The first thing we’re going to start off with is are the Detroit Pistons as a team not a singular player not a cade not a Duran a ivy not not anyone singular as a team are they finally turning the corner and look I understand for a team that has

Won for for a team for a team is that that’s battling to not be the worst team in the in the NBA for a team that is battling um or at one point was trying to not break the record for the most losses in a row um understanding all of

That it is possible that Detroit Pistons are turning a corner right now Omari s ker of the Detroit Free Press wrote an article about how the Detroit Pistons for more than a month now have had a 31- win pace and were 15th in defensive rating over that span over the last 16 games

They’re six and 10 and something he mentions in his article is that and it’s same thing I feel six and 10 is not good but if the Pistons played at six and 10 Pace every 16 games everyone would be okay everyone would be fine every no one would be panicking everyone would

Probably be extremely extremely happy with this season that’s not good they wouldn’t be I don’t even know if they’d make the play in I didn’t do the math but I don’t know they maybe would be a play in team but if they played at that pace All Year everyone would have been just

Okay but I want to zoom in even further over the last five games the Detroit Pistons r rank 13th in net rating they rank 11th in defensive rating and they’re 20th in offensive rating we’ll talk about uh the offensive rating defensive rating what goes into each and

What I think is causing the defense to be so good and why the offense still seems to be lagging behind a little bit even though that’s better than what it was before the year so either way both those they’re better on both ends one end they’re borderline top 10 the other

One they’re still bottom but they’re better than what they were before so I want to start off with the defense the defense was so very clearly going to get better like it it was I think as soon as the Pistons made that trade anyone who has been watching the team all year for

The sio I saw some Pistons fans um referencing other Pistons fans as sickos for watching every single game despite how the season has went and you know what we are sickos we’re we’re basketball junkies okay everyone here who is watching this team every single day every single game it’s because you

Love basketball and you know maybe we are sickos but as soon as they made those trades for f or Quin Grimes getting and not even just adding those guys but offloading the guys they got rid of in a boyon banovich and an Alec Burks and a mon Morris like

Getting rid of those players even an Isaiah livers even a Marvin Bagley heck even a klian Hayes who I thought was fine defensively but just getting rid of those players that that was that was probably the biggest deal about it because bullan something we talked about on this

Podcast for the last year and a half the Detroit Pistons probably had the worst Wing defensive rotation in the entire NBA for the better part of the last year and a half two years with sadik before he was moved then with boan with Burks like their wing rotation defensively was

Atrocious now they bring in Simone fonio now they bring in aqu Quinn Grimes now they give more minutes to assar Thompson I think just that just just doing that was already going to make their defense so much better because Wing defense is so important in the NBA I don’t think

Anyone besides assar is like some out-of-the Park defensive player I don’t think any like fonio or Grimes is like some all defensive member but those guys are active defensively I think they’re good Defenders I think Grimes is a little bit better maybe not against bigger Wings he’s a little smaller but I

Think Grimes is probably an overall better Defender for his position than fanto but I think fonio has been fine defensively too those guys are long they’re athletic they’re active they know where to be they’re giving it they’re all the defensive end of the floor and Grimes at times really gets up

Into into some ball handlers so I mean if you want to look at there’s a number that I was looking at earlier while I was at work when it was it was boring so I was just going through some random piston numbers the Pistons offensive rating in the minutes Grimes have been

On the floor so far is terrible like when he’s on the floor versus when he’s off the floor they’re like 18 points better when he’s off the floor but yet he’s at like around a minus 1.2 net rating because the defense is equally 18 points better or 19 points better when

He’s on the floor so that that points out right there how much he helped the defense now if he could just hit some threes he really would be impactful but he’s just in the middle of a really bad cold streak either way my point is is adding those type of players was going

To help the defense and then giving assar Thompson more mans was going to help the defense and also Stu coming back from injury even though he was on the team throughout the year and the defense was still not very good him coming back at the same time as all this

Happening was going to add some juice as well I also think Kade is giving more effort defensively now that that I I want to say he’s he he’s not being asked to do as much but at the same time I think he is being asked to do a lot

