Why the Sacramento Kings Loss to the Washington Wizards is Hard to Get Over | Locked On Kings

There is a major part of me that just wants to take this Kings loss crumple it into a ball throw it away and forget about it chalk it up to a bad performance in a stretch of really good Kings basketball in fact the best basketball that I think this Kings Group

Sports Anchor and reporter for ABC 10 News there have been losses at times this season where you have been frustrated and I’ve come on the lock on Kings podcast and I’ve been disappointed but I haven’t been as angry or upset as I’ve seen many of you Kings fans act

There have been games and losses where I feel like I’ve kind of been the voice of reason like a calming presence like it’s okay it’s just one game move on from it the kings are fine it doesn’t Define who who they are that ain’t me tonight right

This king’s loss 109 to 102 to the Washington Wizards has me hot and like I said I cannot just get over this loss and here’s why I’ll make it plain and simple for you this is why I cannot get over this king’s loss tonight December 26th lost to the Portland Trailblazers

January 2nd lost to the Charlotte Hornets February 7th loss to the Detroit Pistons and now March 21st loss to the Washington Wizards a Wizards team Who coming into tonight had only won two games in their last 23 the team with the worst home record in the league the

Kings just lost to them less than 24 hours after I was celebrating on yesterday’s lock on Kings podcast the Kings got the job done finally they recognized a short-handed weak opponent in the midst of this playoff race they went into Toronto dominated that game and were able to take the fourth quarter

Off and have limited minutes towards their Marquee players because they recognize the significance recognized how much better of a team they were actually played like it and handled their business not 24 hours later the Kings just lost to a worse team than the the Toronto Raptors every single time I feel like

This Kings team is taking steps forward it’s the story of this season every time it feels like this Kings team is making progress and these last five games to spent a lot of time yesterday talking about the last five games the five game Min Seasons as Mike Brown likes to break

His his year down into these last five games have been unbelievable for the Kings right I’ve spent all that time talking about it only for the Kings to come out and fall flat on their face again with all these losses piling up I didn’t even mention the blown lead to

The Milwaukee Bucks or the massive blown lead in the fourth quarter to the Phoenix Suns at least those are two good playoff teams or at least playoff expected teams in the sun’s case right but those losses in addition to other bad performances at home to to teams

That the Kings could have beaten and then these four losses to terrible teams that I just laid out the Western Conference playoff race is probably going to come down to one or two games one game is likely going to be the difference between the Kings being a playoff team outright and the Kings

Having to play an extra game at least in the playin tournament one game so I cannot get over this king’s loss to the uh to to the Washington Wizards tonight because they have burnt their safety net already they have used every get out of jail free card that they’ve had

Throughout this season they’ve already lost Bad Games Time and Time and Time Again four losses to teams not just below 500 Four losses to teams in the cellar of the NBA the only horrendous team that the Kings have not lost to is the is the San Antonio Spurs and they nearly did a

Handful of nights ago or like a week ago in Sacramento I don’t know what the issue is with this king’s team I’m tired of trying to figure it out sure we could just chalk it up to this is who the kings are but that doesn’t mean it is

Acceptable it’s not just that these bad losses are coming in a bad stretch right it’s not like the Kings lost five out of six games and three out of these four bad losses came during that stretch like I mentioned one of these losses to terrible teams each month since December

December January February March Portland Charlotte Detroit Washington this is not just a bad stretch this is a pattern this is consistently the kings are losing these winnable games making the same mistakes and suffering these inexplainable inexcusable losses spread out over the course of the Season that tells you

That’s who you are that says that this is an issue with your team at its core I’m not necessarily going to point the blame at any one guy in particular any group of guys as a team I don’t know if there needs to be another players

Only meeting I don’t know if the coaches need to sit down and talk to each other I don’t know what has to happen but as a team it’s a failure a complete failure now some of you might be going Matt this might feel like this seems like an

Overreaction right you were just talking about how good the Sacramento Kings were playing it’s not like their season is over right they’ve overcome bad losses many times before already this year you’re right you’re right and honestly I might wake up tomorrow and feel a little bit better

To be honest with you I was hoping that the Kings would find a way to win this game so that I could forget about it immediately like I would have had to spend 30 minutes talking about that win but then I would have flushed it from my

Brain because it was a horrendous Kings Performance period they played like maybe 10 to 11 minutes of good basketball in this game during those 10 to 11 minutes they dominated Detroit other than that they played terribly here are the things that make me angry about this game tonight the first one is

