That contest I think there’s 11 or 12 names on the injury report again maybe you can help us with that to Michael uh so maybe we can react to some of that towards the end of the show if that’s okay but I do think you know because of

The weight of the weekend and Mark Gasol’s significance to the franchise being honored on Saturday night uh I thought today could be more of a marasol heavy program and and we’ll start with your take on this question who is this Grizzly’s he is marol because one of my

Favorite things about watching Mark to Michel was how he was so unique right there were not many guys that played the game of basketball like him even when comparing him to his brother pal right pal was a pretty different basketball player yeah Mark was so obviously comparison even though it is the thief

Of Joy it’s something that all of us do and we look at this current version of the Grizzlies compare it to the grit and grind era we’re all guilty of it or at least I am and you you look at how the team wins how the team competes

Obviously there’s a lot of differences do you see anybody on this current iteration of the Grizzlies that reminds you of a uh soon Tobe retired number Legend in Grizzly’s lower marcool check out my answer for this one Joe I’m gonna say do actually okay and it’s Desmond Bank interesting that’s

That’s that’s my answer for this one uh he’s never goingon to be the guy who gets you know all of the Fanfare right sort of like you know Mark kind of didn’t uh during those days but uh he’s going to be a very decorated player he’s

Probably gon to set a bunch of Records here with three-pointers and things like that uh he’s very serious about the community work he you know goes back to Richmond Indiana every summer does does his big thing there he said eventually he wants to do the same thing in Memphis

So I’m sure uh now that he’s he’s about to get those big bucks next year probably gonna see some more see some more of that in Memphis but yeah on on on more of a serious scale too like he feels like he’s also a voice like I’ll

Talk more about it in the second segment we talk about our memories there’s one memory I have in particular where Mark gasa stood up for one of his teammates and uh that’s kind of the guy that Desmond B is you know he he’s one where if if something needs to be said you

Know that’s one of the guys that will say it despite uh who’s been here longer than him who’s been here uh you know less years than him who’s older than him who’s younger than him doesn’t really matter if it needs to be said Desmond Bane doesn’t mind saying it uh I think

All of those are traits of you know similarity again not the most athletic dude uh gets his job done uh serious about the community aspect of it and and never going to get the most Fan Fair you know uh but the last part of it is the connector

Part that’s the big Desmond m is the connector to this Grizzlies core johnar heck of a player jiren Jackson Jr heck of a player the NBA today is all about spacing things like that the Grizzlies without Desmond Bane look worse to me and this is just my opinion

Uh over over the history I’m not just take taken out this season prettyy much because of everything that’s been around it but if you go to the two years prior the Grizzlies looked worse without Desmond ban then when they would Miss jiren Jackson Jr or when they would miss

J Morant now this season again there were they were not just missing JN Morant they were missing a whole bunch of other things and so I’m taking this season pretty much out of the equation for that but if you go back to the last two years when they were 50 win team uh

They were better without Jah than they were without Dez and it’s because of the connector part of it uh he’s the three-point shooter who allows jiren and jaw to kind of dominate in the paint uh again I always go back to that Timberwolf series because it just so blatantly obvious uh when the

Timberwolves said we’re gonna put four guys in the paint and we’re not gonna let J beat us if you don’t have a Desmond ban the Grizzlies are upset in the first round in that series he is the connector and I think that’s the similarities that he has to marasol

Marasol being that big who me and you talked about it through Tex a little bit who was a little bit passive because you had Zack Randolph who was more that score you kind of needed him in a way to be you know that type of big to balance

Things out and I think it’s the same way with Jah and Desmond Bane from the standpoint of Jah a couple years ago was at the top of the league and points in the paint per game now you have that three-point shooter who’s shooting over 40% every single season of his NBA

Career to balance it out it kind of reminds me of that uh front Court Duo I love that comparison I think that’s awesome I think got the step from Joe yeah I think that jiren Jackson Jr is a two-way player that’s a pretty clear obvious one as well but I like the Bane

Comp because of that connector piece that that’s exactly what I would I would have said as well and and you put it really well the only thing I’ll add is when you watch jiren and jaw play they don’t necessarily mesh as well as you would think they would right like their

