Perhaps the most intriguing part of his game is that he can nearly neutralize the leagues elite finishers at the rim … Man it’s going to lead to some really exciting playoff matchups in his career

Meanwhile JJJ is threatening the blk% records and averaging like 4 fouls a game 😂

Mother fucker is dpoy but they gonna give to gobert. BIG ASS MISTAKE. Who gives a fuck if your team #1 in defense. I can argue that’s more because of ant man and McDaniels than goberts trash ass

I feel like Wemby’s super long and thin arms unironically make it easier for refs too see blocks without additional contact to wrists, hands, and arms against opponents. People with thicker forearms and arms naturally generate more contact.
DeadDay
This is insane

he excels at verticality and chasedown blocks and great at recovery when he isn’t outchased or outmuscled. it was insane last night when the announcers called his first foul in double overtime. i wish he’d even contest more shots around the rim but the tradeoff of course is either a foul or a missed rebound as we dont have any bigs to back him up
essentially, he’s long enough to usually avoid fouls at all
Apokka
What is amazing is even when almost foul out he still manage to remain threatening at the rim
Knight725
he does have a pretty favorable whistle, especially for a rookie. most rookie bigs if they breathe on guys get 10 fouls but he’s allowed to be ludicrously physical with people attacking the rim with no calls.
obviously he’s insanely good even if they call his fouls but he does get away with a lot.
CaptainBananafishJr
This dude’s a beast. But people gotta realize when his impact increases and the Spurs start winning, the block numbers are gonna drop. People are still challenging him because he’s a rookie. But the real sign of a defensive anchor/ rim protector is guys not even trying to attack the rim when he’s down there (see Dwight Howard’s 3 consequence DPOY’s for reference lol).
Actually-Yo-Momma
Obviously it helps that he’s freakishly tall but his timing on defense is elite. There’s lots of 7fters that are no where near this skilled
EgnGru
If he keeps this up he might become the goat blocker.

When you tower over people, it sure must be easier to avoid body contact 😀

Just had the feeling that he will be the last torch bearer in the Olympics this summer.

When I made a thread awhile ago saying he was getting close to this, people were doubting he’d actually get there lol

Agree with you, this kid’s a monster. Havent seen a rookie hustle like this since the 90s. Dude’s block game is wild.

Not fouling is a huge teaching point for pop

Players do not really use the board and the rim as much to protect their shots. I blame the different take on fundamentals because of how much the game has changed. A long time ago, players would try to twist and turn their way to avoid the humiliation of being blocked but sometime in the late 2010s players are taking stupid easily blocked lay ups infront of taller guys trailing or fronting them.
Maybe it is because of the lulls of the constant jogging back and forth from all the long threes and quicker play that supposedly more skilled players are doing amateur mistakes.
Sure Wemby is really long and will block most shots attempted before him but a smarter player would decrease the chance he gets a clean block by using his body or the board/rim to discourage the block attempt.

This might be the special case of a player being on a bad team and deserving a post season award. The various defensive metrics, as good as they are, consistently point to this person being a defensive outlier, and he is passing the eye test, from his physical gifts to his defensive IQ. If the Spurs put a group of veterans and star players around this guy next year, they have a chance at a championship.

Not a basketball fan but maybe someone could tell me how a 7 foot 5 twigman having the highest block ratio is impressive?
