The reasons why this was the most frustrating loss for the New Orleans Pelicans so far this season

After battling back the Pelicans fall to the Oklahoma City Thunder and here’s the thing this might be their most frustrating loss of the Season I’ll tell you the many reasons why in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans let’s Go you are locked on Pelicans your daily New Orleans Pelicans podcast part of the locked on podcast netor work your team every day welcome to another edition of locked on Pelicans the daily podcast covering your favorite team the New Orleans Pelicans in NBA part of the locked on

Podcast Network your team every day available wherever you get your podcast and available on YouTube I’m your host Pelicans Insider credential member of the media Jake Madison at NOA Jake on Twitter here with y’all on this Wednesday day after the Pelicans lose 11912 to the Oklahoma City Thunder I bet

You’re frustrated cuz I’m frustrated with that game we’re going to break down the reasons why and the things the Pelicans need to change I want to look at a myriad of reasons of why this game frustrated me probably frustrated you as a fan as well I want to specifically

Look at CJ McCollum and Zion Williamson in the fourth quarter in the disparity between the two there then I want to get into a discussion around the center position in this game because spoiler alert I don’t think yonas valunas was the answer I’ll explain why in the third

Segment and and of course thank you for making lockdown Pelicans your first listen today and every day we’re here Monday through Friday the number one Pelicans podcast breaking down everything you want to know part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day subscribe wherever you get your

Podcast join almost 10,000 Pelicans fans on YouTube is it’s going to be an interesting end of the season for New Orleans and look they’re going to be in the postseason we don’t need to worry about that we’re going to cover it all here we’re going to have some bonus

Stuff this week as well I’m excited I hope you’re excited too and of course become an every day two Works listen Monday through Friday if you’re an everyday and I talk to a bunch of y’all at the arena for this game the start of a six-game homeand let me know in the

Comments down below so this game of all of the games I think was the most frustrating game of the season for the New Orleans Pelicans we’ll get more into CJ and the offense and the the center position at this game but this game was frustrating because they came back took

A lead and then blew it and it feels like all of that work was for nothing OKC was up 20 20 New Orleans fought back Midway through the third going into the fourth quarter and could have and should have won this game but they didn’t right

They’re now 0 and 17 0 and 18 I forget which number it is when tra um when they Trail going into the fourth quarter you’ve got to eventually figure this out and they haven’t it was frustrating because they could have won this game had they just gotten a single defensive

Rebound late in the fourth they’d have been up five with the ball instead they found themselves down three a moment later it was frustrating because the refs weren’t great and Bill Kennedy the ref in charge particularly of the replay stuff freaking loves the spotlight eats it up and it’s just annoying like it’s

Not funny when you’re waiting on a call that’s important in a game the show shouldn’t be about the refs some of those moments can be cheeky and fun but not when you always do it and it just gets infuriating when it’s like just tell us what the is I actually don’t

Think the refs were that bad they missed a carry in late in the fourth quarter there I don’t I think the the reviews were the actually the right calls I don’t think that was a smart challenge by the Pelicans in this one because what were that was supposed to be overturned

On I thought it was an offensive foul on Zion Williamson it’s just annoying when Bill Kennedy does that when it just should be a simple thing they got the calls correct didn’t overturn one overturn the other and you move on and it drags it out and it just pisses us

Off right but what’s more frustrating about that cuz again I don’t think the rest were that bad overall New Orleans took nine 10 more free throws than the Oklahoma City Thunder did what’s frustrating is the Pelicans let it get to them in the first half they they lost

Their composure not an extreme amount but a decent amount in this game in the first half in the second half they found it there’s a play late in the I forget if it was the third quarter of the second quarter where Zion Williamson it was in the third quarter where Zion

Williamson could have grabbed an offensive rebound and instead just had his arms out being like why didn’t you call the foul and said just get the ball man get the ball put it back up that would have been two points that could have changed this game but they were

Really frustrated with the refs and they were letting it get to them right it was also frustrating because they clearly missed Brandon Ingram in the first half of this game a winnable game that with him in some better playmaking in the first half you probably don’t get in a

15-point deficit at halftime and how does that change things right it was also frustrating because Josh freaking giddy who shoots 33.5% from three goes five of eight from deep in this game it was frustrating because OKC couldn’t miss from anywhere in the first half at all in this one especially from

Mid-range though they went ice cold with real good defense by the Pelicans in the second half but they just couldn’t miss the Pelicans were playing really good defense and OKC wouldn’t Miss right if you look at their shot chart disparity in the first half and the second half particularly from mid-range like they

