Net rating just counts (points scored – points allowed) and is divided per 100 possessions and split between players on the floor. The Celtics were a historically great team in net rating this year, [top 3 or 4](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/best-net-rating-in-nba-history-by-season) all time (some variation in how you count possessions). Statmuse lists us #4 at 11.6 behind 2016-2017 Warriors at #3 also at 11.6, but [NBA advanced stats has us at 11.7](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced) and [2016-2017 Warriors at 11.4](https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?Season=2016-17)), which puts us as #3. Basketball-reference has us as [#3 as well (11.71)](https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2024_ratings.html), ahead of [#4 2016-17 GSW (11.69)](https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2017_ratings.html), but behind 1996 Bulls (+13.49) 1997 Bulls (+11.90).

So players on the same team who are on the floor together get the same net rating at the same time, so team with best net rating will tend to have all the same leaders. For example look at [Sam Hauser](https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hausesa01/lineups/2024). His minutes net ratings in 2 man combinations were:

    Combo|Net Rating|Minutes|% of Hauser
    –|–:|–:|–:
    Hauser + Pritchard|+15.2|1063 min|61%
    Hauser + Tatum|+12.3|894 min| 51%
    Hauser + White|+16.4|733 min| 42%
    Hauser + Kornet|+12.4|631 min|36%

It’s also worth noting that net rating very much depends on who is on the floor against you and who is on the floor with you, as well as how many minutes you are out there, which is one of the reasons that the best players don’t tend to lead the league in net rating. If you don’t put and any qualifiers on it, [Tatum would be our 12th best guy for net rating](https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?CF=TEAM_ABBREVIATION*E*BOS&PerMode=PerGame&SeasonType=Regular%20Season&dir=-1&sort=NET_RATING):

    PLAYER|GP|MIN|NETRTG
    —|–:|–:|–:
    Jordan Walsh|9|9.3|+29.9
    JD Davison|8|4.9|+29.6
    Neemias Queta|28|11.9|+20.4
    Svi Mykhailiuk|41|10.1|+18.5
    Drew Peterson|3|7.6|+16
    Sam Hauser|79|22|+14.2
    Payton Pritchard|82|22.3|+13.6
    Derrick White|73|32.6|+12.5
    Luke Kornet|63|15.6|+12.1
    Al Horford|65|26.8|+11.4
    Kristaps Porzingis|57|29.6|+11.2
    Jayson Tatum|74|35.7|+11.2
    Oshae Brissett|55|11.5|+10.8
    Jrue Holiday|69|32.8|+9.7
    Jaylen Brown|70|33.5|+8.7
    Jaden Springer|49|10.3|-0.5
    Xavier Tillman|54|18|-2.9

Note Tillman and Springer have bad net ratings this season, because they weren’t always Celtics so shared lots of minutes with much worse lineups. Tillman’s net rating on Grizzlies was -6.9, on Celtics it was +7.9. Springer’s net rating on 76ers was -6.2, on Celtics was +16.3.
