Who the Utah Jazz should pick in the 2024 NBA Draft w/ Leif Thulin

All right welcome back to the Hoops ner show I’m uh joined by someone today I’m excited to talk about this is leaf tan he is a broadcast assistant for the Utah Jazz he is a producer of the 700 he is on the NBA bigboard podcast with Rafael

Barlo who does a great job and you guys are awesome I listen to you guys pretty regularly and great Insight if you haven’t gone and subscribed to that podcast make sure you do that right away and also he is a three-time state tennis champ Champion which I tell you what is

Pretty impressive I played School tennis and no easy task was that in singles doubles what was that it was singles I I grew up playing a lot of tennis kind of took a break going into high school so I didn’t play my freshman year and then uh got back on the horse

And played a lot but uh I I’ve always loved basketball more than tennis but tennis I was definitely better at Holy Cow well yeah so you I mean okay I got a question for you because you’re obviously a great tennis player to win three times state champ is no small

Thing that’s a big deal like you know i’ be afraid it was it was at a small school though I I want to preface this that this is this is at at a smaller school like I can play tennis and and I’m not saying that like that I’m not

Good at tennis but but it’s not it’s not like some of these guys that are playing and they go immediately or are unbelievable top 50 players in the nation type of thing I I wasn’t there without the practice that they put in I was going to ask you what are your

Thoughts on pickle ball because I have uh I have an uncle who’s at he hates he hates pickle ball he’s a tennis pro in Arizona and he just has lived his life kind of at a country club trains people and he literally got fired

Because he got in a like a war with all the pickle Ballers I like playing pickle ball it’s easy it’s easy like I I’ve never really played it seriously but like volleying and pickle balls like the it’s a it’s like a slow little dink everything comes

In slowly compared to tennis so I like playing it um but it’s not as good a game as tennis like I think I’m happy people enjoy it because I enjoy pickle ball as well but it’s not it’s not like a a game in which you have to think it’s

Kind of reactive and if you’ve got handy coordination you’re pretty good which is they appeal to more people yeah well that’s great we’ll have to play sometime actually I love tennis um I’m actually not someone who really loves to watch Tennis you know there’s some people who

Love to play basketball but they’re not big like they don’t love watching it and kind of that way with tennis like I I you know I actually really loved watching like Serena Williams I loved Pete SAS back in the day but I’m just not these days a big tennis Watcher but

Anyways uh Leaf T is a expert on all things college basketball he knows um a lot of these prospects really well watches a ton and so I wanted to have him on and for you know I watch college basketball for draft prospects I’ll like I’ll like tune in highlights if there’s

A game on while I’m at the gym I’ll try to glance at it for some reason every time I’m at the gym Baylor is playing so I’ve seen a good amount of Like jacobe Walter but I wanted to have you on uh first I just wanted to ask if you can

Help out Jazz fans who are some teams they should have going far in their brackets when they fill those out well I mean that’s hard to tell but I I I think yukon’s the best team in the country uh the funny thing is thought they got the

Hardest region so the best team in the country kind of got screwed in the sense of you got the big 10 Champion the Big 12 Champion the SEC Champion as their next three seeds and I did that out of order so sorry for confusing people there I was just kind of thinking off

The top of my head but and then and then you have BYU who is a good team that was probably a five seed they came in as a six then you have San Diego State who I think is the best team in the Mountain West which is a six big league even

Though they weren’t the regular season or postseason champion in the Mountain West so that’s six and then your second round should FAU win like they didn’t play well honestly they’re probably overseed based off their resume but they just made the final four so they have this pedigree and expectation of winning

So I think yukon’s the best team in the country and I don’t think it’s particularly close I do a poll on locked on college basketball every week and I’ve had Yukon one pretty much every week of the year but uh I I don’t like their region and sometimes you take the

Path of least resistance and I I think Purdue has the easiest of all the one seeds awesome well great well um that’s well I’m gonna have Yukon go to number one I hope they win so yeah part part of me is think thinking about pulling an upset

Just because I think most people will will take Yukon and they’ll probably be right but sometimes you got to be smart and sometimes you get try to be too smart and and I’m I’m towing that line right now I I haven’t completed my bracket though you know that’s the thing

