What the improving Pascal Siakam + Tyrese Haliburton duo did to lead Indiana Pacers past Pelicans

More like pelicant Pacers beat the Pelicans continue to be one of the more confusing teams in the NBA with a very high level how’ they get it done why it was a game about the Stars to me and so much more coming on today’s lockon Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers

Your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day Happy Thursday y’all and welcome into another edition of the lockon Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name’s Tony East I cover the team for Forbes and Si and today it’s a leap day that’s cool the Pacers beat the Pelicans last

Night it was a sweet game with some highlights and some clutch play and much much to talk about as the Pacers do they lose to the Raptors but beat the Mavs by double digits and barely don’t beat the Pelicans by double digits during their home weirdest team but their high level

Was high again on Wednesday as they beat New Orleans in their place the first quarter got it done if you just looked at the box score if you just at the final score you would not know this game Flow is extremely weird and I have a lot

To talk about from the game Flow perspective because going through the game chronologically will actually kind of tell you how everyone on the Pacers was so important to this win And yet when we zoom out and talk about this game what I think is a key focus is

The stars of course lots of guys had really good games and we’ll talk about them but something about Pascal seak and Tyrus Halbert in this game the twinkle in their eyes the way they were playing off of each other to me is the story and takeaway from this game the final score

If you didn’t see it yet was 123 114 it looks like a nine-point Pacers win what really happened is the Pacers were so ridiculously good in the the first quarter 40 points they only allowed 24 and it was really this late quarter Surge from this lineup That was four

Bench players in tyres Halbert they were up five pretty like far into the quarter like four minutes to go in the first quarter I think this was a five-point game I’m double- cheing as I’m talking yeah the Pacers were up 20-4 uh excuse me 21-6 with four minutes

To go in the first quarter they scored 19 points in the final four minutes of this quarter with this lineup That was tyres halberton Jaylen Smith Ben Shepard uh Miles Turner came back in for Jones Smith that stretch Obi toppen uh and I can’t and TJ McConnell and that group

Was just ridiculously good for the final stretch they scored on almost every possession they got a bunch of stops I’ve been an admirer of the Halbert and plus bench groups for a lot of this season and it was absolutely crushing crushing in that frame the Pelicans had

No answers and that was a huge stretch in a huge part of the game that they again went on a massive run to close the first quarter and that matters so much because the Pelicans outscored the Pacers in the second quarter they were much better for the middle part of that

Quarter the Pelicans outscored the Pacers in the third quarter it was pretty even back in fourth quarter but the Pelicans were slightly better the Pelicans outscored the Pacers in the fourth quarter again it was closer and even but there were stretches where the Pelicans were better they got it to

Three with a couple minutes to go in the fourth quarter I actually was texting with somebody at the game and I said I think the Pelicans are going to win this and I was wrong and I’ll explain why in a minute but that game Flow is necessary

To know the Pacers won this game by being far superior than the Pelicans in the first quarter and more specifically with the halberton plus bench group that closed out said first quarter and the rest of the game was all just kind of about timely moments and getting momentum right and everybody was

Significant in in doing that I have a little bit of a note on just about every single player who had timely plays while I also look up what that lineup of halberton plus the bench was from this game but it was uh it was very impressive to me to see kind of every

Single Pacers player step up in that way uh so first let’s start with Andrew nard Andrew nard his big contribution in timely plays and stopping runs was hitting shots from the corners he had a three at least Corner jumpers going in fact he was three for seven for the game

Two for two from three both Corner threes uh eight points four rebounds even plus minus hit timely shots in big moments from the corners that’s what they need him to do talked about his three-point shooting being so critical in this game yesterday he hit two important threes in this game his

Defense did not quite reach the impact I thought it would although CJ McCollum nine for 21 on his way to 23 points Andrew nehar did kind of have the game I thought he would have in this win but the timely shots from him were really important Ben Maan his timely moment was

The late third quarter stretch where he saved the Pacers butts this might sound like hyperbole but throughout the third quarter the Pelicans were really chipping at the Pacers lead that was a one point as high as I want to say 16 or 17 at the time they got it to five for

Example with seven and a half minutes to go they kept it within like 79 fiveish for so many stretches of that quarter and then late in the frame after they get it to seven with three minutes to go some subs come in Ben maen N9 foot

