The Sacramento Kings Get Back On Track with Win Over Utah | Locked On Kings
The Sacramento Kings get back on track with a win over the Utah Jazz and in the process get some much needed reinforcements for their second unit overall a solid month of March for the Kings and we’ll break it all down right here on Lockton Kings you are locked on Kings your daily
Sacramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on Kings hello and welcome into lockon Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all season long my name
Is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for ABC 10 news before we dive into the basketball first and foremost happy Easter to all of you who celebrate hopefully your Easter egg hunt well hopefully your you’re nibbling on chocolate bunnies
While listening uh to this podcast uh hopefully you just had yourself a holiday and thank goodness the Kings ended the holiday off with a victory that has been needed for a while it like this king’s team and the King’s fan base the organization period with the back-to-back losses to the Dallas
Mavericks and then all the injury news uh capped off by the Malik monk news that he’s out the next four to six weeks with his right knee injury we all need needed to pick me up and for the the springtime holiday plus a a king’s win
To wrap it up this is it doesn’t make everything better right it doesn’t correct all the mistakes from earlier this week it doesn’t suddenly make uh Malik Monk’s injury go away but we feel a little bit better right it’s it’s nice for the Kings to come out and get a 127
To 106 convincing victory over a Utah Jazz team who was without low Markin in tonight but even with Markin in right on your home floor the significance of the remainder of this season even without Malik monk right you got to go out and win this game and Truth to be
Told there wasn’t much that was impressive about this king’s win right and and that’s okay like maybe this is too high of expectations on my part but but the Kings accomplished what they were supposed to do right certain players had had had positive uh inputs
And and we’re going to get into like the the play of the king stars and and Harrison Barnes and Keegan Murray stepping up and really a lot of people stepping up with the injuries that the kings are dealing with but there there wasn’t anything about this win that just
Makes me go wow like yes that’s what I needed to see from the Sacramento Kings ultimately what we all wanted to see what we all needed to see was what the Kings gave us tonight which was a a solid home Victory to again get you back on track you got now eight games
Remaining every single game counts because of this win it had a minor impact on the standings in the playin picture a little bit so the Kings it was mission accomplished tonight and sometimes mission accomplished it’s not underwhelming and it’s not overwhelming it just is whelming I guess if if that I
Don’t even know if that makes sense but it just is what it is and so I don’t mean in a negative way at all that this this win wasn’t very impressive by Sacramento they just got the job done right and and in some ways that’s a lot
Of what I and and many Sacramento Kings fans have been asking for over the course of this season right how many games have the Kings needed to just get the job done and they’ve not been able to games against opponents that they should be beating that they had end up
Losing that is now the reason why the kings are out of the playoff picture and settling pretty much into a playin spot so in some ways it wasn’t exciting it wasn’t anything worth getting crazy excited about but it’s what many of us have been asking for from this Kings
Team over the course of this season now this game had a slow first half right rough first half where the Kings I think built like a nine or 10o lead in the second quarter that quickly got down to one and then the Kings had some some
Decent plays to make it I think a six-point lead or something like that uh six or eighto lead going into halftime then the Jazz come out hit a pair of Threes to start the second half tie the game up Mike Brown calls a timeout to start the second half less
Than a minute in and we’re like oh boy here we go are the Kings going to struggle to put the Utah Jazz away in a game that they kind of have to have at this point in the season after that they rattle off I think like a 21-2 run or 23
To2 run or something like that they Blitz the the Jazz for 39 points in the third quarter out scoring Utah 39-25 in that frame led by a 16o third quarter by Harrison Barnes now you might remember going back to the first game of the season when the Kings
Beat the Jazz in Utah Harrison had 33 points in that game right so I don’t know if it’s something the Utah Jazz are doing or not doing against Harrison if he just has confidence against this against this Jazz team or if Harrison knew that he like so many others had to
Step up and take on some of the scoring load and some of the load period with both Kevin herder and Malik monk being out but Barnes stepped up especially in that third quarter it was really a balanced attack from the King starters tonight Keegan Murray 25 points 10 of 18