It has everything to do with me like shame on you know the the the saying like fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me we like fool me four times or five times at this point you best believe shame on me because like I

Said this is a pattern every single time it feels like this Kings team man they’re really making strides it’s another massive step back they’re playing better this is different they’re playing with defense Mike Brown has figured something out they’re play like they’re finally gotten their offense up

To that level we expect while the defense is playing at a level that maybe they could turn into or maybe this is what they can become Mike Brown’s dream or goals for this team are finally being realized they’re hitting their stride at the right time with the playoffs right around the corner hooray

Flop shame on me man shame on all of us that we thought it was different hey maybe you didn’t maybe you’re a pessimist out there going I didn’t believe anything was different I’m not surprised by this loss at all that’s you hey congratulations I’m proud of you I’m

Glad you’re mentally doing better than I am today but I’m I’m I’m frustrated at myself because I I didn’t believe that everything that the Kings have gone through this season all that context all those struggles all those bad patterns and bad habits had been washed away by a

Good five game stretch I’m not naive enough to believe that I I genuinely thought that after last night’s performance the Kings finally doing what they were supposed to do this game out of this three- game stretch the Wizards game is supposed to be the easiest game and I don’t care

That it’s the second night of a back to back I don’t the the the king who played the most minutes last night was Keegan Murray with 31 Fox and sabonis played 28 minutes I don’t give a you know what about the second night of a back toback

Tonight I don’t want to hear any excuses for the Kings I also don’t want to hear Hey give the Washington Wizards credit or give the Kings credit for fighting back from two significant leads and going on two major R runs twice in this game to have a chance hell no that’s

Bare minimum in my expectation like this is this is unexpectable UN unacceptable and unbelievably frustrating to continue to watch this happen and to think foolish of me to think that it’s different that this time it’s going to be different why should we believe it’s going to be different because they keep

Doing those things hey maybe we should go back to the joke that dearn fox made after a king’s win or a king’s loss uh during the home stand which is hey we I know we play up or down to the level of our competition the good news is in the

Playoffs we’re only going to be playing good teams ha like it maybe we should feel that way maybe that truly is who this Kings team is I don’t man I’m I’m angry and I’m frustrated at myself for not expecting this or for for being so blindsided by

This I’m I’m being 100% real with you I was blindsided by this loss I did not expect this loss at all maybe that’s Cockiness and arrogance on my part I did not at all expect this king’s loss tonight I didn’t I’m a Fool shame on me

There but I also there Beyond me there are some things that I’m I’m very unhappy about with the kings in this game particularly their shot selection especially in the fourth quarter the kings were Dreadful shooting the basketball in this game they shot 11 of 39 28% from three-point range they were not

Getting into the paint no paint touches whatsoever in spray threes which is a pillar of Mike Brown’s offense what they were doing so well offensively during this home stand they went completely away from it tonight and even though they were shooting terrible all game long when they finally had a chance to

Come back into it again in the fourth quarter down like only six points with a handful of minutes remaining plenty of time for the Kings to make a run and and find a way to get this win it was just chucking up three after chucking up three now the stats are a little

Misleading here because the Kings actually shot six of 12 from three in the fourth quarter 50% Matt that’s great what’s the problem those numbers are misleading because they don’t tell the story of shot selection they should have gone six of nine or six of eight four five maybe even six of those three-point

Attempts that they took in the fourth quarter were unnecessary were not in the Rhythm or flow of the offense were just lazy one dribble pull ups off of a single screen while everybody else stood around and watched there was way too much herob ball way too much isolation

Way too much settling from the perimeter no attempt at all to get into the paint the Kings only scored 34 points in the paint this entire game on a night where they were shooting terrible from three-point range and de’arra fox who looked like that fourth quarter fo Fox

Was going to have a chance to lead the Kings back he scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter that’s awesome except for the fact that he was heav from three-point range more than anybody else was half of the Kings three-point attempts in the fourth quarter came from

Dear and fox alone now again the stats are misleading because fox went three of six shot 50% from three-point range in the fourth quarter but for the game dear fo Fox shot five of 15 I know dearen has added that three-point shot to his game and I know

Adding that level of of scoring makes him virtually unguardable but this is settling 15 threp pointers for the fastest guard in the league when it is your when it is a pillar of your offense and a goal of your offense to get downhill and touch the paint first

Before taking three-point shots 15 from dearon is unacceptable tonight maybe credit to the the the the the defense of the Washington Wizards I’m not I don’t I don’t want to give anybody credit this is unacceptable this is unacceptable maybe the New York Knicks do that to you okay the