And it probably influenced my thinking in the draft last year because I actually really liked Keon George for Baylor last year and I had them going pretty far I honestly thought Keon has a chance to just because I’ve always felt like in the tournament if you have really great

Guards you can you can you know win a lot of games I mean and I thought maybe he would and that didn’t happen so but anyways uh let’s see I wanted to ask before we get into bracket or to draft prospects a little bit a lot of jazz

Fans there’s a lot of divide there’s Jazz fans that think the Jazz didn’t tank enough last year there’s Jazz fans that think the Jazz should be you know trading some of these draft picks for players and try to be a little bit better around the edges what are your

What are your thoughts on the current trajectory of the Jazz right now and what do you foresee for them going you know into next season and and Beyond there well just to set the scene for jazz fans as most of them who who will listen to this know the Jazz have a top

10 protected pick so the reason for the trades and then the sudden decline where the Jazz are three in uh what is it 14 now since the trade deadline and so that that’s that’s not good I’m not trying to spin anything there that that’s that’s impressive but it it’s for a purpose and

You have the chance to get someone that can really elevate your franchise and hopefully you can do so before the year 2026 which is when should the Jazz not convey a pick to the Thunder before then then they would not have a first- round pick and then they would not have a pick

Swap with either the Timberwolves or the Cavaliers and that’s important to know because that’s part of the reason that the Jazz really wanted that the the deals and why they want to build the franchise so that their their pick should be better than either one of the Cavaliers or the Timberwolves and they

Have both the pick swaps and so the Timberwolves probably aren’t going to get worse they have Anthony Edwards and he’s spectacular and then you have the Cavaliers Donovan Mitchell could leave the Cavs within that time frame which would leave them susceptible to being worse so the Jazz need to have a pick

And that’s why finding out and and having a like a decision made is a fair thing to be frustrated about because the Jazz this year started 3 and8 you start 3 and8 and you’re like oh well I guess this is going to be a top 10 pick time

Because we were protecting it then the Jazz go 19 and seven over a stretch and it kind of get back to 500 24 and 24 26 and 26 and that’s when the Jazz the wheels fall off so as a jazz fan myself who also works for organization I saw

What was happening but I get I get the frustration there I don’t think you can be frustrated with winning unless you already at the start of the the season had committed yourself as one of those fans that was oh I I want us to tank like that’s okay but I think the people

Who kind of fluctuate back and forth and said well we were winning like why are we doing this are are being misinformed by what the the reality of the situation is you’re winning to the degree of making a playin tournament and I don’t think the Jazz really viewed themselves

As contenders to make it out of the playin tournament make it into the playoffs and yes some of the players were disappointed and the direction was they were getting better they were playing better basketball because they’re 10 men were better than the other teams seven or eight but their top

Five which is what is prioritized in playoff basketball weren’t as good as a lot of those teams that were ahead of them so that’s a longwinded way of saying the direction is that the Jazz need to build through the draft and they have assets so yes you could you could

Talk yourself into trading for a player that’s on a NBA roster using those picks so I still think that’s building through the draft uh as for players in particular that I like I I haven’t narrowed it down for like jazz specific fits but there are players that I like

More than others and this is a draft where it’s really going to be relying on gut instincts and and the way you foresee your development program helping a player because there’s no one that can’t miss there’s not there’s not some like there’s I’ve seen boards that have

Reed Shepard from Kentucky who’s a 62 uh guard who really shoots the ball well he’s got all the intangibles plays good defense in college basketball in terms of production Steals and blocks but he’s not a point of attack Defender be labeled as the number one pick but he’s

Also compared to Derek white who is a one of the best point of attack Defenders like I think there’s a lot of people that can misconstrue these things and no one would take Derek white number one overall even if he were that so this is where you have to rely on your

Scouting staff type of year and then your front office has to have a direction for the Jazz yeah I mean I we do a tank ofon mock every night um on that postgame show and yeah Reed Shepard they have him at four and I guess I did want to ask

You about him um do you like him for the I mean if if he’s someone what are your thoughts on him because I don’t know a lot I’ve seen things about his defense his shooting obviously but what you don’t like him for the Jetson uh not at

All and I would be pretty darn stunned if he was the pick uh the the reason being is he’s a great shooter like I’m not having I know if hands or buts he’s a great shooter I think he’s probably the best shooter in this class but he’s