Shooting from the field three rebounds three assists Harrison Barnes 24 points nine of 12 from the field five of seven from three-point range two rebounds two assists dearon Fox 24 points seven of 15 from the field six rebounds 12 assists three steals two blocks I’m going to get
Into more of Fox’s statline in a little bit damont sabonis 17 points seven of 14 from the field 11 rebounds six assists one steal one block that’s now 70 double doubles on the season for domos 57 straight great double doubles he also has over a th000 rebounds and 600
Assists in a season the only other player to ever do that is Wil Chamberlain no no more need to be said about that just just hear that for what it is domas again doing something that only welt chamber uh Chamberlain has ever done and then you look at like I’m
Not the biggest fan of plus minus stats but sometimes on the surface they tell you what you need to know and here are the plus minuses for the king starters plus 28 plus 28 plus 25 plus 22 plus 18 the king starter stepped up and they did
Their job tonight I love this game because the Kings won as a team they they they recognized we’re missing Malik monk who is more than just the 16 points per game and five assists that he’s been averaging right we’re talking NBA Sixth Man of the Year Energizer Bunny really
The only guy on this roster not named dearn Fox who can consistently create his own shot and go and get the Kings a bucket when he needs to but also of course can facilitate and get his teammates involved and run the second unit like we’ve seen him do all season long right
So that’s a massive loss from leag not to mention Kevin hder with the floor spacing and the shooting and and what Kevin brings to that starting lineup so the Kings as a team the starters took control again the first half a little bit Rocky but the starters did what they
Had to do they got the job done top to bottom having three players finishing with d 20 plus points having four player or five players rather uh finishing with uh with double digits like that’s that’s a team win that’s the team stepping up and and handling business again I don’t
Know if this is going to be the recipe of success every night coming up on Tuesday the Kings have a meeting with the Los Angeles Clippers right and the Clippers are still playing for a lot right now because they are in a in a mess of of a western conference seating
Situation plus I think they have the New Orleans Pelicans biting at their heels a little bit with the chance to drop from four to five and lose home court advantage so the Clippers have a lot to play for right now so Tuesday maybe you’re not going to be able to get five
Players finishing with double figures or Clippers defense maybe won’t allow the Kings to get three players with 20 plus points scoring but when you can have a night like tonight where you’re trying to figure out because this is a figure out process even though we’re in the
Final stretch of the season now that you’ve lost Monk and the kings are missing so many important pieces on the Fly because they don’t have a whole lot of practice time on the Fly they have to kind of figure out how they’re going to make it work together
They can only really do that in the game with ingame reps and tonight we saw them figure it out as a team against a weaker team that they should be beating right so that was that was positive to see but before the game and I talked about this
On my uh emergency podcast that I did uh on Saturday with the the Malik monk news the stars are going to have to step up right the the only chance that the Kings have to get deep enough into the playoffs for Malik to actually return this season dear Fox and damont sabonis
Have to be Superstars to make that happen but beyond that or or or before we even look that that high up the ladder to get this Kings team to secure a playin spot or secure at least a seventh or eighth seed or still try and catch the Dallas Mavericks in sixth the
Stars have to be basically great every single night for the final eight games including tonight nine games this season and I asked Mike Brown about that before the game I said you know it’s kind of unfair because everybody needs to step up but how much do fox and domos really
Need to stay step up and take that upon Him themselves Mike gave me a really good long answer to that but the two quotes that I really took from that that were the most important the first one was Mike basically saying like that’s what the stars are paid to do these are
The moments where you are paid to to step up and and take a lot of that load on your own shoulders and the second one was we have to essentially demand that greatness from him at this point in the season there’s just no other way around
It Fox and sabonis have to be that if the Kings want to accomplish their goals that they still have for themselves even with the injuries that they’re dealing with even short-handed but Mike also said that stars can step up in ways more than just scoring the basketball right
There are going to be games it might be again Tuesday against the Clippers who knows there are going to be games where the kings are going to need minimum 50 points combined from from Fox and sabonis minimum there might be games where they need 60 maybe even 70 from
