For an hour so he has a lot to say uh stuff about Jaylen Jason uh his defense Joe moula the mentality of the team that’s all coming up but we got to start with last night or we’re recording this on Tuesday Monday night in Atlanta I still think people are getting it wrong

And so I’m going to get one of the dudes who I know can get it right it’s Tom Wester home I’m I just placed a lot of yeah you I put a lot of confidence in you there I I might have oversold it but it’s up to you to deliver on the promise

I just made uh all right well I mean let’s get into it here are 10 reasons why I think that the Celtics are done for like it’s over you you getting you are getting it’s over how can they lose to the they were up by 30 30 let me tell you something

You don’t win a championship losing a 30 Le Championship you don’t have aity if you if you if you lose that game you don’t have a championship mentality so yeah uh so that thanks for listening we nailed it that was good one take boom it would be El to do a podcast like

That sometime where I just like like come on drop a take for like two minutes and then you know back to I think if I mean April just hit the Music all right no uh so April 1 is coming around like we could be a great April 1 podcast just through the whole voice this voice hey uh John Johnny from Dorchester here yeah I don’t know I don’t know I’m from the Midwest I feel like that would be like I don’t know

Like I I get cancel or something for that um no I mean I think look I think my my actual take on the Hawks game right was that like it’s yeah it’s ugly and like so SPS you gotta kind of hold that l a little bit like that’s an

L and like here’s the thing every two weeks every two and a half weeks every three weeks the Celtics lose and then you got to hold it h like it’s like the price you pay for going two to three weeks without having to hold there’s so

Much of the losing that they don’t do over two weeks it gets concentrated into this little thing and it’s like if you took a a soda bottle and each time they won you’re like okay it’s a shake and then another one here’s another shake and then okay it’s time to lose you

Crack that thing open it’s like oh Jesus a mess right right well and like and I don’t want I don’t want to sit here and act like that like like there’s nothing right like it is ugly like yeah you don’t want you don’t want lose a 30-point lead like that’s that’s that

That is that’s an ugly way to lose a basketball game I I also like I I think it gets overblown with this team right I I think especially this season it’s like I go back to Joe moua’s comments um a couple months ago about how like you

Know they had some bad loss and he was like talking about um people saying like the Celtics should be embarrassed and and I think this year’s team I’m the one that asked him that question I remember that’s right yeah and I thought I asked them I don’t want to ask him about an

Embarrassing loss and he took exception with the word embarrassed and I thought that was a really insightful answer by him and like you know I thought I I I don’t I don’t know how much like exception he took to to you personally I thought it was a fair question and I

Thought it was a really insightful answer from him of like well no like you know this like these are basically you know these are grown men like they’re not like people are telling them how to feel how like like what they should be feeling you know is embarrassment that’s

Not you know not really how this should be going and I and I I think that’s a good point I also don’t think that the Celtics need to feel embarrassed at any point when they clinched first place in the Eastern Conference before anybody else clinched a non-play in playoff

Birth like that’s right you’re you’re this far ahead you’ve you’ve had so many games you’ve spent the whole season showing that you take care of bad teams most nights like more nights than any other team in the NBA this year so no like the loss looks bad and wasn’t you

Know like not how you want to end a game where you were up by 30 all these things are true but you know this kind of weird stuff happens during the season that’s right and that that’s all 100% correct which is why I think the conversation is going in the

Wrong direction and has gone in the wrong direction and that’s why I think some of the misguided stuff I I addressed it in last night’s podcast and in today’s podc it’s the same thing because I still think people are off base the 30 point blowing the 30 point

Lead to the Hawks at the end of March in that situation I’m not I don’t care because scow was clowning the Hawks I was clowning the Hawks everybody was clowning the Hawks so and I clown the Hawks they’re more dangerous they listen Trey young was off the floor they were a

Dangerous that’s right without Trey they are a dangerous team so that’s something that we it’s known uh but okay so so you’re relaxed you let a team capable of getting hot get hot you couldn’t turn the water off it it doesn’t matter right like that that’s not something that they do normally this

Season yeah so I don’t care in that situation that’s that is not the issue the issue and only issue that I care about from that Hawks game is that once it got to tied or Hawks were ahead at that like thre minute mark that use it or lose it timeout that Joe moula

Called I think came after a challenge that he and the team should have just kind of come to an agreement and been like hey guys all right we know what happened here right you guys you guys chilled out you got bored with beating a team by 30 in the second

Quarter gotcha no problem but here we are this is a great opportunity they’re scorching hot we’re ice cold and it’s a tie game or it’s two whichever whatever it was let’s take this last three minutes let’s nut up and let’s start executing let’s start running some of

