Wolves nuggets on Friday I haven’t done a show since then of course Friday was awesome right the Wolves defense was fantastic Minnesota did enough offensively and it was really um I don’t say it was never in doubt but it was a a really impressive win for Minnesota Friday against Denver this started out
As the opposite it was a pretty rough first quarter the first half in general was disappointing but this one like it really boiled down to and there there’s obviously some some uh minutia we’ll get into here but the headline here is the Wolves just missed a lot of shots I mean Chicago and
Jim Peterson said this a bunch on the B Sports North broadcast like um this is one of those where uh my son asked me hey are the Bulls good and I was like no not really they should be like they should be better than are right there’s obviously issues with their roster
Construction and having um Lonzo ball out doesn’t help at all um but like this team should be better than they are and Jim Peterson talked about quite a bit on the ble Sports North broadcast about they just don’t consistently play hard well they did in this game and it was a
Combination of them playing hard the Wolves missing some open shots and also some really good Defenders checking Anthony Edwards in this game and mostly Alex Caruso who’s an all defensive Team Defender right and obviously Chicago Shot the lights out too which is part of it I actually don’t think Minnesota was
That terrible defensively in this game and we’ll get into all this but the headline here is sometimes in the NBA you just get outshot and it sounds like a copout yeah it’s disappointing they didn’t come out with more effort early but like the reality reality of it
Is the Bulls got hot the Wolves missed some open shots that they normally make I mean Minnesota came in as I think the third best team in the league percentage wise from outside the ark if I’m not mistaken yeah third in the league just a shade under 39% they had that
Performance just a couple games ago I think it was Golden State where they shot over 50% 52% from three and in this game coming in the Bulls were 36% 20th in the league in in three-point percentage uh three-point attempt rate not very high but then this game happens
And the Bulls shoot 29 threes and they make 17 of them just to shade under 59% and sometimes that sort of thing just happens now there was a bit more to it and let’s get into it a little bit The Wolves came out flat um and it it didn’t
Feel like they weren’t trying like it wasn’t like a complete lack of effort but the Bulls were trying harder um and so it was more of a credit to Chicago than anything else although I thought I thought Minnesota’s point of attack defense was pretty bad in the first
Quarter and there were moments recently I felt that way early in the Golden State game um I mean the Bulls should not score 33 points in a quarter against the best defense in the league right Chicago’s essentially a bottom 10 offense they’re right around that uh you
Know 20th best offense in the league Mark as I mentioned they’re not a great three-point shooting team um I mean like they’re obviously you know missing some guy I mean like they had some guys in and out of the lineup um it’s just not a a team that the
Wolves should be allowing 33 points in a quarter to but it’s what happened early I thought the Wolves were a bit flat defensively they weren’t communicating and then because they weren’t getting out in contesting shots the Bulls got really hot from three early and especially Alex Caruso uh was was really
Hot early in this game all eight of his shot attempts were threes and he made seven of them by the way one of them should have been a two uh this is beside the point I think it was second quarter deep left corner and it was very clearly
A two but nobody on the Wolves bench saw it because they were kind of screened out by his body but it never got fixed so what one of his three-point three-pointers made and I had kind of made a note of it I was watching the game behind so put it out on Twitter
Wasn’t going to be helpful I was a little behind on the recording um and uh yeah it was pretty bad though like like basically his heel was on the line like his whole foot was almost over the line and of course they reviewed ants Slater that was correctly ruled a two after
Reviewing it but they never reviewed the Caruso one so if this had been a onepoint game or had been a little bit closer at the end I would have uh would have been a bit more up in arms about it but all that to say Caruso was awesome
In this game on both ends of the floor and the Wolves let him get going early they let Kobe white get going a little bit not exactly as hot as he was late in that game against the Bulls Bulls wolves in Chicago a couple months ago uh six
Weeks ago or so but all that to say the Wolves defense was not crisp early in this game they allowed the Bulls to get some confidence they allowed the Bulls to feel like they could not just hang around but potentially win this game Minnesota was down 11 at the end of the
First quarter second quarter wasn’t a whole lot better defensively I I I felt like it was pretty similar um but the Wolves at least were able to score a little bit themselves the ball movement was pretty good um you know some of the RO guys struggled to shoot in this game
