Minnesota Timberwolves keep TJ Warren, what do they do with last roster spot? Plus Wolves-Pistons

Be again live on lockdown Sports on lockdown Sports Minnesota Tonight on YouTube the next episode in your feed after this one today will be the locked on Sports Minnesota basketball party that audio will go up midday today that’s a show it’s a round table a few

Folks uh in the Minnesota the the Wolves basketball scene uh Reggie Wilson from car L Jack Borman editor and chief of K suus Ron Johnson the Ron Johnson show usually yours truly is on that show I’m not on today’s episode but um tune in to

That later on today in the audio feed as well all right let’s get into it so I want to talk first about the TJ Warren stuff so uh it was announced or actually the Wolves I don’t know that the teams actually announced it as of this recording but the athletic John C inski

And Sham Sani reported the wolves are signing TJ Warren to the rest for the rest of the season as his second 10-day contract expired he’s not in the rotation anymore however the NBA rules stipulate we’ve talked about this a little bit previously um but a team must have 14

Players on the roster you can’t go more than I think it’s a total of three weeks for the season and two weeks at a time or maybe it’s four weeks for the season and two weeks at a time without um having at least 14 players under contract so the Wolves basically after

The deadline they waited until they had to sign someone they signed Justin Jackson at the time and then ended up letting him go he appeared in I think two games and then brought on TJ Warren they still have an open roster spot and the rules State the wolves have to fill

It by the last day of the regular season now for let’s first talk about TJ Warren I think it makes a ton of sense you had to keep somebody he fills a potential depth role for a couple of reasons number one um positionally like right

Like I mean he effectively is a a toan princees type player in that he is probably best cast as a small ball four but can also play the three at this stage in his career he’s not an outstanding Defender um but he provides you some size some length in theory the

Ability to hit up an open shot although in a timol’s uniform TJ Warren is just two of 11 from Deep um but you know he can give you team defense he can give you a little bit of scoring off the dribble if you need him to uh which you

Know if if you do you’re kind of in a bad way which the wol were on this last home standad right like he played legit rotation minutes um for what two three games or something like that where where they really lean on him to to provide something um overall he hasn’t looked

Super impressive in a wolves uniform but again it’s the ability to fill that role positionally and from a depth perspective and then also there’s the intangible stuff and you know I occasionally we kind of poke fun at the idea of having the veteran presence Etc but it’s a real thing when you talk

About a team that has this interesting mix of guys right it’s not you know the the Talking Heads Nally like to talk about the Wolves as a young team and that’s just because they’re you know best player and budding star is Young he’s 22 right but cat’s not young

Anymore Rudy’s not young Mike Conley certainly isn’t young Jade McDaniels I guess you would still say you know the same effectively the same age year as Anthony Edwards you know the bench at this point is is a mix like I guess Nas still right like they’re not as much

Young they are inexperienced when it comes to the playoffs but even still virtually everyone in this roster played in the playoffs last year and most of them have played in the playoffs the last couple of years and obviously Conley and Gober have been there a bunch

Now nobody I don’t think has been beyond the second round of the playoffs that’s on this current roster I don’t believe Conley ever got there with Memphis I’m not sure that team ever got to the Conference Finals um but you know at least in terms of that and Gober

Obviously much talked about his Utah Jazz teams never got past the second round so yeah it’s inexperienced in terms of playoffs and TJ Warren gives you that like hey I’ve won a ring before right like I was on the roster that uh um you know that Sun’s roster or I was

On you know he played for um other teams that have advanced deep into the playoffs uh before so he brings that element to the team and actually you know what he wasn’t on that Suns steam I’m mixing up my years here but he put he’s played in the playoffs three

Different times right he did go deep into the playoffs last year um I guess second round before the Suns he was on the Suns team that lost to the Nuggets uh he he did have two stints with the Suns but um did not get to the finals

Because that was when he was Pacers Brooklyn injured in between so I’m mixing my years all that to say he’s got a little bit of playoff experience was on a team that made a run last year that a lot of people thought could win at all

