Three over the four games including two blowout losses to begin and end the trip last night’s game felt like it was the Warriors game part two so I did find it somewhat ironic to see that the Bucks were blown out by 35 against Golden State to start the trip and then 35 by

The Kings to end it it just didn’t seem like it was the Bucks night early on Kings set the tone with some physicality in addition to being scorching hot from three so there’s no doubt about it that this was a shooting variance game but do you think that this bucks L was solely

Because of the shooting variant or was there more to it no um and what’s funny is we’ve we saw a lot of that on this road trip where the Bucks had done a pretty good job defending uh the perimeter I I mean I hesitate to say defending the threes

But they haven’t had those types of games by and large for this season and it wasn’t really shooting luck per se when you look some of the luck adjusted numbers they’ just been much better in that spot uh but on this road trip that that changed in what every game but the

Clippers game it seemed like the Lakers caught fire early D’Angelo Russell stayed on fire that Warriors game had a lot of similar tones to this game and then tonight was probably the most egregious example where the Kings just could not miss in that first quarter um especially but you know it’s it’s easy

To look at the box score and um look at those shooting discrepancies and and where the kings were again especially in the first half and where the Bucs finished this game I mean they they took basically the same volume of Threes for the game it was the exact same at

Halftime but you were minus 33 on points scored from threes so that does stand out um but to me there was a number of things in this game and and uh shouts to our listener Ron who who was messaging me during the game asking does this just

Kind of seem like uh those games against the Pacers where the Bucs are going to struggle against younger teams that are more athletic and are going to run up and down the floor and play at a high pace and I kind of dismissed it and was like well it’s just a couple minutes

Into the game let’s wait and see how this plays out but that’s exactly how it played out and we even heard Doc Rivers mention that and and added yeah he does have some level of concern for that in the postseason um you know he he did indicate there are ways that you can

Combat that and obviously he’s not going to give that away but to me that was it it was you know the Kings stayed hot throughout the game they play it at a much much quicker Tempo but I think the other things that to me were more frustrating for the bucks you can’t

Really control the pace that the kings are going to play at I mean sure you can make them Miss but you can be more physical you can be the bigger stronger more aggressive team and the Bucks were not the kings were beating up the Bucks in the post and especially the way that

They were playing around Giannis and Brook Lopez especially Giannis when they would catch in the paint um and then the other part is is what we’ve heard from Doc Rivers a couple of times and In fairness we heard Adrien Griffin mention it when he was here as well and that’s

The offense has to put the defense in a better spot doc mentioned chasing fool’s gold and was very very displeased with the way the offense played um and I I think that’s a big part of it when you look at Giannis was incredibly efficient nobody else was and I don’t think that

Offense I mean I I think maybe the most Mis misleading and melling number from that game is when you look at the Bucs assist rate and what 23 assists 30 field goals though for the game so they had a 76% assist rate but there was for all intents and purposes no real ball

Movement in the game right yeah absolutely and that let me start with something positive because you did mention Giannis and how he was able to to bring it I do want to just say Jan was the one positive I did take away from this game after he came back from

The Achilles tightness we’ve mentioned on this show as well it looked like he was playing under the rim uh during this road trip leading up to this and it was good to see him dunking again against the Kings got some really vicious posters and it was just good to see him

With that bounce you mentioned the fact that it was Giannis had a good game but the rest of the shooting around him wasn’t at half time Giannis was eight of 10 from the field 80% for 22 points the rest of the Bucks were 10 the 32 for 31%

34 points at that time and yeah it is true like you can’t look at the game and say like man like the Bucks you know they just couldn’t find good looks like they got a lot of good looks at threes and they did not fall for him it was

Unbelievable at times just watching the ball go in and rattle right back out the top when you’re just like okay this is not going to help also didn’t help that the Bucks lost the battle in the paint as well to your point about physicality you saw that early on where it felt like

They were just really setting a tone in this game and I knew the kings were going to come out with some energy because they had just lost to Houston in the game prior to this one so given how close things are in the standings in the

