ESPN analyst and former NBA guard JJ Redick is reportedly the “early favorite” to land the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coaching job.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported the Lakers job “might well be his to lose in the interview process” as the front office ramps up the search to replace Darvin Ham.

Redick, 39, does not have any coaching experience.

This article will be updated soon to provide more information and analysis.

  1. Just a reminder that JJ Redick’s only coaching experience was a U10 team

The optics of this whole thing is hilarious. We’re gonna hire a guy who had a podcast with the team’s star for 2 months.

Honestly I’m fine with it. Last offseason had a bunch of tier 1 coaches we could have gone after, but this season has none. I’d rather take a chance on someone who could be a great coach over someone we know isn’t.

Rashad McCants may end up being right after all.

  5. He absolutely makes sense as an assistant, he makes sense for HC if we were on a rebuild. But man if this is to appease Lebron then just make Lebron the coach

  6. LongBeachBr0

Im just mad he’s not gonna do his podcast anymore.

  7. LeagueReddit00

Not happy about this, but a new coach isn’t pushing this team to a championship. At worst, we are another early playoff exit and we start the search again when LeBron is gone.

We knew that the moment his name came up. LeBron is finally getting his guy after the Lakers dissed Ty Lue. They’re not going to make the same mistake again.

“Might well be” is doing some heavy lifting in this context. I think he like us is reading the tea leaves and making educated guesses. It certainly seems like JJ has the interest of the FO.

Still, this could also set up a scenario where we hire an Adelman and we can say “Adelman absolutely blew away the FO in their convos with him. He took the job and we were so impressed, etc etc”.

Honestly I don’t even give a fuck anymore, if JJ is smart enough and good enough at analyzing plays that LeBron and other players trust him as a coach, fuck it. Better than Ham

  11. “Might well be his to lose” is ALOT different than the title of “Job is ‘his to lose’”.

This is all opinion with no facts.

  12. BarveyDanger

Well I did just move to North Carolina….Brandon Miller and Melo might be a killer duo….

Look at the bright side. When this very quickly goes to shit maybe just maybe that clown of an owner will finally stop being asleep at the wheel and fire the clown GM

I like to look at the bright side. If this is ‘Lebron’s guy’ then it will keep him engaged all season and he will immediately have buy-in from the players. That’s a huge piece of coaching. Sounds like Coach K may be involved in some capacity, which would be a huge resource. There’s a lot of unknown and risk, but hey, no risk it, no biscuit. If he turns out to be a hit, then we have him for years.

  15. CabbageStockExchange

This is a joke. Zero goddamn experience smh

  16. SlowCrates

This is awesome. I really hope it works out. JJ and LeBron obviously have great chemistry. They see a lot of the same things, they trust each other, etc. I could see LeBron being far more at ease with JJ as a coach, knowing he isn’t the only one paying attention.

  17. Tall_Succotash

I think it’s been kinda obvious Lebron does not need to be coached anymore? He just needs a guy who thinks like him on the sidelines to make the season smother for him.

Make JJ with no coaching experience the HC.. Yeah that will workout great.

  19. Trumpetslayer1111

Honestly none of the names being floated as candidates impressed me. Just hire whoever at this point. It’s going to be a crapshoot no matter what.

  20. Lmao, bro. Why…please just stay off the sidelines. Being a good shooter or going to duke doesn’t mean you’ll command the locker room! For the love of god just stay podcasting

  21. bornlasttuesday

If LeBron and AD play like they did last year than all you need is a not Ham. That being said, no coach was going to get us past Denver or Minnesota this year with the line up. The best we could have hoped for was the fourth seed or so and a second round exit.

  22. YouLookLikeACGreen

That’s not any different than what’s been said by other Laker beat writers.

They haven’t had the interviews yet, as far as I know.

Also really tired of aggregated quotes from articles that I can’t read. B/R is a blog as far as I’m concerned.

To anyone wondering how this will go, please see the coaching career of Steve Nash.

  24. Adorable_End8071

If they hire JJ the lakers will be the laughing stock of the nba

  25. Plucky-Me

No coaching experience? He coaches his kids team. Do your research… but in all seriousness, I don’t hate it. He is serious about the game and will not lacking in preparation, do not know if he is a natural leader, but I am willing to give him a shot.

  26. peterhuan

I don’t know if he is going to do a good job as a coach just as his podcasting career. If he can earn Lebron and AD’s respect, I would expect him doing a better job than Ham at least