Last year um so there’s a lot to like about what TJ waren can bring and again you’re talking about a guy who like your 11th or 12th player now they still have an open roster spot what does that mean well first of all they could sign anybody right like they could Elevate if

They wanted to and I’m not saying they should um but they could Elevate and this is actually maybe the most likely scenario they could Elevate Luca Garza to the playoff roster if they’re worried at all about um or to the I should say the active 15-man roster they’re worried

At all about cat which they should be right like he’s not playing at earliest until the playoffs first round um you worry about how much Rudy’s banged up if Luca Garza played in a playoff game you’re in deep trouble but like if you need him in you know game

Six of the first round because cat hasn’t come back and Rudy’s fouled out and like you’re playing a team that’s got a bunch of big bodies and maybe Nas is in foul trouble or seven tweaks an ankle or whatever you’re gonna want a big body right and Garza can give you that he’ll

Play hard Etc like you’re probably in a tough spot but like if you just got to get to that next round to get C back on the floor or whatever like they could Elevate him right from a two-way contract to a 15 to the 15 man roster so

That he’s eligible for the playoffs the other option is signing a young player to a contract and then effectively you giving him that offseason contract to keep him on the roster like you know if there’s I don’t know who this would be but if there’s someone out there a

G-league player that they want to do that with and I guess quote unquote develop or they could grab somebody who’s still out there on the buyout market and there’s some names out there believe it or not um I’m just going to Rite off a couple I I don’t think they

Go this route but you never know Joe Harris is probably the most attractive name that’s out there uh one of the best three-point Shooters in the league led the league in shooting a couple of years um or two out of three years the 1819 season and the 2021 season both in

Brooklyn he shot north of 47% from three just two years ago he was 46% from three last year he was 43% from three and was a rotation guy on that Nets team he was in Detroit this year and only got into 16 games so very limited action um so

For his career he’s just a shade under 44 4% and he hasn’t been worse than 42% you know not counting this year in the last five seasons so or six seasons actually so all that to say if you just want some shooting depth like he’s not

Going to do anything else for you right like Joe Harris isn’t playing defense for a reason he’s not on a team right now right um you could say that about all these guys so Joe Harris is maybe the most attractive one Danny Green although you know at this stage like

What’s Danny Green done he played two two games this year for Philly he played an 11 total games last year between Memphis and Cleveland he hasn’t played rotation minutes in two full seasons since the spring of 22 with the Sixers and he’s maybe more of the Leaning guard

Version of TJ Warren right he he’s he’s a essentially a three that can play the two or two that can play the three versus Warren who’s more of a three4 I don’t think Dan Green’s probably a fit but he’s an option Uh Kevin Knox if you

Want somebody who’s just a scorer and in theory a shooter although that hasn’t always worked out for uh for Kevin Knox career he’s 34 % from three but the theory was always hey he could be a six-man type guy that’s never been the case um like I don’t the Wolves aren’t

Going to do that but he’s a name at least that you could look at if you’re looking at someone who might still have some upside he’s only 24 years old um there’s not a whole like Robin Lopez is out there remember after he was traded from the bucks he sat Courtside wolves

Bucks and was reading a book he’s still a free agent if you are worried and need some size there he’s really the only true big um that would be an option for the wolves so I I mean I tend to think the most likely scenario is the promoting of Luca

Garza to a full contract um but you never know so stay tuned to that they happened till the last day of the regular season so what two and a half weeks or so in order to make that decision so keep an eye on the rumor mill related to that all right let’s uh

Move on to talk a little more about the Wolves defense and then we’ll look at the preview of wolves Pistons we got all that coming up here next today’s episode of lock out wolves is brought To Us by our friends at eBay Motors passion drive and patience what

Free Amazon Fire TV channels app part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day all right on Tuesday show we talked about the timal defense and how dominant it’s been this year and I I posted something on a late uh you know following up on the show from Tuesday