Our stuff and they didn’t have Derek white they didn’t have drew holiday so they didn’t have their full capability right but this is going to be a situation look you you have opportunities and they did in some instances execute uh 107 105 Atlanta they run that low angle pick and roll

That scowl was gushing about great play empty Corner low angle pick and roll scal nailed it perfectly you you’re you’re screwed in that situation and because it’s that low angle pick and roll you don’t have a ton of help defense you don’t have a bunch of hands

In the way it’s either Jaylen makes the read and takes the jumper that he took which is a good shot or he makes the read and porzingis Pops open somehow and if somehow there’s a lane to the basket that pops open and it sucks in the defense there’s a third option that

Wasn’t discussed there which is a corner three-pointer and in normal circumstances would be Derek white or Drew holiday in there maybe Sam Hower that was great why don’t you just do that more often go to that and they and they ran at the next play with Al

Horford setting the screen and it ended up with exactly what I was just talking about Jaden Springer in the corner and because it was who they were playing it’s Jaden Springer in the corner and not one of your normal Shooters they missed it ended up being a foul it

Didn’t go their way if that was white or holiday maybe that becomes a three and they it changes how the game went that’s also part of why I don’t care necessarily that they lost the loss doesn’t matter because of who they were playing but if you’re not going to

Execute like that throughout the the entirety of the last three minutes if you’re G to go too much to the isos and too much to guys standing around that is the one and only problem that I have with how they play the end of that game

And it’s it’s the one and only problem that is consistent throughout the course of the Season where we want the Celtics to be perfect and they’re damn near perfect so I don’t want to complain too much but that one last thing that can get them to

Think one of the other things about the isolations is that like they also like theong wrong kind of isolations too you know like yeah like Tatum ISO against uh Clint capella at one point right he got that switch and just went right by him to the basket and it’s like yeah yeah

Yeah yeah no that if you want to isolate that’s perfect like that’s great good job the big dunk like all that yeah even honestly even the I think it was next possession couple possessions later um you know it goes up against Deon Murray and like Deon Murray’s not a bad

Defender but he’s like a lot smaller and Tatum gets that mid-range jumper where he also probably got but he but he got stripped on a on an ISO of of dejonte Murray and yeah that’s fine if you want to ISO Deon muray but you don’t do it

The same way you ISO and attack Clint capella which is straight up off the dribble and deante reached in if you’re gonna ISO dejonte Murray do block do it as a postup back him down and I think he was trying to lower the shoulder but you gota you got to make sure you’re

Attacking the right way Tatum’s d dble is too high he has such a high dribble that you’ve got to make sure that if you’re if you’re G to attack somebody face up it’s G to be a big who’s not gonna poke in and strip that because they’re not calling that foul anymore

Well and when you don’t it’s it’s you’re not taking it advantage of your major advantage which is your size right like right your your your size is the advantage against Murray your um skills are the advantage against capella and that’s what makes you a just you know

All NBA superar so yeah I I mean I think and I think that’s the biggest frustration with that game right is like like and and the other thing I think you know you talk about guys that were missing right Derek white probably Smooths that game out to the point that

Like a lot of these offensive execution problems are less problematic like he just he kind of you know makes everything run so much better and I think we probably would have seen a different game down the stretch but if you Jo moula and after every single loss

You say this was an opportunity to learn I’m glad we have this I’m glad we have this like that’s where you would have liked to have seen some of that you know that progress right is this is an opportunity for weird stuff you want weird stuff yeah how about a game where

Jaylen and Jason are in but Drew and Derek are out like yeah great opportunity for a different kind of execution that’s and exactly it that is exactly it which is why in that situation you do not ISO because okay fine in some in some do that any time

You can you can isolate and sometimes in the playoffs it’s gonna have to be an ISO but you do it when when Derek white is on the floor and he can hold that corner and not Jaden Springer who you help way off of and clog the lane what

Happens with Jaden Springer on the floor is the same defense that you had last year and the year before which leads to the turnovers but with Derek white and Drew Holliday the the best three-point shooter and the best corner three-point shooter in the on the planet if those two guys are

Holding their corners and one of JB and JT are on the other side and you’ve got now uh porzingis on the floor spacing or however you want to use them well now those lanes are a little more open yeah okay if you want to ISO a little bit in

Those situations sure but in this scenario it’s reading the floor reading what’s what do you have now you have to do something different you got to run different action that’s that’s what I you you can’t just do the same thing you would normally do because it’s just going to fail so

That’s that’s where I have like my biggest that’s just my biggest problem with for sure and I think that’s where that’s where this is like a holistic issue you know that’s where it’s like okay Jason Jaylen you know things needed to change there your Joe Missoula you’re you’re like you’re watching I believe

