The Game Changing Moves That SAVED His Toronto Raptors Future

The Game Changing Moves That SAVED His Toronto Raptors Future

Gary Tren Jr has seemingly taken his game to a new level in the second half of this NBA season and it might just have saved the shooting guards Toronto Raptor’s future so my question for this video is just how has he done it let’s get into it this is amateur sports the YouTube

Channel dedicated to Toronto Raptor news coverage and Analysis and videos like this as well as live stream watch parties for every Raptor game yes even admits the tank going on at the current moment so if you like what you see from today’s video then make sure you do hit

The like button it does support the channel and subscribe to the channel we’re less than 50 Subs away from 177,000 here and not only did you get the great Raptor content in return but when we do hit that Milestone we’re giving away to Raptor jerseys into the

Community it’s a great time to join The Amateur hour Army but today’s video is all about Gary Trent Jr and how he’s managed to take his game to a new level in the second half of this NBA season and this is a newel that might have just saved his Toronto Raptor career because

Earlier on in the season we saw the levels from Gary Trent Jr completely plummet to where we’ve seen it previously in his first couple years in the with the Raptors he’s looked like a pretty comfortable 16 17 18 possibly even 19 points per game player and still

Very young while he was doing it and seemingly was going to continue to grow like G Tren Jr was regarded as like one of the vets of the team at this current Point Gary J Jr is 25 years old still potential for him still a long way for

Him to go potentially in his NBA career but we weren’t sure if that future was going to be in Toronto things were confusing the offseason for the Raptors particularly with Gary Trent Jr who had a player option worth about $18 million though it did seem as though any sort of

Market valuation for the player as a free agent would have been comfortably in the low 20s for Gary Tren Jr to sign on a long-term deal to get him through the likely prime years of his career but instead he opted to go for the $18 million player option which was a a

Little bit confusing he could have turned that down and signed for any team in the NBA he could have turned that down and signed a long-term extension with the Raptors but he decided to take on that $18 million player option which usually is a bet onyour yourself sort of

Maneuver for an NBA player to take on so we I guess had some sort of indication that Gary Trent could kick on in this NBA season I felt as though Gary Trent Jr was poised to have a big year not just for the fact that it was a contract

Year and a contract year where it was a bet on yourself sort of maneuver at that we also bringing in a new coach that had a much more seemingly tactical approach to the way the Raptors played offense that I thought would very much catered to Gary Trent Jr’s game and honestly

Just hasn’t really panned out that way though he’s taken his game to another level in the second half of the Season it still probably isn’t quite the heights we were imagining for Gary Trent when he arrived from the Portland Trail lasers and was showing out as a 22 23y

Old for the Raptors there just hasn’t really been that developmental leap for Gary Trent Jr it’s kind of sad to say that yes he is a very good NBA player and there are tons of teams would love to have a player like this on their books but in terms of overall

Development reshaping his game in the years he’s been with the Raptors is there one real attribute we can say has taken those next steps not really unfortunately but even still a very talented player who shoots the hell out of the ball from out from the outside

And there are tons of NBA teams who need players like that and in particular the Raptors have been one of those teams for a quite a long time at this point that’s kind of reshaping itself more shooting is creeping into the Raptor’s roster but Gary Tren junor can still be a pivotal

Player for this team and if those additional attributes like being a good Defender like being a bigger threat on the inside like being a bigger threat in terms of his ball handling if those things aren’t necessarily going to come for the player then we can find tuna’s

Game a little bit differently give him a bit of a lesser role on offense but focus on these specific things that make him such a great player which is you know the catch and shoot game Gary Tren Jr is one of the very best players in

The NBA when it comes to taking open threo shots now when he’s covered when there’s a hand up those stats deviate away however there is still a lot of value for Gary Trent Jr not the $26 million Pere contract that had been floated around the offseason I thought

Would have been on the way for the Raptors and for Gary Tren junor if Pascal was traded in the off season so maybe thankfully he wasn’t traded but still a very very very serviceable NBA player likely to get still in the range of $18 to20 million a year on his next