Late on Tuesday I posted something in X about reiterating this that the Wolves currently and this is still the case after through play on Monday so entering play on Tuesday of this week the wolves have a 2.9 Point per 100 possession lead over the second best defense in the

League okay so second best or they have the best defensive rating the next best defense is 2.9 points per 100 possessions behind them which is Orlando currently only one other time in the last 20 years has there been a team with a greater gap between where the wolves

Are currently and the second best defense in the league and that was the uh San Antonio Spurs 20156 okay so eight years ago and only two other times in the past 20 years has a team had a greater than two-point advantage over the second best defense that was Milwaukee in the 1920 season

The Boston Celtics in 0708 of course the Kevin Garnett Anything is Possible championship team with gett as the defensive player of the year that whole thing so one of the best defenses given the league context over the past two decades it’s just a fact that’s what we’re looking

At but they’re not just beating up on the bad teams on cleaning the glass you can sort by rank of opponent and right now the Timberwolves have the I mean this is this part isn’t surprising but they have the best defense against top 10 offens opponents the entire league they’ve played 24

Times they’ played against the top 10 offense and I mentioned this the other day they still have five games left against top 10 offenses two against Denver two against Phoenix and one against Atlanta so as of right now those those teams are in the top five in

Offense so there’s still five more to go but the wolves are 14- 10 against teams with top 10 offenses and they have the League’s best defensive rating against those teams they have a 112 uh points per 100 possessions allowed which is a full point better than Cleveland number two which is a

Significant spread when you’re talking about facing the best offenses League wide as you might expect this is going to be the case if you go all the way through uh you know you go top 10 middle 10 bottom 10 Timol have a second best defense against the middle 10 uh second

To the Knicks with a healthy lead over the third place Boston Celtics against the middle 10 offensive ranks which is silly but it also goes along with the Wolves playing their competition right now the Wolves defense has been so good this year that they’ve been completely and utterly dominant against the bottom

10 teams they have the best defense in the league by two full points against the bottom 10 teams the best defense by one point against the top 10 second best defense against the middle 10 the best defense by two full points per 100 possessions against the bottom 10

Opposing offenses and by the way the wolves are 19 and4 this year against teams that have a bottom 10 offense which we’ll get a little bit more on that when we talk Pistons here in the next segment so what’s the takeaway here it’s that the Wolves aren’t they’re

Not doing this against and also by the way the Wolves aren’t in a bad division either right like uh I mean you’re talking about a division that has the top three seeds of the Western Conference and another team that still hasn’t been eliminated right every other

Division except uh well I take that back I guess the Warriors are in last in their division and they’re they’re obviously not eliminated yet so but still the top three seeds in the west and three of the best I don’t know I you’d say three of the best four teams

The entire league right um at least record-wise like they’re better than obviously the uh the idless Sixers have dropped all the way to eighth in the in the Eastern Conference you know two months ago I was I was petrified of the Sixers because embiid is so tough on the

Wolves always but that’s not a thing right now and the Knicks aren’t to that level like the Bucks obviously have been up and down the Cavs have been up and down the wolves have played the Cavs tough twice so I think you’d say three of the top four teams in the entire NBA

Are in the are in the Wolves division so it’s not like the wolves are doing this against cupcake teams and then um on top of that another bigger picture thing uh we’re now talking what two and a half weeks that the wolves have not had carony Towns at their disposal and

They’re still third in the entire league in net rating and it’s not like they’ve got almost we got a 2.1 point lead over Denver who’s fourth in the entire league in net rating according to cleaning the glass and the wolves are only 2/10 behind Oklahoma City Boston is number

One by a wide margin but the wolves are on the heels of OKC and you know standing wise they’re also only a game behind OKC now the Thunder W on on Wednesday they beat New Orleans barely they well they beat him by seven uh but the Wolves still have a real shot at

Number two in the west and number two in net rating League behind Boston Denver is at number one in the west but that net rating uh now they’ve been playing well too and maybe another day we’ll look at the we’ll compare the remaining schedules for these teams we looked at

