Minnesota Timberwolves bench, Naz Reid propel win over Houston Rockets

Hello and welcome into another episode of lockdown wolves this is the postgame podcast from an impressive Tim rolles win over the Houston Rockets we’ll talk about a well-rounded performance and especially how impressive the bench was in this in this win Kyle Anderson Jordan mlin Nas Reed who’s a starter now but

The bench plus Nas is really what propelled this win we’ll break the whole thing down welcome in you are locked on wolves you are locked on Timberwolves your daily Minnesota Timberwolves podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello and welcome to the lockdown

Wolves podcast part of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day my name is Ben Beacon I’m the host of lockdown wolves happy Wednesday every body happy hump day and it’s a victory Wednesday after an impressive Wolves win over the rockets on Tuesday night this is the postgame pod lots to break down

Here today it just across the board awesome bench performances for the Wolves plus some big NS rud moments uh lots lots like I said lots to get to so that’s what we’ll do today um a fun win for the Wolves off the top of big thank you for making lockdown wolves your

Again so be sure to check that out on the lockdown Sports Minnesota YouTube channel or again if you can’t do it live after the game catch the audio right here on lockon wolves all right so this was an important game for Minnesota I want to

Call it a big game I don’t oversell it but I think it was important after a really dis disappointing loss to the Bulls the Wolves couldn’t necessarily afford to lose another game at home they’ve got a worse home record by a couple of games than the other two top

Seeds in the west um two of the top three in Denver and OKC so um like it was important for the Wolves to show up in this game and they did it just took them a little while to do it similar to the starts of recent games the wolves

Have had it was just a sluggish first quarter Minnesota scored just 16 points in the first quarter the defense was okay um but the TR transition defense the offense was sloppy there were turnovers and the transition defense was horrible once again a second straight game The Wolves gave up 20 plus fast

Break points we’ll talk a little bit uh to an opponent talk a little bit more about that here in a little bit but Minnesota was down seven going to the second quarter and that’s kind of where I want to focus a lot of our time here today was just how impressive and

Dominant that second quarter was for Minnesota getting out scored 2316 in the first frame second quarter Minnesota outscores the Rockets 30 to 22 so they were great on both sides of the floor and there’s a lot like we could talk about this thing in a lot of different directions and and Anthony

Edwards by the way wasn’t really part of any of this in the first half he had just two points at halftime he was scoreless for a long time I don’t think he made a shot from the field in the first half I think his only points were

Free throws and uh we’ll talk more about ant later too and that was kind of the story of his game was just the free throws um and then obviously the dunk in the fourth quarter that no doubt you’ve seen by now but the second quarter was so much about the bench unit just

Deciding to dominate and nzri I should say uh in fact there was a stretch of the second quarter from a little bit past the halfway point in the quarter for like the next five plus minutes the timber scored 19 points and 17 of them were Jordan mcgoffin and Nas

Reed 17 of them were Jordan mcgoffin and Nas Reed I think jck had eight and Nas had nine over that stretch but they all of the points were m glofin and Nas also in the second quarter uh Kyle Anderson who is a bench a member of the bench

Unit right now he had seven assists and no turnovers in the second quarter alone pitched in a couple of buckets as well was active on the glass in other categories we’ll talk more about him too but the second quarter was all about Nas and mlin scoring and um Kyle

Anderson and uh um I guess it really was those three I mean those are the three that that really kind of stood out again Nas and mlin scoring slow-mo doing a little bit of everything else and it was in a variety of ways too both of those

Guys were hitting threes and twos both Nas and mlin um and then it it put the Wolves up what they were down by seven at the end of the first quarter they were actually up nine at halftime and then in the second half the T rolles I should also

Say by the way early in the second quarter Minnesota Trail by as many as 11 points late third early fourth quarter the Wolves built a lead up to 15 points and a lot of that was with these dual point guard lineups it was Mike Conley and Monte Morris it was brief Monte

Morris during mcin minutes and then it was mlin and Mike Conley in fact notable Mike connley excuse me Jordan mcclaflin played 18 minutes in this game Monte Morris only played 10 uh they they’ve both been effective but obviously Jordan mcgloin’s been so hot from outside the arc you can’t blame Chris Fitch for

