Matter the 128 115 loss to the Suns there’s no reason to hang your head hwks no there’s not and um you know with that being said I think sometimes there’s a fine line that you do have to draw you know I I I don’t think that you have to
Treat a loss like a loss um for it to be considered a moral Victory like I think you can have both things like I think you can say I I’m not using this as a moral Victory however I’m also not treating it like it’s a win either um
And I you know sometimes I feel like we we we get put at this point where it has to be one or the other when it doesn’t necessarily have to be and I don’t think that nobody’s treating this like it’s a win um it’s also the hardest game of the
Five on a West Coast road trip and it with it just so happening to be the last game you have to put so much more energy into the one that is the most difficult I think that the way that that was kind of set up did not really help them
Either but listen when you have particularly two categories which I think probably do balance out between each other because you did have 11 steals in this game I think that that does speak some volume to um the defensive intensity that the Hawks um are starting to play with starting to
Take steps I want to say it quietly I want to whisper because I’m afraid if they hear it then all of a sudden the defense will go back to way it was looking previously but um there was also those 11 turnovers as well and so that
Sticks out like a sore thumb and and that has to be um noticed as well but the 21 fast break points um without having somebody like a Trey young who typically gets your um offense started and transition getting up and down the floor deante not as much as one of those
Up and down up and down transition type point guards um I think that that you know kind of spoke some volume as well and then the 44 paint points with with a limited front Court a little bit um I I thought that so there’s some good points
And some good pointers in here as well um but you know when you have when you’re missing players obviously and Phoenix is missing zero players to play that well I got to TI my C my my cap every time and and I heard um Devin Booker landay my plane here heard Devin
Booker uh after the game being interviewed and just talk about like they really gave it all they have like they was they were Scrappy like they just they weren’t going away like they were just they were on it and and he definitely made sure he you know complimented them before really saying
Anything else about anything in his interview I thought that I thought it was pretty spot-on based on what I was thinking when I was watching yeah and normally when Quinn Snider says we didn’t give up we fought hard we stayed in it I’m like it’s I don’t agree with
Him I feel like it’s a little bit of a platitude or attitudes this time I actually agree with them because I had a similar take to yours I said it’s not how you start but how you finish most of the time but I liked how the Hogs
Started and for the most part how they finished because they had no quit in them led by dejonte Murray who uh I I tell you I know he’s not watching stats and he’s not about that life but this is about the third time where I’m like dude
One more board and we get you know or one more dime and we get you a double so 29 Points tenes to nine rebounds on the night was just another DJ getting back to doing DJ things which I appreciated but yeah I actually love the start for
The Hawks the fact that they had 25 points on 12 possessions coming out of the gates they had the Suns on their heels the Hawks looked ready to play and that’s something that I really appreciate because I think far too often on this road trip and even throughout
The season we’ve actually had to say man like wake up why are you getting off to such a slow start when can’t afford to do that against a team like the Suns or really against any team in the league let’s just be honest because if anyone catches fire the way even the sun’s
Caught fire towards the end it’s just something that you can’t afford to have happen but there were a couple things where I actually disagreed slightly like I had the same rationale that you had I had the I agree with your assessment but I actually am okay with the fact that they
Had 11 turnovers because that’s still a low double digigit number right compared to the Suns with their 17 so I kind of like that piece uh for them and I also like the fact that the the Hawks were able to score 23 points off turnover so turn yeah that was positive that was
Really really positive but I love that you called out the steals I mean 11 steals like you are pickpocketing the heck out of the Suns every time they there was an opportunity where they were sloppy with the ball and sloppy with the possession you were there you’re right
There so I like that kind of activity if you will on defense and also I think you called something out that I really liked as well which is points in the paint 44- 32 that’s a good number that’s a good number when you think about how depleted
And of course we’ll talk about the depleted front line yet again but when you think about the depleted Frontline that is currently the Hawks right and you think about the fact that even the Frontline folks that they have it’s like okay DeAndre Hunter had to spring into
Action as a starter which meant you lost that depth of having him come off the bench and actually give them a lift on two-way play and then you think about the fact that Ono oonga was limited another 19 minute night so you really weren’t going to be able to see a lot
From double O and kind of sort of pass them I mean Clint capella had a decent night at 1310 but he only played 25 minutes so when you think about the limitations in the front court and yet they were able to do what they did I think that’s also a