Couldn’t make a mid-ranger to save their lives again good defense by the Pelicans in the second half that’s good that’s how normally it goes mid-range again isn’t the most efficient shot here if you rely on that you’re going to be kind of up to the whims of some poor shooting

And they did and it’s one of the reasons why the Pelicans got back into this game but when we talk about some of the things here the reasons for the frustration right and maybe you’re frustrated that they didn’t play JV you know more than 10 minutes in this game though I really

Don’t think that that was the correct thing and again more on that they weren’t throwing double teams at him like the Miami Heat did so maybe you’re frustrated about that though but a lot of the things we just said that we talked about and that we will talk about particularly in the next

Segment when we look at CJ molum in the fourth quarter versus Zion Williamson in the fourth quarter the Pelicans control a lot of that stuff right you control your composure to the refs even if the refs are being bad even if the refs are just being annoying

Which they def Bill Bill Kennedy is annoying we shouldn’t know ref names bill kenned is a Wikipedia page why does he need a Wikipedia page like why are anyway let me know if you think ref should have Wikipedia pages in the comments down below or if they’re just

Not important enough to do that have that whatever right A lot of the things that we just said the reasons I just said are things the pelcat could control and they didn’t in this game and that’s really frustrating right Locust of control control what you can control and

The Pelicans did not do that in this game did not do that in this game they were good overall right if you look at some of the numbers and some of the stats here they weren’t outrebounded for the most part they did a good enough job

To kind of really stay in with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the most part not exceptionally but OKC only had seven offense boards right New Orleans had five and New Orleans had more Second Chance points than they did they held the Oklahoma City Thunder to just six second chance points it’s just

Frustrating when two of those come on one of the more key crucial possessions of the game New Orleans had more fast break points than OKC they were basically even in points in the paint and you still couldn’t get that win partially and you know you had fewer

Turnovers New Orleans did nine to 12 right that’s just a frustrating way to lose a game giving up 40 in the second quarter but then coming back and winning the third quarter 32 to 23 but then falling just short enough late in the fourth because you couldn’t execute well

Let’s talk about that actually again those are things the Pelicans can control a lot of and they did and still didn’t lose or and then they sorry they did and then they still lost right but the things they could control their composure other things you’ve got to get

That under control they did not in this game I don’t think and there were some tactical things right not executing in the fourth quarter is actually something that you can control more of and they didn’t let’s look at C.J McCullum shot chart how he played versus how Zion

Played and I think that’s a big area that cost this team the game and that’s disappointing that’s coming up here next in today’s episode of Locked on Pelicans right now though I’m here to tell you about eBay Motors passion drive and patience what brings home the winning trophy is also what keeps your

Or something like that that they would have won the game they would have but they also could have won the game if they just executed better and had a better offense in the fourth quarter and they did not in this game the fourth quarter particularly late in the fourth

Quarter was kind of rough I’m going to ask you this who do you think took the most shot attempts for the Pelicans in the fourth quarter it was CJ McCullum okay probably should be Zion right yeah let me ask you another question here who took the second most shot attempts for

The Pelicans well if CJ was number one it should be on right no Larry n Jr with four cj8 Larry with four me ask you who the third most shout attempts went to in the fourth quarter okay that one was Zion Williamson who’s one of three late

In the fourth though I found this very very strange because while the game was kind of getting away from the Pelicans late in this one they they went away from Zion and I don’t really understand why there was like no set being run from him he wasn’t touching the ball in the

Final five and a half minutes of the game CJ McCullum was one of five including going and 0 for two from three and I don’t mind two shot attempts from three Zion Williamson was 0 for one he didn’t go to the line and he had a steal

Like he he has like a a nothing statline essentially here they’ve got to get the ball to your best player right like this is this is I don’t want to say coaching malpractice cuz this is kind of on on everybody to be perfectly honest but for

Zion Williamson who in this game was 10 of 17 that’s 59% nine of 10 from the free throw line five rebounds 10 assists you’ve got to get him the ball late in the game he had 29 Points on 17 shot attempts they couldn’t stop him right length normally bothers him but Chad

Hren was having some trouble in this game keeping up with the speed of the Pelicans and they had to take him out at times and there was an opportunity there and the Pelicans did not take advantage normally length like that does bother Zion Williamson but it wasn’t here with

Chad hrid and Zion was having an awesome game he was also by the way awesome on defense the entire Pelicans team was awesome in the third quarter on defense it was phenomenal going into the start of the fourth they were awesome too but late in the game in the final five

