Watching uh March benis grinding College offensive line film uh but I am a DieHard Pacer fan and you you know you missed the most important part introducing me uh High School reunion here we got a little bit of high school reunion on the pot I had a I had an

Here today and this is to me one of the most interesting things that happened in their most recent win they beat the Pistons they smoked the Pistons two nights ago uh on one hand they get no credit because the Pistons are awful on the other hand they get a tiny bit of

Tony credit because they’ve lost two crappy teams all season long so congrats they did what they were supposed to do the significantly interesting thing that happened to me in that game is Tyrese Halburn took three threes which is the lowest he’s taken in a game this season

Tied with three other games one was a game they were down 40 in the first half one was a game that he did not play in the first quarter and one was the game he actually got HT in and played 13 and a half minutes AKA in a normal game

Where they actually were planning on playing him the whole time that was the fewest threes he’s taken in a game he’s taken six or fewer threes 27 times this season they’re 12 and 15 in those games uh even worse winning percentage if you cut that down to five Etc uh I think

They’re one game under 500 when he takes four or fewer you get the gist I don’t need to get too grainy with this so the reason this is significant as everybody knows is he’s slumping like crazy he said it himself it’s me versus me all his other numbers look good passing’s

Good twoo percentage is good scoring is generally fine cannot make a three for his life Tyler is it a good idea for this to be what he tries to do going forward should he continue to go one for n but get out of the slump faster or go

One for three and maybe look a little better but then not be as effective of a three-point shooter and lose that part of his game yeah that’s a great question because I think the other night you know watching the Pistons game I I am impressed with his creativity drive to

The basket you know he can get some and1s his mid-range shot is good uh I think what concerns me if he stops taking the threes you know maybe it’s a good short-term fix long-term how is that going to affect spacing you know SE yakum definitely a more efficient

Shooter since he came to Indiana um still believe he’s sub 40% from three miles Turner another guy you can take out of the paint and you know pick and roll shoot threes but just he’s a real streaky three-point shooter and then you don’t really have any true shooting that

Starting lineup you can really trust he’s supposed to be that guy right so I love the idea in theory of him taking fewer threes and driving to the basket more but at the same time it’s kind of like the way you’ve built this team at least this current iteration of it like

He needs to be that guy that’s taking the threes at least in the starting lineup yeah so had he played let’s say a normal air quotes minutes loow in the last game he played 26 minutes because they were blown him out had he played 32 okay he takes four threes instead that’s

Still lower the interesting thing about it that just kind of alluded to is it was in lie of drives because in part of my head I wanted to be like was he just passing more instead were they going through somebody else he was still second on the team in shots like he took

A lefty 20 foot floater like he was still looking for his own shots they just weren’t typically threes so two other one other stat uh when he takes 10 or more threes 14 times they’re 10 and four very good I will say this I mean he’s a smart basketball player duh like

He’s not taking that many unless he’s he’s feeling it right so the nights he takes 10 or more he’s generally hit like four or five of the first 10 so I was going to say that set sounds a lot like running backs in football when it’s like

When they have this many carries they win the football game I’m like I wonder why that is yeah probably because they’re winning by so much they could just run the clock out hand to the running back game um so and there’s probably many other football reasons I

Just probably anyway yeah that there is I think you’re absolutely right about like a lot of the top top three point his top two games in attempts he made over half of you know 16 and 15 attempts like of course they’re gonna win that game right um so anyway that like I do

Think him getting them up on volume can be good right as and it’s funny they played the Pistons last night because this is the perfect time to bring this in as a full circle moment when they played Detroit in Detroit the first time it was their first game out of the End

Season tournament and I remember this game because it was the first time we’ve seen a team guard him like that like the Pistons did that game which was a little more blitzy and Isaiah Stewart was like I am not letting you take a three when I

Switched like he went out so far on these screens and that’s kind of when team started trapping but not really and the Pistons were terrible at the time they were in the middle of their however many losses in a row but they were like we’re willing to let Tyrus Albert beat

Us of their ways we’re not letting him shoot the three they played the Pistons again last night and it was not like that at all they were not up on him like that and Isaiah Stewart didn’t play but he wasn’t the only guy doing it I just