West I knew the kings were gonna come out try to play really hard put the Bucs in a disadvantage disadvantageous situation and they did that and the bugs didn’t seem to have any counters to it um Giannis had so many beautiful passes that just weren’t paid off at the end

The one that he had in the corner to Malik Beasley where he like fak the hand off kick the back out Giannis truly does lead the lead I think in like nine assists like just some beautiful passes the world will never uh really get a chance to see because it’s not going to

Be a highlight but it was rough and to your point I don’t think it was just shooting alone uh their offense did put them in a bad position defensively because of course it’s like yeah you see the rebounding and it’s like well I thought the Kings would have actually

Had even more rebounds in this game based on the way that the bucks were missing so frequently uh and when you’re missing you’re putting your defense in a bad situation because now the Kings aren’t you know getting the ball uh from taking it out and trying to set up their

Half court offense they’re getting the ball off the rim and they’re running so now you have to communicate you have to talk you have to get back into position and the bug struggled along the way trying to do that as well there was also a lot of attention given to Damen

Lillard so I do want to also give just a hat tip off to the Sacramento Kings and the defensive effort that they had because some games you’re like it’s just not our game but the Kings did a lot of things to make the Bucks uncomfortable throughout the game you mentioned as

Well some of the things that doc mentioned postgame and I want to dive into some of the things that doc mentioned postgame as well as Giannis and DNE because I thought their perspectives around this game were really interesting and also shed light on what we might have to start looking

App so after the Warriors game doc said it wasn’t just a game you flush right it’s teachable it’s wasn’t just the defense it’s the offense that sunk him and he echoed similar sentiments after this Kings game as well uh just gonna read Doc’s postgame quote as is because I found it really interesting

And I want to get your reaction to this Justin after the game doc said quote listen it’s going to say they shot 53% and listen Malik had some wide open shots so did Pat conon but that’s all Fool’s goal the ball didn’t move tonight we took difficult shots Sacramento overh

Helps a lot because they have to and we did not take advantage of it at all a few times we did we did get good shots but I thought the way we played offensively I thought we chased points all night everybody first play of the

Game I think a player pump fake got into the paint we told him they run at you and kick it out we take contested to so we deserved it tonight my fault I didn’t get them prepared the way they should mentally I thought our shoot around guys

Talking about planes and leaving as a staff we talked about it after shoot around and it was like if our focus is not better than this morning it’s going to be a long day and it was a long day so that’s on us end quote Justin when

You heard doc mention these things which again Echo what we heard after the Warriors game but this additional PC out in there about hearing guys talking about ready to get on the plane and the focus not being there what do you take away from some of these comments as well

Well it it lines up with what we saw I mean that it very much looked like a team that was on the last leg of a road trip where you were in California for eight days and just anxious to get back home but you know that being said you

Have to see a different variation of the Bucks starting on Thursday the good part is you do have five of your next six games at home and you got a lot of off days in between those games as we touched on you got three separate instances coming up of of two days off

Between games and that’s always a concern for any coach in any team when you’re on I mean I know the Bucks have had longer road trips this season but when you’re on lengthy road trips how do we respond in that final game it’s it’s the same as as the Bucks to a lesser

Extent are going to face on Thursday that you always have that in the back of your mind when you’re just starting a home stand of okay we’re back at home have we let our guard down um but I thought that was pretty apparent when you were watching the game of you know

They made one charge in the third quarter um and that to me was the big difference between this game and the Warriors game which were bookends of nearly you know the identical game the way that the Warriors shot from start to finish you lose by 35 the score was

Almost identical in both of those games but in that Warriors game you mentioned doc saying there were some teaching moments and this wasn’t a burn the tape game um there was more in that Warriors game than there was here at least in terms of the positives because I think

It was easy to point to that five and a half minute stretch to start the second half and say look all these things this is what we need to do look at what happened it went from 20 to six when we were doing these things everything else the lead ballooned and we eventually

Lost by 35 in this game came similar story it wasn’t quite as noticeable but you did go on a run in the third quarter um but what 14 I think was the lowest that they got it down to and there’s that sequence too where AJ Green had a