You know Jaden McDaniels didn’t have a great game um Conley didn’t start out great I think he missed his first two or three shots but he was great after that and ant never really got going we’ll talk more about that too but Minnesota like again credit Chicago for playing
Hard like this is a bottom 10 defensive team as well and they were able to kind of get in the jerseys of the wolves and at least make them make them move the ball and credit the Wolves offense in the sense that they did move the ball the ball was snapping around the
Perimeter I thought the Wolves did a good job at ball movement there were some you know sloppy moments certainly too many turnovers and we’ll talk more about that later am my like key overall takeaways or excuse me yeah yeah takeaways for the game the ball move was okay but there
Were a few too many turnovers and just a lot of missed open shots and that was apparent early in the game and then again in the fourth quarter so the Wolves were down 10 at halftime they were down five going to the fourth quarter and and the defense improved
Mightily in the third quarter I thought Minnesota was much more physical as the game were on they did a much better job of of actually staying attached and talking defensively they had some really amazing rotations in that third quarter where they were just like trapping the
Ball in the middle of the floor and recovering to contest slot threes like it was just really impressive to see the Wolves it was that defense on a string like we saw against Denver with frequency in on Friday night um but then in the fourth Minnesota actually took a
Couple of leads they were up I think by as many as three at one point Rudy was awesome late in this game we’ll talk more about more about Rudy in a little bit um but then it was just miss shots again like Minnesota when they were up
Three and then again when they were up one and then when they were down one like there were some possessions where they had multiple cracks at it multiple bites at the Apple Jaden had one possession where he missed two threes and in between there was a missed and
Three um just a lot of missed open jumpers and remember when they shot over 50% a week ago against Golden State they were what 21 or 22 of 50 uh well not not a 50 of 40 I think it was 21 of 40 well they were 11 of 37 in this game
Sometimes the shots fall sometimes they don’t more often than not for Minnesota when they generate the right shots they do fall hence the 39% from three come in into the game as a team the third best Mark in the league as a team percentage wise from outside the arc the Golden
State game was obviously you know above what’s reasonable right like the Wolves aren’t going to shoot 51 52% from three every night they also not going to shoot 30% from three every night like they did in this game outside of Mike Conley nobody had a three-point stroke working
In this game and that is ultimately what killed the Wolves it was the defense early and then it was mis jumpers mostly like um early and then fourth quarter was when it killed them the most because they’d come all the way back they did a lot of good things they played so much
Harder as I said they were more physical in the second half than they were in the first half did all the right things to come back but they couldn’t hit the big shots and most of them were open most of those late threes that they Miss were
Open and that was the biggest problem in this game um so like it’s not and actually I think an had a quote similar after the game he said something like you know we miss shots we’re good something something of that effect was was it what ant said after the game in
The locker room room like that’s 100% true outside of coming out a little bit slow a little bit flat-footed a little bit lack ofical and some rough defense early the rest of the game boils down to just missing open shots I do have some additional key takeaways I want to talk
A little bit about the turnovers and also so Chicago in the open floor and the Wolves lack of ability to take advantage in the Fast Break we’ll talk more Rudy we’ll talk more ant um all that stuff is coming up here next today’s episode of lock down wolves

Locked on sports today brings you can’t miss analysis opinions and news streaming 247 on YouTube or the free Amazon Fire TV channels app part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day okay some additional key takeaways from this game uh shic first of all Chicago did a great job in Anthony
Edwards an had 22 points but it took him 20 shots to get there I thought the only thing he did really well in this game was the intent behind his decision-making he had six turnovers we’ll talk about that but I thought he mostly made the right reads in terms of
Shoot versus pass overall the other thing I thought he did well is he got on the glass he did have 11 boards he actually led the wolves and rebounding in this game and that was great problem is he didn’t shoot the ball well he missed all five of his
Three-point attempts once again I think he was over for last time out against Denver too from outside the arc so the three-point shooting was not good and uh he also turned it over six times he did have five assists but the six turnovers more than negate that he actually the
Second worst plus minus mark on the Wolves if you’re into that sort of thing minus 10 for ants in this game I thought his instincts on shooter pass were good he got into a couple of those situations where he tried to step through and Alex Cru is an incredible Defender and for