Pull-up shot with a minute 24 to go a pull up three with a minute to go a step back three with 30 seconds to go and so even though the Pelicans were scoring like crazy in those final minutes of that quarter their seven-point lead for

The Pacers got up to 10 and it was at 1.6 16 in that stretch that was huge right because the Pelicans were scoring so much that is when the Pelicans could have actually came back and tied the game or made it really interesting instead Ben Maan was awesome in those

Moments his total statline for the night wasn’t Sensational uh he finished six for 17 with 16 points but that stretch he was four for n from Deep for the night that stretch was huge his pull-up three in general during this home stand changed several games for this Pacers

Team the pension general you know part of that was that with Halbert and group part of that was was just the raw bench group and Jake Madison and I have locked on Pelicans talked about this yesterday you know the bench battle being critical and the Pacers was better right their

Depth against a team that is proud of its depth was better Jaylen Smith had a lot of key plays he was good on defense they were doing something specific and we’ll actually praise Miles Turner for this in a moment whereas a lot of jayen Smith was in when Larry Nance was in and

Miles Turner was in when Zion was in valent chuna has only played seven minutes seven minutes for the Pelicans um I don’t know if he hurt or something but that was significant that Jaylen Smith was F fighting so well in that matchup TJ McConnell did TJ McConnell things nine assists no turnovers eight

Points Ben Shepard we’ll get to him in a second because he was phenomenal Obi toppen has his own note for me that just say Obie all night he played a lot in this game uh not a lot a lot but 23 minutes and 51 seconds that was the

Second most of any bench player he hit his threes he grabbed rebounds he had 16 points he had two blocks he had no turnovers Obi toppen was really good Rick Carlos after the game he couldn’t find a reason to take him off the floor and you don’t look for reasons to to

Bench a player if you’re a coach but he played him a lot right he played him for a significant number of minutes in this game in lineups that were you know unique in this instance and the other thing he did is he didn’t do awesome in

This match up but he did good enough he defended Brandon Ingram for like kind of significant stretches of the game Ingram was really cooking in the early fourth quarter that’s where he got his scoring points up he finished with 30 but it took him 20 shots to do it 13 free

Throws was Ingram thing he was eight for 20 from the field though Obi defended him pretty well deserves a ton of credit for some timely defense after an early fourth quarter stretch with Ingram cooking Obi top and locks up and does much better defensively for the rest of

That quarter Miles Turner his his timely moments his credit cookies whatever you want to call it were his defense defense on Zion two blocks I believe they were both on Zion Williams to dunks at The Rim didn’t fell out of a game Rick Carla was talking about how specific and

Unique the game plan to defend a guy like Zion Williamson can be he’s just so powerful he’s such a beast going to to the rim you need teamwork you need power you need timing you got to be ready for it and Miles Turner who is defending him

Often not all the time but often did a very good job their minutes were very often paired and Miles deserves a ton of credit for that he had a double double he got 10 boards as well he’s been good on the glass of late on his way to 14

Points and the last guy who meets the game Flow category of timely plays Mr Ben Shepard who has who has certainly turned the tide of the argument of who should be the 10th man for the rest of the season seon I don’t think there’s an argument it shouldn’t be Ben Shepard I

Think he’s earned the right to play over McDermot for the fully healthy Pacers with his shooting and defense I don’t think that’s up for debate at this moment if his shot you know goes back to what it was earlier in the season maybe it’s a discussion but man has he been

Good for the I mean that Raptor game before the breaks where this started but this whole home stand really since the road trip they had right before they traded for seaka when they started to play him a lot he’s just become such a reliable you know what you’re going to

Get player for the Pacers who can now actually make his threes that was always the missing link for Ben Shepard tonight 11 points plus seven two steals one block no turnover and he hit three outside shots he’s good 26 and a half minutes for Ben Sheard he played More

Than Miles Turner minutes wise in this game granted Turner had foul trouble issues but like that’s how much they’re relying on him and N Smith and mcder were both out so like of course they’re going to need to play Ben Sheard a bunch but they played Ben Maad a ton Monday

