The Best of Steve Kerr’s First 10 Years with the Warriors

The Best of Steve Kerr’s First 10 Years with the Warriors

[Music] I think about all my former coaches and teammates um you know when I grew up I had great coaching I went to John Wooden basketball camp and uh played for a legendary High School coach in in Los Angeles named Jerry Marvin um so I was lucky I always was blessed with with great coaches and then lude Olsson who will be at the press conference today um gave me my one scholarship offer Arizona and 25 years later 26 years later uh here I am it seems surreal in a lot of ways but uh I know that it has everything to do with all the uh great coaches and teammates that I’ve had in my my life and in my career well the one thing that I know and that I’ve uh heard in terms of advice from other coaches you just have to be your and I think that’s always the case in whatever you do I had to do that as a player as a general manager as a broadcaster you can’t try to copy people um so I’m going to be myself my view is what are we going to do the next decade what are we going to do the next five years my goal is to continue this upward Trend that the team has already been on Steve said I haven’t coached before I’m well aware of that but I’m going to work hard and surround myself with people that can help me get better and each and every day I’m going to become a little bit better than the day before as a coach in this league and we believe that and um for us it was the right answer it was confidence combined with humility and we love that combination of Steve I know I’m ready for this um in a lot of ways I’ve been sort of training for it for much of my life but it’s also nerve-wracking and exciting and brand new and uh I can’t wait to get started [Music] all right he’s in the [Music] game get in there that’s I control my own destiny now I control my own destiny do I need to get in there little too much Rim there control your own destiny is it your own this is um my first year coaching Steph Curry splits the defense behind the back fires a three oh he puts it in I remember on the sidelines seeing him looking like Curly Neil from the Harlem Globe Trotters dribbling through traffic then a fade away three and in my mind I’m thinking every coach that I ever had in my life their voice was in my head saying that’s a terrible shot that’s a terrible shot that’s a terrible shot keep in mind this is like the first couple of months that I coached Steph Curry so you see me on the sidelines I’m holding my arms up I’m thinking Phil Jackson Greg po their voices are in my head lud Olson this is a terrible shot what I eventually figured out is that it’s a great shot because it’s Steph Curry the numbers don’t lie that’s a that he makes over 40% of the time so I finally realized Steph gets to shoot whenever he wants I think the sacrifice that every guy made from Andre and David you know stepping away from the starting lineup to throughout the playoffs different guys stepping in and playing whatever matchup we needed we just played and they were all in it just to win that’s the only thing that mattered this is an amazing group of guys to me what this Coach of the Year award is about it’s it’s about what we’ve built what we’ve all built you know the the players uh management uh front office and the coaching staff um when you win you know Bob says this all the time you know it’s amazing how much you can succeed when nobody cares who gets the credit it’s a John Wooden quote and and it’s absolutely right and Bob is one of the most modest people I know uh he put together this amazing roster and yet he’s given me the credit today uh Luke is the same way we we’ve got we’ve got a an entire group that understands if we just work together we can achieve great things and then a lot of awards individually will come um and that’s great and the trophy means a lot but really what what means a lot is just the everyday association with our team and the coaches who worked so hard when I was away to not only keep things going but to get off to the greatest start in NBA history so pretty lucky to have this group I would love to feel whatever the hell you’re feeling right now just once in my life for me like if I went like five for six and made four threes that was about the best I ever did here’s what I’m going to show you that’s your shooting totals that’s your plus minus all right so it’s not always tied together you’re doing great stuff out there the tempo is so different when you’re out there everything you generate for us is so positive it shows up here not always there but it always shows up here you’re doing great great carry on my son I’ve been through this a lot been unbelievably lucky to be around great teams and be part of great teams and obviously everyone’s talking about the talent and you know super teams all this stuff but I’m telling you championship teams don’t come about because just because of talent you have to have talent but it’s so much more than that it’s the commitment that each player makes to the team and to each other yeah it was definitely the toughest um from the standpoint that uh you know it’s the fourth year in a row that we’ve attempted to get back to the finals and u i remember sitting in this room three years ago it seemed like a dream and um this feels more like reality um and I hope that doesn’t sound arrogant it just uh you know that’s the talent we have and that’s the experience we’ve gained but it’s a very different feeling um you know it’s still euphoric but you know three years ago was I can’t believe this happened and now it’s I can definitely believe this happened but it was hard and it gets more and more difficult uh as you go through one of the things I love about you is you’re like two for 11 no hesitation shooting a 60-footer nobody in the league does that you have so much confidence in yourself and within games like this you turn it around like that it’s awesome amazing I had your confidence what are you laughing about you’re hooked I like it I think you get to that eventually but right now we need a little rhythm what would you do right now if you were me if you were me what would you guys do if you were me it’s all about the defense you guys are suffocating suffocating they can’t score on us if you maintain that energy level all right great stuff you know what exciting for me you’re already really good and you can be so much better so many little things you’re doing so much great stuff man you’re killing killing AES you’re going to get better bring the energy right bring the energy bring the life all right I love the pace I love the energy but we got to follow through with some execution good I can’t believe you’re back so you’re still going strong there’s a song by Steely Dan called old days I just thought of that Ste Dan old days look like the old days I really do keep going why not you know what we met Roger Federer this year right in China I said why do you keep playing he said I love it if you love it keep going best thing we’re doing is we’re not fouling down there even when they’re scoring it’s okay get it out of the rim and push it all right get it out get it out get it out push push the great thing with you is you always have ability to put stuff behind you so deal with that later finish the game out 4 and A2 minutes they’re fighting like crazy for the playoffs right so we got to bring it right back all right bring it match their level of intensity games on the line every single possession shot goes up we’re hitting somebody what’s going to win us a championship all right let’s do it let’s do it and the final five Steve Kerr led the Warriors to five straight NBA Finals taking home three titles and of course that 73 win season well they’re all unique they’re all special um I think this one may have been the most unlikely just from the standpoint of where we’ve been the last couple years a lot of unknowns with injuries to Clay um you know Draymond at the end of the year Steph at the end of the year but it takes u a full team effort to do this and we just had a a a great group who uh who got it done take uh personally I want to say we’ve had a lot of great wins over the years and I can’t rank them all but terms of game plan discipline like what you guys did tonight I don’t think we’ve ever done it’s that I mean seven turnovers you eat the crap out them on the on the glass we physical we top dominating um that was amazing spacing offensively like you guys nailed it you AC aced the final that was incredible to watch you guys have been doing this for a long time oh still 50 points and an in seven how many people have done that zer why you guys are Champs tonight was was an example of why that we are a championship team you got it done

Ten years ago, Steve Kerr was named Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors.

  1. are you protesting your universities that dont have anything to do with the war and not the military or government that make the decisions? You guys are way off in location 💕😚

  2. I wish they would bring emotes back. So toxic when I would wipe a duo and either pull the mistletoe out and make smooching noises or pull the grill out and "cook um". BO was where I started…I loved it! Also, no loadouts, yes please. Way more traditional BR style. 😻👅

  3. It's so funny seeing Doc Rivers name on that 15 Greatest Coaches list, when he is one of the most overrated coaches in the history of the NBA.

  4. In 10 years: 6 finals appearances and 4 times champions. That's quite a resume, coach.

  5. Kerr is one of the most accomplished man associated with basketball. Congrats man that’s impressive
