Check-in on the state of the Mavs at at the end so we’ll talk about where we think they are right now 17 games left and all that so we’ll get into that but uh let’s start here the Mavs get a wire to wire win 127 to 92 the the least

Amount of points the Mavs have allowed in the season the defense no I’m just kidding wait really yeah 92 oh wow okay yeah I think I think on the broadcast he said it was 97 was the lowest the maps have allowed this season nice so 92 was

Was right there but the Mavs just a wire to wire win and honestly I think I mean you it always starts with Luca but it The Bigs played such a big role in this game uh Gafford continues his streak of extended his streak to 28 consecutive

Field goals made which is a record going back to 1997 if you listen to the broadcast you heard that you heard Mark fwell say the entire mouthful of that stat probably eight times throughout the broadcast which I just kept finding funnier and funnier he goes and Derek

They didn’t look ready to go at all and credit to the m I’m just they just came back from a really long West Coast trip so that actually does makes some sense uh they just didn’t look ready to go and the Mavs fallwell said this on the

Broadcast and it was true like you you can say that and it be true and then also say well the Mavs came out and took care of business and dominated and did what they had to do because my God The Bigs were just getting spoonfed down low

And it was easy dunk lobs putbacks actually no putbacks because they both they combined to go I think it was 20 of 20 21 Lively and Gafford yeah not their own putbacks but yeah not their own putbacks but I mean it was just uh I mean type of offense that’s the

Mavericks offensively it’s crazy because they haven’t even been shooting that well from three they didn’t shoot well in this game yeah they didn’t shoot well in this game but the last few games they’ve just been I mean their execution has been on another level they’re just generating so many great looks right now

Which is great to see it’s good to see that side’s coming together and they’re bigs it’s it’s one of these it’s one of these wins where the bigs generate the win because you can just play a different way you can just play send like send somebody down the lane if Luca

Is going to have two on him send somebody in the middle like they do with Lively send somebody and they just if they you can roll at the right timing you can take advantage of so many smaller Defenders Gafford is amazing at playing teams like the Pistons and the

Bulls that are small and don’t shoot well it’s like those it’s like the combination of both those two things if you don’t have good spacing and you’re small overall I mean V isn’t small but overall they’re small then all of a sudden you get V on a switch and

Gafford’s against like a smaller Defender IOD dumu or Alex Caruso even or whoever else under underneath he just gets the ball and finishes over top he he’s very good at playing teams like that and the Mavericks haven’t really had somebody like that in a while so

This is one of those where you go man the Mavs finally getting centers changed a way that they can get a win like this where how many times have we heard you know what it was just not the Mavericks night they just didn’t have it they just

Couldn’t figure it out they just got beat down low they you know they allowed 60 points in the paint like the Mavs scored tonight like how many times the Mavs been on the other end of one of these wins and now on on this end of one

Just tell even Drummond like Drummond doesn’t bring it offensively like a like a Gafford does I mean gafford’s hands too it’s just he catches some of these like passes in the short roll in traffic yes it’s pretty impressive that he holds on to it and is able to go back up with

It uh and Luca just gets him Luca and him have some great chemistry I think him going into the starting lineup was something that we were all a little like maybe that’s a unfair to Lively or whatever the case may be but him and Luca have a definite connection that

Works really well I don’t think LCA cares I think if you can catch I think if you can catch the ball I don’t think he cares who who’s starting with him right it’s like and he’ll throw it and he’s like Luca knew immediately that Gafford had good hands CU he would chuck

Those like full court Outlet passes right at him in traffic those you know those football like Hail Mary bomb passes that he would throw to him and that’s the sign of I think I can trust this guy to catch this ball in traffic where he doesn’t do that with everybody

Well I I wonder if that’s because it feels like a newer thing that the Mavs bigs are out in transition so much so I wonder if they had a it’s because they’re fast and they’re athletic and young I know but I’m saying like in the last couple of weeks I wonder if there