Giving him 18 minutes I mean like he was fantastic uh we’ll talk more about mofin later too but the point here is the bench unit in the second quarter plus Nas was awesome helped the Wolves build this lead then they start using these dual point guard lineups and

Houston it’s funny because Houston wants to play small especially without upper and shenon like they’re very comfortable playing small they start a small lineup they jock land’s like the only really true like I don’t want to say traditional but like true big that they even have right that that sees significant

Minutes so it makes sense that they were interested in in in playing small and instead of the Wolves just kind of not like the wolves have without Carlon towns the Wolves aren’t going to play Massive right like they weren’t going to like I mean it was Nas and Rudy right

Like the wolves are comfortable playing small at this point too and they did and it worked they played multiple point guards along with Kyle Anderson who’s essentially a big point guard and still manag to outrebound Houston by two they still managed to outscore them in the paint barely but by six both categories

You’d think Minnesota would dominate Houston with Noel P shenon but with no Carlon towns and playing small overall um you know it makes sense that that these categories are at least competitive the difference though is that well the Wolves the Wolves still won those categories the Wolves won the

Rebounding category they won the fast uh excuse me uh points in the paint category they out free throwed Houston and they also shot the ball much more efficiently from outside the arc and that’s a recipe for a win and you can you can handle just having those slim

Margins in terms of paint points and rebounding and that’s exactly what happened in this game um I thought that as the game wore on in the second half Chris fit really nailed it with his rotations and also the defensive scheme they tried a couple different things in

This game um I want to shout out and we’ll get back to this too but I want to shout out Jade McDaniels for the job he did on uh on Jaylen green and Jaylen green was good he had 26 points but it took him 22 shots to do it he also

Turned it over five times was just two of 11 on three-point shots so jayen green was eight of 11 on twos and two of 11 on threes and that’s the length and activity of Jade MC that bothered him and I’ve I don’t say criticized but I pointed out games here recently where I

Thought Jade McDaniels hasn’t been as good defensively he was really good in this game and offensively doesn’t jump off the page what Jaden did but he was very good on defense and that was important for the wolves in this game he basically he was a big part of bothering

The Rockets into just 14 of 48 on Threes And by the way like I think three of Fred vet’s four made threes were in the final minutes when Houston came all the way down you know from 15 down all the way back to within one a couple of

Different times late in the fourth quarter so obviously those threes mattered I’m not saying that they didn’t but like for most of the game they were shooting sub 25% on threes Houston was so the length of McDaniels and activity of McDaniels de Alexander Walker Mike Conley Anthony Edwards

Really bothered Houston into this 29% shooting from Deep also bothered them into 14 turnovers on the night and um The Wolves aggressive switching that they did kind of in the middle of the the game like they switched their coverages a couple different times but the switching that they did I thought

Was really effective in this game as well I want to get into a couple of additional key takeaways that I have from this one I I want to talk we already did talk some lineups a little bit I want to talk ant I want to talk

About the concerns I have um coming out of this game for Minnesota we’ll look at a couple other box score things and then we’ll close as we always do with individual studs and Duds it’s all coming up here next today’s episode of lockdown wolves is brought to Aspire friends over at

So we talked about rotations we talked about multiple point guard lineups we talked about Kyle Anderson being able to play the well actually I didn’t specifically talk about this but along with playing multiple point guards a lot of these lineups included Nik Alexander Walker or jayen McDaniels that allows

Kyle Anderson to play the four uh effectively or literally just play the four which he’s so much more comfortable doing and it was one of my concerns coming into the season was with the money given to Nas and a full season of Rudy and Cat hopefully and they ended up

Playing close to a full season together both the starting lineup Kyle Anderson had to play the three and remember in Memphis he played almost exclusively the four and at times small ball five toward the end of his career in Memphis and he spent almost exclusively uh his minutes at the four

Last year for Minnesota and sure enough he was pretty uncomfortable with the three for the first part of the Season there were some other factors at play obviously he shot the three much better last year and his confidence completely went away there and then there was also all the trade