Tough look but that that corner three attempt that if that would have dropped it would have either made it 11 or 13 and if that happens then you think okay now this is interesting but it didn’t and the Kings just kept their foot on the gas so you know to hear Doc Rivers

Say that I wasn’t surprised and also as as we’ve talked about Camille you know that’s in many ways the breath of fresh air just the cander of Doc Rivers that you hear and not necessarily coach speak of well I mean it’s it’s one out of 82

And we’ll get them next time and I was proud of the way the guys fought back and and things of that nature we do hear some of that but I I think it carries more value when you hear that because of the quotes that you just read and and

You hear what Doc Rivers really feels um and I think a couple other things to tie into that a little bit later in his press conference when he was talking about what we’ll get to with uh trapping Damen Lillard and you know the spacing and saying again that stuff that we worked

On if they’re going to pressure him we have to space the floor we have to be able to pick it apart if they’re going to trap him somebody’s open and that’s probably going to be Giannis in the lane so it was just a bad job by our guys to

Not figure out spacing and not have those ball movements that we saw really for most of this road trip safe for that Warriors game um so that that was the big takeaway is you know I appreciate Doc rff’s cander and the honesty and and really letting you know how he feels but

I think the other part too is and again this another thing that to me carries more value because we’ve heard it through good and bad was the last thing or or one of the other things that he touched on in the press conference was you know where the Bucks are and their

Progress and said I still feel like we’re headed in the right spot I told you guys during the win streak don’t judge us judge us by our win streak I said then even though we’re winning it’s great but we’re still not ready yet but

We will be and I still feel that way so to hear that through wins and to hear it through losses it’s it’s similar to what we just went through it’s been a consistent message about it’s going to take some time the Bucks are working through a process and there are things

They need to learn in order to be the team that we all think that they can be like you can see the potent you can see how this is a championship team it’s just like at this point they’re still trying to figure out things and how to

Win the game in the way that’s best for this particular roster and throughout this game like it’s kind of like they reverted back at times where it’s like okay I’m going to win the game and I love giannis’s comments when he came out and saying like I get why it’s happening

When it’s about the lack of ball movement because like you’re getting double teamed every time and you want to play you want to try to impact the game so sometimes you’re probably just going to try maybe to he didn’t say this exactly but you’re try to force the

Action a bit because you want to try to impact the game somehow some way but the reality of it is you got to figure out how you’re going to beat the double team and how you’re going to make an impact even if it’s not you putting the ball in

The hoop how are you going to be able to put your teammates in the best position to succeed and we saw that at times throughout this game with the Bucks being able to create open looks for other guys it’s just that they weren’t able to knock them down in this

Particular game which when when you’re not shooting well it’s going to be hard to win a game that’s just simple basketball when Malik Beasley is your leading you know three-point scorer of the night and he’s three of 11 from the field it’s it’s going to be kind of

Tough to make hay with that but the bugs have to continue to find ways and in particular I think uh find those actions that can help get Dame involved when he is being blitzed when he is being trapped figure out different actions to run off of that because we’ve heard them

Talk about Giannis and uh Dame developing their chemistry and in practice how they’re running the same actions over and over and over and over to your point that you mentioned doc saying we practice what are we going to do with the blitz run it over and over

And over and over and it seems at this point that they still need more reps to figure that out because for large stretches of the game that King’s defense did a really good job of taking Dame out of the play yeah um and you know as doc said

We’ve practiced that um when asked too about you know the larger discussion we’re we’re getting into here is how do you prevent this from happening um you know as doc said look it’s pressure it was pressure um that’s what teams are going to do against Damen Lillard it was

Just pressure they got into him a lot they pressured him every team tries to do it but they were successful tonight and you know the two things that we heard come up the most in regards to that was their ball movement and how he felt it wasn’t there and again that’s

The ultimate outlier is 23 assists done 30 field goals when there was a game where you just didn’t feel like the ball moved it’s stuck quite a bit and there were bad shots um but ball movement is key finding the open guy because again if they’re trapping and they’re bringing

Two players out High you have an advantage close to the basket so you got to get the ball down there but the other thing and we’ve heard this creep up more and more is um post play and yeah you know that is one way to slow down the