Washington Wizards are able to completely take you out of your game and that’s the thing it didn’t just look like the Wizards defense was giving the Kings fits it didn’t look like the Kings wanted to play their style of basketball they were unraveled they were frustrated and played completely undisciplined they

Wouldn’t have had a chance in this fourth quarter if dearon Fox didn’t hit the shots that he hit just a terrible game for Sacramento overall way too much herob ball and then on the other end of the floor the Washington Wizards had 60 points in the paint and the Kings have

Done significantly a better job at at playing defense in the grand scheme of things the Kings only giving up 109 points isn’t really that big of a deal like that’s they’ve they’ve allowed certainly a lot worse in games so far this season giving up 109 that’s certainly enough for the Kings to win

That game but to give up 60 points in the paint and also 40% 10 of 25 from three-point range Kings just played ugly ugly basketball they had two different runs in this game an 180 run and a 1 15 run two different R runs one in the second quarter one I

Think late third quarter early fourth quarter I don’t remember when it was two massive runs like that and you still lost it took those two massive runs just to get you back into the game and take an Ever So slight lead that you then fumbled away immediately as soon as you

Had it two runs like that just to get back into the game and there was one possession in particular that that speaks to the lack of discipline and lack of focus for the Kings on the offensive end the Kings had a four on five the five

The the the five on four I should say Advantage because on the defensive end the Kings got a stop I think it was Cory kissper or some Wizards player goes down and was slow to give up get up you have a four or five on four advantage and

What did the Kings end up doing all five guys standing on the perimeter they pass the ball around the perimeter a little bit they result or the result is a Chris Duarte contested three-point shot that the kings of course Miss get to the rim you have an advantage somebody’s going to be open

Draw the defense in and get a better look than a Chris Duarte contested three and that’s no disrespect to Chris Chris had a rough shooting night tonight so did most of the Sacramento Kings roster Chris dwarte I thought has been playing actually pretty well for the Kings as of

Late and I didn’t give him the credit that he deserved after the Raptors game because he had some really good minutes in that Raptor game yesterday so this is not an anti-christ thing I’m just talking about that particular possession the Kings have a blatant advantage that they refuse to exploit because they

The time while they game was going on but I’m glad that Morgan Reagan and Chelsea Gray on the Kings postgame show pointed this out and showed the video of Malik monk who’s like dapping his guys up like he normally does very very unenthusiastic high fives as he’s

Walking past the bench clearly on his way to the tunnel somebody I don’t know who like grabbed him to try and stop him and he just kind of frustratingly flailed and basically without saying get off me basically like a get off me type motion and continue to walk into the

Back left the game a little bit early went to the locker room before the game was Final you might have a problem with that you might go this is one of the leaders of the Sacramento Kings and he’s doing this un embarrassing you can’t do that Malik you’re entitled to your

Opinion I’m not saying you’re wrong necessarily I disagree with you I want someone to be pissed off because I’m pissed off and I’ve talked about before and I’ve even defended dear Fox before like dear has been through a lot of Los losing here in Sacramento over his

Career there have been times where that losing has clearly gotten to him and he’s worn that frustration on his face he has not really done that lately I think that is a coping mechanism for him to kind of get through it but I’ve seen it as frustrated some Sacramento Kings

Fans when he’ll make jokes or or he’ll be smiling or he he just doesn’t seem as bothered or upset he even said he answered a question of mine earlier this season as soon as he leaves the arena like that that game is over and done with he doesn’t think about it anymore

That has upset you to some or some of you I should say I understand that like I’m angry I want the Kings to be angry because this you know what keeps happening it keeps happening even when you think you’re a better team even when you’re supposed to be playing better

Even when you’re in a playoff race where you have no wiggle room whatsoever this keeps happening so I want Malik monk to be pissed off I want him to go into that locker room and punch something or throw something within reason don’t hurt anybody and certainly don’t hurt

Yourself and and and don’t go too over the top but I want him to be upset if he needs to scream at some people or some people need to scream at him I’m talking fellow players if the coaches need to have it out with somebody good be angry

Be frustrated that this keeps happening but do something about it right talk is cheap we’ve heard it we’ve done it before at this point I’m a broken freaking record on this podcast how many episodes maybe not this upset but how many episodes this season after losses

Have I been like this here we go again right it keeps happening it’s a pattern do something about it if you’re really angry which you should be good look in the mirror Malik did not play well tonight very few Kings players played well tonight really honestly The only