6′ one 6’2 two guard and yes he has the defensive chops that people will cut up highlights of of him getting steals or kind of Trail three blocks where he comes around a pick and he puts his hand on the top of the ball there shoot a

Three um and he’s got a great anticipation but he’s not a point of attack Defender and he’s not big the Jazz have seen and have been felt this burn of having diminutive guard Defenders like they’re not going to replicate that which is what really cost them people will talk about well like

Goar didn’t do much offensively or like it was the switchability that we lacked is our issue no our whole scheme under Quinn Snyder was to funnel everything into goar that made us a relevant defense we weren’t the best in the NBA but we heard near the best in the NBA

Because we had the best defender in the NBA and Rudy goar it was the point of attack defense that was terrible and that was spearheaded by two offensively brilliant guards who are diminutive in stature so I say all that to say this keontay George is a little bigger than

Donovan Mitchell in terms of height but his wingspan’s not bigger Donovan was more of an effort issue because he was a great defender when he wanted to be he came out of Louisville and that was best trait was defense under Rick patino and then in game seven of the Jazz and

Nuggets Donovan burned himself out playing tremendous defense but for the large majority we just couldn’t stop the ball with two guards so I don’t think the Jazz will go with a diminutive guard because we do have Keon George who is a piece for the future and one that could

Be a special piece for the future awesome yeah that’s great so I I actually wanted to ask you um let’s say so we do this we do the Sim lottery every night in the last two nights we’ve been in the top four so I don’t know doesn’t mean anything but let’s say the

Jazz jump into the top four who are kind of your top four guys this year I know Alexander SARS up there is he up there for you or is there what’s your top four look like see I I haven’t made a a board that I really feel confident in and I

Know that’s that’s not a great answer but it’s just hard to level the playing field of competition where Alexander star when he comes here into the Showcase and plays the g- league he has a special special game like he was awesome and then he’s has games where he

Scores nine points and gets six rebounds and some of the more recent International prospects have been MVPs of their league Luca donic obviously he’s a sensational player but but it’s it’s different to say I’m gonna put my future on this guy um who has traits but hasn’t put it together in in an

Australian League like what leads me to believe this yes when Bama stats were at times pedestrian before he switched teams last year so uh SAR would be up there I think he’s in my top three firmly I think think of him as like Evan Moy light I don’t think he’s as good of

A prospect as Moy was uh nicoa topic would be up there for me in the sense that topich if he hits on all of his traits I think he could have the highest ceiling of these guys because pick and roll Navigators and jumbo facilitators like bigger guys that can handle the

Ball are really in Vogue right now and then I really like Cody Williams from Colorado I think he’s I love Cody okay I’m glad you he’s a little bit raw right now he’s just a little too slender have the physicality but he’s got this kind of

Touch for the game this this gu that is along a 6’8 100 80 pound body that you you feel like you can mold and then the last one if I were to name four I guess I I’ll give you five I I think Ron Holland I came into this year with my as

My number one and he’s been kind of a roller coaster he’s been up and down you see flashes but the one thing you know him is he’s going to compete he’s going to defend and should he develop some of those offensive traits that’s a guy that you could see having a role that’s

Similar to the guys that you think of as today’s best players and I don’t know if I I think he’s got quite that offensive capacity but at least that’s the role and then the last one would be uh re saay who I I’ll admit I have not watched

As much of him as I have the others so I know less but think of Michael Porter Jr type of length and shooting at if if if he truly hits his his ceiling that’s kind of what you’re thinking but I but there seems to be some people have

Optimism about him playing with the ball in his hands which is what you’d want in a number one pick and there are others that are skeptical and at this point I haven’t watched enough to really know how I feel about that but those were those would be the five candidates I

Would say if I’m in the top five that I would Circle for jazz fans yeah I honestly I I think that’s I think you’re exactly right I mean you talk about Ron Holland and it really was just a not a very impressive kind of year for him in

The g- league ignite but I don’t know if anyone on g- League ignite really had one and it might not have been their fault um he kind of is the guy that may more be like Derek white than people saying that Reed Shepard is like a Dereck white if

Yes ask me just because of I he’s a little bit bigger he’s got more athleticism and he can actually kind of be that guy is he really 68 they’re saying here Ron Holland’s 6 foot eight is he really that big I I don’t know for certain but I don’t think he’s that tall