Minutes to have him only take one shot to not be involved in actions or possessions and more or less have CJ McCullum dribbling the life out of the ball I think is a big problem I don’t know what went in into that decision and

I’m not going to I I don’t think it’s CJ trying to be like it’s my time to do everything here right like I’m going to shine it’s something that this team needs to kind of figure out and I’m wondering if it’s just the moment was too big for them they just maybe Zion

Ran out of steam out of gas in this game right like that is a distinct possibility as well but for the most part like you can’t do this right he played 38 and a half minutes that’s a lot but you’ve got to rely on your guys

Down the stretch to go get that win for you and while CJ was excellent in the third quarter he struggled mightily in the first half of the game third quarter was good fourth quarter was not great you need to run things especially with Brandon Ingram out through Zion

Williamson and this team did not do that and I don’t have an answer or a reason why it’s very strange to me they were having possessions where he didn’t touch the ball where he wasn’t involved with the ball at all and frankly in the fourth quarter at times the team just

Looked out of sorts there was one possession where CJ was just kind of like dribbling around and Naji Marshall is standing in the left corner right corner depending on how you’re looking and it just clearly knew the ball was never going to him he stood there literally just stood there and then

Pantomimed like taking a three just did that motion with his hands while the play was going on right like it was weird he wasn’t looking at CJ being like CJ shoot or anything like that you know he just seemed like he knew it was CJ going to go and take the shot maybe

That’s a coaching decision maybe that’s on CJ too maybe that’s just nobody doing anything no one was particularly moving to give him an outlet to do anything so it’s not entirely on him but that’s not a way that you’re going to run good offense and one of the things we’ve

Learned this season particular right like how we’ve talked about right I’ve hammered this point home regularly offense and defense are very connected good offense can lead to good defense defense bad defense can lead to worse offense too that is definitely the case for the New Orleans Pelicans and in this

One where if you’re not playing good offense this Oklahoma City Thunder team who is long lean and athletic can get out and run against you and punish you with that more on the size stuff in the next segment when we look at the center position and all of that but some of

Those possessions in the fourth quarter particularly late were just gross you’re not going to win the game when you’re not involving your best player in actions and other things and that’s something that I I don’t have anything for you right like that is where you got to get

Zion going maybe again it’s just he ran out of steam he’s been playing a lot of minutes playing the entirety of quarters and things like that but that was truly truly a a very disappointing part to the game where they easily could have been winning and gotten and done won this

Game and they just didn’t and it was an important matchup and that’s why it leads to this being such a frustrating loss in my opinion for the New Orleans Pelicans right Zion needs to be taking the most shots you’ve got to find a way as a team if he can’t

If they’re Walling him off and other things like that well then he should have the assists right but a lot of those were C.J McCullum isolation plays and I don’t know if that’s the move late in the fourth quarter ball movement is when this team shots when they get teams

Going into rotations things like that maybe when it’s starting to fall apart is when you need to put in yonas Valen chunis and slow things down a little bit though at that point with him not playing at all in the second half how effective is he going to be basically

Coming into the game ice cold I don’t know if that’s necessarily the move one of the frustrating parts of this is is there an answer to this sort of thing or is this just who the Pelicans are after the game Willie Green said this is a good a good learning experience right it

Is and it isn’t right I think people use words like account ility and learning experience and all of those without like realizing you there needs to be actions with that too right is it actually a learning experience if you never do anything with it what about the 16 17

Other games where the Pelicans were trailing entering in the fourth quarter and they couldn’t overcome that and they lost right what about the blown double digit links which has gotten better are those learning experiences if they keep happening what are you learning then cuz you’re clearly not learning the right

Things so this is only a learning experience if if you’re not going to go and make the same mistake again so what are your actions for that how do you ensure you’re not going to make the same mistake again and that’s going to be on the coaching staff with this to kind of

Get that into the players and figure out what needs to be done because this was particularly the way the offense just didn’t do anything for those final five minutes a very disappointing loss for a game that they easily could have won and would have keep kept seeing them on the

Up trajectory particularly with a really really difficult schedule going forward the the Pelicans were had scored in those final five and a half minutes by the way uh 15 to seven seven points on 10 shot attempts they were three of 10 one of four from Deep Trey Murphy went

101 her went 0 for one CJ 0 for two they didn’t get to the free throw line once like that is a failure of the process right there leading to poor results that’s where it’s like process to results right coming up next let’s talk Jonas V chunis

Larry n Jr Jeremiah Robinson Earl I I’m of two minds of this but I don’t think Jonas Val chunis was the answer but given what we just talked about maybe actually was curious what you think let me know in the comments down below here what I have to say coming up here next

