Chauncey Billups Postgame Interview | Portland Trail Blazers 93, New York Knicks 105

So it seemed like that second quarter kind of set you guys back you were playing catch up the entire night from there yeah yeah um you know I thought we did a good job uh in the first quarter just you know matching their physicality and knowing how they were going to play

Uh I thought we just had a good quarter you know um and then sh we had a we had just had a tough second quarter couldn’t make a shot turnovers really hurt us I think they had 17 out of their 55 points at the half turnovers it’s tough to absorb that you

Know when it’s when obviously we going to have a little bit of a tough night scoring uh based on who we don’t have playing so that hurt us but I thought we came out in that third quarter um and you know we didn’t win the quarter but I

Thought it was good enough you know but you got to have a big quarter to get back in it you know just didn’t really have enough man is scoot still on a minutes restrictions that why you took him out at the end I’ve asked you this a couple times johy

The with this team being so short-handed now is that an opportunity for the style the imprint of the team to kind of show through even though you don’t have guys like you stylistically even though you don’t have your primary initiators but you’ve got a style that you want to play

Do you think that you can use these opportunities to show that it doesn’t matter who’s out there to kind of have it build up a little bit what we try to do um is just that like it doesn’t really matter it’s not like when three or four guys aren’t playing we run

Totally different plays um we still want to play the same way um and I think for the most part we we end up doing that you know um and then sometimes you got so much youth on the floor that you can’t get to the sets you know um teams

Step up the pressure and you know they the timing of the play is off um we turn it over or we shortcut the play and shoot a tough shot or uh inexperience just Peaks it just Peaks his head up um and you can’t really get to much you know um and even

That those those are those are opportunities to teach you know um to teach our guys um and make them understand where the game kind of went left and why you know um because sometimes they just really they just understand like dang we had a tough second quarter um but they don’t

Understand why though you know they don’t understand that it was some of those turnovers are bad decisions or Rim decisions or some of the shots we took were actually turnovers you know because we didn’t have a chance at it so just it’s great teaching opportunities but we

Try to play the same way regardless of who’s out there um but you know obviously it’s going to look a little different when you got shooting around when you can drive and kick and that’s a shot maker there or you know it’s going to look a little

Different when you have ant or mal or more veteran initiators you can let them kind of Freewheel a little bit off of that stuff what specifically do you have to do when they’re not getting into sets or something breaks down like what what are the things that you find yourself kind

Of having to not over manage but maybe take the range back a little bit yeah yeah what I usually have to do is call the sets and I usually have to call the plays um but I I don’t like doing that as much because you might have scoot or

Atlanta whoever like kind of on the Move in like a you know secondary break action I see that there’s no Advantage but now I got to slow him down and call a play just so we can actually kind of get organized before it gets out of

Control so just things like that um that sometimes I will slow him down and sometimes I just want to see what’s going to happen you know cuz at some point they got to figure it out as well um but that that’s the main thing that I

Have to kind of take over is just some of the play call and then and some of of our secondary break action what do you like about the way Justin played tonight seemed like to be like he was May the most impactful in all season tonight

Yeah yeah I I just thought everything he you know he he fought defensively he denied the ball he got deflections he got rebounds that’s kind of the adjusting that you know we fell in love with last year when we got him he just does he’s

All over the place um and he made an impact in this game uh today and I was you know I was I was happy to have him out there you know I wish uh I wish there this is would be so many great opportunities for RS you know um

Yesterday and the day if he wasn’t you know a little banged up but you know good Justice Justin I’m sorry Justin played well you think ry’s going to be good this trip um I don’t know maybe at some point on the trip but I know that you know he

Needed he needed a few days he’s such a hard worker man he just he he’s he needed a few days what you think about the way tamani embraced the challenge of Defending Brunson o you know seemed to get into it a little bit with you know Brunson

Tonight which was nice yeah yeah uh I wasn’t surprised at all that’s that’s that’s you know that’s two monies that’s that’s two superpower you know you know um his his physicality defensively uh his length um guarding the basketball U that’s kind of his thing that’s his that’s where he helps

Us at the most to be honest with you um and we all had our hands full dealing with Jaylen tonight you know I thought he uh he he he put on a clinic uh in the game you know his patience he just manipulated the defense the whole night

He got got everybody in foul trouble I just you know he he he put on a matchable m masterful performance you mentioned uh you know before the game tonight that you know a game like yesterday there a lot of teaching moments you know with scoot you know he

Got in foul trouble last night struggled from the field tonight is that a situation where you don’t need to say much or how do you communicate with a young player at his age to to make sure that he’s on track off a couple of rough

Games yeah you got to you you got to change it up sometimes you know sometimes you right after the game you talk to them sometimes you text them late at night sometimes you watch the next morning you watch it you know after the emotion is gone down scooter is um

He’s very so competitive you know he’s so competitive you can see him out there you know in games if a guy scores on him or if he turns it over like he’s really hard on himself um so I got to kind I change up how I address you know school and this

Is not only not only when he’s struggling this is when he’s playing well too you know um as we’re learning each other you know know I’ve I’ve learned and I I kind of got to mix it up on him

  1. Tanking for who!? Great decision to sit Simons against the teams with elite defense. Got to keep his mirage stats glowing to ship him out!