Yeah I was gonna say that I mean if he’s 68 that you know that matters uh okay so let’s say the Jazz um and there’s one guy I want to ask you about specifically that I personally really like it seems like a lot of people are kind of mixed

Feelings on him I really like Stefan Castle just because I like the physical attributes the stuff I’ve seen from him um he’s got rebounding he looks like he’s got potential as a Defender if he wants to um he kind of moves he kind of reminds me the way he moves reminds me a

Little bit of Alec Burks a tiny bit just the like his mannerisms even um uh but he seems to be like someone That Could Fall around the Jazz seem to be like they’ll at some point be in the 8 to 10 range I don’t think they’re going to win

Enough to convey and I don’t think they’re going to lose enough to get really higher than eight um so who are some guys that you like I like Stefan Castle potentially in that range who are some guys you like for the jazs kind of in that range yeah he’s certainly

Someone I’m intrigued by I don’t I don’t have a sense of if he can shoot or not yet because numbers would dictate he can’t but he would also watch Yukon and you well he’s asked to be a slasher because Tristan Newton and cam Spencer are two of the best Shooters in

The Big East and those are the other two backourt mates uh they kind of play an inverted style in which a lot of their players uh are very good Shooters and so they they use their shooting gravity to then drive and set up uh Donovan klling

And their big guy so I’m very intrigued by Castle I think he’s got all the traits in the world but a jump shot for me to really buy him as being one of those top tier guys in this class um but I just it’s hard to get so enamored by

It because in years past some of the guys that I feel like I’ve missed on have been Anthony black for instance who I actually still believe will be a good player but I loved I loved what he did at Arkansas because in a in a terrible shooting team Arkansas was awful

Shooting the ball last year he was able to get to the paint and create Havoc defensively and offensively he did good things um but he just hasn’t been able to shoot some of the other guys that I’ve missed on have been guys have all these traits who haven’t shot Castle’s

Done it on a better team which makes me think oh well maybe maybe he’d shoot more maybe shoot more confidently but maybe his his efficiency would go down should he be on a team in which uh he was asked to do more so I have that

Hesitancy but my my gut is that I’m going going to really like him when I do a full Deep dive of just watching him as opposed to just watching Yukon as a team yeah it’s hard because those those types of guys if they do end up being able to

Shoot they’re the guys that become the steel of the draft but there’s a lot more guys that don’t figure it out than do it seems like so but I I just I just like the size you can’t I mean he just has like a physical kind of

Impressiveness to him that I I just really like um who are some other guys in that range that you kind of like have you seen tane is it Tan Salon yeah ton Salon that yeah I I I have seen him I like what I see

Because I think for a guy who would be labeled as kind of like theoretical like if this guy pans out he’s an athlete who can run and and he’ll develop further skills I think he’s ahead of the curve as a shooter for that type of label that

He’s been given um I I don’t think he’s a dead eye by any means at this point but he’s kind of been given that like athlete label of oh we got to mold him and this is what he could be well he’s disruptive defensively he seems to be

Fluid when he has the ball in his hands and shoots it at a clip that I think is respect so I do like him I I put him in my top 10 and the only big board I’ve done I haven’t updated that in like a month and

A half two months so I don’t know if I still would I don’t know exactly who’s moved where in my mind I just kind of have notes on a lot of different players and I’ll continue to build those uh but but I I like the way he plays if if the

Jazz get above eight like I know they’re likely to be eight through 10 if they get above eight I don’t like that pick as much just because I think there’s a few players that project sooner but I do I do like that idea and like I think

He’ll be likened a lot by many people to like Bel kabali in the sense that he’ll get that extra push of like oh wow a lot of teams like him like he could project similarly in kabali so far I would say would be a success story for the

Expectations that many had early in his career whereas everyone was expecting it to be later where the dividends were paid but he went at number seven um what do you think about jacobe Walter I mean I for me just my personal opinion I don’t know if I look look at

Him as this highlevel Defender um but he does he I guess he kind of reminds me a little bit of keante where it’s like you saw these you know this skill set and the percentages aren’t great but you see him play and it looks it looks good uh

