somewhat parody at least somewhat we have going to have six straight years now with a different Champion six straight years with Boston Indiana Dallas and Minnesota left it’ll be the sixth straight year the last time that happened was all the way back to like the pre-ic era 7475 to 7980 I actually think the other one that’s important here is had we not had the Kevin Durant bubble this started many years ago when Durant then gets the the salary cap kind of jump and Durant goes to the Warriors I actually think we could have had in the last years I think we would have had Poss possibly Cleveland Golden State Oklahoma City Toronto Lakers Milwaukee Golden State Denver and then whoever we get this year so that you suddenly now stretch it out for a decade with only one nine different teams winning the title over a decade which is what the NBA wants so the NBA has created a very very thin margin now there are not these dominant teams that roll with it some interesting little notes that are taking place in this that are worth noting for the Jazz Justin zanic Danny AES Ryan Smith the front office it’s nine straight years of the MVP hasn’t won it um it’s the actually since 2019 the MVP hasn’t been to the Conference Finals 2016 was the last time an MVP went to the NBA finals which then begins to beg the question of in an era so let’s go to the first thing of what’s taking place here why are we having parody because the league has put in a more stringent tax the luxury tax is having an impact it’s even more severe now than it ever has been and so that when you suddenly get some of these top level players and you’re the Denver Nuggets we knew this all year long you have absolutely no bench right we talked about 240 minutes now what’s super interesting about 2 40 minutes for you every dayers you know 240 minutes 240 minutes is the amount of minutes that is 48 minutes times 5 so it’s the amount of player minutes in a game and one of the things that on lock on Jazz we look at to start every single year is do you have 240 minutes on Denver and Milwaukee and a bunch of these teams the reality was that they didn’t have 240 minutes the comment was well when we get to the playoffs it shouldn’t matter it has Justin holiday is not a regular rotation NBA player Christian Brown has not totally proven that Reggie Jackson was right on the edge of that maybe not and they last night only got 34 minutes off their bench total they got one field goal off their bench Denver did and then didn’t get I believe had zero field goals in the previous game when they got boat raced or they had some late in the game their regular bench players Christian Brown had one but of Reggie Jackson holiday and brown they went one for 17 in that game Denver did not have 240 minutes Milwaukee did not have 240 minutes and then when they got injuries it got worse Minnesota pretty close to 2 40 minutes maybe in the and frankly Monty moris who’s not playing I would generally classify as a rotational backup point guard in the NBA for 240 minutes you know in the regular season when you’re going nine deep maybe they’re a little short but not much Melanie Morris is probably I would give him into the 240 minutes Indiana has kind of linked this thing together rather remarkably but has turned Isaiah Jackson into nine viable minutes McConnell certainly Obi Topp was a 10 pick and then the stunner is the rookie Ben Shepard who they got just a brilliant game seven out of the other day Shephard out of Belmont where Ian Clark went by the way and Shepard’s interesting because he played for all four years and so interesting similar to Marcus Sasser and some of the older Bigs like haime hwz you know you got a guy who played 124 college games and maybe he is not going to have quite the upside um but it is possible that he’s more ready than some others he did not have a particularly brilliant regular season year he shot 39% from the field and 31% from three so I think that’s a little bit of a stunner but I think we might be seeing that depth matters more than we ever thought it has that’s like my number one takeaway of Boston Indiana Dallas Minnesota is that depth matters more now than ever before that the teams that really went into the year without 240 minutes don’t have it and if you look at us the Jazz being us when we’ve had 240 minutes last year we’ve far exceeded expectations we’ve really stunned people a little bit with what we’ve been able to do right and then you wonder well why is that I’ve always thought it was because we had 240 minutes the other one that gets interesting here that we look when we look at this is what do we learn about these teams so do you have to be offense do you have to be [Music] defense I think you just have to be elite now this is not something you can just easily put together but if you look at three of the four teams then we’ll dig into the kind of the outlier which is Dallas Boston is the number one offense in the NBA or Indi depending who you look at in in Boston or Indiana is the number one offense in the NBA in the number the number two offense in the NBA is the other I had Boston as one and Indiana two I think that’s right for the regular season Oklahoma City was three by the way worth noting Denver