Was the New York Knicks’ Season a Success? | THE ODD COUPLE

uh Rob we talked about the Knicks briefly or the Pacers just in the last segment let’s let’s talk a little more about the Knicks and um get to the second round go seven games um I mean Rob Julius Randall out Mitchell Robinson out Jaylen Brunson ultimately Rob is out because in the third quarter he broke his hand third quarter of game seven uh who who am I missing Oobi out those are four starters and bogot banovic out I mean it was ridiculous at at the end of the series how depleted the Knicks were and um for that reason rob a lot of people really you know felt like the Nicks showed a ton of heart and that overall it was really a good showing gutsy showing for the Knicks this season Jaylen Brunson Rob thought differently here he is when asked if the season was a success did we win the championship did we get close so no that’s just that’s my mindset that’s just how it is Rob your thoughts I’m not I’m not mad at that whole idea I don’t know if they were going to win the championship what I will say Chris and he should be disappointed and and you could make any excuses you want they were hurt they were they’ve been hurt they were without Julius Randall all up to this point everybody was yelling about uh Brunson being a superstar and and oh my God look at the Knicks and nobody was counting them out because of the injury they’ve been playing without do you agree that there are there’s a difference between an excuse and an explanation sure I I get that but but here’s my my only thing because o oh they had OG when they started the series Once they lost him Rob I mean that dude they were 26 and five with him and I think they ended up 14 and 17 without him since he joined the team so that’s a huge difference when when he lost him it was like my goodness I I I’ll I’ll just look at it from this Brunson played in the first half when that game was decided like like can we he didn’t play well before the broken out the hand Chris I I get it I I don’t want to sit there and act like the injuries didn’t factor in but most people I talk to even going into that game honestly thought that they had a shot to win and they and they did of and they didn’t I mean I’m I’m just saying and from their standpoint they’re back where we are do we do we know I don’t know next year are they going to get past the second round next year when everybody’s healthy this is what they we’ll see what changes they make but as they are no yeah and this was an opportunity so you feel like he’s was the season was not a success I I just they they’re in the same spot that they were a year ago right they they beat Cleveland the first first round lost in the second round that that’s all but there are circumstance I look I like my leader saying what jayen Brunson said I like him setting a standard like this is not what we’re trying to do we’re not just trying to create a little bit of excitement little bit of Buzz and basically be a mediocre playoff team we’ve got to get better I’m here to win a championship I’m here to bring the Knicks their first championship in more than 50 years I like that but Rob he’s on the inside and that’s how he should feel but we’re on the outside and looking at the Knicks taking it all together the season was a rousing success first of all for Jaylen Brunson he made it his first Allstar team he’s going to make his first all NBA team Rob he’s got one more year left on his deal and then he’s got a player option he has set himself up to now get a Max Level contract for him it was an incredible success and some people are considering him a superstar and for the Knicks as a whole you can’t ignore the injuries I mean my my it was ridiculous how how their players were going down left and right whether you blame tibs or not they still were going down and they rob developed they revamped their reputation you talk about an image makeover nobody nationally thinks much of the Knicks but nationally their games have drawn the best ratings in the playoffs people saw how ralas the garden was people saw all the celebrity and rappers in the front rows people saw all the 90 Stars Allan Houston Latrell freewell Larry Johnson John Starks Stefon Marberry 90s and later I didn’t see uh Charles Oakley though yeah Oakley wasn’t there but the rest of them were and they actually flew them I assume good good assum but they were in Indianapolis Rob those dudes were went they traveled my point is it was a great look for the Knicks first of all they play with heart they play with toughness they they exhaust themselves they get every ounce out of their ability and then they’ve got the the superstars or stars from the past supporting them like that’s the type of atmosphere and image makeover Rob that I think could make them attractive to a free agent so I I I think and and look yeah it would have been great to get to the next round technically they lost to a lesser team and a lower SE a six seed that they were up two on in the series but it was a six seed that was healthy and they I mean we can’t belittle not only did was Brunson Rob he was also playing hurt I mean he that’s the thing too it wasn’t like he was even 100% till he broke his hand they thought he might be out for the series with the foot injury so I I just don’t know look maybe they would have shocked the world and beat Boston I we all doubt it and it would have been better to get to the Conference Finals of course but I think overall Rob just stepping back and looking at this I I I don’t know how it can be called anything but a success we know they weren’t a real 2C yeah but they had an opportunity I I’m just saying Chris when you look at it I think it’s a missed opportunity you lost four of them four of the last four of five to lose the series you lose a game seven at home your star didn’t show up for in the first half of that game not that it would have matter because the Pacers shot 72% but but you you know but it’s Contex no I I I know there’s a context but they’re no better than they were to me I mean and that’s probably why if Denver had lost let’s say joic or or or jic was playing hurt and Murray was out for the series wouldn’t you look at them losing to uh Minnesota differently than we look at it now well I mean they were without they they wound up still being in that series Chris they won a game five right what what was it 22 and then they won a game five banged up and and they were impressive in that win right then they then they go up and then they lost the last two I’m I’m not taking away the injury I just ultimately if you’re a Nick fan did you really what what step did you take that make you any different from being a uh getting knocked out in a second you you revamped your image okay you don’t think you don’t think think that’s window yeah well look they haven’t been able to get free agents Rob and look that’s a question too and we talked with Lindsey Hunter last hour about Tibido um and Rob the athletic did a story a couple weeks ago where the players voted anonymously on a number of things yep and Tibido was overwhelmingly the coach that they least wanted to play for and Chris that’s three straight years and it’s getting worse every year as far as players not wanting to play for him yeah I mean and I’ve heard he’s gotten a little better than he was say you know 15 years ago but still that that’s relative right he still may be more it’s it’s interesting because t i I think there are coaches in the NBA and tibs is probably one of them I don’t know for a fact but there are some coaches in the NBA Rob where they get every ounce of ability they maximize A team’s potental like a team that’s not that talented they get the absolute most out of them right team’s not that good but they’ll get 47 wins out of them and a playoff series Victory but when they get some real like legitimate Talent they over coach and limit the talent now again I don’t know if tibs is that guy he really hasn’t had a ton of T I get Minnesota he had you know Carl Anthony towns and Jimmy Butler with some injuries that was his really most negative coaching experience he didn’t do a great job there and that team had Talent right maybe the most you know Chicago had Derrick Rose but not a ton Rob but there Boozer was really good or you know made a few off Noah was Noah on that Noah dang they I mean I think he kind of maximized that too but that that is the question what would a Paul George especially Rob at this late stage of his career does he want to play for a tips and it’s kind of a a quandry because on the one hand this Nick team isn’t that good without a coach like tips on the other hand will you attract the type the caliber of star that you need to get to the next level and if tibs is your coach will you Chris be healthy enough to make a real run the the the the track record says no how much of this do you put on him injury not all some because because there’s a pattern and it’s happened before it’s not the first time or whatever and and and there’s some to that Chris you could look at guys who are banged up under tibs and uh how much uh how much he he has these guys do it Lindsay brought it up these this stuff goes around the NBA they know you know what I mean you know what we doing in practice like this dude is like killing us are you crazy man I wouldn’t want to play for him and then in the end of the season you you don’t have enough juice that’s not good yeah it’s it’s really it’s interesting I I mean maybe we should get a maybe we’ll get a doctor on Rob one one of these day this week to talk about it but um the injuries you look at Rob were not I mean ojan anobi had the hamstring injury that’s one you might be a to pin on tips uh bogdanovic had a ankle injury he just stepped on the dude’s foot turned his ankle so you can’t blame that can happen to anybody jayen Brunson breaks his hand just hitting we think it was hitting Tyrese howerton’s thigh on a fast break that’s just kind of a freak thing uh Julius Randall you know we know you can’t blame his injury was it the shoulder on um you know that that’s just the type of thing that could happen so you can’t necessarily blame that on tibs and so that’s the qu I don’t know if you can put these injuries on tibs and then in the in and the abdominal strain Josh Hart I don’t so is that on tibs I don’t know no I get it Chris I and you look at the minutes in the regular season nobody played more than 35 minutes a game right Jaylen Brunson and julus Randle played 35 minutes a night so I I think in the playoffs Rob I mean they had so many people out that their uh you know list of quality players was RI very small and I think he was so if he has those guys is he playing them that long i i d I doubt it so I think tibs probably has learned a little bit and you know people people need to look at that when they if these free agents if they’re considering the Knicks really look at it yeah I think people felt great about them before yesterday and uh obviously that when you fall flat like that it takes some of the air out of your sales Chris uh but you’re probably right like the the the vibe or the feel is better than it was like to think that they feel to think that Brunson played as well as he did and they didn’t get any further than they did a year ago like that yeah but that’s all they had no I know I I know but I’m just saying that’s what it feels like to me