OKC’s briefly yesterday’s show on Tuesday’s show and um you know they’ve got a tough a really tough upcoming schedule it’s actually not that much easier for Denver I mean they’ve got Phoenix Minnesota Cleveland are their next three then they get the Spurs then they get they have to go to

LA to play the the Clippers they have at Utah they’ve got another Wolves game and then they close with at Spurs at Grizzlies so I would say of of those three teams the Thunder have the toughest schedule the wolves and Nuggets are probably about similar um in terms

Of back-to-backs the wolves have one back-to-back left Denver has one back-to-back left believe OKC also has one left so uh all that to say this division is is incredibly difficult and the wolves have have not had an easy go of it um you know early in the season the

Schedule might have been easier in terms of rest but they played a tough schedule early on in terms of opponents and now down the stretch here it’s a bit of a mix we talked about this yesterday but some really tough top tier competition like Denver uh I guess mostly Denver but then

Also having to face Phoenix and then you got some bottom tier stuff like Washington and Detroit on Wednesday and um Atlanta’s in there and some teams like that so all right let’s uh let’s look at this Pistons matchup wolves have not seen in Detroit in a couple of

Months and it was a bit touch and go when the Wolves were in Detroit um so now they get them at home we’ll talk about that matchup here next today’s episode of lockdown wolves is brought To Us by our friends at Amazon Fire TV and we talk about Amazon

Minnesota has not seen Detroit since mid January if I’m not mistaken and at the time Detroit was 4 and 36 coming into that matchup the Wolves however gave up 40 points in the first quarter to Detroit and this was like at this stage I was still pretty

Confident we work going to see a backslide from Minnesota to what they did last year where they completely played down to competition all the time and they lost they went what like I don’t know seven and five or something against the worst uh four teams in the

NBA or something like that last year it was barely above 500 against the worst teams whereas if you just assume or right around 500 if you just assume that you win 75% of your games against terrible teams you know the Wolves would have been like a what five SE lastas

Year instead of an eight all that to say I was pretty sure that wasn’t the case but I remember at the end of that first quarter thinking you know is this the other shoe right like that’s what we were all thinking earlier this year even in January there were moments where it was

Like maybe this is it the wolves are actually down one 40 to 39 at the end of the first quarter against Detroit but they had a much stronger second quarter they’re up eight at halftime but still this was a like a three possession game down the stretch it wasn’t like a blow

Up by any stretch the Wolves only ended up with a minute of garbage time like Troy Brown and Shake bu each played a minute in this game um The Wolves were healthy at least in terms of who was on the floor Kat and ant each had 27 in this

Game neither one shot the ball all that well overall I take that back cat was good cat had 27 on 17 shots was five of five from outside the arc turns out that’s pretty good um The Wolves also only turned it over nine times which is we say unusual now of course it’s

Detroit right Detroit doesn’t Force turnovers defensively they don’t really do anything well defensively excuse me they also foul a ton the wols gots the line 21 times in this game against Detroit uh which I mean like Detroit actually gives up more what do they average they give up on average

Almost 26 free throws per game so it’s actually below what Detroit has averaged and the Wolves while they’ve been folling their opponents a ton they haven’t seen their offensive free throw rate really drop all that much well it doesn’t feel like ank gets a great whistle they’re still getting a decent

Amount of whistles they’re just fouling way more and so that differential hasn’t been positive for the Wolves really since the gobear money sign game in Cleveland I coincidence maybe maybe not definitely not but you know the differential has not been positive for the Wolves hopefully that isn’t the

Thing in the playoffs but it’s a problem for another day in that last game against Detroit the Wolves were a plus two on the glass again they only turned it over nine times they shot 15 of 30 from three so straight up 50% from outside the arc and

They’re coming off a game this week against uh Golden State where they shot 52% from three I think they were was it 21 of 40 I think also in this game against Detroit the wolves are at plus 14 points in the paint which is an area that they’re