Really I think that’s a positive take way like you said this lockdown Hogs postcast ain’t never been about no lost 30 and 39 on the season for a reason yeah right so we’re not we’re not here to talk about moral victories but we are here to point out some of the
Things that make us happy when we see them happen so when we see you competing on the boards when we see you getting back in transition and being able to take advantage on the break when we see you getting points in because that means that you’re moving you’re keeping that
Ball and assists as well that was the other thing I wanted to point out uh the numbers were about even 27 for the Hawks 28 for the Suns but I appreciate the ball movement oh for sure without question I think that we saw especially in the first half um both teams but more
So down the stretch and just over um throughout the duration of the game from first half to second half which we can’t always say because we know that there’s differences with this team between first and third quarter but I think that they were pretty solid all across the board
In terms of the you know ball security SL um you know just distribution and just facilitating and getting the ball where it needs to go on time in a timely fashion timely manner um and all those things are key because when defenses start closing out on Shooters amongst
Other things like that makes things a little bit you know different more complicated I mean I you know of course I got to credit you know Deon Murray a little bit here and I know that this part is probably easy to do but but um
For the role that he’s kind of had to step in and take over like he’s he’s Beyond more than just a game manager and I don’t like to say game manager like it’s a bad thing because I actually think game manager is a good thing there’s teams who pray and wish that
They had game managers just guys that won’t lose you a game but he’s even beyond that and I think that’s where you have to have you know real really realize how lucky you are and having the value within deante Mar but he’s even like I said going beyond that I mean
Every single night he’s being keyed in on from the opposition for the most part um and to see him being as consistent as he’s been I think has obviously been uh really good for him and this team now in and you know after we come back from the
Break I do have a little bit of a different question that I do want to ask you about giving flowers to somebody but um you know I thought that this team definitely had you know some some decent execution down the stretch um and uh you
Know I think it was a good sign there was some confidence with the team tonight they showed some fight they were counter punching I think that’s very important um they played fearless and they really didn’t care one of the more impressive things to Nature they really
Did not have too much care about the names on the front of the jerseys or on the back of the jerseys they just went out there to play Hawks basketball and it really didn’t give me really because they were fearless and aggressive but it wasn’t a feel that was like oh well well

Whatever but um 22 points maybe not necessarily anything ridiculously crazy in terms of shooting but 5 for 13 from the field 3 for seven from three one of the few one of one one of the very few um you know one of the better very few perimeter Defenders that we have on this
Team and we know that this is a phoenix team that’s when you’re going up against Booker you’re going up against KD and um and um who am I missing I’m sure they have someone else who am I missing oh Bradley Bradley Bradley be I was gonna
Say but he he had a nice game too right right but I’m just saying for everything that DeAndre really had his hands full between him and uh deante yeah and back in the starting lineup can we can we give them some can you get flowers for doing what you’re supposed to do yes
Because you’re doing it in the starting lineup that’s why you get the flowers because you’re literally the walking example the living example of be ready when your number’s called because it’s one thing for your number to be called when you’re on that bench you have a very specific role you fit within the
Com finds and parameters of it and we keep it pushing but when you are a starter knowing how depleted this team is and that you can’t afford to do anything but shine and then you do yeah you get the flowers you absolutely do because like you said when you look at
His numbers and like I I love the three of seven shooting from three like that was powerful uh got four rebounds two of those 11 steals but he was a plus three and it may not seem like a big deal but again as long as we’re not talking about
You being a minus when you’re on the floor that’s a good thing and for a stretch of this game something that you may not see in the box score on his end but maybe if you dig into uh and obviously some of you guys can see us if
You’re watching on YouTube others uh can only hear us but if you were to go to some websites that will actually break down the team stats and show you each quarter and then show you each player and then show you the makes and the misses of those players you’re going to
See the majority of Kevin Durant’s makes excuse me misses in like the first second quarter when DeAndre Hunter was on him that’s where you give him flowers because if you can contain KD for even a modicum of time you have done your job and youve done your job I agree with
That I age that that’s a great call on your part definitely great call yeah I know that um you know I I definitely know that we were you know planning to talk a little bit about something that I feel like we shouldn’t have to have a conver
Ation about uh being uh being jayen Johnson and considering the injury and everything else um we’ll get to him but we got some more positives before we get to him okay let’s do it let’s do it all right so one of the things that you and I really liked we actually chuckled