Numbers the pick and roll game it’s not like exactly negative per se but when you think of you know Jamal Murray and Nicola yic right or Max and ID who the Grizzlies might see yeah on Saturday night you you don’t think of jiren and John that way but Bane Plays well with

Both of those guys and Mark did the same for Conley Rand right Mark played great with Mike Conley the two-man game was a beautiful thing to see and even though they were two legitimate true bigs Mark and Zach played really well together too so the connection is not just through

Those other guys it’s also to them in Twan situations where their games mesh and meld and mold really nicely uh I I like the Bane comparison and I do think that you know Mark being willing to say and do what needs to be done you know you mentioned you and I talking throughout

The week about Mark you know there were times where he wouldn’t take the shot because he thought he was looking for a better shot for someone else when the best opportunity for a score in that individual possession was his own shot he was almost he was almost uh passive

To a fault at times and you know Dez isn’t necessarily of that same ilk but I see where that connection could come from and then one last thing that I think is an interesting connection there is you know Bane I feel like Bane is more appreciated in Memphis and then

Nationally I don’t think he gets the publicity that he should get you know the contract extension is a great example of that who the hell you remember how people reacted to that everybody in Memphis was like what are you talking about this guy guy very clearly deserves this money for marasol

Because of that passiveness or perceived passiveness at times it was inverted like Mark was appreciated more nationally I think than he was in Memphis sometimes the defensive player of the year and people you know that was it was either him or Lebron That season if you don’t remember and you know

People were like oh it should obviously be LeBron look at all these amazing things he does but it was National pundits and bloggers and analysts that were like you need to watch the Grizzlies play like they’re the best defense in the league and gasal is the

Catalyst for it he was one of those first guys or maybe not first guy uh but he was somebody that you know memphian love don’t get me wrong but you know when you talk about who the greatest Grizzly of all time is yeah people are usually going to say Zack Randolph

They’re not going to say Marc assol whereas if you ask that question nationally I think people would say marcool and not Zack Randolph and you know that that’s kind of I like to call him the most decorated because of the All-Star appearances the defensive player of the year Trophy and and and

That was until John marant now right you could probably argue jaw’s already that but I agree with you I I think that’s a better way to describe it let us know what you think in the comments if you like our Bane comparison maybe you lean closer to that jiren Jackson Jr comp I

Mentioned briefly but I I think I’m with I’m with de Michel I really like the Desmond Bane comp for Mark in terms of modern Grizzlies who best emulate what Mark brought to the table speaking of that uh Gasol bringing to the table we’re going to reflect on Mark’s career

Towards the end of the show the home and home back to back Saturdays the main event Philadelphia 76ers I do believe it’s the 76ers right yeah y so the Philadelphia 76ers not playing at home because WWE has invaded Philadelphia I’m GNA talk about WrestleMania several times I apologize in advance I’m just so

Excited um but anyway Philly not at WrestleMania like me um but they will be in Memphis for marcell’s retirement the Grizzlies play the Pistons tonight we’ll talk about why I can’t imagine to Michael if you can’t say it I understand because of your official standing I am

Not excited at all like like I will go back and watch the 76ers game I will not watch the Pistons game for Friday and if you do you get extra credit points as a fan of the Memphis Grizzlies I’ll give you those Grizzlies you’re real die hard

Yeah that and we’ll talk about why that is later on but again we’re going to keep this marasol theme and the trip down memory Lane you know I was talking I’ve referenced Parker Fleming a lot uh he and I and Shan Coleman former lock down Grizzlies host we have a group chat

You know other folks like to talk about their group chats I feel like our group chat is pretty special and you know in our conversation this week we were talking about different memories you know the Western Conference Finals run Mark had a really impressive first

Playoff game I think it was like 249 and seven line something like that um the big game-winning shot in 2017 that that raging against the dying of the light you know I remember writing an article about that when the time was there you know there’s just so many wonderful

Things that Mark was connected to on the court off the court during his time in Memphis over a decade right as a member of the franchise and then obviously even before that with his brother po Mark grew up in Memphis went to high school in Memphis uh lots of uh interesting