Honestly I think he’s just giving more of an effort on that end now I I think now that the team is more competitive and they’re they’re in more games he’s he he’s locking in a little bit more defensively that’s helped a ton I still think Jaylen durren is is has been

Struggling pretty badly defensively still but you can like even with durren struggling how he is defensively when you have wings in front of him that aren’t just like traffic Combs like it doesn’t expose how badly he’s been defensively as much and you can get away with it especially when he’s off the

Floor especially when you have minutes at St at the five and and playing Stu with durren at the at the five which is an argument that St Defenders have made him playing next to durren at the five uh really helps during defensively um so defensively I think everyone could

Have saw that coming and it in the logic matches the results they’ve been pretty good defensively over the last five games and I don’t expect that to really take a step back unless they’re offense really craters and hurts their defense which now let’s go over to the offensive

End why is their offense still trailing uh much behind than the defense now again I do want to point out that the offense is still better than what it was before so it’s a little bit of an improvement still there’s obviously not where you probably would like it yet um

Why is it 20th in the league instead of around average around the NBA there’s a few reasons why first off when kade’s on the floor the offense is absurd and when he’s off the floor it’s Terri it’s like I think it’s about negative 17.1 Point differential when it comes to his

Offense on and off offensive rating it’s terrible so the main reason is that they’re not winning the minutes when Kate’s off the floor when he goes to the bench they’re getting destroyed in his minutes and the backup guard rotation is becoming a problem the backup maybe not the backup guard rotation the backup

Point guard position is becoming a problem because they don’t have a point guard to just set the table to calm things down and create for others Sasser is is a peer scorer like that guy you’re not asking him to initiate an offense it’s just doesn’t work when he’s asked

To do that which is part of the reason I know he had some bright spots in this last game part of the reason why he’s been struggling I think as of late is because he’s being asked to be a point guard and then also Jane Ivy not only I think is struggling

Shooting I think he’s also struggling to to serve that backup point guard role I I don’t think he’s been as good like everyone wants them to be staggered him and Kate I I and look I still want them to be staggered I’m not saying go away

From it at all like I still would like them on the floor at all times of the game Ivy just hasn’t been as good in that spot as everyone may be anticipated him to be and that has to do with the fact he’s struggling shooting wise but I also think he’s struggling

Decision-making wise I think he’s also struggling last year at the end of the year he was really doing a good job at controlling his speeds and changing Pace I don’t think he’s doing a good job of that right now I think he’s just overall struggling right now over the last month

Or so I think Ivy’s just been really struggling and I think that’s really hurting the the offense in that in that point I think he’s had like a few games where he’s went off like I think like three games ago he like four threes like

That he but overall he just has not been Jane the Jane Ivy that everyone wants him to be the last month and that’s I think that’s hurting the offense um the other thing that I think is impacting the offense is how do I I mean it’s kind of I mean

It’s basically the same thing as why I said at first but I guess I take this into a coaching Direction their insistence on playing Five bench lineups like that that right there when they do do that now they haven’t done it as much lately but during that stretch I talked

About they have done it and those mens have absolutely killed so when their starters are together and Cade’s on the floor the offense is fine the offense is fine and the team when Kate’s on the floor over the last five games they’re out scoring teams what is it I just lost

It um when he’s on the floor they’re out scoring teams by 8.8 points his onof right now with the last five games is 23.4 points that is an insane on off the pistes are three and two in that span he’s carrying a lot of the stuff going

On offensively and overall with the team he’s playing exceptionally well so really I guess the if you want the offense to be better I guess there’s two solutions uh one just play Kade Cunningham more keep him off the bench um and second you really need Jane Ivy

To turn it around like you really need Jane Ivy to turn around and it probably would help a lot if Quinn Grimes could start hitting some threes that would really help too like those two things I think would really help the team more more likely Ivy that like that would

Have a bigger impact but also Grimes if Grimes could hit some threes I’m not going to lie to you I think you’d see Grimes close a lot of these games like I he Clos the game against the Knicks as soon as he started hitting threes he closed against the Knicks like because

That’s how impactful he was on both ends of the floor with how he plays so all it takes for him to hit a few threes I think you might see him close a few games but both those guys if those guys can play better I think that will help