was five so if you’re wondering like did the Le did the final eight tell us anything New York was seven Dallas was eighth in the league offensively yeah it did it told us that offense matters the elite defensive teams Minnesota Orlando then Boston then Oklahoma City Miami Cleveland Houston New Orleans didn’t Advance other than Minnesota now let’s go back to this you have to be a lead at something so the number one and two offenses in the NBA were Boston and Indiana they were the number one and two shooting teams in the the NBA they were both top 10 at not turning it over they were middle of the- pack and offensive rebounding and neither of them went to the free throw line very much Minnesota was the number one defense in the NBA by a mile the number one team at defending the shot the fifth best at forcing turnovers the 10th best at defensive rebounding and they were average at free through it the only team here that’s not just a lead at something is Dallas Dallas is comes in for the season as the eighth best offensive team and the 17th best defensive team however let’s take a second Dallas absolutely brilliantly transforms their roster give credit to Dallas’s front office their of the trades that they make at the the trade deadline and um all that are involved there um so they trade for PJ Washington and they trade for Daniel Gafford and and they do this on about the 8th of February so let’s go to the 10th of February which is probably even too early to have an impact but let’s go 10th of February and from there on out and the Dallas Mavericks become the sixth best offensive team and the seventh best defensive team so they’re not Elite but they’re good they did have they were 21- n though so they’re a little bit of the outlier here getting this one all right few other things that I think are really interesting about this plus the Jazz dropped to 10 and by dropping to 10 what is the impact of that and then who’s available and we’ll review the draft numbers that I did in the P before I left on my vacation with based on the players we now know the Jazz um and uh Indiana’s Mark Bole is one of the best and sha Grande might be the best so so about as good a look as you can get of guys right there so when you’re watching you might want to flip over to Sirus XM and get the feeds as well all right um one other note I think’s really interesting on this final four is that someone’s GNA win a title early here so usually you win your titles at like 27 years old maybe J 26 so Jason Tatum at 26 is not that old to be winning his title but that it’s a little early tyres halberton is 24 so that would be early for him Anthony Edwards is on a meteoric route of doing this he’s doing this earlier than anyone would expect at just 22 years old if he pulls it off and Luca is ahead of the curve as well at just 25 years old so a little early um for any of these Superstars to win it another thought for you on what we might have learned from the NBA before we um go to the Jazz draft picks um do you need a point guard like the whole idea was that the league was moving away from point guards Mike connley Tyrese Halbert and Luca donic Boston I guess is a little bit of the model everyone was using for saying you don’t need a point guard but and they traded Marcus Smart but Derrick White has probably taken that role they’re also just brilliantly talented the other one that’s out there that I would actually show you know I think you have to realistically you know not all of them but Dallas has a number three pick and a number one pick on their roster Minnesota has two number one picks on their roster Boston has two number three number three picks and porzingis who was Al Horford was a number three pick by the way if you’re wondering and Al and Pingas who is a fourth pick so I’m not sure you know that they weren’t all from that team Indiana should probably be our favorite team at this point and I think Indiana’s going to give Boston some problems uh by the way because of the fact well one Rick carlile’s a genius and two that um I think that there’s going to be a problem for them with Al Horford playing instead of porzingis in the first two games on how they’re possibly going to guard um Al Horford is is a weak link defensively at 37 years old as brilliant a player as he is and so I think you will see Indiana make some inroads if they’re not just exhausted Boston’s been sitting for a long time on that one but that one’s also pretty interesting Indiana’s kind of interesting to us because I don’t I think their highest draft pick on their roster is probably Obi topam if it’s not Jaylen Smith topam was the eighth pick Smith was the 10th pick I think that’s the high those are the highest picks of the draft because halberton was 12th all right let’s go to the Jazz for a second 10th pick of the draft that so it sucks because you don’t like it to go that way here’s the one two thoughts on why it might be all right one is I do think the way this draft is if there’s a player the Jazz really really really want um with their 28th and 31st pick or whatever those 29th and third whatever I think they’re gonna be able to move up I think they should be able to move up a few slots um if they have a player they really