  1. TOM THIBODEAU IS TREATED LIKE HE IS BILL BELLICHECK WND HE AINT NEVER COACHED A TEAN TO THE NBA FINALS

  2. Seems like the Pacers picked the right day to shoot lights out. The Knicks played without their players the whole playoffs. They just got out shot on the wrong day.

  3. I would say it was more disappointing than anything, because of the injuries. Without all the injuries I think they beat the Pacers.

  4. I’m on the Knicks bandwagon!!! Left the Lakers! Hard working players and no excuses and pointing the finger! Brunson fan!!! Villanova Boys and Annouby!!! Love the team!

  5. Knicks fans might be worse than cowboy fans these guys really want a participation trophy for finishing 3rd in the East

  6. What was accomplished??
You have a real #1 player in Brunson and great core of role players, now you need just the right #2 to compliment him.

  7. Some people in media just got hate for the Knicks. Basically the entire starting 5 was down and they pushed it to 7 games in the 2nd rd still. If you ignore the injuries I can’t listen.

  8. Rob Parker sticking to his anti-Knick narrative. I was waiting for a reasonable rebuttal to all of Broussard's points, but heard nothing

  9. The problem of Thibs is he doesn't use he bench well in Chicago he have a great team what happens he exploited Pau Gasol and in the playoffs he run out of gas playing 45 minutes a game in the season at 38 and 39 years old to much for a big men and with Rose was he was a number one seed he was winning against a 8 seed and Rose injured his knee and they were winning by 15 with 2 minutes of that game and Rose never was the same

  10. We are not in the same spot as last yr. Yes we reached the same spot but you now have a top 5-10 player in the league and finished 2nd in the east. We beat Philly who was at full strength.

  11. The NY hate is real, Indiana needed 7 games to beat a team without 2 NBA players and 3 other very solid players while they were healthy! N
    Boston in 5 at worse

  12. It was a successful season in that they overachieved but if they don’t have a good trade or free agency move in the offseason then it’s going to feel like a missed opportunity.

  13. Coach Thibodeau needs to open up his rotation and spread the minutes out. Imo go to a solid 10 man lineup in the regular season for chemistry and rest. When the playoffs start your rotation is healthy. Coach feeds his main guys to the injury wolves. I'll call for a new gameplan before I call for a man's job. New York is championship caliber with a balanced rotation.

  14. It was same as last season 😂😂 only difference is knicks lost in 7 last year they lost in 6.. same round

  15. You will never win a title with Thibs. Stars won't play for him and the talent he has he wears out. Luol Deng.