If you’re an everyday or meaning you listen Monday through Friday let me know in the comments down below okay let’s look at the center position here because when you look at the box score for this it’s a little surprising yonas Valentin has played 10 and a half minutes in that was was it

Larry n Jr played 32 and a half minutes and then Jeremiah Robinson Earl also got some run during this in the fourth quarter over over was it the fourth quarter or the uh third quarter let me see in the third quarter didn’t play in the fourth quarter because I think they

Went with um Larry n Jr the entirety of that so got some run in there to spell Larry and give him a break so basically you saw no more yonas valunas after halftime and this is something that the Pelicans have kind of experimenting with where they bring in Larry n Jr to start

The second half don’t start Jonas valent chunis there but you recently saw in the past two games right the win over the Miami Heat and the win over the Detroit Pistons how important yonas Valen chunis is basically playing through the mismatches there right they didn’t do

That in this game and I’ll be honest I don’t think it was the wrong thing Jonas found junis in the minutes that he played 10 and a half was a minus 11 it wasn’t good those minutes out there weren’t good he was not the answer defensively and they weren’t he wasn’t

The answer on offense either yeah he finished with 6.6 rebounds in 10 minutes that’s not bad and and one nice assist when they one time doubled kind of doubled him they weren’t it to me it seemed like the thunder came in with the right game plan

Of if we double him we’re going to get picked apart and having just seen it for two straight games they didn’t bite into that and they were potentially willing to let JV cook them and maybe you should have let him do that that’s fair to say

But it wasn’t going to open things up like we had seen in the past now you might point to the rebounding right well you’ve got to have him out there for rebounding when that late possession in the fourth quarter the Oklahoma City Thunder I think got two offensive boards

During that possession and that kind of really was when it was over for New Orleans in my opinion but again they only had six offensive boards the entirety of this game now four of them came in the fourth quarter but they only had six second chance points it wasn’t

Like you were getting killed repeatedly there one of the things we’ve talked about that I’ve talked about on the show is sometimes you need to ride with the people that get you there and in the second half for the most part right Larry Nance Jr was a positive Jeremiah Robinson Earl in the

Five minutes that he played the team was a plus seven like something was working there right Larry n Jr was out there on the court when they were on that run coming back from 20 points down there’s something to be said for that right like I do think that’s important to to look

At with with some of this stuff you know I think his plus minus is a little bit skewed because of those final five minutes or so from the Pelicans five and a half minutes where they were outscored but if you look at it from the part before that happened right Larry was a

Plus n and things were working he was a plus n in 13 and a half minutes and this team was getting it done part of that was their defense it not part of it it was they were getting it down on the defensive side of the ball the Oklahoma

City Thunder couldn’t shoot at that point they were shooting under 41% from the field under 25% from three they were turning the ball over a little bit to and New Orleans at one point I think it was a 140 run they went on like 162 something in that range in from late in

The third to the middle of the 4th and really is when they kind of took it to the Oklahoma City Thunder and that worked really well they were even winning the minutes when Shay gilis Alexander was out there on the court from the start of the third quarter to

The final five and a half minutes right so let’s ignore when OKC kind of ran away with it and you’ve got to do the foul stuff with all of that right you know that period where New Orleans took the lead and got back into the game Shay

Was a minus 14 they were killing the Thunder in those minutes things were going well for New Orleans right you you can’t be frustrated of a close game loss if you don’t make it close in the first place and New Orleans did that by playing small and trying to kind of

Match the athleticism out there you know it got him back into it there’s something that’s got to be said for that they weren’t able to close the game out and I’d say that probably has more to do with what we just talked about in the last segment of like CJ

Shouldn’t be taking some of those shots and they’ve got to work the ball around or get it to Zion and do the that sort of thing you know I don’t think Jonas V chunis was the answer here this shows the need to to not have him on the team

Next year right there’s no point in playing a guy $15 million if you’re not going to use him like this if he’s only going to play 10 minutes and we’ve seen repeatedly that this is how Willie Green operates and I don’t even think the Larry Nance Jr starting in the second

Half is actually the answer long term it’s worked at times look I thought it worked in this game too but that was also just kind of how the Pelicans were playing overall and I don’t think it was Larry being the Difference Maker by himself but it’s what you got right now

But it means they need to sort the center position out this offseason like that is absolutely certain so yeah like I I do think it was right to sit JV because the results speak for themselves with that the final five minutes or so of the game I think are definitely up