Them like as a team Chicago did really well in him um I thought IOD dunu also had some good moments guarding um Anthony Edwards so it was uh it was tough um they just did a good job on Ant and and if ant isn’t shooting isn’t shooting the ball well from
Outside the arc and I think all of his five three-point attempts except maybe one were open too so I mean if he hits two or three of those which like two would be pretty typical for him right if he’s shooting if he’s two of five from
Three or whatever um you know he’s he’s what 36% for the season so that would be close to his average if he shoots two out of five then we’re talking about a game where he’s got 28 points on 20 shots that’s a lot more palatable right
It was just more a matter of missing those shots and then the turnovers especially early in the game he was a major part of the turnover problems early that led to a lot of Chicago fast break points the other way in fact ant had six of the Wolves 14 turnovers so
Nearly half of their turnovers were ant nobody else had more than three for Minnesota so a couple of those passes like he had no business trying to make there were a couple skip passes there was one he tried to fire a a a pass to Rudy down
Low like all five Bulls players had their hands up were watching for the pass and it was going to get intercepted by could have been anybody one through five for the Bulls to intercept the pass like there were some pretty bad decisions when it came to the actual
Pass but I don’t feel like he forced too many bad shots in this game um I thought the decision- making in in regard to the pass shoot balance for ant was good this was combination of bad you know just missing open shots like the Wolves did as a team and like
An’s done for the last couple of games he’s just in a cold streak from Deep um and his Jumper in general but especially outside the ark and then some of those bad turnovers and also Alex cuso and IOD dumo just being really good defensively
Uh so just not a great game for ant it happens still 2211 and five isn’t an awful line right he only got to the line six times and I know the Wolves shot 21 free throws to the Bulls 12 but uh he should have gotten the line more often I
Thought the officiating was not great in this game overall I by the way side note this is actually yeah this is actually one of my takeaways from the game I talked about the bad three-point shooting bad free throw shoting shooting hurt Minnesota again as well they were
Only 14 of 21 from the line you had a couple more of those along the way ant was four of six Rudy was just three of seven Jaden was one of two uh you hadit a couple more along the way and you feel much better about
About you know when this game was close late now of course as a team Rudy’s such a high volume free throw shooter and he really drags them down they’re pretty middle of the pack in terms of overall percentage as a team it’s really just those games there’s
Been a couple here and there where like Nas who’s you know north of 75% of the year has missed some free throws uh you know they’ve had Kyle Anderson guys Jade McDaniels guys who are north of 70% when those guys all Miss on the same night
There’s been a couple of those but other than that like shooting 67% as a team if Rudy going to shoot I mean what Rudy had seven free throw attempts wolves had 21 so he had a third of their three-point attempt or free throw attempts I should
Say in this game um so you know not great but it’s gonna happen if Rudy has such a big chunk of your free throw attempts as a team um all right so great Chicago defense on Ant missed free throws Miss three-pointers fast break issues so I’ve been saying for the last
Two plus weeks since the cat injury the Wolves need to play faster they need to play faster they need to play faster there’s teams they should they can and should push the pace against and they’ve done it to some extent um now I looked at the numbers I think it was Thursday’s
Show so it would have been before the Denver game and before the Chicago game but I thought Minnesota was overall doing a good job pushing the pace against some of these teams post cat injury right so again more chances higher variance without your best shooter without your most efficient
Offensive player you have to do that especially with the Wolves half court offense struggling as much as it has this year now they’ve proven me wrong to the extent that the ball movement has been pretty good overall in the half court postcat injury and that’s not
Blaming cat uh which by the way this is a topic I want to cover probably Tuesday the especially after the Friday game against the Nuggets all of the clamoring of or not clamoring the I talking about how the Wolves offense might be better without cat all this stuff it’s absurd
It really is the numbers don’t back that up and we’ll get more into that but their offensive rating is basically the exact same after the cat injury as it was before they’ve been good but not necessarily better than they were without or than they were with Carl
Towns um anyway back to the original point about fast break points last week I said let’s not push the pace against Detroit right the Pistons want to have as many possessions as possible it worked out because their defense was so suffocating against Denver like that was