Rumor stuff that was floating around not that there was anything tangible but everyone talked about slowmo being traded and it’s a bit of a a vicious cycle where he thinks about it he plays worst player you know fans people on the internet want him to be traded more he

Hears the the the clamoring for him to be traded even more because it’s there’s more talk about it because he’s struggling that sort of thing happened for slowmo now he’s back to playing significant minutes at the four and he’s just more comfortable doing that essentially a point power forward in a

Way and he scored in this game too um Kyle Anderson in his own unique way he had 13 points I think four of them were in the second and most of the rest of them were in the third quarter uh we’ll talk more about him and studs and

Duds but he was really good and was a big part of those small lineups because if he doesn’t play well in those small lineups if he’s not playing well not hitting shots Etc it won’t work but he would rebounded the basketball well enough and did enough other things not

Necessarily shooting from Deep although he did hit a three in this game he did enough other things well that it was a palatable lineup for Finch to have out there um one of the problems early in this game was fast break points for Houston and ultimately it was a problem for the

Game Houston ended up with uh well actually well yeah you could look at it either way um Houston had 22 fast break points they also scored 27 points off of Minnesota turnovers now there’s obviously a lot of overlap there right like a lot of these fast break points

Are coming because of turnovers um so the Wolves gave up 27 points off of turnovers off of of 18 team turnovers so first of all turnovers are way too high I just talked on yesterday’s show Tuesday’s show about how the turnover rate as a team has gone way down the

Wolves were actually coming into this game top five in the league over their last 12 games with the marker of when Carlton towns was out with the miniscus injury the 12 games since those were eight and four they were fourth best in the league in turnover eight now it wasn’t pretty

The other day against H uh excuse me Chicago it wasn’t pretty in this game turnover wise for Minnesota either 18 team turnovers leading 27 Rockets points two straight games Minnesota’s given up 20 or more points off turn or more than 20 points I should say off turnovers to an

Opponent that continues to be a problem the transition defense that was so good early in the season for Minnesota and of course last year was terrible so good early in the season it struggled the last couple times out and I don’t know that that’s anything more than it being

Fluky like I there’s other factors at play right it’s not simply now all of a sudden they’re bad again it’s just something to keep an eye on terminals cannot have a transition defense that shoty as we move into the playoffs the last key takeaway before we get to

Individual studs and Duds is the bench performance overall and of course we’ll talk more about some of these individual players but as a bench the tibl bench Shot 14 of 21 From the Bench which is nuts 14 to 21 that’s 67% from outside the ark Kyle Anderson

Was six of eight Jordan McGloin is four of seven n Alexander Walker is three of three and Monte Morris is one of three so what I say 14 of 21 overall and five of eight from outside the arc for the bench unit also combining the bench units assists and

Turnovers 17 assists to three turnovers for the Tim rolles bench that’s insane I’ll repeat that 17 assists to three turnovers 14 of 21 shooting and five of eight on three-pointers for the Timberwolves bench really really strong numbers and um important because so much of that came in the second quarter as we talked

About already Kyle Anderson Jordan mcclin starting the second quarter but also the third quarter into the fourth quarter which of course early fourth is when Anthony Edwards gets his rest um his second half rest and the wolves like the bench was awesome um and it was

It was timely as well all right um I guess I do have a couple more things before I get to before I get to stunts and Duds I mentioned the defense already that the Wolves tried some different stuff Rudy goar was good in this game um

He had a double double had 12 and 14 the only double double on the Wolves nobody else had more than six boards for Minnesota but it wasn’t like an overwhelmingly dominant game there were a couple of really nice plays he had two blocks I felt like he could have had a

Couple more but there were some tough tough foul call calls against him he had the alleyoop where ant kind of threw it to him at the last second and Rudy had to reach down and kind of threw it up and over the rim um that was impressive

There were some moments where he just simply overpowered a really diminutive Houston front line and those moments were all really good uh I thought he did mostly what he had to do I talked about on Tuesday’s show how important it was for Minnesota to control the paint