Remember it with him they were not doing that at all and I don’t know if that’s just because sakam is on the team now so like you’re not as willing to just sell out to tyes halber or that the Pistons are a different team or that the Pacers

Are playing differently and have other options in general but like that difference was interesting to me and then he only took three threes and so maybe the fact that they were a little the way they were defending plays into this we’ll see this could just be a one

Game you know number again he’s only done this four times this season three threes but I of the opinion I’m a num guy you are definitely a data guy like keep shooting he’ll get out of the faster that way and like the law of averages forever says eventually they’ll

Go in maybe that’s dumb maybe there is something that’s like actually changed about his game I don’t believe that but maybe that’s the case like I’m of the opinion that espec like especially against these better teams coming up in California he’s got to get up I mean at

Least six or seven right so like keep being guarded the same way attempts are just as important as makes at some point and that’s how you get out of the slump faster it did happened for Buddy heeld even though he slumped again right I think that that is important for Halbert

As well yeah I mean I can totally agree with that granted like I am not a shooting mechanics guy and I’m definitely not a shooting mechanics guy with whatever halbert’s jump shot is but we’ve seen the success and it’s not like it was like a blip as far as his

Three-point shooting efficieny that’s been like the course of his entire career even in Sacramento like good three-point shooter maybe it’s just he’s still trying to get comfortable with the hamstring and getting like his legs fully back under him but again you’re you have more insight information than I

Do I’d like to think I’ve got no idea I I can’t analyze someone’s shot like again I’m a football guy so this just isn’t going to work for me but I have to think that as he gets more comfortable just keep shooting keep shooting it’ll eventually work out and it’ll fix the

Spacing problems because I would much rather have SE yakum closer to the basket I’d much have have wow much rather have Turner you know pick and rolling and driving to the basket instead of always sitting out uh you know behind the three-point line yeah he is more an important space now so like

For heal he that the first game had started for him for me at least in my head was the inseason tournament semi-finals they actually beat the bucks but he missed every three he took that game and then for a month he was like 34% from three and everybody’s like why

Is he playing he’s not defending and like he played bad but for his final month with the Pacers before getting traded he made 40% of his threes and like it didn’t feel that good because of the slump but like that was way better for him and closer to the guy he was for

His career like that happens with Shooters but he had a full month of slumping and like Pacers probably can’t afford a whole month of halberton they’re getting pretty close but yeah uh they would like that to end sooner than that but like that if you have a history

Like you’re going to make them eventually at Le that’s what I believe and you’re right that part two is I don’t I don’t actually know how this would go because there’s only a dozen games left it’s wild to me that we’re at 70 games we talk about that in a second

But you know if if he he is their best shooter like he said that when he was kind of talking about the transition from his old role to his new one he is the best shooter on the team so he does a little bit more off ball stuff with

McConnell or with shakum and if you’re not taking them even if you’re a threat to do a lot of other things Drive score pass whatever if you’re not taking threes like you’re not that you’re not the same guy as an offb player and I wonder if teams would adjust to that one

Game is not g to be enough sample to change the way a defense thinks about his spacing but if it continues to be you know they think it and he thinks it’s going to work out if he only takes five or six or three or whatever then I

Think there would be a change at some point in the way he’s defended maybe that ends up helping him and he makes threes over a softer defense but in the short term they need to win and I think that having spacing for the remaining four players that he’s with is vital so

I’m with you there um we have a million reasons that the the answer is no he should not continue to only take three threes a game even though they just won the game he did it by like 20 points so it helps when you’re playing guys that

I’ve never heard of like from Princeton or whatever in the starting lineup for not wman never heard of him I was like don’t that’s not a real person so here’s why I knew who he was he worked out he had a draft work out with the Pacers

There go for the season but I did forget how to pronounce it because there’s a lot of silent letters in that last name Stanley oody another guy that I’m surprised know who he is hey he started for the Pistons as well and they were destroying the Pacers for six minutes

Where I should start so I was in my head excited to see how are they going to you play nine 10 however many guys in this game the game before that when they played the Cavs they played nine jerus Walker didn’t play mcder wasn’t available I thought that was already