Was more of like an adjustment that’s like hey if you guys get caught out on the perimeter don’t even worry about crashing the glass see if you can get out and and run and Luca catches a rebound you know you’re going to be down the court no one’s going to catch up to

You because it feels like they get like three or four of those opportunities a game now yeah to just leak out or maybe it maybe it’s part of their thing where whoever the farthest is the one player that’s the farthest away from the play Yeah because sometimes it’s Josh

Sometimes Derrick Jones Jr and then yeah sometimes it has been The Bigs and The Bigs are just the biggest Target down there uh pun intended and so yeah I I thought that The Bigs really changed this game allowed the Mavericks to play the way they wanted to and then I mean

Just Luca’s passing 14 assists for Luca he could have had more uh only played 33 minutes he was just I mean he was ripping apart the Bulls at times with his passing he’s his last two games have just been an absolute I mean most games for Luka are master classes but his last

Two games against the Bulls and the Pistons you do what you’re supposed to do as a superstar which is come out against these teams and just they have nobody who has a chance of stopping you even though the Bulls have Caruso they still don’t have anybody and they had

Caruso and Kyrie for most of the game anyways but uh you know you come out and take care of business and you eat everyone else eats I mean it’s been a master class and the Bulls did really well defending Luca the first time it’s just now they have different options

There you know the Bulls didn’t play very well at all I mean the Mavs executed like you mentioned earlier the Mavs did execute but the Bulls did not play this game very very well at all and then when you’re when you’re seven of 34 from three shooting 20% I mean I don’t

Think you’re going to put 100% defensive effort in a you’re you’re down 30 for the whole game I don’t think you’re yeah as lock as locked in this was a 30-point blowout almost immediately well they went up by 10 with like in like within five minutes and the

Bulls never got within 10 the whole rest of the game that’s crazy it’s funny because in my chat during the game people were like the Bulls had I think a 70 run to start the second quarter and everyone was like here here it goes like

This team is a joke and I’m like guys I think I I I get where you’re coming from but I think we’re okay today conditioned we’re just conditioned to believe that I was I was sitting there and like Mike Leslie from WFAA tweeted and the game

Was on WFAA and he was like yeah just a great win for the Mavericks and there was like 11 minutes and 40 seconds left in the fourth I was like man I think too many people trying to say that this game is over I was saying it like halfway

Through the third quarter I was like get them all out like this is the Hardy plays the next 15 minutes of game time coming up Luca didn’t go out right away what do we think about that and the streak of his triple doubles and all that we’ll talk about that how the

Out there he only had 24 points so he got a three and then stayed out there I just think you are playing with fire at that point and at this point in the season Luca like something as freak as he goes up for a three and lands on

Someone’s leg weird and tweaks an ankle now he’s out a week and a half like at this point in the season that would be catastrophic for you so I don’t love it and I gota stand on business because in the summer I said I didn’t like some of

Lcas minutes uh in the World Cup whenever slovania was already eliminated and I got destroyed for saying that I said hey guys I’ll say the same thing during the Maverick season so here we go okay I’m gonna go the I’m gonna the opposite way all right that’s trusting

There taking threes and he missed nine of them in this game so it just wasn’t meant to be rebound one I’m I I don’t know if they were fully aware of the record I’m assuming they were that they they had to be he was he was so hunting

That rebound yeah that he would that triple double would have been the first time anyone’s had what was it four 30 point triple doubles in a row or five whatever whatever it was whatever crazy stat it was uh that one is okay you already have the record in this one you

Know now we’re going for the most triple doubles in a row he only needs five more five more triple doubles in a row yeah yeah it’s a it’s a different streak that continues which streak do you care about more gafford’s consecutive made field goals or Luca’s now 20 point triple

Double streak uh The Gafford field goal one is kind of crazy man to go I want him to reach 30 like I want him to hit 30 2 now 28 I mean that is just nuts how like not even blowing a bunny like smoking a bunny or you know getting