Positive guy that I have to talk about is kler Edwards and I’ll talk about him in just a second like the Kings did not play well tonight at all it’s another loss that just should not be happening or it shouldn’t be happening at the frequency it’s happening look if the

Kings had lost to Portland the day after Christmas but they beat Charlotte and beat Detroit and then lost this game to Washington we would have been disappointed we would have been frustrated but it’s like okay in reality they’ve had like two bad losses against Bad teams oh the timing is really

Unfortunate because of the playoff race that they’re in but they’re fine right that’s how genuinely that’s how I would have felt but because it’s four losses to four bad teams this season one each month since December that’s what’s got me like this that’s what’s got me pissed

Off and I hope they’re pissed off at the same thing so I have zero issue whatsoever with Malik monk leaving early and being upset could he have been a better leader sure but I don’t know what’s going on in the in in in the locker room I don’t know

What Malik’s saying I have no idea so I’m not going to speculate on that I can only see and and and go off of what my eyes are telling me but I’ve also seen in practice the the the presence that Malik Monk Is Not Just as a force to

Motivate but also kind of a jovial fun presence to to keep things light at times when it needs to be light so I’m not not going to overreact to Malik monk leaving I’m overreacting to a lot of things clearly but that’s not one of them right I’m not going to overreact to

The king or to Malik leaving early because he’s pissed off that he played terrible the Kings played terrible and they just lost to the freaking Washington Wizards who had only won two games out of their last 23 coming into tonight I’m glad you’re angry again do something about it though not just Malik

This king’s Team all of you should be pissed do something about it that’s my only request now I I do want to question or should I say I questioned Mike Brown at two significant or with two significant times in this game like two two Decisions by Mike Brown that I

Questioned that I did not like and I will put my hand up and tell you first and foremost that the first thing I questioned I was dead wrong about the kings were getting punked in the second quarter they were down by 19 points I believe they could not not score at all

Kesler Edwards comes into the game I’m thinking okay like Mike is looking for something he searching for energy he’s searching for someone to give him the energy that the kings are lacking in this game Kesler it’s your opportunity I get it hey Kessler go get me energy but

You’re Str struggling to score the basketball so you bring in a defensive specialist whose major question marks in his game have been on the offensive side of the ball I I tweet it out you can see it I have no problem saying that I did not agree with that decision I was like

Okay you’re struggling to score the ball right now Mike go and get go and find somebody else that maybe gives you a little more offense than Kesler hey dead wrong because as soon as Kessler got into that game game changed right the Kings went on that massive run not

Because of Kesler I think he only finished with like three points or something like that only hit one three-pointer I believe so it’s not because Kessler came in and suddenly lit the lit the world on fire but he played with energy he played with hustle and he

Was a major part of the Kings making their way or getting their way back into the game so much so that coming at of halftime when the kings came out of the gate flat-footed again to start the second half Mike Brown went to Kessler Edwards again immediately now he wasn’t as

Involved in the king’s big comeback in the second half as he was in the first half but I I am happy to tell you I was dead wrong about Kesler Edwards Kesler stayed ready he came in and gave Mike Brown the energy that Mike was asking

For Mike’s going to reward that and I appreciate it even if tactically maybe it’s not the most uh the best decision and that leads into the second problem that I have and this one I don’t think I’m wrong about this one I’m not raising

My hand up on I have a problem with how short of a leash Keon Ellis had tonight Keon has been playing really really good basketball really good basketball tonight he struggled gone into a little bit of foul trouble offensively wasn’t really giving you much defensively was G

Getting beat a few times but I didn’t think he was as bad as Mike Brown’s adjusted rotation suggest he was maybe it was just a circumstance of I need to get Kesler in there I need to replace somebody Keon it’s going to be you because I want Fox and sabonis still to

Be out there Keegan and Harrison Barnes to be out there for length and athleticism maybe that was just the reason and I’m reading too far into it but this is not the first time Mike did it with Malik monk earlier on this season Mike has done it with a handful

Of players this is not the first time this season where I thought Mike has had too short of relash for one guy in particular while still allowing everybody else to kind of Run free and roam free and play poorly I don’t think Keon Ellis deserved to only play 20

Minutes and 51 seconds tonight and he was out for a very long stretch in the second half the Kings didn’t get Keon Ed Ellis back into the game until mid to late fourth quarter when things were starting to unravel and the and the Kings who had brought it back and and T

Taken a slight lead and then the Wizards pulled away again and then he went back to Keon Ellis at that point after Keon had sat for an extended period of time I just think he had a re weird short leash with Keon that Keon didn’t deserve now

