The Detroit Pistons’ FREE AGENCY is about SUPPORT, NOT a Savior!
the Detroit Pistons are entering into free agency for some they see it as a Saving Grace for me I see it as an opportunity to double down on what they’ve already done I believe that they’ve done the work that they actually sought to do when they tore this whole thing down five years ago for the last four seasons they’ve been losing losing big but it hasn’t been for nothing because the talent that they’ve been able to ACR through the draft which for many they say is doing it the right way they’ve done they have gotten the talent and when I say talent I mean top in talent and so this free agency isn’t about trying to find Talent it’s about trying to find guys who fit in support of that talent to help them maximize their potential so I want to dive into this video what free agency should look like for the Detroit Pistons um if you enjoy it smash the like button for me subscribe and the bell for notifications let me just start off off with free agent number one Simone fono unrestricted free agent 28 years old uh about 6869 forward first tole forward um shot the air out of the ball he was a godsend he was everything that they were hoping he would be after trading away buan bogdanovich he was able to come in and effectively space the floor for the Detroit Pistons now I know for some this may not be a sexy move this may not be the splash move but keep in mind Simone fio is in the prime of his career at 28 years old he has shown that he is more than capable of being exactly what teams would hope he is a floor spacer who can also be athletic enough to get do things like get out in transition hit the boards cut off the ball do some slashing he’s a smart basketball IQ player meaning he’s going to be in the right place at the right time moves well without the ball so doesn’t need the ball in his hands and he’s able to play off of most importantly your stars on on this Pistons roster which is Cade and Ivy you see Finding fit is just as important as finding talent and even though he may not be the sexy Splash he’s the right splash the next guy that I want to go to is Quinton Grimes Quinton Grimes is another guy who at 24 years old coming out of the University of Houston played for the New York Knicks um is someone who has everything that the Detroit Pistons are looking for he’s someone if I’m honest with y’all he’s kind of like a poor man’s Dante D Vincenzo he’s a guy who can shoot the ball he can get to the rim when he needs to um he plays well off the ball but most importantly he’s a hard worker who competes on the defensive end each and every timeout now once again this may not be sexy but you have to understand when you’re trying to build a winner you have to build the culture of winning first and so you need guys who embody that culture there’s a reason why Tom Tibido wanted him in the draft there’s a reason why he was able to play and even start for Tom Tibido because he’s a winner because he’s a guy that plays winning basketball he does the little things he Dives on loose balls he gets in there for offensive rebounds he boxes out on the defensive glass he’ll get out in transition he’ll Sprint every single time the these are the things that young guys like Jaden Ivy Kade Cunningham right assar Thompson these guys need to see that modeled in front of them every single timeout to know that there’s a standard and when you have a coach like Monty Williams who wants to play that brand of basketball remember he’s of the ilk of a Tom Tibido or a um what’s his name uh brother from the Houston Rockets right he’s one of those defensive minded coaches who want their guys to play hard no who want them to go all out 100% every single time but if you don’t have players who do that it’s hard to imprint your uh mindset your outlook for what winning looks like on your team and so Quinton Grimes is just a perfect fit I also think he’s going to be wonderful in the back court um next to Marcus Sasser both of them came out of the University of Houston and if you know anything about the University of Houston basketball and that men’s program they get after it on the defensive end and on the offensive end they go get Buckets and then they go get stops and they get up into you and then they get out in transition and then they go get some more buckets and I think Quinton Grimes and Marcus Sasser are going to have great chemistry and you’re going to see these two be able to play off of one another extremely well I believe they did play with with each other at the University of Houston for for a season or two but I think that it’s going to be great chemistry and if anything that we learning from the New York Knicks is that chemistry goes along long way the next guy I want to talk about is James wisman now I know a lot of people uh don’t always know how they feel about I am still on the James wisman bandwagon a lot of people have been out on him I’ve been following him since he was at the University of Memphis this young man continues to improve and keep in mind he’s only 23 years old the same age as Marcus Sasser who’s a rookie and when you keep in mind that big men take longer to develop you have to begin to have a bit of Grace with wise men taking a little bit longer than many may have wanted in the first place now let me be honest with you is he a starting NBA Center no but is he showing flashes that says in the next couple of years he could be a Daniel Gafford hell yeah he could be a little bit better than a Daniel Gafford and if you look at uh what he brings to the table no one has ever questioned his talent or his tools to work with his size 7′ one legit 7′ One 7 s wingspan runs the floor extremely well he has great touch around the rim shooting touch and I’ve talked about these things at length in the past in my videos and so he’s a talent that’s worth taking a shot on instead of spinning 18 to20 million on a backup center now this leads me to our next free agent acquisition who is probably probably the least sexy of all these individuals I know you might be saying oh goodness if this person’s even worse I don’t know who it’s going to be but you know what I love this guy Taj Gibson if you watch the Pistons last season Taj Gibson came in and made an immediate impact on this roster his influence in the locker room with guys like James wisman and Jaylen durren was clear he was somebody who was willing to take on that mentorship role somebody who was willing to encourage them Inspire them Empower them to be their best selves and that’s exactly what you need on this young team see once again it’s not about that sexy Splash it’s about the right Splash it’s about the right ingredients for those of you who actually cook right it ain’t about putting a whole bunch of salt or a whole bunch of sugar and stuff sometimes it’s that little dash of vanilla that little sprinkle of nutmeg right a little bit of cayenne in there right drop some fresh thyme in there right it’s the right ingredients that