Contract I just wasn’t sure based we saw in the first 30 games of the season for the player that we were going to see that next contract come for the player in Toronto because in the first 30 games of the season a lot of that was coming

Off the bench for the player and in particular in the 30 games that he has come off the bench for the Raptors this season his stats haven’t been the most impressive overall he’s averaged about 24 minutes per game in that span where he is coming off the bench and he’s

Scoring 10.7 points per game on just about 41% shooting from the field and 37.5% shooting from three that’s not overly impressive and somebody who has been big on getting steals in the past only averaging 0.6 steals per game especially on that end of the ball not anything crazy and again this is a

Player who had averaged 16 17 18 points per game previously for the Raptors who had plummeted down to some who wasn’t providing much significance on the court the final time Gary Trent Jr came off the bench for the rapt this season with the January 12th Affair

Against the Utah Jazz where it was one of the more typical games from Gary Trent Jr flew under the radar didn’t really do much had five points on two of six shooting one of two shooting from three and we were getting a little bit more accustomed to the player not

Actually having any sort of meaningful impact on the floor but that’s when things changed and how did those things change well we’ve seen over the last few years with Gary Tren Jr in Toronto he just hasn’t knacked for performing better when he’s in the starting five

Compared to when he’s coming off of the bench and that was the last time Gary Tren Jr played a game for the Toronto Raptors with Pascal sakim as his teammate Gary Tren Jr missed the next game against the Boston Celtics which was Pascal siakam’s final game for the

Raptors so when the Miami Heat rolled into town on January 17th Gary Tren Jr started for the Raptors and has been a starter in any every game that he has featured for the Raptor since that point and what a turnaround for Gary Tren Jr when he started because

In this game against the Miami Heat the Raptors win by 24 points Gary Tren Jr leads the way with 28 for the Raptors on 10 of 13 shooting and since Gary Tren Jr has become a starter for the Raptors his stats have completely turned around he

Started a few games the start of the year just when players were injured but in the 31 games that he has played as he started this season he’s jumped up to 14.6 points per game in 30 minutes of play time 1.4 Steals and you know points

Per game steals per game those stats go up with a bit of an increase in minutes like an extra six minutes per game yeah it’s somewhat significant but now all of a sudden he’s shooting 43% from the field now all of a sudden he’s shooting 43% from three so what has changed for

Gary Tren Jr to Showcase statistics like this well I think part of it is as the season has gone on the Raptors offense has just gotten a little bit better we’ve had players that more so fit into to the way dark rakovich is kind of forcing this team to play wanted to play

A certain branded basketball to start the season didn’t have the players to do it didn’t change just stuck to his guns wanted to play that sort of style of basketball no matter who is on his team so as a raptors have kind of catered towards that a little bit more with

Emanuel quickley coming into the team with RJ Barrett coming into the team the Raptor offense as a whole has gotten better and I think that’s aiding Gary Tren Jr with the overall floor spacing and his understanding of what his role within this roster is going to be that

Being said Gary Trent Jr is there enough here for this player to be a consistent starter for this team going forward because I’m sick of really having these sorts of arguments around Gary Trent in the lineup to start the season for the Raptors the Raptors had cakam they had

Barnes they had Schroeder they had OG they had purle not really a lot of space for Gary Trent to start in that team like who would you take out would you take out Dennis Schroeder a lot of people would but then you have no point guard in the lineup streak but Scotty

Barnes there but you really do want to be having a true point guard in your starting five well then you want a shooter as well so who do you take it other than that you’re not going to take out ogan no you’re not going to take out

Pascal seak you’re not going to take out Scotty Barnes you’re not going to take out yakob purle because we’ve seen without yakob Perle with the Raptors this season they’re atrocious he’s a very good rim protector and a necessary part of the team so there’s no space for

Gary Tren Jr in the starting five and the fact that Gary Trent Jr performs better as a starter than as a bench player should not put yourself in a position where you’re forced to start him like the conversation shouldn’t be why does garyan Jr perform better as a

Starter the conversation should be why does Gary Tren Jr perform worse when he’s coming off of the bench because the reality in Toronto right now is Grady dick is on the rise and he’s a shooting guard who’s probably worth giving a look in taking over that starting shooting