Because of the size Advantage but the Wolves also weren’t going to and this is smart they weren’t going to just Force the ball into Rudy and you know try and figure it out there was a period of time in the game where there was throwing a

Ton of lobs but it wasn’t it wasn’t crazy it wasn’t you know beyond what they should have been doing it was just a really solid strong um exactly what you need typ performance from Rudy goar and uh it worked out for the wolves in this one I want to close the show by

Looking at individual studs and Duds I’ve already said Rudy won’t be on that list but I thought he played well I’m going to I’m going to I may still go for studs in this game um because it’s it’s a real tough one so we’ll do that here next and you

Know I’ll spend a little bit of time on a couple of these guys and really kind of underscore how good they were in this game so we’ll do all that coming up here next today’s episode of lock out wolves is brought To Us by our friends at

You haven’t checked out Fire TV channels you should trust me to learn more visit www.amazon.com loock onfire TV again amazon.com locked onire TV all right individual studs and Duds from this one for Minnesota number one for me has to be Kyle Anderson I thought he was the best all-around player maybe most important

Player for the wolves in this game 13 points nine assists six rebounds two steals two blocks for Kyle Anderson six of eight shooting one of two on threes and he almost actually this was what the buzzer of the first quarter slow-mo got a pass for Monte Morris in the right

Slot and actually switched a deep three like not a quarter three a deep three from the wing but it was like two10 of a second after the buzzer because it was slow release like a normal NBA players release shot would have been off in time

But it took him so long to load it that the shot didn’t count so he was almost two or three from outside the arc so it’s hard to do much better than a 13962 and two line so four stocks together two Steals and two blocks nine assists to

Just two turnovers six rebounds which tied for second on the team and we already talked a lot about overall what he brought to the table I talked about his four assists excuse me seven assists in the second quarter to zero turnover three of his six rebounds and three of

His four stocks came in the second quarter as well so um extremely well-rounded game for Kyle Anderson and he continues to do exactly what the Wolves need him to do if they’re going to hang on to a top call it top two spot in the west I’m also going to go with

Jordan mcgoffin is one of my studs he had 11 and seven in this game 11. seven assists four of seven shooting three of four outside the arc yet another one of those no look uh you know the passes he used to do with D’Angelo Russell does

Him now with Kyle Anderson where um you know it’s kind of an unspoken like hey I’m going to cut to the basket you’re going to throw me a blind pass on the money like a quarterback in the NFL and I’m gonna catch it with late hands so

They don’t know I’m doing you know same thing that receivers do in football too right late hands so I’m G to catch it and then I’m gonna lay it up in in and get a you know a layup before these guys even turn their head they had one of

Those in this game too it was is only two-point make so um oh I should also mention mcgloin’s a plus 17 in this game only one other guy from Minnesota was plus double digits and that was Jaden McDaniels you already talked about being really solid defensively in this game

And this is the second straight game what was the Jade McDaniels plus minus the other night it was like over 20 in a game that they lost or something crazy I might be exaggerating a little but that is when the single game individual player uh plus minus matters to me a

Little bit more when it is so different than everyone else on the team and in this case Four Points better than McDaniels and you know mlfa was plus 17 McDaniels was plus 13 nobody else on the team was better than a plus eight so it

Goes I I think that that could give us a sense for just how impactful an individual player was to his team’s performance it’s not super clean it’s not the end all be by end all be by any means not even close but I think in this

Case it is it is interesting so slow-mo and Jord mofin both off the bench both get studs in this game my third one I kind of waffled between Nas Reed and Anthony Edwards I’m going to go Nas because Nas’s first half and especially second quarter was so good 25 points on

10 of 17 three of five outside the arc because Houston kept forgetting to guard him uh deep two of two from the line six boards two assists two Steals and a block Nas did have three turnovers but um I thought it was a really strong NZ Reed performance and the Wolves probably

Aren’t weren’t as close as they were at the end of the first quarter frankly if it wasn’t for Nas he had a couple of tough shots in the paint early in this game too um Anthony Edwards was good his he’s missed his last 21 three-pointers I believe and