Night for example you know they could have relied more on some other guys nard maybe playing more maen playing a ton more and they were comfortable and rightly so playing Ben Shepard a bunch and he made it payoff everybody with timely plays all night was required whether it was threes whether it was

Stopping a star on the other team whether it was making the right plays on defense like Jaylen Smith everybody had to do something and they did it and that’s how the Pacers won this game and yet I still think the clutch play that we haven’t even got to yet one

Highlights the story of this game and two leads to a bigger conversation about Pascal seak and tyres hurn and their effectiveness for this Pacers team and that’s coming right up in just a second here on the lock on Pacers podcast but first got to talk about eBay Motors our

Talk more about the buyout market tomorrow on lock on Pacers because that’s March 1 that’s the last day maybe some late candidates will come in but then we can really dive into what the Pacers should do with their 15th and final roster spot today we are going to

Keep talking about the Pacers win over the pel and I just talked about timely plays for lots of guys and none of the guys I mentioned intentionally or Pascal seak or Tyrese Halburn because I wanted to save that conversation for its own thing the whole game I mean if you pull

Up the game chart tab on nba.com you can see you know where what the Pacers lead was throughout the game and watch it go from 20 in the second quarter and it trickles down to six and then it gets up to 15 so their top lead is higher then

It gets down to five and then it gets back up to like 12 and then it gets down to three and then they hold on to win the whole game was like that where the Pelicans would into it and the Pacers would respond and over and over and over

Again but the part the Pacers lead at the lowest point of every Pelicans run kept getting smaller and smaller they were running out of time and that slow drip like I was talking about earlier made it feel like the Pelicans could come back they were playing better than

The Pacers for the last like 36 minutes of this game in total there were obviously stretches where the Pacers were the better te team and the Pacers were so much better in the first quarter that results wise it didn’t matter but it felt like it could matter and that’s

Why when CJ McCollum scored with three minutes and 15 seconds to go to cut the Pacers lead to three points I thought oh boy this could be a tough one for the Pacers to swallow after their big first quarter Miles Turner had just come in Zion Williamson had just come in with

324 to go it felt like a chance for the Pelicans to win this game here’s what happened for the next two minutes of basketball two minutes minutes and 57 seconds to go bang Tyrese Halbert and drills a three CJ McCollum misses on the other end uh but on a a Scramble for the

Loose ball Miles Turner fouls herb Jones he hits the free throws uh and then the next Pacers possession Tyrese halber time tiing down pressured away from the play flings a pass into Pascal cakam for a layup Pacers now up six Z Williamson misses good defense on the Pacers they

Get the rebound next possession they bleed a bunch of clock boom tyes hurn hit Pascal yakum for a dunk they forc a stop on a CJ McCollum lab Miles Turner grabs the rebound his 10th of the game and one second later boom Pascal seak scores the other end beautiful pass from

Tyres halberton once again and all of a sudden with a minute and 17 seconds to go the Pacers are up by 10 they were up three less than two minutes before that and it felt like the game was slipping from their hands and for two minutes outside of one foul fighting for a

Rebound they were awesome and the two stars were the ones who got it done Halburn hit the three which he needed that he was having a sluggish night and I’ll talk about his statistical night because I saw some misguided I think commentary about his performance but then as the pressure

Ramped up he found the right guy and that guy was Pascal yakum down the stretch here’s why I think the the halberton commentary from this game was relatively mcad actually had this interaction with a fan uh during the game and and halberton statline certainly pedestrian for his standards

Right s for 15 17 points 13 assists but he was plus 11 they were kicking butt in Hal bur’s minutes so here’s what what my assessment of it going on was I mean I’m sure many could disagree herb Jones among the NBA’s best defenders for my

Money a first team all defense guy right herb Jones was on him a lot and the Pelicans would routinely send a second player when they were actions involving halberton to deter him from doing anything it’s not like he was just not doing anything it’s just he was making

The pass because there were fouron three situations elsewhere that’s why he had 13 assists and so obviously until late in the game right the first couple quarters he was not shooting well and that makes his numbers look bad so what my assessment of this game was is that

Was it he was just shooting poorly he was doing everything else in terms of creating shots running the offense pretty well and as if you’re watching the Pacers a lot you know SE yakum had five assists in this game he was handling the ball a bit more he had 24

