Rasheed Wallace shares his inside take with Gil’s Arena as to why the Darko Miličić draft pick by the Detroit Pistons was not actually bad. Although the media says the Pistons should have drafted Carmelo Anthony, Sheed says that the Pistons needed someone like Darko at the time. He was a big center that was versatile in the NBA.

I respect sheed for defending someone he got rings with but I don’t ever remember that being a good decision. Melo was the best player coming out of that draft LeBron had more upside.
The logic of them picking darko made zero sense at all. Wasn’t a good fit for the coach or the team’s mentality. Pistons issue was getting buckets. All those low scoring games melo would’ve excelled and would’ve been a solid defender with that group.
Its why championship teams gotta have tha stars an roll players to complete them BUT it starts w/ tha coach…coach POPS is like tha NbA coaching standard its why WEMBY is lucky of all places he could have landed at it was with tha GOAT…

Before draft Darko showed more promising potential to the scouts then Melo did. He was 6’11/7’0, 18 year with allot of room to improve. Had good footwork, soft touch around the rim, good passer for his size and also defender. Potential 2 way threat. Like sheed said Darko could put the ball on the floor, so the potential was evident. Brown just disliked his playstyle and Europeans
Detroit Pistons Fans still sick about that draft. Nothing anyone can say will change it. That night will be the night we lost the back to back championship. We needed more scoring. Melo, Chris, Wade anybody but Darko.

People need to realize that if the Pistons took Melo or even Bosh, they don't trade for Sheed mid season. Without a vet like Sheed, they don't make the finals in 04, and if they did, they don't have that 2nd big that could double Shaq and also stretch the floor like he could. Sheed was exactly what that squad needed. Pistons woulda made some runs in 06-09, but by then Rip, Chauncey, and Ben are already almost out of their prime. Not to mention if Lakers win in 04, Shaq and Kobe probably stay together until 08 and win a couple more.
No. They needed what Melo could provide. 18 points on decent shooting splits coming off the bench. They had everything else.

The only reason melo wasn't 1 was due to bron and the pistons needed a big but also the nuggets didn't have a team so they needed a winner and raptors had carter at sg and wade was 21 while melo was 19….and bosh was 19.5 so the draft made sense outside of darko…he was a wild card who should of slid to 5…wade probably goes top 3 in most years and the nuggets for sure take him if melo is gone and rapors would of taken him if carter left that off season especially knowing they would lose him the next year….pistons probably should of taken wade but melo was hyped to no end and panned out….

It’s crazy how they went from winning a championship to getting the 2nd overall pick the following year. It was because of a trade they did with the Vancouver Grizzlies back in 1997.

Rasheed wasn’t even with the team when they drafted Darko for 03-04, he was traded mid season….All they had down low was Big Ben and Corliss Williamson. The darko move was right for their team
