Burks

I’ve been on the “we give talk about Burks too much” train, since he’s basically just our 9th man, but this part from The Athletic article is just nuts:

“When the Knicks acquired Burks and Bojan Bogdanović from the Detroit Pistons, it seemed they found at least one. Burks, especially, was supposed to run the second unit. His presence would bounce McBride, an up-and-comer still learning how to run an offense, from the rotation come playoff time. But as the season nears its end, McBride is in the starting lineup, playing the best ball of his life and reasonable hopes for Burks have crumbled. After a month and a half with the Knicks, Burks’ percentages are too low for limbo. And yet, the largest issue isn’t even his inability to make a shot. The Knicks had one expectation for Burks: hold up the offense in the non-Brunson minutes. Somehow, it has veered the opposite way. [The ball sticks with Burks. He’s in the 97th percentile in usage since coming to New York, yet only the second percentile in efficiency, according to Cleaning the Glass. The hole is too deep for the rest of the group to climb to ground level](https://theathletic.com/5364934/2024/03/25/knicks-offense-no-jalen-brunson/?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=nbatw&source=nbatw). The Knicks have played 316 possessions with Burks on the court and Brunson off it this season, per Cleaning the Glass. They are averaging a mere 97.8 points per 100 possessions during that time. That is in the zeroth percentile amongst NBA lineups.”

Regardless of if his talent level has dropped, I don’t get why he’s playing like this. He gets the ball and takes a bad shot every time.

Yeah I mean, the logic behind the trade made sense. McBride hadn’t fully established himself, and Randle was out with injury. So bringing in a forward averaging an efficient 20 ppg and a scorer at SG made sense on paper.

The problem is the game isn’t played on paper. Bojan and Burks just choked, and made themselves basically unplayable. In hindsight, it’s just a bad trade. The good news is neither player will be here for very long.

People need to lay off these dumb ass analytics. Burks is here to be a bench guy once Randle, OG and Mitch returns. He’s a specialist needed only in a limited role.

Whether you guys want to understand this or not, Deuce is NOT a pg. He’s thriving as a shooting guard playing off the ball. The role of secondary ball-handler off the bench will go to anyone other than Deuce. Deuce is similar to IQ: you stick a ferocious defender on Deuce while he’s dribbling and he’s going nowhere but side to side. He won’t be able to turn the corner and initiate offense. That’s a problem come playoff time.

That’s why Burks will be on the floor in the playoffs in the event matchups require his dribble skills.

All these dumb ass analytics mean NOTHING come playoff time.

  3. Burks has always been a bad shot taker. Difference is now, he’s missing the vast majority of them along with the open ones too.

he stinks and he is not the answer off the bench, im kinda hoping we keep a draft pick this year for a wing who can create some offense like Kevin McCullar.

We get it. He’s struggled. Hopefully everyone gets healthy and he doesn’t need to play. Just be happy that Mcbride has emerged as a legit backup guard. We don’t have to constantly pick a guy every season to shit all over. This season has been so much fun. Enjoy it

Burks has been showing some sign of getting it together, and we know he can be successful under Thibs system. Bojan though has been getting worse every game

They’re both just mentally shot after coming to such an intense environment from playing summer camp ball all year in Detroit. I think they’ll be better with less minutes and less pressure once the injuries clear up, that being said, neither should really play much unless something has gone wrong.

  7. Low risk trade. We only gave up a benchwarmer and a scrub. And as a result, Deuce has flourished

  8. There has to be a point where he does better, imho might be too late as others are coming back and his role will diminish.

He was meant to come and give the bench a jolt, but that has failed.

I am not too mad because he was not meant to be our savior, we also got rid of who we had to. Burks is FA after the season, Bojan’s contract can be used in a trade. End of story I guess

Anyone who has been watching can tell this dude is playing some of the worse basketball you can imagine…

This just proves it. Zero percentile? What?

And we’re not complaining just to complain.

This dude will cost us games. He not only takes a half dozen bad shots per game (in limited minutes) he has no idea what he’s even *supposed to be* doing.

Thank god for Deuce is all I am going to say. I don’t blame Leon, he makes this move 10/10 times because it made sense at the time with the information he had, but it just hasn’t worked out.

As for the other dude, prop his old ass up in a corner and let him take those shots. Bogy hasn’t been much better but he’s still somewhat more under control and has a *slightly* higher bball IQ.

We all know these dudes are getting more minutes than they should but Burks was actually supposed to get serious work as the second unit ball handler.

I would have preferred Malachai Flynn but whatever. Deuce is the guy.

Cmon yall we better than this

Focusing on a player who isn’t great when we’re having a great season is some hater shit

    Relax with that energy

He thinks he’s jordan or something with his shot selection lmao. If he would just shoot when he’s open from 3 but otherwise just pass and move he’d be a usable player. With the way he’s playing, I’m hoping he never sees the court in the playoffs

  12. IF they can get healthy I suspect we won’t see much, if any, of Burks. I feel like Thibs has seen what we all see and is playing him out of necessity right now. He is only averaging about 13 minutes a game over the last 15 games.
