The Truth about Darius Garland – Cleveland Cavaliers, Cavs News
Let’s transition to talk about someone who everyone is losing their minds over um some of it rightfully so Darius Garland is having a nightmare of a season uh he’s really been up and down probably more down than up would be a fair thing to say um but what I want to
Know is that is this an outlier of a season for Darius Garland or is this close to who he is as a player can it I think it can be both in the sense that this is an outlier season because a we’ve seen him play a lot better than
This and we know that one of the things he focused on this offseason was getting bigger getting stronger so he can finish into the paint and he was doing that really well in the beginning of the Season even though he was sucking in areas that he didn’t really need to be
He was just really careless with the ball in a way that he hasn’t like even now when he has turnovers it’s not like the turnovers we saw first month so we’ve seen better versions of Darius and we’ve even seen better versions and different versions of Darius this season
Um but one of the things I think this season does highlight and I feel like we’ve seen it kind of in 2021 as well I know that was like the first year he was an Allstar is it’s really tough for somebody like that of his size to be the
Focal point of an offense especially late in games just because I come back to this thing that the Suns he came out so hot in the first half he was just on fire making everything from three and then like after the game I asked Devon Booker so what did you guys
Do differently and he was like yeah we just denied Garland and that was it it was like you know when I guess when you say it in like five words it’s really like yeah you know he was cooking us so we just stopped letting him touch the
Ball right and that’s you know obviously when you have Mitchell out there that becomes very different but I think it really kind of illustrates that he can’t be the number one option on your team or if he is your number one option like number one perimeter option on your team
Then I think you’re going to be a really flawed team and what we’ve seen is this is the Cavs have been a mediocre team with Donovan Mitchell out and I think we’ve seen that where like they have the skills when everything’s clicking to beat really good teams but then they
Also can lose to the hornets and lose to the Nets you know pretty easily yeah to that uh point about the 2021 season as we’ve seen I think if there’s one thing from this year that is Darius Garland like it’s really him is that leading an
Entire offense on your own I’m not sure if that’s in the bag for him and I’ll use Stephen Curry as kind of I mean he’s like the golden example a smaller guard he’s he’s not really but when you think of players who can control an entire offense it’s not players of Curry’s size
And he’s one of the greatest ever do it at that size and he still struggles I mean how many times you hear that seven Curry’s not clutch it’s because well it could be really hard to generate offense for a guy like that the key is Stephen Curry is really great at moving without
The ball and he’s also developed into a very I mean throughout his career became a very good finisher inside the at The Rim Darius hasn’t been able to do that obviously he’s never going to be Stephen Curry so that’s not a bar I’m holding him to I’m just using it as a comparison
Point to be like yeah no no wonder Darius can’t lead an entire offense on his own there’s like a handful of players his size who have ever been able to do it to any degree so I think that’s really good to bring up yeah and like
When we talk about Steph you just moved so much off ball and he has such a trust in Draymond to really just kind of orchestrate everything and not that Darius doesn’t trust Donovan but that chemistry is so untapped and there’s really no other person to trust when
Donovan’s not out there which makes it really tough because Caris Caris is really good at setting up the big but he’s not really good at like spraying out to the perimeter and he’s not really good at you know Finding Don finding Darius scarling when he’s coming
Off a screen cutting to the you know Baseline like he was at the end of last game and Caris said no I’m just not can pass it to you and bounce it elsewhere so you know like it’s it’s kind of the circumstance but also I feel like this
Season really highlighted that your turn my turn isn’t the way for Darius to go and that he needs to to further develop his game so that he can fit in with a Donovan Mitchell cuz even if it’s not Donovan Mitchell he needs to fit in with
Whoever his teammate is to be the best version of himself and for the team to be their best definitely and to wrap up the Garland discussion and kind of provide my answer to this one is that I do think I you know I try to look at the
Big sample size we have two great Seasons two two Stellar Seasons from Garland and then this one which is easily the worst of the last three um I’ve like to think that because of those first two seasons of him being great and even this one has there’s been flashes
This year he’s had really good games he it’s easy to forget he led that victory over Philadelphia with embiid on the floor and Donovan Mitchell was not playing he just led the team to a victory against Minnesota he was in there when they beat Denver he’s had
Some very good games there’s really if you just break down The Good the Bad and the Ugly from Garland this season at his best he’s been the version that we come to know and love from from what we’ve seen those last two seasons the bad I
Think last night is a good example of bad because his process overall was fine he finished with 14 points 12 assists he was moving the ball he looked like himself he was just missing shots and we saw those limitations that we just talked about with him being an
Undersized guard so it was a bad game but the process was okay and then you think of the ugly which was some of those careless turnovers earlier in the year not shooting the ball which he actually did down the stretch against Charlotte he had a couple open looks that he turned down over
Dribbling just not looking like a competent floor general just not making quick decisions that’s the ugly and we’ve seen all of that this year I would just hope that there’s so many factors that went into why he performed this way many of them are his own lack of
Performances and some of them are outside of his control I hope that next year or even in the playoffs we see some sort of bounce back It’s just tough because he doesn’t like he’s so reli on his outside shot that he doesn’t have another way to consistently score that
Is really reliable like you think of Trey young who’s an incredibly streaky outside shooter Trey young gets to the line so much and like Darius that’s just not a part of his game so it just makes it really tough and I think like you know we saw right after the All-Star
Break he was just hitting everything from three and you’re like oh Darius is back but then when he’s not hitting everything it’s like well Darius isn’t back and that’s you don’t want somebody who has the ball all the time to like their game can’t fluctuate that much and
If they and if it does fluctuate that much then your team’s just not going to be very good yeah and I think to to wrap up the DG discussion I think we have seen the blueprint for the complete version of Garland think at the beginning of the year he’s career high
Rate getting to the line finishing at The Rim but we had those careless turnovers and he wasn’t shooting the ball well and you have the complete opposite when he comes back from the All-Star break where he’s shooting the lights out but he can’t get to the free
Throw line he can’t finish at the rim and he’s cleaned up the turnovers but there’s just really no juice to the offense if you can see him put that all together next year we’re back in business baby
