Unexpected Celtics deal opens door for major Spurs opportunity

Yes, please.

  1. Am I crazy if I would take Derrick White over Holiday? That contract for Jrue is massive, given how old he is. I don’t see the Celtics giving Holiday that big of a contract if they didn’t already know they could also retain Derrick White. I feel like he’s been more crucial to the Celtics than Jrue Holiday this season. Don’t see why they would risk letting him slip away

That would be unbelievably amazing and admittedly is the first thing I thought of too when I saw the Jrue news…but I don’t want to set myself up for a letdown. I don’t know all of Boston’s salary situation (other than its approaching ridiculous heights) but if they win it all this year I have to think they will try to bring the whole band back.

Edit: forgot he has one more year on his contract after this season so I’d think he’ll definitely be back w Boston next year, but he may be cost prohibitive for them at that point even if they go back to back. Regardless, I’m more than a little surprised they seem to have prioritized Jrue over Derrick.

If Derrick returns, would he grow his hair back?

My favorite post-Duncan Spur. Hope he returns. I lost interest in watching basketball when he was traded. And for Blake Wesley at that. Devastating.

I would love Derrick back but why would he take (another) team friendly deal with the spurs? He’s already underpaid. He should be getting the bag. Also the Celtics love pumping and dumping players, I think they trade him before they let him go in free agency

  6. White thrives in a reduced role, where his defense, IQ, secondary play making compliments the team. Put him on a team where he is the second or first option for periods of time, is when it buckles. Spurs don’t have the depth to facilitate getting the most out of White.

  7. eh, i don’t think the Celtics would’ve moved Marcus Smart if they didn’t intend to keep Derrick for the forseeable future.

  8. Looptydude

My bobble head would be relevant again, he was traded right after I got it.

Pretty sure Boston is going to spend to win. I don’t see them cutting salary, and if they did, it might actually be Jaylen Brown because they would get a bigger return.

Tbh, Boston probably extended holiday to trade him down the line. White is still under contract for another year. Holiday couldn’t have gotten anywhere near that in free agency because contenders are capped out. This basically allows big team to target holiday if the Celtics are avoiding the second apron in the future.

So I’m confused on how this article thinks this might be a legit possibility this summer. It didn’t even mention anything other than the Spurs having cap space. That’s not even all that newsworthy or insightful.

What is the the pathway to get Derrick White this summer unless the Celtics are fire selling everything to get under the cap? And why would they when they’re in championship contention mode right now.

Not to mention, White is still under contract next season.

The Celtics can offer him an extension this summer. If he declines then they still have his bird rights, and I imagine the plan from there is to just wait until the offseason for when Al Horford’s contract comes off the books, which should allow them to give White the bump in pay and long-term security he might want.

Edit: And believe me I would love Derrick White back. I’d wish it into existence if I could. But this ain’t 2K.

  12. Would love to have the Buffalo 🦬 back. He gained a ton of experience with Celtics and his defensive IQ is desperately needed on the perimeter. He already knows our system and would be plug/play.

Read something the other day that even with the the new CBA and all the taxes associated with blasting through the cap, the C’s could theoretically keep *everyone* and the only issue is the ownership’s pain threshold for paying through the nose.

I don’t know what this means for Derrick White’s future. Boston has zero room to maneuver, but they have to be pretty confident with what they have.

  14. Imaginary-Cycle-1977

I’d love it. But it wouldnt happen for a few years and I’d bet Boston traded somebody else before losing the Buffalo

As usual that website doesn’t actualy tell us anything new/accurate.

The Celtics absolutely love White, and as long as he is happy, I expect they will offer him whatever it takes to stay.

All the Jrue extension tells us – is that the Celtics ownership wants to win titles (plural), and are happy to pay whatever it costs. And even if you are a 2nd apron team, it doesn’t affect you (other than $) if you have all your pieces in place (which they do) and aren’t trying to make other moves.

And honestly, if push came to shove and they needed to save money in a year or two, I reckon Jaylen Brown (on double the money) is much more at risk of being moved than White, and they finally just make this Tatums team and put in all the right pieces around him (which they kind of have).

But if they win this year, they could well become a dynasty with this core, and will probably pay whatever it costs to keep them together.

Love to get Derrick back, but I highly doubt it’s feasible.

It depends on how this post season goes for the C’s. If they dont win the chip with how good they’ve been all season, management might not be willing to pay that tax. But, it still might not be Derrick but breaking up the Jay Jays.

We can offer him poison pill contract to make Boston have a harder time matching.

We offer Derick the money he deserves so he decide to return. No need to disrespect and offer team friendly. We offer the amount he deserves. We love Derick and I am 100% sure he can help us win a championship
