the corners and and the Wolves just haven’t had a whole lot of that and so you’re going to see a ton of Anthony Edwards and Rudy goar pick and roll like we did last season I think you’re going to see a lot

Of off ball screens to try to get guys like Nas Reed the ball going downhill Anthony Edwards the ball downhill um all right so Adrian wowski actually just tweeted something saying that Carl Anthony towns is going to under understand he’s going to undergo surgery to repair a torn left miniscus and will

Be re-evaluated in a month Mon it’s expected towns will return by early in the Western Conference playoffs so that is from W right now so okay all right so so I would assume that that’s the trimming surgery um we’ll see but uh yeah so at any rate uh the the guys that

Are going to have to step up no question K Kyle Anderson and nzed are are the first two right there just because they’re they’re the ones that are going to backfill the majority of of Carl’s minutes at the four and I I think that those two guys are just they’re they’re

Not going to be able to hide behind having tough nights anymore those those nights are going to be magnified a lot more they’re have they’re both going to have to be really efficient they’re going to have to take care of the basketball and they’re going to have to

Be quick decision makers and ball movers and that’s something that that when they’re optimized they’re playing at their best they do very well we saw that for extended stretches in the first half tonight um and then Jaden McDaniels is certainly going to have to score more we

Saw more of that aggression him getting downhill him you know being willing to attack guys off the dribble being able to cut move without the basketball and and two I I think just being more willing to be involved right I think that sometimes Jaden just kind

Of sits in the corner and and tunes Tunes the game out a little bit and some of that is certainly his teammates fault for not getting him the ball enough but part of it too is he’s just got to have a really aggressive mentality like he

Had in the first half of this game tonight and then on nights where where you get Kyle Anderson or Nas Reed or Rudy goar in foul trouble you’re gonna see TJ Warren play I you know I would not be surprised at all if this 10-day contract turns into a rest of the season

Contract for TJ Warren and I I think that the rotation can get pretty jacked up pretty quickly if if you’re going with this too big look with two of Kyle Rudy and Nas on the court at at all times and then one of them gets in foul

Trouble and then the the next option you have is is a third point guard in Jordan McGloin your identity within that game just has to change quite a bit and so having another guy TJ Warren who’s 68 220 pounds has a super long wingspan that can at least you know show some

Length on the perimeter can rebound the ball a little bit can spread the floor shoot the three we saw him we saw him make a catch and shoot three tonight in the corner which was great and he’s a guy who can attack off the catch too so

I think that he’s just going to be a nice another kind of big Wing small ball five for one or two minutes here and there type of guy that you can throw in if your rotation gets gets jacked up a little bit but then you again you saw

With Monte Morris getting hurt tonight that yeah the rotation can get trickier a lot you know more quickly than it than it does when Carl Anthony towns is out there and so I think the Wolves really got stretched to the limit in terms of

How many guys they can have out or or in foul trouble or injured or whatever the case may be so it’s going to be really interesting to see how Chris Finch manages this rotation down the stretch of the season and you know the good news

Is you got Rudy goar who’s been in there he’s been one of the most consistent players in the NBA this season continues to do it and I don’t think you really got to ask a whole lot else of Anthony Edwards right I mean he understood the assignment uh tonight he he was super

Aggressive was was really quick decision maker with the ball didn’t hold the ball for long periods of time and that’s something that I think not having towns in the game will kind of help almost in a sense is that he can be a ball stopper

At times he can hold the ball for five six seconds not make any decisions catch the ball and weird post up spots in the mid-range and just take forever to make a decision with the ball and can kind of Clogg the floor up a little bit when

When he’s kind of at his worst I guess and obviously when he’s at his best he’s totally contributing to the quick decision making the ball moving the the floor spacing all that stuff but but again tonight the ball movement I thought was a lot better and and the

Timber rolls were able to get out and run a little bit which was important too so you’ve got all these different levers I just laid out that you can pull and and guys you’re going to lean on more but at the end of the day it’s a it’s a