Game a bit right you’re not getting into chasing bad shots and chasing threes and those long misses leading to transition opportunities to use your size more and that was one of the more jarring things that I mentioned too is the kings were the Far More Physical team they were

Beating up the Bucks I don’t mean that in a bad way they were just playing aggressive and physical in the post and you could see it was really getting to Brook Lopez especially and Giannis at times and I think at times when that does happen doc has kind of danced

Around this you have a tendency to move further back from the basket and and this is one of the things we’ve heard doc mention a couple of times now of you know we have to do a good job of utilizing Brook Lopez we got to do a

Better job of doing that we have to throw him the ball more we being the coaching staff we got to figure out ways to get him the ball there but also Brooke has to get down there and has to call for the ball and be more vocal for

It um so it’s you know it’s it’s a partnership there but I think that was a big part of it where you weren’t used in your size and it’s a Kings team that if if you hadn’t watched the league so far this season and I told you you know the

Kings are not a great defensive team and they usually give up a lot of points you would be shocked with the way that defense looked last night and how physical and aggressive they were uh but the other part of it too was and look I

I don’t think this is the reason why the Bucks lost the game but they’ve had these interesting games pop up where you’re you’re missing a star player in this case an important player for the opponent that you’re going against and tonight or last night it was Keegan

Murray um and I think when Bucks fans saw oh Keegan Murray is out he’s a late scratch for this game you thought okay there’s one less score and that should be advantageous for our defense but I do think it changed how we saw the Kings trapping Damen Lillard and how

Aggressive that they were on him because if Keegan Murray plays and he’s starting uh Keegan Murray is not defending Damen Lillard you see either Daren fox or maybe Kevin herder on him but instead they were able to go to Keon Ellis who’s out there for his defense and that

Allowed them to be far more aggressive on Damen Lillard and that was one of those things have seemed like it was going to help the bucks but in actuality it was probably the worst case thing for the bucks yeah absolutely that’s a great Point Ellis had a great game take

Nothing away from him and the defense that he played when he got into foul trouble I think it was in the third quarter when he was up to four I was like oo that’s good for the bucks but it didn’t have any real payoff for the team unfortunately with the score just

Just talking about in regards to trying to figure out how to beat what we’re going to see jannis mentioned the fact that they’re going to have to work at that blitzing that double teaming that they’re seeing uh from opposing defenses uh he said quote we’re going to see the

King’s defense was able to swarm him so quickly like the king’s defense looked really connected tonight to your point they’re not known for their defense normally but in this game they really had some juice and it really did affect the buck so with them understanding that

This is how teams are going to play them that’s something I want to see as we have this Philly game coming up next going into the next week of games that they have because again we know what’s uh at risk for the bugs here they’re currently number two in the standings

The cavali play tonight on Wednesday uh so like the standings are going to be bouncing around the buck scene every win that they can have so as they prepare for Philly coming up they have to be ready because now teams are also seeing more tape with this Doc Rivers version

Of this team and how the Bucks are looking to play so they’re going to understand hey this is the best way to come and attack this bucks offense once someone sees something done it’s a copycat League we saw it with the wall when Toronto pulled that out in 2019 in

The playoffs and teams started to follow suit teams are going to be saying how you Blitz this team and if it’s a night where guys aren’t making shots then you’re going to have a good chance at beating the buck so the bugs have to figure out those ways to counter that as

Well as understand that teams are going to be looking to do this to them and they have to stay connected stay together um and not lose sight of that and try to individually win the game which I think is another big part of this where it’s like okay I’m going to

Revert back to when the offense was a little bit more random a little bit less structured and I’m going to go and try to get a bucket so the Bucks can’t do that and they have a Philly team coming up on Thursday here at home where again

No Joel and beat but Philly is a team that can still give you a run for your money even without him in the in the lineup yeah Tyrese Maxi came back uh Tuesday night from the concussion so you you’d imagine he is going to play um and

That’s the same Squad that you saw in Philadelphia what a week ago where this team was much more focused and connected on all those things things that that we discussed you the other big piece from Tuesday night was I mentioned Tyrese Maxi came back uh ogan anobi came back