Noteworthy which is why I was on high rotation alert and then they won by so much that like that the minutes don’t work out and the rotation weird and Miles Turner was in foul trouble and lost his contact in the middle of the game and like I can’t tell you anything

About the rotation but what I mentioned earlier is that was game 70 like I was talking to one of the players before the game in the locker room I was like yeah these last 12 games since you’re 7 and blah BL blah he’s like wait we played 70

Games yeah he’s like doing the math in his head he’s like oh wow um like that it feels different at 70 right like when when you when you say a team has 14 15 games left that sounds like a lot when you say a team has played 70 games it

Feels like their season’s almost over and that’s like a two game difference um they played 70 and they they’re half game up on seven and eight like they need to be trying as hard as they freaking can to win every game and they know that this isn’t like rocket science

Or anything but I do wonder if and I I think this is possible that they will be tired with their rotations in especially on this road trip with some good competition in terms of maybe you go you’re willing to go 35 Plus for yakam and halberton as often as you need maybe

You’re willing to go more for n Smith as much as you need because that’s how you win you play your best players more on the other hand their fiveman bench group has been good like they have one of the best benches in the NBA but it’s a bench

Group right so I am curious what you think think of do they go to nine do do they continue to try to see what McDermot can give them do they play jermore like how would you kind of operate in these last dozen games to finish out the season yeah it’s tough I

Think you start need to getting into playoff mode and once the playoffs come around you just naturally just have to tighten that rotation down and then you start thinking about the casualties of that I mean I think about McDermot but the problem is there’s just times I

Don’t think he has played enough to be you know have any cohesion with this group and it shows at times like offense he’s bumping into guys he’s running it he doesn’t exactly know where he’s supposed to be he at a couple weird ones last night for sure yeah but like you

Need that shooting in the playoffs in a team that you know has lost matth for the season has traded buddy healed do you have to lean more on Shepard to do that I mean honestly I’m surprised that Carla was played a rookie as much as he has but I’ve been impressed with Shepard

Too uh other big question I think you have to not play jerus Walker and The Fan brain of me is furious with that I’ve wanted to see more minutes of jarus Walker he flashes a couple times every time he plays but at the same time I just don’t think he has enough

Experience at the NBA level for you to trust him come this playoff stretch and then the other one that I’ve thought long and hard about and maybe it’s just recency bias after last night but I think you have to start thinking about putting Isaiah Jackson over Jaylen Smith

Wow in a fulltime role I love Jaylen Smith I love everything about that man uh I think his three-point shooting this year has just looked better than it did last year and just full disclosure like I’ve gone to 12 15 games this year in person uh I bought them season ticket

Package like I’ve been all in this year it’s been a lot of fun going to the games uh I like the explosiveness that Jackson can provide and I think what’s nice about tightening that rotation and if you put Jackson over Smith I think his biggest problem is getting in foul

Trouble you can just slot him in back for Jaylen Smith and I think that’s where but I just I like the alyo potential I think he provides a spark on defense came away with some nice block sky steals last few games I’ve seen of him uh and it feels like anytime he does

Get significant tick he is filling the stat sheet producing on both sides of the court so that’s my hottest take about tightening the rotation uh it’s no diss toward Jaylen Smith I just I think I need to see something different um because there are some times where I

Feel like it’s a little stagnant but I think everything else the way they’ve been operating makes sense but biggest surprise that we have a rookie talking about Ben Shepard that I just think he should be like a preferred bench guy at this point I would have never guessed

That at the beginning of the Season man if we had this conversation two days ago and you had called that Isaiah Jack shot before last night you’d be looking like I know I love Isaiah Jackson I feel like every time I watch him play he’s just

Doing something fun I was there when he blocked wimy and I was just shook yeah that was sick like I I that’s the only question I had for him after that game I was like how did you like how did you get that high Obie had because Obie had

The one in the same game where he tried to block wemi on the corner three and Obie’s like straight up perfectly vertical wasn’t even close like yeah was and he just Dred the uh okay so couple things to react to one here’s the here’s the Jaylen Smith thing that’s gonna make