Pieces of the gasal story go through Mark when it comes to the Grizzlies what are some memories for for you to Michael of what marasol was not just to the Grizzlies maybe but to the city at large yeah I mean a lot of things come

To mind um but I’m gonna start with the one that I I kind of alluded to a little bit earlier when I when I said uh talked about you know him standing up for teammates uh Joe do you remember once upon a time Mike Conley was in trade

Talks oh yeah people hated mik Conley yeah and and wasn’t there a trade rumor for like God who was it it was really bad night it actually I’m talking at this point yeah like 089 way like KY lry when KY lry and and and that’s kind of there’s a there’s

Something to that like with Mike connley and KY Lowry being on the team at the same time and both of them still playing prominent roles in the NBA today uh more than 15 years later it’s kind of cool but at the end of the day uh Mike Conley

Was involved in trade talks at that time uh think probably as much or maybe even more than Kyle Larry as the Grizzlies mean was pretty obvious they were gonna have to choose one of those guys and marasol I think uh he he went to the Commercial Appeal beat writer at that

Time uh Ron Tillery and you know basically said through him and and Tiller published the story about you know the rookie at the time rookie Mar gasa imagine that going to the uh Commercial Appeal beat writer and saying uh we should not trade Mike connley and

Of course you know the the front office and management they got on them about it you know rookie you you don’t know what you’re doing and all that uh he he took his slack for that but I mean was he wrong he was not wrong so to can I mean

That just still stands out to me because you talk about Mark memories that set the tone for the grit and grind area in in my opinion like that’s one of the key moments you know a rookie at the time having the confidence to call up the beat reporter and say hey put my

Name attached to it we’re not Trad I don’t want us to trade Mike Conley and he proved to be right like it’s not like Mike Conley turned into some scrub you know he ended up you know having a very prestigious career in Memphis that one moment just really stands out to very

Opinionated that marcusa I I think I mentioned earlier this week about a time where I noted the the tenuous relationship between Gasol and David fizdale and I I receiv received some communication about who my source was for that and I you know I said my eyes

My eyes are the source and it turned out that that I was on to something watching all that Grizzlies basketball paid off I guess in terms of studying body language but you know Mark was an opinionated guy still is an opinionated guy I’m sure and you know he believed whether it was on

The court or off the court there’s a right way to go about things right and I think that my favorite marcol memory you know there’s a lot of games you know the first half of in 2012 that Infamous game one where the Grizzlies were up 20 some

Points and they lose thanks to Nick Young and yeah you know other Clippers getting hot I was a fan in that I wasn’t me covering for the media I was just sitting in FedEx forum like the other you know 18,000 folks and yeah there was

A big dunk I think C all had towards the end of the first half that I’ll always remember and the energy and the excitement you that was a lot of fun but for me it’s over the entire length of his tenure the the quirkiness right I think I mentioned earlier in the week

This like the soccer stuff he would do hitting the ball and that sort of thing with the basketball you know the clear love that he had for his teammates and I wrote about it for Parker Fleming’s uh sub sakalas uh substack this week yeah you know that the what part of what made

Grit and grind so special is those guys genuinely loved each other and cared about each other and I think that’s the thing I’m most excited to see on Saturday night is Tony and Zach maybe Mike probably not because they’re still in season but I I think I noted when the

Game was chosen Timberwolves are off on Saturday night so uh it would be a major surprise again Pro unlikely because he’s West Coast yeah suns in the Lakers so very unlikely uh but still would be a guy can dream right an old grit and grind head can dream of all four of them

Being together uh but you know it’ll probably be Tony and Zach and Mark and that’s going to be cool and and just kind of reflecting on those relationships right because that that’s the thing that I carry with me is you can go up and down the list of all these

Wonderful memories but at the end of it it’s the journey that you take with those people and that’s life right that’s life in general and you usually don’t talk like that about professional sports teams right like I can think over my entire fandom of the Washington commanders and I haven’t felt that one

Time right or you know watching the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nas growing up and now as an adult the only time in my life that I can honestly say with a professional team that I have followed I have felt that level of emotion is that Memphis Grizzlies group

