Pop “We try to bring guys in that we think will fit as far as understanding the culture, people that pretty much got a good chance, or already have, gotten over themselves”

With all the talk in the sub of trading for Trae or bringing back Dejounte or other flashy talent, it’s worth remembering this Pop quote from 2019: “We try to bring guys in that we think will fit as far as understanding the culture, people that pretty much got a good chance, or already have, gotten over themselves.. if we can find guys that have that kind of a personality that the team is paramount over self then that’s a good start.”

In the video with Michelle Beadle the comment is framed in the context of draft talent but I think his comment really extends to talent beyond draft night.

2 months later we tried to sign Marcus Morris

.Also based on what some reporters have said about our FO and what i can gather from pops interviews, they’ve been open to changing things up. The Kawhi debacle was a lesson learned

Yeah, people always forget about this part. For what it’s worth, though, I don’t think this quote from Pop would rule out a Trae trade. I think Pop probably has a pretty positive opinion of the guy.

Spurs run like any good business. They want people that fit the culture and can fill their role effectively. For most teams, it’s just about adding the best talent and you deal with whatever baggage that brings. We simply don’t deal with guys who have lots of baggage. Maybe the last guy who fit that bill was Rodman. Stephen Jackson got cut the minute he started complaining about playing time.

Look at our most important signings over the last 20-30 years. Mario Elie, Danny Ferry, Steve Kerr, Bruce Bowen, Boris. And that’s just a short list. None of those guys played for us when they were anywhere near their prime, except for Bowen. But they were all enormously important to the team and without their contributions, we probably don’t have most of our rings.

I think the amount of players that the Spurs would actually consider bringing in is much higher than people think. People bring this claim up like there is a large list of players we’d never bring in, but I take this something a lot more abstract than others. In reality it’s hard to really know a players personality until you get them in the building and worked with them a lot. Kawhi is a good example.