What do you think of jacobe Walter I was prepared to really like him but the more I’ve watched the less I’ve liked uh I think he lacks wiggle like he he does not beat people off the dribble he’s a good shooter despite his numbers I think his shots really good and will

Project forward but I just uh I I just don’t like the way that he dribbles the ball so if if you’re picking someone just on shooting then you’d want him to be a three and D like you kind of made illusion to uh if you were to pick

Someone to be a a combo guard that you think can help you be a lead score I would Express hesitation just because I I watched I’ve watched Baylor plenty and I I’ll watch him get switched onto centers and you’re like okay here you go like a NBA caliber guard against a a big

12 Center who are good athletes the big 12’s the best league in terms of athleticism defense um or at least defense I think athleticism might be the SEC but I digress uh I I think you expect him to win those matchups and he never does or very rarely does do beat

His man he really doesn’t he doesn’t beat his man he doesn’t I don’t see him like cramming it on I don’t know whereas keante uh and this is this is funny and those of you who listen to lockon NBA bigboard have heard this numerous times

I I had covid after Fourth of July in 2022 so I was just sitting in my room bored and I was like oh well there’s this thing called the PanAm Gams I might as well watch um it’s and it was Baylor without Adam Flagler without LJ CER at

The time uh playing against Italy and Canada U23 teams and I was like oh like that sounds fun I’ll watch this Keon George had 37 and 32 and I I wrote and this is before before this comparison became like everything you heard because like the season college basketball was

Still four or five months away I was like man this guy looks like Jamal Murray like this guy has the ball in his hands he’s not a natural playmaker but he scores and I can see a way where he gets into dangerous positions and facilitates from those positions drawing

Off of his ability to score well and little did I know that would become his like main comparison um and I’m sure there were people that were ahead of me that watched him in high school more than I did like I knew who he was he was

A he was a big time name since he was like 14 years old but as the as I watched Baylor throughout the year keonte George didn’t look good because he gained too much weight and he talked about this where he was playing at 225 to play the small forward because the

The backb was small at Baylor and he lost his explosiveness but he still had that wiggle he still had that shot making ability even though his percentages were similar to Walters and not indicative of how well they actually shoot the basketball then I went to the

NBA Combine and I watched these Pro days and most these guys at the pro days that actually did them shot terribly like I was high on CD Soka who I know is a different archetype wasn’t meant to be a shooter but it’s it’s an open gym like

These guys should be able to make shots I watched GG Jackson who I was very high on I still I still am high on and I think that one will be proven right even though he had a terrible terrible pro day he couldn’t make up shot and there

Was a multitude of other guys that couldn’t shoot at all well Keon made every shot he took and he was calm relaxed went through point guard drills and I I tapped the guy next to me Richard who who’s on lock NBA big board and I was like man I might have to move

Him back up even though we’d been like critical of him I saw him play in person at March Madness twice and he did nothing absolutely nothing against kraton or UC Santa Barbara looked lethargic looked indifferent and then I watched him his very first Summer League game before Vegas when he was in Salt

Lake yeah and and I was like oh he’s trying to be a point guard too much like like you could see like he was thinking the game like getting like I’m like I’m not g to shoot and then the second half he had like a a brief surge of like oh

I’m gonna play basketball then he played the next two was great went to Vegas was Sensational before he sprained his ankle I I think keontay George is a far better Prospect and was a far better Prospect coming in than jacobe Walter it just got misconstrued because he played a

Position that wasn’t his so I think they’re naturally goingon to be likened to one another but Keon George was and is the better Prospect and obviously seeing with the Jazz like hindsight bias is real but I but I don’t think this is too much of hindsight it’s that we moved

Keon too low because we punished him for what he was playing at weightwise and playing out of position yeah and I don’t want to keep you too long um I did want to ask you so I don’t know if you know or have an idea of someone who might be like this

Draft’s Keon George or the person that really becomes the steel of the draft one of those that I’m kind of wondering about and for some reason he’s really Fallen I know USC has had a really disappointing year for everyone but Isaiah ker is like at least on tank ofon

They have him at 15 and at one point people had him at like number one and I’m wondering is that something where people are overthinking it or do you agree should he be dropping down that far that’s interesting to liken Keon and klier uh my hesitation about klier is he doesn’t shoot