Because you I was in your head you were in mine in uh pre-production you live in mine for some reason ran free for 4737 90 shooting splits that we saw in that first half were really really good 17 assists six turnovers they the Hawks won the rebounding battle all in the second
Half now let me preface by saying this yes the H the sun slowed them down in the second half but it wasn’t still a bad split in the second half so 40 you go from 47 down to 44 for field goal percentage 37 to 34 for uh
Three-pointers 90 to 79% for free throws that’s probably a part of where lost the game but still not a bad way when you take take on those three splits right and then you still get an additional 10 assist you only get five more turnovers so you pretty much it it was chalk for
Your turnovers and like we said the rebounding battle ended out ended up being even so what are maybe the nuances that you saw in what happened in that second half that maybe ended up costing the hugs this game and like Robert Blackman said they fought hard but kind
Of didn’t have you know that ultim imate answer that they needed they didn’t have enough Firepower I think that’s a great call because you could see that maybe if they had one more guy out there whether that was a full strength Ana oku or even a jayen Johnson period maybe the outcome
Could have been better but maybe what are the nuances in that second half you saw that led to the loss I think it was just really more of some of the some of the miscues from the Hawks I think when we started talking about the 11 turnovers that’s when the bulk of the
Turnover happened um besides that I mean it was it was I think some of it was Talent kicking in um for Phoenix and I know you know obviously this is an excuse but when you’re on the when you’re playing your toughest game on the very last game
Of a road trip um and you you’ve gotten a lot taken out of you and you’re already limited as is I think some of that had something to do with it I don’t think it’s an excuse if it’s true sometimes it’s just true um but uh even
More so you know I think that the talent kicked in a little bit and the Mis qes there was very minimal margin for error for the Hawks to even be able to win this game let alone be able to keep it close and compete the way that they did
Containing guys because we know that that’s all you could do you’re not going to shut down a Devin Booker you’re not going to shut down a Kevin Durant I mean just think about it you’re going into this game talking about Kevin Durant on his career against Atlanta averaging 30
Points s rebounds 51% shooting from the field and 89% from the free throw line by the way in 27 consecutive games having 20 or more you’re not shutting him down that’s just the way that it is but you did a good job in terms of containing and and and dealing with the
Cars that you were dealt um and I think that’s some of the biggest differences behind why little things that turned into big things that they couldn’t afford that’s a great call the little things that started to bite them in the butt and became bigger things as the
Game went on and I think I kind of called this in their favor and the Hawks favor because I guess I was hoping that with three days rest that would allow them to reset themselves from the Lakers game Monday and then I think two I was hoping that with the Suns on a
Back-to-back although two home games albe it but I was hoping that maybe they would come in with a little heavy legs and maybe they did maybe part and parcel of the Hawks being able to get out to such a fast start was because the suns were dragging a little bit early but
Obviously those two things didn’t come together to get the outcome that the Hawks wanted so unfortunately they end the night with the 128 to 115 loss but whoa they have quite the gauntlet that they are going to have to deal with when they come back we’ll download on the

At least you’re not even Midway through the fourth quarter you’re saying hey I need to I need to pull my starters and I need to pull my most valuable just wanted to clarify that point especially for guys like Robert who watch us for every single episode and we want to make
Sure he gets that right information on how to make an assessment of what he thinks if he wants to chime in and same for us that said after uh that game after jayen injured his ankle we were waiting for the results we now know that he indeed
Reinjured that right ankle in that game he of course had missed three games before with that ankle then he returned for three games now he’s out again is and is expected to miss at least the next three so I’m gonna ask you again DeShaun is it time to consider shutting
JJ down for the regular season because at the end of the day you can’t get up out of the 10th spot into the ninth spot or the 11th spot for the play in you are where you are um it’s such a it’s such a tough answer
I know people are like just say it already like it could only be one or the other and I know that that’s really hard for me to do and I’m going to tell you why because it’s like the obvious thing to do is the answer is yes like every
That’s that’s a given right um but sometimes I do think there are instances where um you can hurt yourself by not playing I think we talked about this when we were on our um on the Atlanta Basketball party earlier in the week yeah sometimes I think that that’s like
A real thing by trying to reserve people for so long like the best way to stay healthy is to keep playing and I know that sounds really weird but that is a real thing in this situation that may not necessarily apply as much because there’s already an existing injury so you’re making it