You know five of 10 on twos o of six on threes the jumper is not there hit a couple of mid-range against the Bulls I’m not even sure he hit any shots outside the paint at all in this game I don’t think he did he only made five tws

Period um I’m actually gonna pull it up real quick but he only made five tws period so I don’t think he made yeah I know he didn’t make any shots outside the paint so he was 0 of six on threes he missed all three of his non-paint

Twos as well so he was 0 of nine outside the paint was Anthony Edwards and um what five of seven inside the paint he was also a perfect 11 of 11 at the free throw line which was good to see because he’s had some struggles there relatively speaking but some struggles

There here of late five boards three assists two steals three turnovers for an but uh those 21 points on 16 shots so much damage done at the free throw line for Anthony Edwards I thought it was a good all around performance no Duds in this game Monte Morris was quiet but

Fine Jay mcdel was great defensively cley was good too 14 six and three steals in this game he did have uncharacteristically four turnovers for Mike Conley but a good performance nonetheless um so no Duds for me no Duds my studs are Nas Kyle Anderson Jord mofin in no particular order and we

Talked already about the bench like Alexander Walker was good ant was good as obviously a starter Conley was good uh we talked about coar just a really fun game for being down seven at the end of the first quarter looking not completely lifeless but a little a

Little bit lifeless if that’s a thing the Wolves really flipped this game on its head in the second quarter and were really impressive from you know from that point forward in this game all right the wolves are back at it again tonight against the Toronto Raptors of course we haven’t seen

Toronto since the first game of the season when the wolves lost in Toronto by I don’t know both teams were in the 90s it was like 9794 or something like that now while Houston had won what 10 straight before losing to Dallas last time out Toronto’s now lost 14 games in

A row after losing to the Lakers by 17 points on Tuesday night so Toronto’s also on the second night of a back-to-back traveling into Minnesota it is a game that we should absolutely win there’s no question about it it still makes me a little nervous in

Terms of it being a TR TR game for Minnesota because you know the Houston game was a little bit hard fought it’s a team that’s fighting for their playoff lives and then after the Raptors game the wolves go to Phoenix where they got crushed the Wolves got crushed in

Phoenix back in November and obviously Phoenix is fighting for playoff seaing as well so hopefully the Wolves can lock into this Raptors game and not get caught up in in how easy it easy is not the right word but how winnable of a game it really is when you know for

Again a team that’s lost 14 straight games Toronto has they’ve lost 14 straight they’re not actually that bad they’ve lost some tough close ones but it’s absolutely a game that the Wolves should win um the line for this one is wolves by 15 and a half at home

Against Toronto which is such an aggressive line you very rarely are going to see NBA lines that high like north of 15 points so I would tread carefully with that remember the line before wolves Rockets was eight and half and I said I thought it was a little

High the Wolves ended up winning by seven okay so we’ll see with this one I feel the same way I think the Wolves win and probably win easily but 15 and a half is a lot of points this feels like a nine to 11 Point win for Minnesota um

And and I mean we’ll see I should also say through play on Tuesday the Timberwolves are tied for second in the western conference with the tiebreaker over OKC so if the season ended today the Wolves would get the two seed and would play the the um what the

Winner of the playin I guess Tech not technically they would play the winner of the playin so Kings Suns Lakers Warriors would be the four teams in the playin um Denver won a tough game against San Antonio a short-handed OKC team lost to a Joel embiid not less full I don’t know the

Joel and be’s a return for Philly and they held on to beat OKC in Philly so um again the wolves are half game behind Denver tied in the L column one game back in the win column so half game back tied with OKC but they currently have

The tiebreaker over both Denver and OKC this season um so all that to say uh standings are obviously a hot button issue at this time of year we talked about the Raptors game Wednesday then looking ahead to Phoenix on Friday night and then Sunday night La so we’re on a

Every other day Rhythm here for about the next week or so uh for the Wolves all right reminder about the postcast which you’ll be able to see live on lockdown Sports Minnesota on YouTube immediately following wolves Raptors on Wednesday night so around 10 pm Central