The overall offense but to answer the question are the pisses tur in the corner I think so I think they are they’re try now look I know the quality of opponent has not been great but earlier in the year the same quality of opponent they were still losing they

Were getting blitzed by the same quality of opponents okay so getting these wins like I said a few weeks ago they need to get these C uh uhh winnable games they’ve been getting the winnable games and they’ve been competitive in other ones so now they got a few rough games

Coming up against the Heat against the Celtics let’s see what they can do can they steal a game that would be big time that would really show something can they remain competitive in these games I I think they can I I think this roster makes more sense remember I said this

After the trade deadline the roster makes more sense with the wings they have the ability to play lineups that make sense it falls on Monty Williams and over the last five games Monty’s doing a fine job I think I I don’t think he’s doing a fantastic job but he’s

Doing a better job over the last five games I I think they they’re they’re turning somewhat of a corner may not be like a corner going into superstardom or or you know playoff team but I don’t think they’re playing like they’re obviously not playing like the worst team in the league anymore they’re

Turning a corner guys are playing better the team’s playing better and it’s a I want to say you know what I don’t think this is too crazy to say it’s a good time to be a Pistons fan right now for you guys it’s it’s a good time because

Was it let me let me make sure I remember correctly um he tried playing through the game against Dallas but he very clearly was not okay he wasn’t feeling good it looked like it one point he was about to throw up um he was not looking very good so he basically missed

The entire game of the Dallas game he only played the first 11 minutes then didn’t play again after that um so he’s been struggling with the illness he missed the game against Charlotte he missed the game against Toronto I it sounds like he’s going to miss the next

Game against the Heat as well I don’t know how long he’ll be out but it sounds like he’s not going to be playing against Miami either um so over the last few games and maybe however long he’s out next few games into the future the Pistons have been running a staring

Lineup of K Cunningham Jaye Ivy Simone fonio Isaiah Stewart and Jaylen durren and look this is an incredibly small sample size okay it’s it’s like literally only two games only two games worth two three games really three games worth in in those 54 minutes they play

Together that lineup has a net rating of plus 21.96 now what do I take from those numbers well first thing obviously like I said it’s incredibly small sample size so you don’t want to read into it too crazy with that said remember we’re going to go through the same test I take

You guys through with everything when it comes to lineup data the first question you ask the first question I think you have to ask every single time when you look at these kind of lineup days especially some with some smaller sample sizes is one does it match the logic

Test does it pass the the the process test does it make sense theoretically and does this lineup make sense theoretically yes K CM J Ivy Simone fantu isaah Stewart can all hypothetically shoot threes now Stu I actually I don’t think hypothetically you can say it steu is hitting threes

Now whether he commands the defense of respect yet no he doesn’t but he’s hitting open threes like that that’s not a question like he’s actually hitting threes so all four of those guys are capable of hitting threes I mean over the last month maybe not Ivy but still

Like you anticipate that he’s someone that will be hitting some threes right so theoretically yes it makes sense you got enough spacing enough offensive ability while also not completely forfeiting defensively because kade’s been more locked in Simone feko a good Wing Defender Isaiah Stewart’s a good Defender so you got three capable

Defenders in there and Ivy’s been giving more effort I don’t think he’s a good Defender but he’s giving more effort which is good um so you you got probably the best balance of offense and defense so does it pass the process test does it pass the logic test yes does it pass the

Results test obviously yes and what does it me what what’s the biggest takeaway here is it this fiveman unit I would say no the biggest takeaway is is what we’ve been talking about by the way Isaiah Stewart’s at 38% from three this season we’re going have to

Talk about Isaiah Stewart um in a future episode soon I I tweeted this out a few days ago um at the end of the season I’m going to do a a podcast talking about everything I got right and everything I was wrong about and I think I’m

Definitely going to have a lot more things I was wrong about there’s a few things I was right about still but um definitely I was wrong about a few things and I’m going to do an episode about that I think Isaiah Stewart probably was one of those things I was

Wrong about at the beginning the year um but either way my point is what I’m trying to say going back to my original Point um is the biggest takeaway that fiveman unit no because if you remember the unit with assar Thompson in place of uh Isaiah Stewart also was playing