Those two guys combined if they want a chance to win but asking that of them every single night one is kind of impossible two isn’t always necessary because part of stepping up as a star with injuries is making sure you’re still getting your other teammates involved and your team
Is is is figuring out how to be effective through you and then you look at dearen Fox’s statline tonight right he scored 24 points which is awesome but 12 assists three steals two blocks Fox all over different stat columns tonight on top of just scoring now he didn’t
Need to be the king’s leading scorer to do that because he got 24 from Barnes and 25 from Keegan Marie so he didn’t necessarily need to do that tonight he’s more than capable of being that but Sacramento pulled away in that third quarter because Fox and the offense was
Generating the spray threes that Mike Brown is always looking for Mike shared that in the second half the Kings shot nine of 11 on spray three-pointers which is a pillar of their offense and typically when they’re doing that well shots are falling they’re winning basketball games and they’re creating
Separation that’s exactly what happened in the third quarter Fox for the most part started that and was Distributing the ball all night with his 12 assists so I asked Mike after the game about Fox’s stat line and and how that inspires the rest of his team and here’s
What Mike had to say pregame you talked about your stars stepping up in more ways than just scoring 12 assists for Fox three steals two blocks it’s obviously positive impact that has in a game but what kind of message do you think that sends to the rest of the
Roster in the lock room especially when guys need to step up that fox is making that kind of an impact in so many areas outside of just scoring the basketball no 100% they they both have to and that’s what stars do they make the game easier for everybody else in a lot of
Different ways especially offensively you know you when you draw a two you get off it and and and if you can get to your sweet spot you finish like you’re supposed to especially if it’s oneone and so I thought both those guys were fantastic playing the game of basketball

Night tonight Harrison had a line in this question that I’m about to ask him he’s he’s going to deliver a line that essentially sums up the mindset for the Sacramento Kings for the remainder of the season and going into the postseason in whatever ever capacity whether it’s playoffs playin whatever he gives us
What the king’s kind of mindset is and what their approach is and I think it’s the mindset that that fans should be adopting and taking on themselves here what HB had to say bit of a rocky finish to the month of March with the the two losses to Dallas but overall a pretty
Solid month especially defensively with defensive Improvement I’m curious your perspective on just this month as a whole and figuring it out with the postseason coming up here yeah I mean I think you know when you try to take a a long-term few of where things are at and
The standings and the last you know three games or five games or however you want to look at it I think the thing for us to focus on is um you know the the only way is through whether that’s you know we get the six seat whether we get
In the playing game no matter who we see in the first round whatever it is it’s it’s it’s through and that’s that’s our mentality that’s that’s what we feel like we are um you know we know that any given night if we show up and we do
Things that we’re supposed to do we’re going to be in good shape and um for these next eight games and in the games after that I think that’s our focus and uh we take this month as the positive steps that we’re taking but we know we need continue to get better defensively
And taking care of the ball on offense the only way is through it’s simple but it’s refreshing right it doesn’t matter who the kings are playing for the remainder of this season it doesn’t matter where they end up whether it’s seventh seed e seed 9th 10th I would
Argue 9th 10th matters a little bit because you lose pretty much all advantages when you’re in nine or 10 because you have to win two games to actually get into the playoffs and win that eighth seat at best but it it also doesn’t matter if you make it to the playoffs who you’re
Playing doesn’t matter what kind of injury issues you’re dealing with now take all this with a grain of salt because of course Malik Monk’s injury matters Kevin herder matters but but what I’m taking from this from from Harrison is like he’s simplifying it this is the cards we’ve been dealt this
Is the situation that we’re in we got eight games left we know we’re in the race we’re not out of the playoff picture itself we’re in the playin picture right now wherever we end up we just got to play through it we just got to fight through if we’re at full
Strength if we’re not at full strength certain guys need to step up we need to find a way to win every game it’s simple it’s kind of yeah no duh Harrison it’s obvious but in a way with so many things that we’ve been thinking about and juggling which is paying attention to