A bit of a different game you were never really going to run that much against Denver uh with success and and that was a you know wolves won that one by 13 points Chicago is a team that I would have advocated the Wolves to run against
They’re second to last in Pace um I mean the Wolves actually do play faster than Chicago in general Chicago is not a great defensive team you wouldn’t expect them to uh necessarily turn you over that much although they are actually top even though they’re not a good defensive
Team they’re top 10 in defensive turnover rate it’s a little bit like the Wolves defense from a couple years ago just forcing turnovers trying to get out and run and it’s the only time the Bulls do run well the Wolves got ran out of the gym in this game Chicago had a crazy
Rate of scoring after wolves turnovers early in the game but when it was all said and done Chicago had 19 fast break points in this game Minnesota had only seven there were minus 12 in Fast Break points and a ton of that was early in the game some of these live ball ant
Turnovers where he just threw it away in the middle of the floor it was far from the only type of turnover they had but it helped fuel um some of these easy points to the paint early and Rudy dominated in the half court in the paint right Andre Drummond was great the first
Time around for the Bulls against Minnesota he started in that game he only played 17 minutes in this one uh he did have nine boards but like it wasn’t a like Rudy dominated in the paint especially in the second half but the wolves are only a plus 10 in points in the paint
Because well partly because of all the fouls that Rudy Drew um in this game he got to line seven times but also because early in the game Chicago was getting easy layups and dunks in transition some three-pointers generated out of that too it was just the turnovers leading to
Chicago’s fast break points and then on the flip side Chicago actually turned it over two more times in Minnesota in this game 16 turnovers for Chicago to two for Minnesota but the Wolves didn’t capitalize they didn’t run quite enough in this game and this is a continuing theme for
Minnesota they just prefer to slow the pace almost all the time and I’m sure it kills Chris Finch at times you can see him employing them to play faster and this is one of those games where like hey they’re missing open shots they’re not getting a ton of calls in the paint
The the Wolves aren’t generate easier shots in transition get out in transition and try and score against you know a defense that’s not set um and you know get to the rim score that way force the issue in terms of fouls and Minnesota didn’t do that very well I
Think they needed to play a little bit faster that would have helped them in this game and it would have you know kept them closer earlier and giving them a shot you know down the stretch here all right let’s close the show by doing individual studs and Duds we’ll talk a
Little bit more about Rudy and others and uh that’s how we’ll close out today today’s episode of locky wolves is brought To Us by our friends at Amazon Fire TV I have an Amazon Fire TV like a TV where it’s the face for the the smart

TV all right let’s close here by talking individual studs and Duds for the Wolves Mike Conley was probably the H either Mike or Rudy was the best overall player on the floor for the game uh they’re both studs so I don’t care who you want to pick as the best of the game
But they were the Wolves two best players we’ll say it that way Mike had 19 points seven assists four steals in this game seven of 11 shooting five of nine outside the arc like I said earlier I think he missed his first two three-point attempts and then went like
Five of seven the rest of the way he might have missed his first three uh only one turnover he also only played 29 minutes by the way um he subbed out pretty early in the first quarter I don’t know if this is just a conscious effort to manage those minutes also two
Of the other four bench guys see rotation minutes are also point guards and Monte Morris and Jordan mlin like in this you know injured cat phase the wolves are in like this is now the rotation the guys coming off the bench are small because Nas is starting alongside Rudy so you’re Kyle Anderson’s
The only non-g guard coming off the bench for Minnesota so you’re GNA see maybe a few more a few less minutes for Mike Conley but he was actually really good in this game and we could nitpick the rotations a little I’m not saying they lost because Mike connley only
Played 29 minutes because I thought both Monte Morris and Jordan mcclaflin were fine uh by the way Jordan mcclin was the only wolves player to have a positive plus minus in this game he was a plus eight in 14 minutes nobody else was better than a minus two in this game for
Minnesota and I mentioned this earlier like ant was a minus 10 this is like I I occasionally in passing we’ll say like hey don’t put too much stock into individual players single game you know plus minus for a single game box score plus minus right it’s it’s noisy there’s a lot of factors
That play into it it’s not the same as onoff numbers for a season right or over a longer period of time I would not read too much into ants minus 10 however when an entire team is negative except one player that tells you those Jordan mcgoffin minutes were likely very good
If he was a plus eight and nobody else was better than a minus two that’s more enlightening to me than ant being a minus 10 in a game that they lost by eight right ant being a minus 10 doesn’t mean they lost because of ant Kyle
