Van Gundy's commentary was an all-time shambles this game. We're used to his classic technique of ''I'm going to find 1 obvious talking point at the start of the game and beat you over the head with it 3 times a quarter,'' but this game he stepped it up a notch by parroting analysis that was just blatantly wrong to everyone watching. ''The Heat are constantly getting great wide open looks, they’re just not going in.’’ He said as the C defender contests a 25+ foot moving jumper. ‘’There's absolutely no way the Heat can get back into this game by shooting 2s.''
SPOILER: They nearly did. They only lost the chance to do so when Bam killed all their momentum by making a flagrant on Tatum when the ball wasn't even in play (which of course, Van Gundy was adamant wasn't a foul and was entirely Tatum's fault.) ''That's on Tatum. That's the risk you take when you shoot one of those practice shots after the foul. What is Bam supposed to do, just let him take a warm-up shot?'' No, Stan. No. He's supposed to contest the shot without fouling his landing space like literally everyone else. Bam is well within his right to contest the shot, just as Tatum is within his right to take it….as long as they don't risk injury on one another in the process. That's the risk, but it was taken entirely by Bam going needlessly hard on a bucket that doesn't even count.
Sorry for the vent, but he's utterly insufferable. Was nice to see Shaq & they boys low-key call him out on it at half-time.