really like at six or seven or eight the second thing I would say is from everything I’ve heard about this draft it sure seems so this might be a draft you don’t want to be paying top four salary like if the comment that everyone’s making is whoever you draft in the top of this draft wouldn’t go eight in another draft because there’s just no highend Talent well you don’t want to be paying them one two or three four salary early on so in that sense not being you know having the 10th pick maybe you’re getting the same value and you’re getting them at a better price who’s going to be available there are three players when we did our numbers before I went for the everyday you might recall there were three players that I really liked in the numbers that might be available so Cody Williams brother of Jaylen Williams out of Colorado about 19 and a half years old 6790 pounds he was 84th percentile in transition 86 percentile in a limited isolations and 96% out Rim perent so elite elite athlete at least basketball numbers-wise now I’ve read some of the reports that try to claim he’s not and this and that that’s fine I’m just telling you that functionally what he does is executes in athletic situations his pick and roll ball handling was only 53 pick and rolls he was 50th percentile which isn’t bad but it actually you know and that’s one of the books on him he can’t really handle it’s but that’s not actually terrible um his shooting was in the 86 percentile in spot up 95th percentile in catch and shoot and 99th percentile in unguarded catch and shoot he just couldn’t shoot off the bounce he was five of 16 in limited bounce so to me Cody Williams is pretty that that’s a six seven and a half Wing player that shows functional athleticism that can shoot it and I’ll have to watch him a little bit more but that’s pretty pleasing two other guys that should be available at 10 that I really like Devin Carter who’s a combo guard out of Providence he had a really good combine largely because he he came in with a six and a half 6 eight and a quarter wingspan with the best two foot vertical jump in 134 transition attempts which is like the third highest of anyone he was in the 709 percentile for a 63 guard is pretty good his isolation was in the 71st percentile and his Rim percentile was in the 82nd that’s incredible for a 63 guard he was in the 89th percentile in pick and roll on 151 which is the only Isaiah colier is the only one who had more pick and rolls shooting he’s in the 70th percentile and spot up on 114 86 percentile and C catch and shoot 35th percent on unguarded catch and shoot and then 73rd percental on 39 of 121 on off the boun tries Devin Carter is 22 years old so you have to figure that out but his numbers were terrific he’s one of my n big numbers winners in this draft I would be very comfortable having looked at the numbers not looked at the play of Devin Carter at 10 Jared McCain the old freshman 20 we all talk old Reed Shepard is is this guy’s older as a freshman at Duke 63 280 or two excuse me 6300 again 87th percentile in transition in 98 attempts so that tells me okay small but really go good finishing using whatever athleticism he has isolation percentage 69% of just 14 attempts Rim finishing 70th percentile which is fine pick and roll ball handling 93rd percentile so Jared m Kane was the best pick and roll guard other than Terren Shannon who uh the 66 220 Wing which is an interesting kind of P he’s another one that’s kind of peeking out on some of our numbers but he’s old 24 years old out of Illinois so it’s hard to some of these covid guys are so old it’s hard to tell but McCain at 20 on 69 pick and rolls was in the 93rd percentile he in the 78th percentile in in uh shot percentile in spot-up percentile he was in the 90th percentile in catch and shoot he’s in the 61st percentile unguarded and then off the bounce he’s in the 81st percentile honestly we can all talk about how bad this draft is and all this and that those are great numbers those numbers on McCain and Carter are really good on Cody Williams are good too on Reed Shepard are off the charts and then we can get into that there’s little issues Reed Shepard 61 has obviously become the most controversial player in this draft we’ll talk more about him might go three might go 10 who knows but I think the other thing that we’re looking at here is on the players that I just talked about and we’ll talk about some more in a moment like that’s I from my from my numbers at a 10th pick if you go through the years there aren’t that many guys that have numbers better than Jared McCain and Devon Carter 63 combo guards you have to figure out how they play with Keon or you don’t you just get the best player and figure it out over time and the same thing you know last year they just if you go back to last year’s draft that everybody loves so much you go look around the 10th pick there aren’t that many guys that were doing this kind of stuff like Anthony black wasn’t that Cason Wallace wasn’t really that case Wallis was in isolation was a case and Wallace is actually a little similar he was 56 percentile in isolation 77th percentile Rim 70 percentile on 103 pick and rolls I loved Cas Wallace Remember 66 percentile spot up 