For debate on whatever could have worked and what we saw wasn’t it as also by the results right so frustrating loss like isn’t that the best way to put it was do you think this was the most frustrating loss of the Season Like I Do Is there another game

That you think was a more frustrating loss for the New Orleans Pelicans I’m curious I think this was the most frustrating one also like I’m still annoyed about seeing Bill Kennedy’s face like that but the call on the court is pauses for dramatic effect for what feels like freaking forever like there’s

Just no need for that just make the call and move on it frustrating frustrating if you’re frustrated let me know in the comments down below so that’s going to do it for this episode of Locked on Pelicans probably going to talk a little bit more about this game in tomorrow’s

Episode but also like what do they just need to do to fix these fourth quarter woses we’re going to talk about that I think in tomorrow show as well get you set for the bucks also and then the Boston Celtics oh man the schedule is tough we’re going to cover it all here

At the lockd on Pelicans podcast part of the lockon podcast Network your team every day as always I’m your host Jake Madison at NOA Jake on Twitter and I’ll be back with yall tomorrow frustrating

Despite coming back from being 20 points down the New Orleans Pelicans had their most frustrating loss of the season to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Jake Madison gives you the biggest reasons why and also looks at how the Pels need to execute better with CJ McCollum and Zion Williamson on the floor in the 4th quarter. And would playing Jonas Valanciunas more actually have been the answer for a win?

  1. Refs terrible no consistency on both sides, Z getting hacked Jose getting hip checked and no whistle, that really hurts cuz I feel like we could’ve won this one

  2. It doesn’t matter if we have a winning record. As long we play CJ and Val (+ Griff up there in the management) this is and will be always a losing team. An always “what if”

  3. Just replace Valanciunas with Gafford and despite still having CJ we could reach the final. If you put a decent ball handler instead cj we win the clutch games

  4. I’d rather watch Zion taking a bad shot than CJ taking an open three in clutch times.

  5. The only reason why we might go to the playoff is that BI got injured at end of the season. If we had to watch CJ taking 25 shots every game we are a lottery team

  6. Zion literally had the ball numerous times down the stretch. The only shot CJ took that’s might’ve been a bad shot was that quick transition three. All the pels needed were a few rebounds to close out the game. JV can do better than 2 rebounds in 33 minutes

  7. its completely a good learning experience. we will face this team in the second round and they have less experience than the pels. lean lean lean on cj brother. all pressure on cj=goooooood. ride or die with cj. seriously think about that

  8. It’s disappointing cause it was a winnable game despite the early deficit but the Pels low BBALL IQ shows itself again in a close game. Also, don’t go down 20 points in the 3rd quarter at home.

I don’t know if JV is wasn’t the answer but I know Larry wasn’t the answer. Single game, single quarters +/- is garbage. The Pelicans made their comeback in spite of Larry. JRE had 3 rebounds in 5 minutes, Larry had 2 rebounds in 33 minutes. That’s hilarious.

Totally agree with Jake btw about Bill Kennedy being overly dramatic with his refereeing. Like dude you’re an NBA ref and the way he’s announcing whether a challenge is successful or not he acts like he’s a stereotypical anime character.

  9. A bit confused at the hate on Bill Kennedy. He's more of an entertainer but I don't think there were any wrong calls. Main problem I saw at the end was the great defense by OKC denying the Zion-Trey P&R, and our team not having a counter for that.

  10. Pels lost this game when CJ and Herb trying to play hero ball. As I said before, CJ can shoot u in and most of the time, CJ shoots you out. History says that!

  11. Lol good that Pels lost 10 min for starting center 😂😂😂 Larry played 33 min and still got less points and rebounds… problem is both JV defence … hes just the scape goat for other peoples bad defence. They let their man go its 2 v 1 when they score they say JV had lead feet loool. Get a grip guys and start thinking hes not the best center but you dont know how to use him

  12. I honestly really wish Brandon Ingram comes back, healthy and ready to play ASAP and if at all possible, please swap CJ and Trey ‘s minutes around let CJ come off the bench and let Trey start I honestly feel that would give us more momentum starting games

  13. Say what you will, but I find Bill Kennedy funny as hell. He knows the boos are coming and simply waits for it. Also, at least he speaks clearly when delivering the news and doesn't stumble over himself.

  14. Larry does have a knack for missing layups! Zion can't allow himself to be denied the ball. He has to call and demand the ball. This was an issue of him trusting his teammates too much. We gotta get this Milwaukee win.

  15. We’ve needed to change for months and still haven’t done it. There’s 10 games left, ain’t nothing gonna change. Im expecting a first round exit tbh.