If Keon had played more would the Kings have won this game I don’t know probably not based off of how terrible they were playing period the king starters were a complete let down tonight an absolute let down that includes Damonte sabonis who I’m going to talk about here in just

Am I I wear it with pride especially considering the lack of respect that sabonis gets around the league I’m not changing my stance on that but I’m also not going to ignore when damont sabonis doesn’t step up to the plate and doesn’t do his job I thought sabonis tonight was

Not good at all he accomplished his 57th straight 52nd excuse me straight double double hooray I don’t care right he played terribly in this game 14 points six of nine shooting from the field 14 rebounds six assists turn the ball over six times a lot of those turnovers costly turnovers did a

Terrible job of taking care of the basketball that’s like the third or fourth time that he’s had six or more turnovers in a game this season it might honestly be more than that did a terrible job taking care of the basketball it felt like he missed way

More than three shots most of them bunnies at the rim and also sabonis your team is struggling your team is in the pits offensively you can’t get anything going you have only 34 points in the paint why are you only taking nine shots I don’t understand these games from

Domas these are the games that make me understand the critic’s point of view like I’m not expecting domas to take over a game offensively he’s done it from time to time and I understand also domas when he SE dearon Fox going the way that fox was in the fourth quarter

Or he sees Malik monk trying to get things going I understand domas wanting to step out of the way not get in their way and want to try to involve them and set them up and he’s not looking for his own shot I get that respect that and

Admire that about the teammate that dam sabonis is but on a night like tonight where not only can you not hit a shot from the perimeter but you’re not making any sort of presence in the paint and offensively you are a shell of yourself you’re undisciplined and not playing

Your brand of basketball so bonus I need more than nine field goal attempts would it have made a difference again I don’t know maybe he maybe he goes seven of 14 still 50% but I needed more field goal attempts than just nine shots for sabonis here I needed sabonis

And fox to step up more than they did Fox at least was chucking shots and had that big fourth quarter I thought Fox played pretty bad for most of this game as well again it’s not just those two a lot of guys played terribly in this game

But I thought I mean I I need to be straightforward with you damont sabonis did not play well I think a significant portion of this loss was because sabonis didn’t step up to the plate sh whether you want to S call it stat padding or whatever I don’t care he got his double

Double streak that’s great I didn’t want it to end out of spite by any means he’s going to probably catch Kevin Love uh on on on Saturday when the Kings take on the Orlando Magic hooray I hope he does and maybe I’ll be feeling a lot better

By then than I am right now but the double double streak doesn’t matter to me tonight what matters to me is and I think this matters to sabonis more anyway too you lost a basketball game that you should have won your performance was not good enough as one

Of the leaders and stars on this team that’s all that matters to me from this game also we had some bad news started earlier today well before the Kings game started we finally got an official update from the Sacramento Kings on the status of Kevin

Herder we knew that Kevin was out with a dislocated shoulder turns out in addition to that he suffered a laboral terror so the report from the Kings and the release from the Kings mentioned that recovery options or treatment options are being explored which I’m not going to speculate too much what I believe

That to mean is essentially like Kevin and his camper discussing whether or not they’re going to go like the surgery route how much time they will miss if there’s any other routes that they could possibly go if there’s any chance that Kevin could be available for the playoffs or available for the Kings

Before playoff time if he could get back to help this Kings team this season if it’s even worth it for him to do that and potentially re-aggravate the injury or make it worse he’s under contract for the next two years so it’s not like he’s on a contract year and is desperate to

Put up big numbers that a Payday could or that could have an impact on his payday right so all this is being considered all this is being worked out again I’m not going to speculate on how much time Kevin herder is missing my expectation at this point with no

Medical background and no experience whatsoever in this at all my expectation at this point is Kevin herder is not going to be back for the Kings this season I mean a dislocated shoulder is one thing but a laboral tear on top of that is pretty significant and we only

Have three weeks left in this regular season before it’s playoff time maybe he finds a way to come back he’s an absolute Warrior I guarantee you if there’s a way for Kevin to come back if it makes sense for him he’s going to fight to try and do it there’s no way

Anybody should ever be questioning Kevin’s dedication to this team Kevin’s dedication to his teammates and his desire to do everything that he can possibly do to help this king’s team win you cannot question that at all I can tell you that firsthand from my understanding of who Kevin herder is as

A person and a player so that is off the table I am expecting that healthwise he’s not going to be available to go that’s just my read or gut feeling on the situation no idea if that’s right or not so don’t take my word as law right hopefully he comes back hopefully I’m