The rest of the standings which we’re going to continue still to do right I’m going to update you on the rest of the standings tonight so we’re not just getting rid of that but instead of being paranoid about oh my God like maybe the kings are not going to have homec court
Advantage they’re going to face the suns in the first game what if they lose that game then they’re home against either the Warriors or the Lakers two teams with stars in a single elimination game oh my God or then what if they win and they get into the playoffs but they they
Get the Denver Nuggets the defending champs can they hand handle that what if they get the Clippers or the Pelicans two teams that match up really really well against them oh no like it’s it doesn’t matter play through whatever’s going to happen is going to happen what the Kings
Can control is how they play how they attack each game that doesn’t mean they’re going to win every single game that doesn’t mean it’s fine if they lose right it’s not D divine intervention they very much control their Destiny but I took that mindset from Harrison and thought maybe that’s how fans should
Feel right now because a lot of Us coming into this game tonight a lot of us after uh Saturday’s Malik monk news a lot lot of us were like kings are cooked season’s over how am I supposed to feel like am I supposed to I mean I’m going
To watch the rest of this season because I know the kings are still in a in a postseason push of some sort but how am I supposed to feel ultimately are the Kings going to even make it into the playoffs and if they do are they going
To make it out of the first round is that success is that failure was this a wasted year should Monty McNair have done more at the trade deadline or this last offseason right all these thoughts that are going through our head that are Mak having us sit here going what am I
Supposed do how am I supposed to feel now that it feels like the king’s chances of improvement and making any kind of playoff run are significantly lower because of Malik Monk’s injury specifically just play through right the only way is through whatever comes in the King’s Way right we’ll just kind of
Hopefully ride through it with them and hopefully they’re punching through not slowly working their way through because they don’t have time to slowly work their way through right they got to punch through the rest of this and they don’t have a schedule that allows them
To work their way through it it’s a good thing they beat Utah tonight because they still have like I said a game with the Clippers they have a game with the Suns they have a game with the the the the uh Thunder they have a game with the
Uh the the Boston Celtics on the road coming up right like there’s no rest for the wicked so I I thought that mindset with Harrison I ended up thinking about it while he was saying it and just nodding my head like this is refreshing this is good to hear it’s
Simple but maybe it’s exactly what fans needed to hear maybe it’s exactly what the Kings need to like simplify things at this point the situation is what it is play through play hard every night try and win one game at a time and see where you’re at and take that challenge
Head on whatever happens to you I just I like that approach from HB but thank goodness the Kings also got some reinforcements tonight Trey L Sasha venkov both back these two guys have been gone for a little while especially Sasha I don’t think Sasha has been available since before the All-Star
Break for the Kings he’s been out for a long long time but Trey Lyles dealt with an injury at the beginning of the Season came back dealt with another injury is now back from that injury trade tonight 11 points three of eight shooting from the field three of five from three-point
Range five rebounds three assists a block shot I’m sorry take that stat line and tell me that’s what you’re getting from Trey Lyles every night for the remainder of this season I don’t have a single thing to complain about there hopefully are going to be big nights
Mixed in there where maybe Trey gets you 15 or 16 points he knocks down like he had three three-pointers tonight it’s hard to ask for more than that especially him going three of five from three-point range that shooting percentage is fantastic from Trey you can see how much that’s been missing the
King second unit has been missing that even with Malik monk being healthy and playing right if this is what you can get from Trey for the remainder of this season and end of the postseason I’m not saying the kings are going to win I’m not saying the Kings aren’t going to
Need more from him at times but if this is what you’re going to get consistently Sacramento I mean that’s pretty much all you can ask for or or it’s close to what you can ask for from Trey and then you have Sasha venkov tonight Five Points
Two of three shooting from the field one of one from three-point range I tweeted out the second he touches the ball he’s going to shoot it because he’s been waiting for a long time to shoot it turns out he got a wide open look in the second half knocked it down immediately