Extremely well together that lineup worked really well and excuse me uh I went to try to get this lineup data and I accidentally clicked uh Jared rhoden’s name as I was like well what’s going on why is there no minutes of this lineup um but anyways that lineup of of assar Duren Simone

Fonio K Cunningham and uh Jane Ivy also work playing extremely well together and what’s the difference what well actually let’s not say What’s the difference what’s the similarities here they both just pass the logic test you have enough spacing you have defense as well you’re not going all in on defense you’re not

Going all in on offense you got a balance of both things their minutes they played 113 minutes together they were plus 3.9 so both lineups worked the main takeaway is just don’t play you playing assar Stu and Duran together is a death trap like that that right there again that that is

What it makes sense logic wise that hey that probably isn’t GNA be enough spacing that’s probably going to hurt the offense which will then in turn hurt the defense like it makes sense like that we’ve seen it do the exact thing play out we’ve watched it play out on

The on on the screen at the games that that three-man lineup minus 9.02 they have an offensive rating of 107.0 one obviously Way by by far in a by far in away the worst offense in the league with that three-man lineup if you add Kay Cunningham and you add Jay and Ivy

Which is what the starting lineup was they were trying to put together before assar Townson got uh got hurt or not hurt he got sick um they were that lineup of assar Duren Stu Kade and Ivy they were a minus 9.12 net rating so they’re St were losing their minutes

They were not winning their minutes which was contributing to a lot of the losses still after the trade deadline now all of a sudden you shake it up you start playing Simone a lot more with them remember uh Monty Williams started talking about I I get Simone fono in in

There earlier probably for Isaiah Stewart it’s it’s the that that’s what’s causing it that right there is the biggest takeaway the fact that they are not forcing the trio of Stu assar and durran to play together is leading to the Pistons playing really good basketball that’s what’s leading to it

And that’s why Cade’s minutes he’s been dominating his minutes because he’s not playing with that Trio all the time so again at first I was strongly and honestly I probably am still strongly in the camp of you have to start assar he is a higher priority when he started

He’s played much better than when he’s come off the bench you need him in that starting line for his defense and again he’s just a higher priority he is one of the core Four Guys heck some people might be saying he’s the top two guys now I’m not just talking about fans

When I say that so if that’s the case you need to be prioritizing him so I would start assar and bench stew but at this point again if you want to bench assar and then to start stew then so be it because at the end of the day one the

Top priority is K Cunningham out of all the players and two the second priority is winning games the team the team itself and the team itself plays better without all three of them on the floor together so while I believe you should be starting ofar for the reasons I

Listed if AAR comes back and you decide to bring him off the bench and keep doing the star in lineup I would disagree with those that decision but the the overall decision I would say I’d be okay with like if choosing Stu over assar that’s why I would disagree with

Choosing to bench one of them I would not disagree with that like I at the end of the day I’d be like okay whatever it is what it is at this you’re gonna have a better branded basketball on the floor so I think that it’s a high possibility

They keep the star in lineup when thear comes back but again I think they should when comes back healthy I think Stu should go to the bench and assar should start um but honestly I now that I’m even thinking about it harder I I don’t see that happening either because James

Wisman over the last three games has been playing pretty well and the whole logic behind putting St to the bench would be to play him at the back of five so you don’t have to play Wiseman they probably want to play Wiseman now so yeah they’re probably not going to do

That so I guess yeah the probably gonna keep the star in lineup I just the one concern with it is are they going to utilize assar still that that’s the concern to me because when he was starting the last few games before he got hurt he was playing a lot of minutes

AAR Thompson that is he was playing heavy minutes and I’m worried that if he goes back to the bench you’ll start to see him go back to like under 20 minutes played again like before his sickness these were his minutes played 35 minutes 34 minutes 36 minutes 33 minutes 35

Minutes 43 minutes like that that’s how much he was playing as of late so that’s that’s just a concern for me but like I said at the end of the day it would still be a success uccessful like process to do to not play all three of them together and keep

Simone in the starting lineup so let me know what you guys think should they keep this starting lineup should they swap Stu and assar when assar comes back or are you in the minority and disagree with me and you just want to start assar Stu and Duran together still and bench