makes the pot not just throwing in ingredients right and so Taj Gibson is another great pickup for them now a couple of guys that I want to shout out who played with the Pistons last season who were into the bench guys but gave great minutes the first one is Stanley umud he’s an unrestricted free agent about 6667 he shot over 40% from the three-point line last season he’s a great athlete long wingspan was he was he was definitely a Monty Williams type of player um dog defense every single timeout gave 110% effort and energy and that really is what the identity of this team is becoming always night in and Night Out effort energy and most importantly he’s got some shooting right and that’s insurance that you can have behind guys like Quinton Grimes um I think a shot is going to return when I’m talking about Grimes here uh he didn’t shoot the ball particularly well but I think it’s more so he has some injury stuff he’s coming into a new situation just got traded and it was going to be tough for him to acclimate himself especially playing around young guys but I think his jump shot is going to come around but even if it doesn’t having Stanley am mud back there is is is a great insurance now another guy that I really liked um was chizy metu right he’s about a 69 610 versatile big plays between the center and power forward position um he’s also someone who can shoot the ball good athlete plays hard right the these are the type of guys that you want there chizy metu I think he’s like 27 years old right right going into his prime physically these are guys who are going to be able to compete who are going to be able to be supportive pieces and who most importantly are not going to take minutes away from your core of Cade Ivy assar Stu Duran you don’t need guys coming in trying to steal their minutes that’s not what this is about you need guys who are going to compliment them to help them to maximize what they could do on the court now another free agent that I want to throw out there just for kind of kicks similar to the Taj Gibson I really like Wesley Matthews I really like him for this roster at 37 years old he’s a similar veteran player who can come in and talk to these young guys he can calm Kate Cunningham down right he can talk to Jaden Ivy and say take your time right look for this watch out for that these are the guys Taj Gibson and Wesley Matthews who are out there during shoot around moments and saying hey you know what watch out for this type of Defense watch out for this type of um coverage on you make sure you you see these things coming these are the little things that make a huge difference in the long-term Outlook of a team now this is probably the more sexier take when it comes to the free agency for the Detroit Pistons it’s going to be to extend Kade Cunningham but to do so now he hasn’t played over 62 games I believe um over his first three seasons right he’s really only played two somewhat full seasons right he hasn’t exactly blown the doors open and elevated this this team and so the team has all the leverage to be able to say hey we know you’re talented but we also know you’ve dealt with some injuries you could probably want some security and we would like security we still believe in you so we would like you to take a little bit less than a Max extension which would be about 45 million a year for 5 years if they can sign Cade to let’s say about 38 to 40 million especially if they get him around 38 I have a good feeling that he’s going to have a great year next year he’s going to be that Fringe Allstar next year and all of a sudden the Detroit Pistons are going to look like Geniuses for locking him up early now I know you might be thinking well why would Kade want to do this well the injuries and when you have injuries for the first three seasons especially one that takes you out for a full season you start thinking about your long-term security early and so this could be really enticing for him to do now rather than wait until after next season the last part of this free agency is to release Evan fornier and Troy Brown Jr these are two guys after the trade deadline last season brought almost nothing to this team despite their talent and abilities they didn’t seem to have the fight they didn’t seem to make a difference they didn’t really seem to have the desire to really play on this team and so these are guys that you can free up a salary cap space for um to sign guys like fono the best part about this off season is going to be that they don’t have to dip into their salary cap space in a major way they can sign most of these guys for veteran minimums they can sign these guys for extensions probably fanto would probably be about the biggest signing of about maybe like 15 to 18 million a year but you can do two and an option right two years with they a team option uh for number three and this can allow the Detroit Pistons to be in a good Financial space over the next couple of Seasons because after this offseason they’re going to be looking at having to extend Jaylen durran and Jaden Ivy and then the year after that assar Thompson and it’s going to get expensive quick and you want to have contracts that allow you to have flexibility that allow you to uh maintain your Chemistry on your team your continuity right by not having guys on the team that outprice everyone else now I know this may not be a sexy offseason free agency but I think it’s the right free agency because like I’ve been saying the guys who are going to turn this thing around are all already on the roster now you just need to be able to start off going into training camp knowing who that core is which I think they already do that starting lineup of Cade Ivy assar Stewart Durant is going to be that starting five for the future it should have been probably when it started the season but it doesn’t matter going in the next season a full training camp with with Monty Williams you’re going to see a team that’s going to come out at the beginning of next season with a lot of fire a lot of desire to prove to everybody that they’re a good team that they have potential to win and that they don’t need a savior to come in they don’t need a Zack LaVine or Brandon Ingram they need the guys who are already there in that locker room and then when you look at the bench you got a whole lot more Talent a whole lot more dog a whole lot more shooting than a lot of people are giving them credit for and you know what they say when you have have a guy with a chip on the shoulder you know they’re going to show up and give him your best and that’s exactly what the Detroit business are known for so I hope y’all can hear this video let me know what you think in the comments section if you enjoyed it smash the like button for me and subscribe and I’m going get at y’all peace

Draft a big man and anchor the defense
Hopefully the Pistons get the right pieces from free agency/trades that complement their core and not get a Miles Bridges or Zach Lavine to be their savior.