That was during the third quarter also had two rebounds one assist and two steals now I’ve been honest about my feelings towards Sasha venkov and working his way back into this rot and it’s not made me the most popular among some of you King fans who are Die
Hard Sasha venkov fans or or venkov fans that became Kings fans because he came over to the NBA and played for Sacramento or was playing for Sacramento I did not think that there was going to be much opportunity for Sasha and it felt like I was being
Proved right when he played only the final 15 seconds of the first half I was like yeah see Mike’s only going to use him in spot situations where okay it’s the last possession of the half or late in the shot clock Kings need a three
Okay Sasha get out there and be one of our our guys that could potentially hit a shot but in the second half he got in and when he got in for the limited stretch that he played I think he only played nine minutes tonight he played
Well so be it the injury situation I’m it’s never a good thing that the kings are dealing with injuries to Monk and and and uh herder because they’s so that those are two shooting guards starting Caliber shooting guards that are down Keegan Murray got some opportunity to
Step up and play that two guard spot which means there’s going to And live TV whether it’s opening weekend for baseball or the college basketball tournament you’re going to want to have Fire TV plus Fire TV recently created Fire TV channels to deliver a constant supply of the latest videos from your favorite sports brand all for free and

Helping themselves with their win over Utah tonight the Dallas Mavericks destroyed the Houston Rockets big game for Luca donic Golden State Warriors won in s Antonio the Los Angeles Clippers won and the Lakers won as well so all the teams that you were hoping would would would lose none of them did which
Makes tonight’s bounceback win for the kings are getting back on track win for the Kings even more important right because tonight would have been one of those nights where had the Kings lost it would have been a disaster for them to lose to that version of the Jazz at home
And continue their their their struggles but I think to to win this game it it you avoid a situation where of course the Suns create a little more separation the Mavs create even more separation and the Warriors and Clippers sorry the Warriors and Lakers get all the closer kind of sneaking up and
Biting at your heels a little bit so a good win in that sense as well as just what needed to happen here uh tonight in this building and overall it caps off a pretty solid month of March for Sacramento especially defensively Chris Watkins uh tweeted this out and I wanted
To make sure that that I shared this because it it has not ended well and quite frankly it didn’t necessarily start great either but the Kings have had a really solid month of March this is what Chris tweeted out opponents scored more than 115 points per game nine times in
February they scored less than 115 points only three times in February in the month of March opponents scored over 115 points four times the Kings held their opponents under 115 points 12 times this month a fair handful of of games where they held their opponents to to uh
Double digits as well not didn’t get them uh 100 points or more I think there were four games this month that the Kings held their opponents under 100 points which is really really solid now offensively there are still questions uh they got back to 127 points tonight
Which was nice to see the offense kind of get back to that way but overall compared to where they were and what they were doing defensively they figured some things out in this month of March and hopefully they can continue that and carry that through the rest of APR R and
Into uh into the postseason in the plan because I think they’re going to have to lean on their defense maybe even a little more so now than they did in the past because of the absence of Monk and of herder but the Kings did move into the seventh seed tonight they’re
Technically tied with the Phoenix Suns I guess they have the tiebreaker for Phoenix but they have one more game coming up against the Suns it’s like one of the four final games of the season so that’s a really really big game we’ll keep an eye out for that hopefully the
Kings can figure out how to win that big game unlike what they were able to do against Dallas but kings are in seventh as of right now which means if the season ended today they would host the first playin game they would host Phoenix they win that game they secure
The seventh seed they lose that game they take the on the winner of the ninth and 10th game or 10th seed game which is Warriors and Lakers so it’s outside of winning the the final playoff spot and catching the the Mavericks obviously it’s it’s the best spot that that the
Kings could hope to be in and hopefully they’re able to maintain it tomorrow first ever lock on Kings live show I’m so excited about this sack yard Community Tap House uh in downtown Sacramento Gary Gerald legendary Kings radio broadcaster Jerry Reynolds former Kings head coach also le Legendary