Week I believe um I didn’t watch the game yesterday I had to rewatch it at work I I missed everything yesterday had some stuff going on so I just wasn’t available all yesterday um so I don’t know if it was posted yesterday I honestly forgot when it was posted

Either way it was posted sometime this week um I got on Twitter today and I saw that K Cunningham is ranked 57th and I saw some of the names ranked above them and I’m sitting there like that doesn’t make much sense so I decided to read it I wanted to see what

They said about Kade what what was the reasoning for where he was placed and this sentence right here is what really got me to want to talk about this in the description if you click on Kate’s name they’ll give you like a brief I think it’s like a two paragraph

Description of why they have him where he’s at Etc and one of the sentences say quote Cunningham’s subpar three-point shooting and lack of explosion off the bounce or at The Rim isn’t helping either end quote when I saw that tweet or not tweet when I saw that sentence I almost almost

Lost it like I wanted to lose my mind first of all just I want to touch on the explosion off the bounce and at The Rim um there’s been quite a few plays over the last like week two weeks where CAD just destroyed somebody off the bounds first

I I haven’t noticed the issue with his explosion all all year to be honest he doesn’t have a problem being by the first Defender majority of the year the issue has been once he gets by the first Defender there’s someone at the nail aggressively helping and he can’t get

All the way there because they’re aggressively helping or when he gets by his guy he gets to the paint there’s two Defenders waiting for him at the paint he has to convert a strong or a tough finish that’s why bball index they tweet out a bunch of stats that’s why

Routinely bball index tweets out that he’s one of the better finishers when you take into account the quality of finishes he’s having to attempt like if you if he was getting open or or obviously no one’s just taking wide open layups but like if the quality of the

Layups he was taking at The Rim was improved his percentage around the rim would be much better now does some of that have to do with his own finishing yeah he can get better finishing but does the majority of that have to do with the spacing he’s been dealing with

All year yes that that like that plays a part so but overall I don’t really agree with the lack of explosion off the bounce like is he John Morant no but is he slow as dirt no he’s not like this idea that K doesn’t beat people off the

Bounce is crazy I don’t understand that he can beat his own guy off the bounce routinely this is a matter of is there enough spacing for him to get all the way to the rim and is he actually going to get a file call that’s another thing

He doesn’t get file calls doesn’t have the greatest whistle so a lot of those should be file calls are misses but nonetheless you want to criticize his his his finishing around the rim that would be the context I’d give to it so I I it’s it’s true that his numbers aren’t

Great around the rim but I think if you dive deeper into some you know deeper into the numbers it’s not as bad as as just looking at you know basketball reference which suggests you that’s the first thing the second thing the real thing I probably should start with this

Because this is the real thing that really made me Furious subpar three-point shooting I are they watching are they watching Cade are they was that sentence meant for the right that was that sentence meant for the right player doesn’t seem like it doesn’t seem like it for me because in the same

Article in the same ringer article they talked about Scotty Barnes and they mentioned his his three-point shooting and it rising and they like that they mentioned that for k for Scotty Barnes by the way Scotty Barnes is shooting 34% on the year from deep and and this is not to go at Scotty

Barnes at all this is not me trying to go after Scotty Barnes It’s just to point out to you Scotty Barnes in this in this piece was was being talked about for improving his three-point shot and and turning himself this is the exact sentence right here and the fact

That Barnes has turned himself into a reliable three-point shooter makes that style of play all the more plausible Scotty Barnes again is shooting 34% on the season K Cunningham on the season including the first 12 games where he shot poorly playing next to K Cunningham is shooting 36.1% from

Three I don’t I don’t I don’t get it I I don’t really see that one he’s shooting on 5.5 attempt Scotty’s doing on 4.9 and again this isn’t I’m not trying to go at Scotty this is going at the reasoning of the the the ringer piece how is Scotty an improving

Three-point shooter and CAD subpar three-pointer he’s shooting 36% from the field from from deep but then but then even if you go like I said if you go even deeper into the number since Game 12 the last 43 games of Kate season he’s shooting 38.2% from Deep on a lot more