Guard position for Gary Trent Jr when the team is fully healthy hopefully going into the next season so if you do want to focus on your Young Star Grady dick and you do want to move Gary Trent Jr to the bench one could only expect that these stats that have been

Relatively consistent in his three full seasons with Toronto including this one where his stats just are not the same when he’s coming off the bench compared to when he’s a starter for this team like even in the the days with Nick nurse where you’re actually staggering starter minutes and you’re not just

Playing four bench players on the floor at the same time with one starter where spacing might be a bit more limited under darkar rakovich even in the nick nurse days like these sorts of Statistics would once again present themselves he just simply performs better as a starter he just has that

Knack to do that so if he’s not good enough to be a starter which perhaps on a team that’s a little bit more serious I’m not sure if Gary chin Jr super fits into that group he’s a nice complimentary fifth man sort of player but I don’t know if the Raptors are in

The position right now where they can have that sort of role carved out for a player that’s where the difficulties arise going forward for Gary Trent so what’s changed for Gary Trent this season well he’s been starting games now I think that there is I can’t I don’t

Want to just simplify it to he’s starting versus he’s not starting that’s a difference in statistics the team has sharpened up offensively he’s playing with the starters therefore he’s playing less with bench players because darko’s strategy for benches this season have been all four bench players on with one

Starter very rarely would that one starter be Gary Trent Jr but if he’s coming off the bench he’s surrounded by an overall inferior cast of players than he would be when he’s in the starting five playing with better teammates better teammates take more attention from the defense more attention from the

Defense means more space on the outside for Gary Trent Jr to operate so I think there’s been a simplification of his game since the start of the Season he’s more focused on shooting the three ball the open threes not as much of taking guys off the dribble not as much as

Taking guys to the rim that’s helped with the efficiency the Raptor offense overall has gotten a little bit better which is aiding gon Jr and starting gives him a better surrounding cast of players even though right now the starting five thrs would typically be what a bench lineup would be if the team

Was completely healthy that being said is there room for Gary Tren junor in the future of this franchise potentially I’ve definitely come off my stance that I’m at I was at the point probably mid-season where I was like well honestly if he walked would that be the worst thing in the

World wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world however at this point you don’t want to lose that sort of valuation Gary Trent Jr is a solid player and he has a place in the NBA I think he does have a place in the Raptors going forward would

Be even better if he could come off the bench successfully but there is a role for him somewhere out there so if the Raptors can capitalize on this asset bring it back to the team on an$ 18 to$ 22 million contract per year they have options down the line of trading him if

They want to do that but losing him for free wouldn’t really solve anything overall that being said next season my preference would be if the team is completely healthy based on who is likely to be on the roster next season Grady dick would be my starting shooting

Guard Gary Trent want to again will be relegated to the bench where we would have probably these same sorts of conversations about why Gary Tren Jr can’t perform as well Off the Bench like he does as a starter and maybe that’s when some more trade conversations do

Creep in but what do you make of Gary Tren J’s game overall what’s been the biggest difference when he starts versus when he comes off the bench and how much would you pay him in the offseason if anything to stay in Toronto give me your thoughts and opinions in the comments

  1. what will determine if gary stays with the team will be how much he wants. i dont think he is worth resigning at 26 million a year.

  2. Not related to the topic but I don't think Gradey Dick gets the next start after that jersey swap with Magic player Black 😂😂😂

  3. GTJ is our family favorite player. Besides
    his good looks, fashion,
    involvement in the
    community he's a great
3pt shooter 41% (27 in NBA) We would extend
    him 3/63 mil ❤🥵🌠

  4. As long as he hits his threes, there's going to be some team with huge cap space that will overpay him in free agency.

  5. Only way I want Gary on the team nexy year is if he's good taking 2yrs at 10 mil per with a team option. What does he do well? He's a streaky shooter who isn't clutch. He doesn't rebound, assist, defend or finish at the net well. Plus, he plays like garbage off the bench which would his position on a good team.