In the same game for the Knicks and they throttled the 76ers so the Knicks are now 13-2 in games where ogn anobi has played for them they have the best defense and I think eighth or ninth best offense they’ve been a much different team with

OG and and Obi on the floor and you know I I had mentioned um I think it was on our our previous show like I’m not ready to call it yet but if you can beat the Kings and if the Knicks lose and we’re talking about a

Five game separation in the Lost column where you already own the tiebreaker I think I’d be ready to call it that the Bucks have walled off the Knicks the opposite happens so it’s it’s still three games and you do still hold the tiebreaker but it makes that final game

You have against the Knicks on April 7th very very big especially given those numbers that I mentioned and how the Knicks have played with ogan anobi on the floor this season I still think the uh the Bucks are going to finish I think they’re going to finish third but I I

Still think they’re going to finish in the top three in the Eastern Conference even for the Knicks to catch you it’s going to take a lot given that you have that tiebreaker um but it’s it’s those margins and it’s what last night means like it’s not just losing the game it’s

How you look now if if you want to be optimistic and positive from this as we just went through it’s better for this stuff to happen now and it’s better to experience it honestly when you get more reps of okay here we see another team do this and here’s how they Blitz Damen

Lillard here’s how they defended and tried to trap so how are we going to work around this and and Doc Rivers has pointed that out a number of times already this season is is learning from these things but it’s it’s gonna fall on using their size and and getting the

Ball into Brook Lopez figuring out to get Giannis in those spots just as we were starting to see on this road trip because when you look at the schedule that’s in front of the Bucks here you’re gonna face a lot of teams not only playoff teams but you’re gonna face a

Lot of those defenses that you would assume are going to do the same things that we just saw from the Sacramento Kings obviously a lot of teams are going to try to implement that all teams are going to say let’s try to get the ball out of Damen Lillard’s hands but

Especially when you look at the size you’re going to face a lot of these similar teams you think about the Oklahoma City Thunder they’re going to do the exact same thing that is the smallest team in the league Lakers same thing that they’re going to do the

Celtics you would imagine are going to do the same thing to you so you’re going to get more of these reps going into the playoffs but it it’s going to fall down to number one we got to be the bigger more aggressive more physical team we

Have to use our size more and the other big part we didn’t bring up his name just yet but the the elephant in the room is look I’m not saying you win the game in Sacramento if Chris Middleton plays but the ball s sticking and ball movement and some of those shots and

Some of the looks that you’re going to get because the Kings will trap Daman Lillard and say we don’t care if this player shoots it it’s more difficult to do that when Chris Middleton and Damen Lillard and Giannis are all on the floor with Malik Beasley Andor Brook Lopez so

I know we keep saying this and beating you over the head with it but you just got to get Chris Middleton back on the floor I’m not discouraged by him going from questionable to out uh on that game against the Kings I think we talked about this on the previous show as well

I didn’t think he was going to play in Sacramento it just didn’t make a whole lot of sense to to come back for the final game of a road trip even if he already is on the trip but it just seemed like look if he’s very close

Let’s see where he is Thursday when we play at home against the 76ers and then the bonus is after that game we got two days off for him to rest we play in the afternoon on Sunday then we have two days off for him to rest again then you

Have a backtack Chris I I don’t think this is any breaking news Chris isn’t going to play in both sets of a back toback for the remainder of the Season here and I think you only have three of those the first starts next week but the

Way that you could handle this with five of your next six games at home if Chris Middleton is ready to go and able to play on Thursday you’ll get back home what last night early this morning you’re back in Milwaukee so the 13th of March you could just say look he’s not

Playing in both sets of a back toback so we’re not going to send him on the road to Boston he’ll play night two at home against the Brooklyn Nets and then he would essentially not have to leave Milwaukee for two weeks where you could get the rest and get treatment as well

For the first time in over eight years, the Sacramento Kings defeated the Milwaukee Bucks with a 129-94 win. Sacramento had not defeated Milwaukee since Feb. 1, 2016, with the 15-game losing streak being the longest active streak for any team.