Well and he’s like a a Burly guard who likes to drive and put his body into you which in high school was great because no one could stop him from getting to Rim so why would you settle to shoot a jumper well it becomes a problem when

You can’t shoot the jumper and now you kind of like lack this confidence he’s like a rhythm jump shooter like if he makes it then great but you have to be such a tremendous athlete like the the ilk of Russ Russell Westbrook at a peak

Of his powers or or Derek Rose and and the games were different back then and I’m not comparing Collier whatsoever to those guys but to to be a reluctant jump shot shooter who’s like a rhythm shooter you have to be like that to be someone

That I think can have the keys to a franchise and that’s what you’d be picking klier for like in theory I don’t think that’s what he is so while I think he’s probably getting underrated talent-wise because of a terrible start to the year and then he got injured uh I

I wouldn’t say he’s quite cut the upside Keon does knowing what we know now that keante is capable of scoring 30 points in an NBA game and running an offense and I maybe maybe in year two and three Keon can be a 20 aame score and I don’t

Think that’s out of the of possibility for the Utah Jazz I I just don’t see that for Collier at any point in the rookie contract um but but I do think he’s being undervalued for the talent level he possesses um let’s see finally just I

Just wanted to ask you before I let you go um the Jazz have two picks they have that uh first round pick or they have three they have the late first round and then they have a second round pick that looks like the 31 basically uh are there

Are there some guys there that the Jazz That Jazz to go look at and just to get familiar with that you like for the Jazz uh I I’ve been vocal that I think the Jazz should go with wings later and and guys that can play multiple positions uh someone someone I think’s

Really good and I’ll probably have my top 20 that that is a very good college player so you can see him make a run perhaps in March Madness would be Baylor shyan of kraton uh I’ve seen him as low as unranked on tank ofon and I have him

In my top 20 so maybe maybe I’m crazy but he fills in the stat sheet he scores he’s a third team All-American it was released today um but he scores he’ll defend he rebounds really well he shoots it very well played point guard for three years before transferring up to

Kraton became a small forward uh I like him I like Jaylen Tyson of Cal who they didn’t make the tournament but he’s a guy who played different roles he was kind of an athlete role in his previous stops and then became a guy with the ball in his hands and and and flourished

Which you typically don’t see players do so and improve their percentages um those would be two I’d look at that I think are being undervalued and of course you’re going to have players that slip and you’re going to have other players that that you move up for you you really think are

Great but those are two that I think are very likely to be in that realm a possibility to be picked at 2930 and 31 32 type of deal awesome well that’s great hey thanks uh Lea this was awesome um guys if you haven’t already go to locked on

NBA Big Board uh make sure you subscribe to that anywhere else that you want people to go uh I I do a podcast mostly on college basketball I’ll probably incorporate some draft talk uh locked it’s like I I usually bring in locked on guests but it’s uh it’s called the

College hoops Hive it’s kind of something I used to do very regularly and I haven’t had as much time but I’ll occasionally put out a very in detail college basketball podcast which will touch on a lot of these guys um and yeah just follow on Twitter if you if you

Want a a lot of basketball cont content uh and and Tennis occasionally I’ll break down some tennis talk but but there’ll be a lot of draft content there in college basketball analysis just in my my Twitter’s just my my name so it’s pretty simple awesome yeah guys go to

The college hoops Hive I see it right here make sure you go get give um Leaf a five star rating And subscribe to that that would be awesome and and yeah follow le le leaf on uh on Twitter Leaf to Lan so and I’ll put that in the description everything well thanks Leaf

I really appreciate it this was great of course have a great day

I was excited to be joined by Leif Thulin of Locked on NBA Big Board, the College Hoops Hive, ESPN 700, and a Utah Jazz Broadcast Assistant to discuss all things Utah Jazz and the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft.

First we talked about the Utah Jazz now and what their direction is. Where are the Jazz going? Are they tanking, are they looking to convey their pick? Thulin gave his thoughts on that and what the Jazz are doing.

We then talked about the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft and different potential players in the draft. If the Jazz jump into the top four, Thulin gave his top four players and who he thinks the Jazz might be interested in. We then talked about players that will be potentially available around the 8-10 range and who he likes for the Jazz.

Finally, we talked about some players that will possibly be there late in the first and who Thulin likes.