Anderson being a minus 12 in a game they lost by eight doesn’t mean they lost because of Kyle Anderson but Jordan moffam being a plus eight and none of his teammates turning in a positive plus minus is somewhat enlightening right it tells us that those Jordan MCA minutes
Were positive literally okay so I thought he was good but he’s not necessarily A stud he only played 14 minutes he didn’t score you know whatever Conley the point here is Conley was 197 and four seven of 11 shooting five of nine outside the Arc was really
Good in this game Rudy goar also really good 19 and 10 a perfect eight of eight for the floor he was only three of seven at the line which did hurt he had that big three-point play late I think he had the bucket that put them up one and then
He missed the and one free throw that would have put them up two they eventually led by three but that was a big Miss free throw at that juncture in the game with what four five minutes left on the clock in the fourth quarter so 19 and 10 eight of eight shooting
Three of seven at the line two steals one block one assist only one turnover for Rudy played a team High 38 minutes in this game again no backup center because Nas is starting so unless you’re going to play Luca Garza which you’re not and it wouldn’t have made sense in
This game against Chicago uh with with the bulls personel um but with no cat Rudy’s gonna play more and he has been as and he’s still got the rib issue like really good game from Rudy I thought he was great um did a really good job
Against overall I mean he got out and guarded vich okay on the perimeter I mean vuvi hit a couple of Threes but like he’s not been a world beater outside the ark this season so I didn’t really have a problem with how Rudy defended in this game game either I
Thought he was fairly mobile overall I don’t really have any other studs like I talked about mlin was fine like Monte Morris was fine ant had moments um I don’t know that’s kind of it for studs it’s really just Rudy and uh and Mike I mean the the offense was
Spotty the defense was spotty like that’s kind of it in terms of Duds this is also a tough one and like Jaden had not a great game Nas was really inconsist I hate to give Nas a dud he still turned in a 144 and three but like when the
Wolves struggle to score and they’re not making shots from the outside and they only score 101 for the game Nas is one of those guys without carony towns on the floor that needs to step up so I guess I’d have to say Nas I mean 14 points four assists three turnovers also
For Nas five of 14 shooting so barely over 30% from outside the or overall for for the game three of nine from outside the ark he just didn’t do enough other stuff right like ant does some other stuff he defended well um Jaden was fine defensively in this game I thought
Overall I just you need a little bit more out of Nas If you’re going to win without carony towns in a game where overall as a team you’re just missing open jumpers other guys had some pretty you know actually I’ll give nier Walker had dud too he was one of five outside the
Arc missed a couple of open threes down the stretch that would have been huge to make and would have kept the Wolves you know or got drawn the Wolves closer and extended their lead he had one of those Miss threes and that late like flurry of Miss threes in the fourth quarter Ander
To the Wolves shooting just 11 of 37 sub 30% on three-pointers for the game as a team so Duds are Nas andil Alexander Walker studs are Rudy goar and Mike connley all right that’s all on this game again I’ll go back to where I started lots of Miss threes sluggish
Start to the game overall Miss threes Miss free throws and good defense from Chicago credit where credits due these games happen the problem though is Oklahoma City and Denver both won the Wolves went from first to third in the Western Conference now yes they likely will have tiebreakers over both of them
But their schedule is tougher than Denver’s the rest this way the rest of the way they get a back toback this week Minnesota has Houston and Toronto Tuesday Wednesday at home they go on the road to take on the Suns Friday night uh and then they’re at the road at the
Lakers on Sunday next week so it’s a really difficult week Rockets Raptors at home on and Raptors is a second night of a back toback Suns Lakers over the weekend and then the season ends they just have four more games after that with Wizards nuggets Hawks Suns and the
Season’s over um so not a whole lot of time to regain that ground they lost today but that’s how quickly it flips right they jumped into first after Friday’s win they fell to third after Sunday’s loss so we’ll see what happens here upcoming we’ll of course uh preview
The Rockets game on tomorrow’s show on Tuesday’s show and again we’ll talk a little bit more about why the offense is not better with carony towns which feels like a crazy thing to have to talk about but hey it’s a Hot Topic and I’ll explain why I disagree with anybody who

The Minnesota Timberwolves had their four-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Chicago Bulls. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) dissects the shaky start to the game, plus the Wolves’ 16-point comeback despite a team-wide cold shooting performance and another tough shooting night for Anthony Edwards.