And that is literally why I still in part am doing what I’m doing right now talking to you is the the way that that resonated with me so and Gasol was a huge piece of that so that’s my biggest memory is the way that he and those guys

Helped me connect to the city and helped me you know really see the value of what sports can be as cheesy as that sounds because the Memphis Grizzlies didn’t win anything right like I don’t I don’t know that they won a divisional title because the Spurs were still really good at that

Time they didn’t win the Western Conference like in theory again if you’re a national person you’re watching why in the hell are all these people crying about this like but you had to experience it right you had to feel it and that’s you just had to be there you

Had to feel it not not even had to see it because you can watch it on YouTube now yeah you you had to feel it you had to feel that 2011 playoff run you had to feel the the Western Conference title run you had to feel the opportunity that

They had at the end there in 2017 you had to feel Zack Randolph putting guys in headlocks gosh and and skipping off I’ll never forget Zach skipping it was like a wrestling match going back to the Wrestlemania stuff when they eliminated the Clippers in Memphis that was one of

The best nights of my life sitting there on the patio rooftop at Alfred’s just watching the craziness of Beal Street it it was just pandemonium in the absolute best way so um th those are some of our memories by all means let us know yours

Going to be most interesting with the 76ers coming to town yeah I agree I think uh jiren Brandon Clark uh are two names that we definitely probably could lean more on the side of seeing Santi as well uh Desmond Bane I I’ll get some clarity there because I think John con

Too but but getting back to Desmond Bay um I’m not sure if we’ll see him again this season I’m gonna wow I’m gonna double check on that and and you know uh cross a couple channels and we’ll see but uh I think the back thing is probably there is a

Possibility uh that that’s all she wrote for Desmond M this season but um that would be a bummer yeah yeah it definitely would be but you know he came back looked good uh played well and again it’s a week left after this so it’s it’s pretty much after this weekend

Said four games so it’s not the worst thing in the world but no um you it’s not like he’s close to the 65 game Mark or anything but uh but yeah it definitely would be a bummer in a way you know uh those guys getting more reps

With him but the other guys it looks like we’re definitely can see them again John Kar um and the other guys that I just mentioned Luke Canard as well and you get to see Joe embiid too Joe embiid Tyrese Maxi uh I I’m looking forward to seeing you know how the Grizzlies

Handled the Joel embiid you know it’s going to about his third game at that point so he’s going to have some reps under his belt um I mean Brandon Clark has been terrific you know jiren Jackson Jr be interesting to see those guys get their swings you know at Joel embiid you

Know and this Sixers team that’s playing with a lot of urgency right now you know they’re they’re in that seven eight SE uh spot right now where they could run into the Boston Celtics or the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round so um that was

The case for me I’d be playing with a lot of urgency and I think that’s what gonna do some Bizarro world like there’s scenarios where the freaking Orlando Magic could be the two seed in the Eastern Conference it’s unlikely but it’s possible which is crazy to say out

Loud I I agree that there’s going to be urgency from Philly to get to that at least six seed right because you essentially get a bye now with the playin tournament if you’re outside if you’re one of those one through six you basically get a week off and certainly

Embiid and others could take advantage of that uh I’m really interested to see you know because we’re going to talk more about this as the offseason approaches and grinds along you know how they address the center position if they think jiren Jackson Jr is that guy and

They start a Brandon Clark or you know if they really go outside the box and start a GG Jackson I don’t think they will do that as I talked about on yesterday’s show um but if you buy into that how they defend a guy like embiid is gonna be really important because

There’s a lot of questions about the rebounding between those two if that is your starting front court let it be known that Stephen Adams was really good against him that’s a really important point and you’re exactly right partner this is something where if you want to

Be that guy and you say hey just go get a you know a Fourth Man type of big four you know a a a 10 to 12 minute rotation guy and we’re straight we don’t need a starter okay this is one of those games where you can kind of show that capacity

To defend jiren’s going to be able to score and Clark’s going to be able to do the things that he wants to do the issue is going to be without fouling and being able to find some scrappiness and piecing together some semblance of rebounding as a group that this is going