Going to need to dominate Detroit looks a little different now post trade deadline but um remember the last time they faced it it was actually right after they’ made that trade in January the galinari trade um and so the Pistons were a bit in flux at that point in time

They they’re a bit obviously more stable now uh but the roster looks a little bit different kilan Hayes started in that game he’s obviously been bought out um Kevin Knox is a player I just talked about he was on the Pistons at that point in time Joe

Harris was on the Pistons too these guys have all been bought out right they’re all out there on the free agency market um and were on the Pistons at the time so it’s not the same Pistons team for the season which again is only a little bit helpful because they’ve had 30 guys

Suit up and play a game for them this year that’s right 30 players have have put on a Pistons jersey in a period in an NBA game this season the team is not the same and also they’ve got a long injury list too I mean like Taj Gibson

Is on this team now he’s only appeared in one game since signing there um Kate Cunningham’s been in and out of the lineup he did not play in the last game The Wolves played against the Pistons so it’s really hard to say exactly what we’re GNA see uh but for

The season for whatever it’s worth the Pistons have the according to basketball reference the third excuse me fourth worst defense and fifth wor offense in the league their net rating is 28th out of 30 they’ve only won 12 games but their Pythagorean win total is actually 18 so they’ve been fairly unlucky in

Some close games but they do turn it over more than any team in the league offensively and they are 27th in defensive turnover rate so they lose the turnover battle virtually every night just like they did last time out against the Wolves they lost it 12 to9 uh they

Also foul a ton they’re dead last in opponent free throw attempts as I said earlier nearly 26 free throw attempts per game is what they’re allowing their opponents uh the the Pistons also like to play fast they top 10 in Pace I mentioned this on Tuesday show

Overall I think the Wolves should be playing fast without carony towns they should be shooting a lot of Threes play a higher variance offensive game they don’t have to do that and probably shouldn’t try to do that against the Pistons even if Chris Fitch is trying to

You know cement some habits for this team uh like you don’t want to be in a a game with too many possessions against a team that has nothing to lose that has young players uh um that you know like you never know right like you don’t want to put yourself in that spot

Against the Pistons I would much rather the Wolves just kind of play their game normally let Anto his thing in the half court get Rudy involved uh you know hopefully you get a a nice role player performance from a a jade McDaniels or you know um I don’t know whoever else Mike Conley

Um Nas I think this could be a big Nas Game I I just would caution against the wolves to ATT track me with Detroit against some of these other teams that they’re going to play maybe uh but maybe not against Detroit last time out for the Pistons they lost to the Knicks by

25 um Troy Brown Jr by the way is starting right now for the uh for the Pistons and and the shake Milton by the way was bought out by the Pistons and plays for the Knicks so this last game was a former Timberwolf Bowl between shake bton and Troy Brown Jr shak’s

Barely playing off the bench for for the Knicks uh but Troy Brown’s been starting for the Pistons Jaden Ivy you know is is going to be their High usage guy offensively James wisman um Evan Foria Off the Bench for them so uh yeah I mean it’s a we’ll see about Cunningham

Playing it seems unlikely he’s been kind of questionable on and off um so I kind of doubt he’s going to suit up I believe he’s listed as questionable for this game so obviously the Wolves should come out with a win they need to be careful to not have too many possessions they

Should get to the line a bunch in this game they should be able to uh you know launch a bunch of threes and shouldn’t have any problem with the Pistons at home the Wolves by the way are favored by 14 points with our friends at FanDuel so 14-point favorites which is very

Aggressive um and I would not take that bet but the Wolves should win this game the money line is minus 1150 for Minnesota in this game so should be a win should be a win all right as I mentioned earlier the live postcast will be on locked on Sports Minnesota on YouTube immediately

Followed wolves Pistons Luke and Tyler will have that for you the next episode in your feed either right now or shortly on the lock dead wolves audio feed will be the Minnesota basketball party which we’re recording Wednesday morning um so lots of content here in the next 24