Fouled and no and a no call like that’s kind of or a tipin like that’s kind of crazy but I would say Lucas triple double streak would be a little bit more historic I think you think that one’s more impressive well because like d dunking 28 times in a row like Derek

Like the list of the I mean the field goal streak is unbelievably incredible like I’m not trying to take anything away from it but it was like Derrick favers like of Rim Runner guys listen I’m not trying to take anything away from it but there’s trash

Players at the top of this no derck fav was not trash he was pretty good back in the day but uh no he wasn’t he he he was pretty good the triple double streak is pretty crazy uh Tim Hardway no first quarter minutes again in the G in this

Game then played almost the entire second quarter but what you think about kid moving away from him even more now okay maybe it’s just my imagination I feel like Tim’s been playing pretty good the last couple games but like in more in the flow of the offense like he nice passes this is

What happens when the map start winning games everything starts looking better your coffee tastes better in the morning well I’m wondering if it like something got Tim it’s like hey dude the just chunking up terrible shots outside of the flo of the offense is not going to

Fly anymore he went one of4 his shot selection has been better and I I even said that in the last game against the that’s all I care about really is the shots that he’s taking he’s he has like one or two a game that he takes that you

Just go what are you thinking but this game he only took four shots made four assists in this game his passing has been better he is honestly better at entry passes to bigs and alute passes than he is just a normal on the perimeter swing pass pass yeah his entry

Passes confounds me how good he is at entry passes cuz he hit Lively and Gafford tonight yeah no it’s uh like that my thing with Tim is a shooting slump is one thing a shooting slump where you’re out of the flow of the offense entirely and trying to force

Things is when you really really start to hurt the team and I don’t think he’s done that and it’s been limited minutes so maybe that’s why but I I can’t even though he’s still not shooting well I I can’t get like as mad at him as I you

Know I feel like some of the the vital towards him has gotten a little too far in the past well yeah well yeah because because now he’s not playing 30 minutes a game he’s been playing 18 to 20 minutes a game 14 to 20 minutes a game

Really and if you’re playing at that level it’s different than if you’re playing a 30 minute because then more is required of you right I mean you just Spider-Man it up well that’s why I’ve been saying like I don’t know if I said it on the show but I was saying in

General I don’t like get mad at Players like Tim anymore because it’s like he’s been with the team for like five years like we know who he is the front office knows who he is the coaching staff knows who he is if he’s out there and struggling yeah is frustrating but

Ultimately it’s not Tim’s fault he’s on the court you know it’s up to the the coaching staff to limit the minutes whenever if it feels like a player is detrimental to your team and um that’s started to happen this stat the Mavs PR just tweeted out they tweeted out Lively

So Lively we didn’t even talk about him 22 points and Gafford 20 points they combined for 20 of 21 from the field the last pair of teammates you’ll never guess who these two are the last pair of teammates to each score 20 points while combining to shoot 95% from the field

Supposed to between now and the end of the season I think you can be the six seed pretty easily with the five seed still a possibility um you’ve got the three games against the Warriors and Steph Curry’s dealing with this injury too so that is maybe a little bit of a

Break that you catch there yeah because I mean they play the warriors on Wednesday so we’ll see I I had some confusing you you don’t think he’s gonna play I some people in my chat were saying that he was already ruled out and I don’t know if that’s true or not I

Couldn’t find it but um either way yeah those are going to be some huge games against the Warriors and if you even if you win on Wednesday that puts your lead over them up to I think three and a half games which feels kind of significant at

This point in the season um but yeah I think if you Warriors played tonight and they won and Steph did not play yeah yeah uh so I don’t think he’s gonna play on Wednesday if he didn’t play today it’ll be and I’m actually interested to see how they how they approach that

Because if he’s if they treat that more of like a playoff game because of seeding and stuff like that if they’re more willing to put him out there or I think yeah I think at this stage in the Warriors life cycle and Seth’s career it’s just like you know if we’re in the

Plane we’re in the plane honestly as long as Steph’s healthy it’s what matters more than anything that Mavs game though could mean a lot to them because they could they got three games yeah that’s what I’m saying so I’m interested to see how they handle that