Points and we’ll talk about that in a second too they were using Halburn as a screener more you’ve seen that kind of evolve because I asked him about this after the game right buddy hee used to be that guard screener and Alberton thinks he’s a pretty good screener for a

Guard and then he’s the best shooter now of their perimeter players so him being that screener that forces defense to panic when he pops off a screen or goes screens is really valuable especially when seak has the ball so they would clear out the wings they would give them

Space to run that pick and roll the one4 stuff and SE yakum would either have space or hurn would be open and so if hurn is getting all that attention he shouldn’t be shooting he should be passing and so he was just missing until the late in the game when he was not

Missing and was instead taking over the game so that is my assessment of his night was not that he was playing poorly I think he played poorly against the Raptors and I said so two days ago on the show I don’t think he played poorly tonight and he really ramped it up late

But herb Jones was amazing and that was a big part of this you could even look at the Box SC after the game this is this is the perfect explanation of this Pelicans loss herb Jones played 38 and a half minutes in this game that’s a ton

That was the most of any player on other team and he was plus eight for the night the Pelicans lost by nine so that means in the nine and a half minutes that herb Jones was not on the floor for New Orleans they lost by 17 in nine and a

Half minutes right that is how much they relied on him some of that’s Trey Murphy some of that’s Jordan Hawkins some of that’s Brandon Ingram whoever is playing his deao role as their key stopper on the floor or trying to guard whoever they just needed him he’s so good he is

Such a good player he’s such a good Defender and you saw that in this game and it was really impacting halberton but halberton got it done late and that was huge for the Pacers and quite frankly something they should expect he is a very good clutch player he always

Has been and despite struggling for much of this game when it mattered he was awesome he had seven points and four assists in the fourth quarter of this game right over so he had 10 points and nine assists entering the final quarter and he just stepped up when it mattered

And sakam of course did too I he actually made the shots they were all extremely easy and that’s credit to Tyrese Halbert in those instances but played a very good game as well and I want to talk about their pairing in just a second but I also want to really drift

Into some sakam talk because he took 18 shots he had 24 points 11 rebounds and he wasn’t even hitting his three he missed every single one of this game five assists for SE yakum it does not take a genius to look at the game log of Pacers recent games 24 for SE yakum

Tonight and he was looking for a shot 22 shots against the Raptors on Monday he had 27 points he didn’t have to do as much against Dallas because other guys were cooking uh including tyes halberton Detroit 20 points 16 shots 17 shots against the Raptors 23 points that game

Right before the break the three games before that he did not crack 20 points and in order he took 11 shots against the Warriors 13 against the Knicks and 12 against the Hornets and if you’ll recall listening to this podcast during that stretch I remember saying and I

This was a very common refrain or commentary whatever from fans was get past kakum the ball that dude’s good right he should be shooting more and he clearly is is right now and that stretch was extremely low in terms of his volume because right before that stretch of

Three games you know he had that 29-point game against Houston where he was extremely good he had a 25-point game against Charlotte right he’s had phenomenal games and gotten the ball plenty against the Pacers they had that stretch where they just drifted away from him a bit they’re getting back to

Him he’s figuring out where he can be more comfortable with this team where his shots are going to come from he’s figuring out how his pairing with Tyrese halberton is going to work and you’re seeing that really evolve in these recent games in a way that’s been significant for his involvement for him

Getting good shots either with good matchups or from spots that he likes and in a way that him and halberton can make defenses panic and make other guys have good shots that pairing is evolving in a way that is significant for the Pacers and they were massive absolutely massive in the clutch

Of this game a clinic if you will of clutch play from the Pacers who win who are right in the thick of the standings we’ll talk about that in just a second and the Halbert and seak comparing Pacers Pelicans again on Friday so plenty more to discuss from this game

Free at grammarly.com podcast that’s GM RL y.com podcast easier said done back here on lockon Pacers thanks for making us your first listen today and every single day of course check out lockon Pelicans for your second listen Jake Madison I’m sure I’ll have lot to say about the Pelicans about their

Really crummy start to this game and many more things met some fans again at games I forgot to do this at Monday’s game I met two people who share my last name Dennis and Don East great to meet you and there’s a fan in the section