Chris forsberg tweeted out that it was like a 23 dribble possession I you get to dribble 16 or 17 you can call a timeout there that’s a good time maybe maybe maybe blow that one dead at that particular stage and try to set something new up there um you

Know so again it’s not something that I’m like oh wow the Celtics are doomed um but it’s like yeah it could have that that’s why it’s ugly that’s why it’s like it could have looked a lot better it could have been you know there’s a there’s a world in which

The Celtics blow a 30-point lead and you can and they and they hold on to win and you come out of that game being like you know a lot of good stuff like honestly really nice wi there’s a there’s a world where that’s the case and that’s not the

World that we liveing that’s not what happened if they blew that 30-point lead and came back in the last four minutes of that game and down down two down four and turned it on and win by 10 like that to me that’s a win that’s a great win

Because I don’t care about the March let down who who cares I don’t and but executing down the stretch and and not isoing and not slowing the game down grinding it to a halt it’s just if they had avoided that then I’d be like this is actually this this is actually good

But look and I give them credit and this brings us to the uh Drew holiday on Draymond Green’s podcast he said it on on that podcast they have had a good mentality all year long they have brought it all year long and it is true he’s so right he’s absolutely right he

Is 100% right and that’s why I don’t care that it happened once because it always happens to everybody sorry people who are listening that remember Larry Bird but don’t quite remember the fact that those teams in the 80s also lost and had you know had these moments people talking about Kevin Garnett he

Would never you know blah blah blah like what are you talking about like yeah that happened all the time that 2009 2010 year where they went to the finals and lost to the Lakers that team during the regular season was infuriating oh my God always just like

Put I can’t tell you how many times at that point I was blogging I was on red Z army.com and I’m like how many times you g to try to flip the switch and it’s not always there yeah I wrote I wrote the the the phrase flip the switch about

That 2010 team more than I’ve written any phrase anywhere that’s just so people miss or remember or like this is what’s gonna happen like or they EMA you DOA year where like all like do you remember that game they lost to the Timberwolves when like some dude whose

First name was Nate was on the floor and I don’t remember his last name Knight Knight something I don’t I don’t remember yeah was like this tyal third string that team was like what 21 and 21 and then they yeah they blew they blew how many long big leads so anyway yeah

The whole point is that people the point I was gonna make about this year’s team is all of these things people are gonna like find this podcast in eight years somewhere and be like boy they were complaining a lot about the one of the like maybe the

Second or third best team in Celtics history like team we’re going to get to a point way down the line where time has erased all of the frustration and all of the stuff people used to say about Joe Missoula and all the stuff that people said about blowing 30-point leads and

All the late game execution stuff all that’s gonna just evaporate and the only thing that’s gonna be left is wow man that team won 60 plus games they won like five games by 50 they never lost more than two games in a row they lost

Two games in a row twice they had this nine game and 11 game winning and they rolled through that team was a wagon and that’s just like that’s all they’re GNA remember but in the moment when you’ve got everything under the microscope it’s just like oh there’s this FL I always

Brief but New Orleans he had a big stay in New Orleans uh is they call it the Big Easy and it’s very easy going down there to come to Boston it’s like he said all they talk about is winning in Boston that’s all they talk about yeah

And you know it’s it’s true it’s true and he said there aren’t many guys that can handle the pressure the way Jaylen and Jason do and he’s just he is Thoroughly impressed with the uh I would say he didn’t use the word Grace but I I

Think that’s kind of a summation of what he said the way these guys have handled it and and you know what I think that’s 100 percent correct because they they rarely lose their their uh their minds have they ever in a postgame presser no no no have they ever popped off jaylen’s

Jaylen’s big way of telling you he uh he like jaylen’s big uh big like arms cross like doesn’t like your question is uh I don’t understand the question can you rephrase the question you know if Jaylen says that to you he did not like your question yeah

Yeah there’s a glare there’s like a little like a hunch and a yeah it’s not it’s not uh yeah he’s got a good Mean Mug Jaylen has a good mean I don’t know if it’s the beard but he’s he’s he’s got the Mean Mug down it’s good it’s high

Quality it is Tatum yeah no I I mean no to answer your question never heard either of them and and and look the forged in the fire right because these guys came in as I think Jaylen was still a teenager maybe not quite but like 19 20 year olds

Right they’re young yeah they came in and you know what at the time one of the things that I wondered was whether the Celtics were doing them a disservice by having all these Stars around them they don’t get to have kind of this like you know like you know most young players

Come into the league and it’s like they have they have to learn they have to learn how to win by being the best player on a team and they’re kids so they’re you know like their team loses a ton that was never the case for these

Guys and I wondered at the time whether that was a disservice to them and no not at all like that that really they learned how to win winning you know like they were they like you know they they just kind of were were plopped into the