Worse by putting them out there on the floor I think this is ultimately why you you know pay some of those medical staff and doctors and everything else and what have you um but I’m not mad if the decision ultimately I guess the I’m not mad if the decision was to play him
Sparingly limit the minutes where you decide to play them how long when against who all of those things if it’s against one of the more physical teams in the NBA that’s trying to play for some you know whatever the case may be trying to make a statement or whatever
I’m probably not playing them for nearly as long I’m not willing to take that chance yeah and I think that might be the compromise that might actually be a good compromise and Willie Carr as well hey Willie says they need to shut jayen Johnson down to get him ready for the
Playing tournament I agree willly like I see absolutely no reason to bring him back at all that’s just me uh uh three games sitting for the next seven we’ll be okay and Robert says JJ will be rusty coming back for the play in I mean Robert you make a great point but that’s
What shootarounds are for you can you can find ways to keep him active and keep him healthy and kind of engaged and you know ma says this was a winnable game it was and I think that was the disappointment for us because it definitely was a winnable not that we’re
Mad about it because normally I’d be going off when they lose some game that they could win but not this one this one had everything it was supposed to have for them to win just kind of like fell short towards the end I want to say this one last thing before we’re probably
Going to end up previewing the next game but in some ways after thinking about it tanicha in some ways this kind of felt like it was a longer road trip than it was I’m trying to figure out why that is but the same L as always is right but I
Think part of the reason behind why that was is because there was that little stint at home between this and being in New York for extended time they were in New York and stayed in New York for like a week they might have played only two games in New Yorker or I
Think three because of you know the Knicks or whatever two Nets and Knicks but they stayed out there for a whole week so that’s probably why I was thinking like it feels like it’s been forever like longer than just the five games but that’s probably why because
They spent extensive time maybe so maybe so but yeah yeah know that same old two we trip to the West Coast just and like we wanted it to well it ended like DeShaun called it though guys cuz he said one and four I was the one out here
Talking about two and three three and two then I was getting all big excited like maybe it’ll be four in one okay I was just in my happy place but anyway another place that makes us happy is when the Hogs come back home because those guys deserve to get off the road
Deshaan you made an excellent point they were in the tri state New York New Jersey Connecticut for those who don’t know which Tri State I’m referring to but they were in the tri state for a week they come home for a game and then they’ve got a swing to the West Coast
And that’s a lot so DeShaun I’ll ask you this we will talk about the gauntlet of the schedule as we build through it but they are coming back home for a five game stretch tough one they’ve got the Hornets to start Celtics Blazers Celtics bucks that’s a lot but that said how do
They get off to a good start with this Hornets team come Saturday night this is going to sound like really bad radio or podcast etiquette or whatever you want to call it but forget about I mean yes you obviously got to do all those little things and whatever what have you but
Let’s throw that all out the window for a second and just put that aside let’s put that in the waist basket I just need I just need the win this has been a Hornets team that has been a thorn in the side of the Hawks don’t forget we’ll
Go back to last year where they played them four times and the Hawks walked away with I think one win one win also started the season this year and lost to the Hornets as well since that has happened I don’t know the Hawks could have racked up multiple victories
Against the Hornets but I wouldn’t know it because I’m still thinking about the thorn in the side I know the Hawks have not made the statement against the Hornets that I feel like they have had to make and I would like to see that happen just when you can win by one you
Can win by 100 win the damn game yeah if I remember correctly when they and no they have not beat beaten the Hornets yet this season and they played them early so you know you might say to yourself who knows this is the opening game of the season so maybe you know
This game isn’t Charlotte and maybe that’s why the Hornets were able to win so you just kind of one off it right but then you know when you give the Charlotte Hornets their 13th win of the season that’s when I have a problem so there and and this 13th win came on
Valentine’s Day so that means you had gotten through the mythical half point of the season for the most part and this team had only won 12 12 games and you give them game number 13 boy bye so yeah I need the HW to win this game because
Like you said for me it’s a pride thing you’re you’re better than them and I know sometimes people may think oh you say that because you cover them no they seriously are better than them they need a dub when they come back home so that they can start this Gauntlet on the

In arguably the toughest game of the west coast road trip, the Atlanta Hawks were more than competitive… in fact, we saw a level of fight, confidence, fearlessness and counterpunches, ultimately resulting in a 128-115 score-blinding loss to arguably the best starting five and talent-loaded rosters in the NBA.
One would be very hard-pressed to find anyone that believes Atlanta should hang their heads after a within reach, yet disappointing loss.
