As legalized gambling has become more and more popular in the United States and more and more a part of our conversation there’s a developing story and a potential scandal in the NBA sources tell ESPN that Toronto Raptors forward jonte Porter is under investigation following multiple instances of betting irregularities over

The past several months the issues surround prop bets involving Porter from two different games one on January 26th and one on March 20th now I’m sure a lot of people saw this headline yesterday and aren’t fully clear on what it means so that’s our job is to try and clarify

And in those games the unders came through uh for jonte Porter in two games with which uh he left the game after playing only four minutes and after 3 minutes and in both of those games for DraftKings uh that the be that jonte Porter was the biggest Money winner

Among all players in the NBA on individual prop bets which are essentially picking over under uh on a player’s you know scoring rebounding assists and then in one of those cases three-point attempts and the it was flagged certainly by the gambling companies and Jon Porter is now been

Sidelined in Toronto the league told us that they are looking into this and certainly this has set reverberations around the NBA uh certainly the the worst nightmare for any professional League uh to have uh the suggestion of gambling in involved uh in player performance uh within a

Locker room within a game uh certainly right now this is circumstantial now the league will take a look I’m sure along with authorities uh to find out more uh if jonte Porter or anybody had any impact on you know the kind of bets that were placed as David perum reported for

Us there were people trying to get that there were betters trying to get down bets of upwards of 10 to $20,000 uh on individual Porter uh uh uh bets prop bets yeah the the idea being he’ll score fewer than next amount of points and there are people trying to

Bet an insane amount of money an abnormal amount of money on those sorts of bets relative to what you might expect and again this isn’t the it’s not LeBron James we’re talking about it’s not a player who you would normally expect people to be racing to place prop

Interest and all of a sudden people are wanting to play bet big on him it raised red flags and that’s when a similar situation played out last Thursday with Porter again against the Kings and bookmakers at that point were convinced something was up again in both of those

Games he played very few minutes before leaving the game and while David’s connection with us is not perfect I think you can understand what he’s saying I wanted to bring Tim into this as well because again you played in the league and you understand the magnit ude

Of something like this and you were saying to me before we came on here I won’t put the words in your mouth that there would be nothing easier to engineer than something like that absolutely a role player guaranteeing basically his unders by taking himself out of the game because of a physical

Issue because look if if you going to bet on the under um and go out there and play your normal minutes well then you’re going to have to do something different in terms of the way you’re playing your coach is going to pick up on that right away it’s not like you can

Uh like in this instance uh allows for uh there to be a look into it but the marketing of gambling uh the fact that it’s on the team’s social media it’s in the arena that these in many cases these very young players uh could perhaps be lured into situations they otherwise