This a discussion because to me Jaylen Smith’s been better this season he has earned the right to be the backup five with his play that said he returned from his injury where he missed what like he missed like six out of nine or something like that I don’t remember exactly what

It was right coming in and out of the All-Star break uh he’s played 11 games since he is shooting 28% from three in that stretch and that was what had really like he playing well he’s defending well he’s rebounding well like he’s playing better than last year

Anyway but that was the separator that’s like my you play Jaylen Smith every game he can’t miss now he is missing threes and that’s rounded up a little bit he’s made one in the last three games he’s played he had a couple Duds like right

When he returned at 0 for four in the first one is still his worst shooting game since but if he’s just like a bad three-point shooter and not a good three-point shooter that does change a lot about what he is and then maybe you are if you’re the Pacers excited about

The switchability the athleticism the Speedy stuff that Isaiah Jackson provides I predicted before the season Isaiah Jackson would be the back up five i’ I’ve always liked his game that was wrong Jaylon Smith’s been better uh but I say that to say that for a while I’ve

Been a fan of what he provides and I would understand doing that but I think at this point they’re gonna roll with what they have gone with all they probably will because it’s so late but I I had to get my f I had to get my hot

Tak in as a fan of just like I really likeed yeah we need those um so the to the rotation part I mentioned it’s been 70 games because you nailed it like the playoffs are coming and they probably have a plan for what that’s going to

Look like but like to remind every body you know like TJ McConnell they kicked him out of the rotation last time they in the playoffs he’s a better player now than he was then but you know like if you’re a backend rotation guy that can happen McConnell that will not happen to

This year he’s extremely important to what they do as one of their better ball handlers but like that happens a lot and it’s like with good players not like your 10th guy I’m talking like your ninth and eighth guy can just be totally axed from playing in games in the

Regular season that doesn’t happen right you need all Hands-On deck but if they are going to ramp up naturally more minutes for their Stars which is Ty Albert a guard and Pascal seak a forward then minutes would have to be drained from those two positions so to me the

Big loser would be Doug mcder if they did that he’s 10th guy right now uh you he had the 10 like he could be really valuable for the shooting reasons you talked about but they don’t know a lot of what he can provide they know they

What they can do without him like maybe they just opt to play Nine without him so they can play sakamura or whoever it would not Shock me if they tried to figure out what mcder can give them and like sucked a few minutes like three to

Five for moi toppen he’d still play he should still play like he was very frequently their first sub in the stretch and CA break he’s been really good of late he’s not losing minutes because he’s a good he’s losing minutes because Pascal Alam is better and I

Think that could be a way to get their star forward on the floor more because they their Center rotation is solved right it’s just Turner and whoever his backup is and N Smith isn’t a guy they should be taking minutes from to get seaka more time so maybe if they tweak

The rotation to have more of those seaka at the three lineups they a little bit that could be a way to do it but to me it would be mcder or top in losing minutes for sakam to play more for halberton I think the loser might end up

Being Andrew nard in terms of just I was about to ask what you think like what is the implications to this for n hard because it seems like a weird fit in the starting lineup at times he should still start like he was great defensively last

Night on L of the game yeah and the defense is why he starts but if you’re going to play tymore and you’re not going to you know maybe they would decrease McConnell’s minutes but if they want to keep McConnell about where he is it seems like nard would be the guy to

Lose time they have turned to the nard McConnell pairing more recently though also which is not something they did a lot you know before the last I don’t know I’m making this up like 10 days or so uh so maybe the loser would just be Ben Shepard and they would opt to have

You know M hard B the three and D kind of guy you know he hasn’t been awesome from three this year but he was terrible to start the season has been like high 30% since returning from injury after the inseason tournament so I don’t know

I think it’d be one of those two to not not not playing at all but playing less and then those minutes would be shifted over to Halburn what would you consider how would you think about that maybe it is McConnell and they just sto for the other guys already but he’s they just

Need his ball handling so much with ma out so I don’t know what do you think about how you would shift things if you wanted to get the start more time that that is tough I think I would give n hard fewer minutes I do really