59 % catch and shoot 44 percentile unguarded then off the bound 74th percenti like that’s case Wallace’s numbers aren’t quite as good and he didn’t great and he got a great year at Oklahoma City he was the 10th pick if I remember correctly Keon’s numbers weren’t this good Keon was in the 18th percenti transition percent and he’s in the 30th percenti Rim finishing now he was heavy and he lost a bunch of weight but his pick and rolles were in the 66 percentile on 153 attempts sounds right and we just had McCain and Carter we in the 70th or we’re in the 93rd and 89th percenti in pick and role play last year I mean the only guys who had that last year anywhere near that last year in the draft draft were Marcus Sasser was a senior and he had a Very Good Year guys who’ve had in the N 90th percentile plus these guys are 93 and 89 in pick and roll ball handling skills in pick and roll over the years included the following Malachi brandham tar een Jaylen Williams Santa Clara Ryan Rollins who didn’t hasn’t panned out yet in 2020 I’ll take any of those by the way for our 10th pick any of those tar e uh in the uh Moses Moody had 31 attempts cam Thomas it’s a 94th Chris Dante was as well he’s obviously as old um and always a question but cam Thomas has turned out to be a Bonafide scorer in a sadique bay in 88 and 66 pick and rolls Tyrese Maxi 86 perti 97 alai Flynn was off the charts didn’t pan out Desmond Bane was in the 85th percentile Isaiah Joe was in the 85th percentile Devin doson who has not panned out we’re getting L pretty low into that draft uh Zion Williamson was the 96 percentile Darius Garland was the 92nd percentile limited time because he didn’t play much Romeo lford at in indana was in the 90th percent tal and has not panned out Tyler hero is in the 98th in limited attempts it’s pretty good company there’s a such an error to this draft is terrible but the numbers it’s not like college is different right now than it was before all right we’ll continue look at some of the other players and some rumors about what’s going on around the NBA as well today’s show is brought going to be interesting to see the most often talked about multiple places have the Jazz trading up for him is Stephen castle one Scout said to me go look at Marcus Smart’s numbers and try to see because that’s the ilk that they see castle castle in transitions in the 81st percentile and Elite and a Rim finishing is good and his pick and roll is not bad 74th percentile pick and roll 72 attempt so that’s all really good but his spot up shooting is was in the 28th perc down now he shot well at the combine his catch and shoot was in the 29th percentile and his unguarded catch and shoot was in the 13th his jumper up to bounce is in the 26th percentile we have not been able to find anyone with those poor numbers that actually are able to Parlay to the NBA same thing on Ron Holland now G League ignite is so weird it’s hard to tell what’s going on with all that transition percentile he’s in the 60th again Elite athleticism shows his Rim finishing 55th percentile but again g-league nights probably harder than College pick and roll pretty good 59th percentile 90 three attempts so he can do it spot up 30th percentile catch and shoot 14th percentile unguarded 16th percentile dribble off about 17th percentile so those two are pretty brutal numbers there one of the players I’m intrigued by who seems to be just falling and falling and falling is Isaiah CER so one thing we’ll look at tomorrow is what guys were ranked coming out of high school because I actually think sometimes that’s a better ranking than College and Coler was in the 74th per down transition 68% Rim finishing he’s got a brilliant body at 64210 he ran 170 pick and rolls which is the most of anyone other than bub Carrington he’s got good size and he shot he was in the 6C percentile in running the pick and roll his shooting’s only okay 43rd percentile in spot up but 72nd percentile in catch and shoot 60 first percentile and unguarded catch and shoot and then is off the bounce dribble which he took 68 attempts was in the 56 percenti so none of those are that ugly and he seems to be dropping so I’m curious to see what happens there because that’s actually a guy that I still kind of am interested in jacobe Walt Walter the 20-year-old out of Baylor 19 a half 65190 is got 19th per on transition similar to keante was decent and limited um isolation but the worst Rim finisher in the draft at 15 percenta had 88 pick and rolls 43rd percentile nothing great spot up was fine 71 percentile 69 percentile on catch and shoot and then once he got the off the bound shooting didn’t shoot it very well 32 percenti so I’m not totally sure numerically at least why call you’re slipping on everyone as I said earlier Jared McCain Devin harder two players who are my numbers love will be available at 10 and might be really good solid NBA picks and players for the Utah Jazz all right that is locked on Jazz glad to be back in the saddle we’ll start watching some players breaking them down talking some more about all these things exciting times here coming up and we’ll look back at some of their college rankings and see where they sit on that because I think that stuff matters it