Right by me who got my attention told me who was a listener that was very very nice to hear fun game for the Pacers to win they are now technically technically not in fifth in the East uh but they’re in a are in a three-way tie with the

Sixers and heat in terms of they are all 13 games back of first place they’re all equally far back from whatever team is in front of them but the Pacers have one more win and one more loss than both of those teams so percentage points wise

The Pacers are in seventh and they are half a game ahead of the magic Sixers in free fall B they have an easy game coming up against the Hornets but after that we will see I think the Pacers best standings BET right this second this could change if the heat get wobbly the

Heat have won five in a row um but is is getting sixth by holding off the magic and 76ers but that is of course going to be dynamic Pacers have a road heavy schedule coming up in March so everyone they get will be important and tracking

The magic and the Sixers over the next few weeks will also of course be critical all right let’s keep going on Pacers Pelicans very fun game and let’s talk about the cakam Halbert and Duo who of course closed this game out together you can see their chemistry growing

Together and I talked about it a little bit I asked them about it after the game so if you watch oppressors anywhere you can get them you can hear them talk about working with each other the one 14 pick and rolls how they’re kind of figuring out who should be creating and

When and how to get those shots up and you saw that growing at first but it was tough like SE yakum starts playing halton’s out then he’s playing but he’s limited with only 20 minutes a game and so it’s different guards and it’s different lineups and it’s hard to grow

Chemistry that way and you know they had three practices after the All-Star break like that’s huge huge in terms of like getting that Rhythm and talking things through and when there’s no opponent it’s just you guys figuring it out figuring out how those spots work especially within the context of your

Offense where you like stuff it’s just easier to communicate in those settings the first practice yakum had instantly made him you know have a bigger impact same thing kind of happened for McDermot now they’ve had several right and that’s helped quite a bit and you can see them

Working well together so let’s talk some snats baby let’s talk some numbers and then you can contextualize a couple things that I’ve been talking about RAC the Pacers entering today with sakam and tyres Halburn on the floor 308 minutes Pacers net rating plus 3.4 really good offense me defense but plus 3.4 net

Rating is very good right and that is with opponent shooting pretty well especially from two-point range so I expect that to get a little better and I’ll talk about why I think it needs to in just a second with sakam on the floor and halberton not on the floor the

Pacers in 288 minutes plus 4.4 net rating very good they can survive survive with one star really great offensive rating probably unsustainably hot really not good defensive rating but definitely unsustainably hot two-point shooting from opponents in those instances but still good in that rating with Halbert non sakoff this is a ton of

Minutes this includes the whole season and I’ll change this query just a second Pacers are plus 5.6 phenomenal offense bad defense and with both of them off minus four net rating crummy offense and defense which is noteworthy because the thing that I’ve been talking about is a

Big storyline for the second half air quotes half of the season coming out of the All-Star break is can the Pacers bench be better because they’re going to win the minutes with the Stars on the floor and that’s why I think it’s so interesting that Carlile turned to that

Halbert and plus bench group at the end of the first quarter that was a thing early in the season and we haven’t seen it as much as the season progressed for various reasons injuries rotational changes trades but I think it’s a good group and you can go SE yakum plus bench

Then in the middle of the second quarter then get the starters back in there’s a lot of ways it could go and I’m rambling but even if you just include games with both that Halbert and seak both played right so you’re not counting the stretch of the Season before SE yakum got here

And you’re not counting those games where halberton was out and sakam played you know you get a great number with Halbert Nan sakam off you get a great number with both of them on the same one I already said a worse number with sakam on Halbert knof their defense has been

Atrocious in those minutes which is very surprising to me and then an awful number an absolutely atrocious minus 7.7 with neither of them on that’s games again that they both played in so what stands out about this one is I think you’re if you’re the Pacers stagger them

Right play them a lot together because those minutes have been good and I think that’s the second key number we’ll get to that in a second is getting that one up but stagger them if one of those guys is on the floor your floor as a team is

High right um but takeaway two would be their bench when neither of them are on which is fine for a few minutes they have a good enough bench other players positionally make sense has to be better it it cannot be this bad now numbers wise this will go up their offensive