If it’s like a must-win we need Steph back at all cost type of thing but I think you can catch the Kings I’m I you play the Kings twice one of them’s on a back toback we played the Kings four times this year three of them the Mavs

Are on the second of back toback what is that scheduling that is terrible but uh I I don’t think they’re very good I’m gonna stand on that I do not the kings are the polar bear in Arlington when you look at this top 10 seating in the west

I’m sorry I come off like a hater I watch almost every Kings game because of these seatings and I’m just like how are they still in this mix man uh yeah they’re they’re catchable for sure but it it is going to be tough yeah try and try and figure that out but

They’re basically tied right now like you said they got the two more games against them and with the state the state of the Mavericks right now uh I’m still concerned about their defense falling out at any at any given moment they’ve they’ve succeeded against some of these teams where they don’t have the

Super Dynamic one player that can attack and that can you know take advantage of and like make all the passes like what we saw halberton do to the Mavericks that he just ripped them apart so much that you go man like this is this is brutal but they are getting some nice

Wins under their belt and they’re kind of riding this ship at least uh I’m just nervous about their their defensive rotations throughout the the next stretch but the rest of the season they at least have enough winnable games that you feel good about where they are yeah

I mean even tonight their best defensive performance of the Season there was some pretty good looks for the Bulls that just didn’t drop and that’s that’s some shooting luck thing because even during your defensive stretch where you’re terrible there was some shooting stats they like okay this is like sure your

Defense was awful but there’s some insane shooting bad shooting like happening currently because I think I was looking at some stats they’re the they opponents are shooting like 58% on Long twos which is just like a stupid number in today’s NBA so there was some bad shooting like over that stretch but

Yeah their defense is always a concern I mean until we until I see their defense be good for like five straight months one bad defensive game is gonna be like oh yeah here they go five months yeah that’s a that’s what was a like what was a okay 2022 but

Before that what was last time this team had a good defense but even then they feel like their defense didn’t really kick in until the second half of the Season yeah it was that was it that’s what I’m saying give me five months of being a good defense before it could be

Game four of the finals and the Mavs are about to sweep it and they have a bad defensive game and I’m like yep here it comes guys here it is here this is this is your Mavs yeah the bottoms falling out guys oh um man oh I asked this question

To Reggie and I’m curious to your answer to it if you had one of the things I think the Mavs need to do the last stretch of the season is to develop confidence in some of their role players and so that’s why I think Tim’s still getting minutes for those that have have

Wondered they’re still giving PJ PJ Washington a lot you some opportunities on offense if you had to pick one of the two let’s say you have a 25 minute per game roll and you have like a 12 minute per game rle would you give the bigger

Role the last stretch of the season to Derrick Jones Jr or Josh Green so that’s your choice because I think they I think they got to build one of them up before the end of the season I mean Derrik Jones Jor is profiles more as a player you you will need I think

Defensively in the playoffs defensively because you’re gonna have to have somebody who you really trust point of attack getting over screens flying around the court and Josh green has just really kind of struggled in that department it feels like J J 205 from three in tonight’s

Game too yeah and we were talking about earlier in the season when Derrick Jones Jor was hot from three like yeah this is a guy who’s a playoff player yeah and yeah if his three ball is falling he for sure is I could see him having like a

Similar to like Reggie Bullock type role Reggie Bullock played 40 plus minutes a game in that playoff run and he sometimes he shoots like Reggie Bullock in October and sometimes he shoots like Reggie Bullock in March true he looks more confident right now though too that’s that’s one of the things the shots

Quick which is nice to see he’s taken not completely wideopen threes like there’s been a couple where he’s the players closed out on him and he still takes it instead of you know stopping and driving which I think is a sign of confidence too I think I would go with

Derrick Jones Jr too because of because of his ability to defend I think he gives them a better point of attack Defender and I don’t think you can build confidence in your ability to go around screens like I think that’s something that you learn and that you work through
