Market valuation for the player as a free agent would have been comfortably in the low 20s for Gary Tren Jr to sign on a long-term deal to get him through the likely prime years of his career but instead he opted to go for the $18 million player option which was a a

Little bit confusing he could have turned that down and signed for any team in the NBA he could have turned that down and signed a long-term extension with the Raptors but he decided to take on that $18 million player option which usually is a bet onyour yourself sort of

Maneuver for an NBA player to take on so we I guess had some sort of indication that Gary Trent could kick on in this NBA season I felt as though Gary Trent Jr was poised to have a big year not just for the fact that it was a contract

Year and a contract year where it was a bet on yourself sort of maneuver at that we also bringing in a new coach that had a much more seemingly tactical approach to the way the Raptors played offense that I thought would very much catered to Gary Trent Jr’s game and honestly

Just hasn’t really panned out that way though he’s taken his game to another level in the second half of the Season it still probably isn’t quite the heights we were imagining for Gary Trent when he arrived from the Portland Trail lasers and was showing out as a 22 23y

Old for the Raptors there just hasn’t really been that developmental leap for Gary Trent Jr it’s kind of sad to say that yes he is a very good NBA player and there are tons of teams would love to have a player like this on their books but in terms of overall

Development reshaping his game in the years he’s been with the Raptors is there one real attribute we can say has taken those next steps not really unfortunately but even still a very talented player who shoots the hell out of the ball from out from the outside

And there are tons of NBA teams who need players like that and in particular the Raptors have been one of those teams for a quite a long time at this point that’s kind of reshaping itself more shooting is creeping into the Raptor’s roster but Gary Tren junor can still be a pivotal

Player for this team and if those additional attributes like being a good Defender like being a bigger threat on the inside like being a bigger threat in terms of his ball handling if those things aren’t necessarily going to come for the player then we can find tuna’s

Game a little bit differently give him a bit of a lesser role on offense but focus on these specific things that make him such a great player which is you know the catch and shoot game Gary Tren Jr is one of the very best players in

Off the bench for the player and in particular in the 30 games that he has come off the bench for the Raptors this season his stats haven’t been the most impressive overall he’s averaged about 24 minutes per game in that span where he is coming off the bench and he’s

Scoring 10.7 points per game on just about 41% shooting from the field and 37.5% shooting from three that’s not overly impressive and somebody who has been big on getting steals in the past only averaging 0.6 steals per game especially on that end of the ball not anything crazy and again this is a

Player who had averaged 16 17 18 points per game previously for the Raptors who had plummeted down to some who wasn’t providing much significance on the court the final time Gary Trent Jr came off the bench for the rapt this season with the January 12th Affair

Barnes there but you really do want to be having a true point guard in your starting five well then you want a shooter as well so who do you take it other than that you’re not going to take out ogan no you’re not going to take out

Knack to do that so if he’s not good enough to be a starter which perhaps on a team that’s a little bit more serious I’m not sure if Gary chin Jr super fits into that group he’s a nice complimentary fifth man sort of player but I don’t know if the Raptors are in

The position right now where they can have that sort of role carved out for a player that’s where the difficulties arise going forward for Gary Trent so what’s changed for Gary Trent this season well he’s been starting games now I think that there is I can’t I don’t

Want to just simplify it to he’s starting versus he’s not starting that’s a difference in statistics the team has sharpened up offensively he’s playing with the starters therefore he’s playing less with bench players because darko’s strategy for benches this season have been all four bench players on with one

Was completely healthy that being said is there room for Gary Tren junor in the future of this franchise potentially I’ve definitely come off my stance that I’m at I was at the point probably mid-season where I was like well honestly if he walked would that be the worst thing in the

World wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world however at this point you don’t want to lose that sort of valuation Gary Trent Jr is a solid player and he has a place in the NBA I think he does have a place in the Raptors going forward would

Be even better if he could come off the bench successfully but there is a role for him somewhere out there so if the Raptors can capitalize on this asset bring it back to the team on an$ 18 to$ 22 million contract per year they have options down the line of trading him if