Like the defense but I don’t want to take them away from Shephard on nart I know Shephard just every time I watch him the shooting’s not always there but their nights it’s lights out the defense it feels like he is almost every game I feel like he gets those rookie calls

From refs where it’s just you’re a rookie we’re not going to give you the benefit of the doubt on this foul call but I love the defense that is like the ultimate three and D guy for me and I just think he’s been the biggest surprise to me of the Pacers season I

Want to see that guy get legitimate playoff experience because I think long term if I’m thinking about this team what they can build around that guy is like the my ideal first go Off the Bench kind of guy that can kind of bring that spark yeah he’s been great it like just

It I never saw this coming Nei the only thing I had heard at the draft is when they drafted him I kept yeah I told you he could shoot yeah yeah I heard you shoot but then like on all the broadcasts and podcast I’m Listen to It’s like Pro Scouts loved the

Guy and that’s just everything I kept hearing in multiple outlets and I’m like that’s really weird to talk about a guy from is it Belmont is that where he’s from just like small program and I was like really but then again it’s a late first round pick so I just usually don’t

Think anything of it never would have guessed that he would have been the preferred rookie over Walker yeah he is the defense to me is why he got that time right like I said this a lot I still think I believe this like their best defensive five now hbert

Is not in this lineup and obviously they play him over Ben sheer but their best like we need to get one stop lineup Ben Shepard’s in it right now like as a rookie that’s what it is because even when he wasn’t making threes they were playing him and now he’s making some at

Least uh to a credible level they’ve been like dude shoot we believe in you even if you’re at whatever it was for a long time 21 22% so I want to see a little more of the offensive creativity from him it just looks like he’s just only comfortable with the catch and

Shoot and driving but there’s a really great Drive last night yeah I want to see a little more of it like with the ball in his hands I’m curious about it maybe it’s just that he’s trying to take his time just work on the catch and

Shoot which I’m fine with but you can see the athleticism and there’s enough there that I think he will become a more creative scorer besides just a catch and shoot guy down the road yes I think that’s possible he was their point guard in their garbage time lineup so perhaps

March Madness right now I’ve have gotten one game wrong so far Tyler what do you think I predicted in correctly uh is it the same one I had I had akan winning over kraton oh I did craton’s good I picked uh BYU over Duane no I put Duane but I definitely

Pronounced it as Duan when I put it in there so I should not have doubted a a team that LeBron was going to send sneakers to the day before their game and B TJ McConnell’s one of his two College Programs what was I thinking oh

Wow wow they have not they have not won a tournament game since 1969 I don’t feel that bad for fing they had a guy named DayDay that was just going off really enjoyed that they had some guys getting buckets on that team I think one of the guys was wearing two headbands so

I’m all in on that program now I’m hoping that’s our Cinderella Story we’ll see though I have uh some chances to fall apart right rather quickly looking at some of the current scores um that so this is interesting from a tournament perspective for the Pacers last three

Years they’ve had a lottery pick in the draft so they’re very interested in the N tournament and the best prospects this year their best pick as it stands uh of me talking to you is 37 they are rooting against the Raptors who fall behind Grizzlies uh in the

Tournament the other big is difference from this year to last year in terms of the draft is the top pick let let’s just read them off draft top pick Perth in Australia then the second pick rier in France then Topic in Serbia then some Kentucky guys then an ignite kid then

Another ignite kid and then another french guy it’s a really International heavy draft so this isn’t a good Prospect tournament is where I start my point two is I’ve never been a scout the tournament guy because guys who pop in the tournament end up getting this stupid boost in their draft stock that

They don’t deserve but this year that might actually mean something to me because there’s not that many good college prospects that’s why I need something to right d in my head what are you watching for of anything in the tournament whether that’s a team a player what stands out to you from the

NBA angle of the cinia tournament I’m not a I’m not a huge college basketball guy admittedly I watch March Madness in Indiana and you could tell me that Maris Noel was a first round pick from the tournament last year and I would have believed you don’t care how small he was

Kansas State’s finest hey he’s on a team he got on the Raptor so good I’m a I’m a huge Purdue hater so my only argument now is we need to start officiating Purdue the same way we officiate every single college basketball team I have a lot of Purdue