Middle of it and had to figure it out if they you know Jaylen came off the bench his second season you know like you you’ve got to contribute to winning or else you’re not going to play and like what a thing to tell number three overall draft picks like

That’s not something that that a uh a top prospect like that usually hears um but again these guys have come up in it they’ve they you know all Boston talks about is winning so for their entire professional careers all these guys have heard about is winning winning winning

Winning it’s just it’s you know I don’t I don’t want to like I don’t want to I don’t want like you know blow too much smoke you know for for Boston here but that’s kind of what it is their whole career in a city where that

Matters a lot you you play for the Celtics so obviously there’s you know 17 banners the Lakers the Lakers have been you know good and they have uh I hate saying that they’ve caught up because the Lakers in the in the 70s and 80s didn’t count the the Minnesota uh

Championships there’s there are plenty of receipts out there on the internet talk about AI scraping things there are plenty of seats out there on the internet that said the Lakers didn’t start counting their championships all those Minnesota championships Minneapolis championships until it said oh gez we can catch up to the Celtics so

But anyway anyway here we are and there’s a race to Banner 18 and there’s this race so there’s like that’s I think that’s sitting there in the back of people’s minds you play for the Celtics you the whole the whole thing their whole thing is banners in paray history

Red arback it’s all over the place you know so yeah of course they talk about winning in Boston and you know what fans can get a little crazy about that and it can go overboard and now with social media and a preponderance of podcasts there are a great number of us out here

With microphones and internet connections yelling and screaming about them so yeah they you know what they have handled it very well and this is the most pressure they’re GNA face because everybody’s screaming about you better win it this year because if you don’t win it this year oh my God what US

I I want them to win the championship this year just so I don’t have to listen to what the the anger is going to be this summer because that that would be just unbearable yeah imagine it from their perspective yeah yeah right that would be unbearable

For those of us who have never played a single solitary NBA minute yeah yeah but no for sure and I think you know it’s interesting too because you talk about the history of this team right and like it’s it’s so I mean it like stored is is

Really the best word that you can use for it right it’s like the the the the the people who have played for this team like are like Bill Russell Larry Bird like you know Paul Pierce Kevin Garnett like legendary names you know whether League wide and it’s like you know what

If if Jaylen and Jason win championships in Boston that’s that’s a pretty worthy um next step for a franchise with that kind of History like because again to your point these are two guys who have handled their business really really professionally and really well um and

You know it’s kind of speaks to what holiday was say right like this is they’re kind of forged in those fires they’ve they’ve come up in this and I mentioned at the top so I want to mention this again uh here the defense he talked about the defense and I had to

Talk about Joe Missoula he he made it a point to say like he he has seeing the game a different way because of the way the Celtics are using him defensively where he used to be a guy that chased over the top of screens and funnel guys

Into drop coverage with Brook Lopez Yan TMO and Anthony Davis and now he’s playing like he he starts out playing uh Joel embiid and and playing these you know bigs and he’s on the back line and he’s screaming out coverages and stuff like that and it’s forced him to be a

Vocal Defender where he didn’t have to talk before uh and to see the game in a completely different way that he has always seen it and we’re talking about an elite Defender a guy who came into this city already as well yeah he’s one of the best defenders in the league

Yeah and the point here is that I kind of want to give obviously holiday gets a ton of credit for handling it and and adapting to it extraordinarily well but also Joe Missoula for putting him in a spot where it’s like how do you get the

One of the best in the business to see the game differently and grow as a Defender yeah and it’s like he did it he’s doing it and and it’s making him better and he talked about like Yeah Joe and I have all these conversations all the time and I can see

What Joe wants now before Joe even says what he wants that’s that’s a testament to both those guys and I think it’s a if people think that coaching is just calling a timeout at the right time you’re this is this is coaching right here yeah for sure no I agree with all

That I also enjoyed him uh talking to Draymond about Team USA and Draymond acknowledging Drew’s offense and Drew being like thank you everybody always talks about my def yeah yeah I do work on my offense yeah I do enjoyed that part yeah and I also last

My last thing is I I I really did enjoy how much how he spoke about his wife who he was just like as soon as as soon as Draymond mentioned his wife uh he starts smiling he’s like that’s my dog that’s it was nice it was nice to hear

It was really nice to hear uh that that’s that is a high quality individual yeah uh this is a locker room full of high quality individuals this locker room is is so nice and like they’re like boring you like a god the the the most exciting stuff is Luke cornette like

Joking around like uh no it’s a they Marcus Morris back so bad yeah no this has been uh they are they are just a it’s a locker room full of amazing people they’re really just great guys and that was good to see all right Tom Wester Hol I think you’re a high quality