Rating in 125 minutes with neither seak M Turner on the floor in games they’ both played in for the Pacers is 105.9 it’s going to it’s it’s going to be better than that awful from two below 33% from three and I know the shooting of that second unit isn’t awesome but

That’s going to be better right it just is so that will help a little bit and and that’s what we’ve talked about that bench group has to be better and I think it will be um so the the there’s two numbers I think need to improve for the

Pacers just looking at the star numbers one is of course that bench number the other one is the seak and halber non-number 3.4 is good but I would expect that to be closer to like four or five given how talented those players are and I think you’ve seen the seeds of

Them playing well together playing off of each other and how that can make that number go from what it was and what it is entering today to what it can be one day which is much better they were both very good in this game they were both very good playing together playing off

Of each other in key moments and the Pelicans really struggled with it it’s really hard to play fouron three defensively against the Pacers when Pascal cakam is the initiator right he can score he can shoot over you he can pass it’s just very hard so that is I

Think the thing that stands out to me the most from this game is you can you can get into the nitty-gritty and I did about all the important players and roles that guys stepped up into and the Pacers don’t win this game without them I don’t want to diminish what they’re

Saying but the key long-term takeaway especially in those clutch moments was this is what the Pacers Stars tyres hurn and Pascal sakam can do together against a good team I believe I will double check the Pelicans are a top 10 defense Pacers tore them up for most of this

Game 40 points in the first quarter massive clutch success yes the Pelicans uh entered the day oh I’m not I’m not good at using this in sixth in defensive rating and the Pacers found ways to score on them to score 123 points against them and to carve them up in key

Moments that says a lot about where they are that says a lot about the growth of the Pacers to to this point in the season and to me potentially where they’re headed now that they have healthy Halbert not in a minute restriction they’ve had practice time

With both of their stars and they can grow going forward road trip coming up for the Pacers in New Orleans on Friday two games in Texas against the Mavs and I believe the Spurs coming up after that going two and one on that trip would be awesome for the Pacers whose schedule

Does get a little tricky for their next half dozen or so games picking up as many wins as they can would of course be crucial and we’ll of course cover it all here on the lockdown Pacers podcast tomorrow we’ll have a guest to talk some buyout Market talk some Pelicans talk

Some Pacers not sure who yet because I’m bad at planning guests this week have been really behind on work but don’t worry there will be somebody and of course Monday we’ll talk Pelicans game we’ll talk Spurs game we’ll look ahead to many other things coming the Pacers

Way in future games so much to talk about about this team with the stretch run coming thank you all so much for listening have a wonderful wonderful day and we will see you soon

  1. Does Siakam look more comfortable with the Pacers, or is there something more going on with his great play of late?

  2. Siakams midrange shot is immaculate. I'm surprised that Haliburton has been shooting so poorly lately😢.. Benny is getting no foul calls

  3. The point of attack defense is too bad to fix. Personnel is what it is – not gonna be fixed until the off season. BUT , BUT , BUT if they attack the glass they are hard to beat. If we can clearly win the rebound battle , I think we win most of the time.

  4. The Pacers are like Robin Hood – they steal wins from "better" teams and give wins to "worse" teams. Hopefully they can still steal a win from a fully rested Pelicans team in New Orleans.

  5. I've said it before, Pascal just needs a little time to adjust to the Pacers, but the real key is the Pacers, particularly the coaching staff, adjusting to Pascal, and potentially unlocking next level PSkills.
Haliburton is a great player, he's figuring it out,Mathurin is a great fit, he's starting to get that using that fit makes both of them, and the team better, and the other players are slowly catching up.
The hope is that the coaches can design some sets with options to unleash the potential… fingers crossed, lol.

  6. Keep grinding #Pascal #Siakam #WeTheNorth x #BoomBaby Good bounce back win for the team and a send-off for the road. It will help the confidence of the young players. It's good to see Hali x Siakam development chemistry and rhythm growing as a duo. Over the remaining season, I would like Pacers to tryout different ways of winning in preparation of playoffs: a fast pace, a slow pace, a gritty , offense through Hali, offense through Pascal with Hali playing off ball., half court offense.. #WeTheNorth x #BoomBaby

  7. I'm jumping with crazy happiness. Caitlin Clark coming to Indy is most exciting news since Siakam.
