Rich Eisen: What Celtics’ Game 1 Narrow Escape vs Pacers Bodes for Boston’s NBA Title Hopes

it was terrible I shut it off get out of here man I shut it off 13 seconds left basketball 13 seconds left I shut it off and I went outside to hit balls off the tea with cage then we came back in TV still off read books for a little bit I walk out Sarah goes hey your game’s in overtime I go excuse me real I saw I saw photographs of Celtics fans trying to get back into TD Garden I saw that I saw people trying to because they had the same idea as you this thing’s a WAP yeah I don’t understand so you didn’t see you didn’t see the three-pointer that we’re all talking about didn’t see it didn’t see Tatum’s three didn’t see Brown’s three Burton look in the other direction turn it back on with 45 seconds left in overtime this is this is and you know what this is all part and parcel of it’s all part and parcel of your nonsensical stuff is I’d rather get blown out that rather blown up a heartbreaking loss toughen up is what I’m say you I can’t believe I’m saying this to you I can’t believe I could say this to you this team makes me so angry everyone in Boston is infuriated their coach stinks let me just tell you right now does that feel like to have your team win game one of the Eastern Conference fashion and still be angry about it what’s that like well it’s a Boston sports fan I guess you’re not happy you’re at your happiest when you’re at your most unhappy there’s a phrasee in parenting is that you’re you’re only as happy as your least happy child okay okay that’s true that’s the thing that’s it okay that’s the phrase in parenting in Boston Sports you’re only happy your happiest moment is when you’re at your least happiest moment it’s kind of weird it’s ridiculous but it’s also take that and then add on the layer of his nonsensical approach of I’d rather have my team blown out than have a really tight game and be in it and then bej people have my heart broken at the end you turn it off think like that yeah I turned it off cuz I was bad well man you missed out bro you missed out how does a Pacer fan feel today what feeling like hey we had a shot like we that that anybody who thinks that we’re not going to be in this series well guess what we can be and you know that’s what you’re hanging your head on right now anybody else who thought like our seven game series with the Knicks was so grueling that we would be just uh Running on Fumes against the Celtics and we weren’t well they have a better coach in this series and that goes a long way well the coach that you say is better in this series and you may be correct okay um said it was his bad while you were hitting balls with cage um Jaylen Brown is spotting up for three down three with seconds to go and Pascal sakam is late on getting back on Def getting getting to him in the corner on defense and sure enough he gets there in time for brown to have to get a little hitch in his GID up before he takes the three and instead of reaching out and fouling and he stands there with his arms behind his back and saying I’m not touching him ref we’re not going to have a four-point play and lose and it’s just like the weirdest shot like when we showing on our screen it’s just like he doesn’t get up to contest it he doesn’t even like take the risk of getting underneath him where it’s a flagrant foul he doesn’t even take the chance to try and block it he doesn’t want to get yeah he’s just standing there hoping that that will be enough to get Jaylen Brown Office three point game and you know I mean again the Celtics weren’t lighting it up from three which is their problem they at least uh saw the reverse happen to their opponent which is they’re the ones who had the turnover problems 22 of them Celtics had 11 steals last night so but that was just one of the weirdest moments cuz when Brown didn’t catch and fire and like reset himself I thought that’s when SE yakum could just reach out and grab him reach out and grab him grab him up but hey that might happen in the act of shooting so suddenly Jaylen Brown’s got three shots at the line I’d rather have him take the I’d rather take my shot at winning this game that way than just letting Brown shoot a three over a much taller man who’s not using any height disadv height advantage or or anything I think he putting his arms behind his back saying I’m not fouling him I’m not lining up on a two-minute report yeah you know so after the game Rick Carlile kind of raised his hand like you know how players want the scores table to say h it’s on me which they rarely do anymore so this is what Rick car all to say the game uh about the game after this this loss is is totally on me with 10 seconds in regulation we should have just taken the timeout Advanced the ball um and found a way to get it in and and made a free throw or two and and ended the game but uh it didn’t happen and uh we made some other mistakes but um our guys just need to concentrate on fighting the way they fought in this game from start to finish and we’ll be back Thursday so he’s talking about their own offensive possession that didn’t lead to more points on the boards it wouldn’t have mattered if Pascal cakam just let Jaylen Brown shoot the three but that’s the shot that everyone’s talking about today they’re not talking about the strategy right beforehand yeah but if if he does call a timeout in advance at the ball which they should have just that whole play was just a cluster like seak com’s running towards Boston’s hoop full speed he goes to catch the ball goes out of bounds even if he catches the ball there his momentum’s going to carry him out of bounds he’s not going to be able to do anything so that essentially to me is when the game was lost I mean but how do you not foul up three how do you not do it dribling off his knee and going out a b they 20 they had 22 turnovers last night I mean that you can’t I mean and and um there was no switch on the screen which is how seak ended up on jayen Brown like McConnell should have switched so much credit they turned it over 22 times they had an insane free throw uh disparity like Boston got to the line so many times they only had three free throws at one point in the game Indiana and they went shot lights out and they have great coaching they have really tough hard noos players and they gave the Celtics all kinds of problems last night when Boston had all the rest I don’t want to hear the excuses they had the home court Indiana needed to win that game they should have won the game and now you got to win four out of the next six and that seems really really difficult certainly if uh porzingis is back for the line share those six you know that you know they’re expecting him back game four it’s entirely possible and Chris like I asked you yesterday because hadn’t really played a game of real relevance in so long how did you think that that would affect them and they pulled out they pulled out the game all their previous play they’ve only had two two playoff games with clutch minutes which is you know a couple of possessions late in the game their games have either been 20 point wins or 20 point losses how are they going to respond and they got super lucky yeah but luck you got to take luck in consideration right Rich it’s all part of it and and certainly if uh the luck is allowing a clean look at three for one of the best Shooters in the game this is what Jaylen Brown had to say afterwards welcome to the NBA Playoffs um you just got to manage your emotions of the game Anything Can Happen the game is not over until the final whistle um the F the final buzzer sounds um and that was a good example of that you know we was able to turn him over a little bit towards the end um one with Hal Burton on the sideline and I was able to get the deflection off of seaka and that just extended the game and it’s not over till it’s over and um we was found a way to win this game at the very end hey man listen I know they won 60 games it’s just not going to be easy that’s all it’s not going to be easy and and the Pacers prove that you know they can they’re they’re they’re not going to just shrink because they got to this point and that the reason why they won the seven games I’m sure again a lot of my friends in New York City would say well if um they had Julius Randall and if they had ogn and movie and if they had Bogdan bogdanovich and if they had hold on a minute I’m not done yet if they had Josh Hart without that abdominal strain and obviously the final unkind break the final straw that broke the Knicks hand was Jaylen Brunson suffering that injury that’s be that as it may the Pacers showed up and they almost came away with the win they played great seven guys in double figures dude 60 wins just doesn’t matter anymore it just doesn’t matter anymore and and I think maybe this will be helpful in the cause Chris because I mean what they they they got blood they got bloodied once in their previous two series both at home and those games weren’t close you know so again again like this is this is good to get the juices flowing think battle tested grit shout out Drew holiday played 48 minute shot 10 of 16 was awesome last night but look got to have more bench production Sam Hower can’t just play 9 Minutes Luke cornette can’t play 13 Al Horford is 800 years old he can’t play 40 minutes brother this is the scoop and this is the honest truth and you know it too and we’ll see how they handle it they’re a 60- win team that everybody thought the entire season long the problem for them would be in the form of the bucks with Giannis and Lillard or in the form of the Sixers with MB that doesn’t matter they should they should have dropped game one I get it I’m just saying to you that in the it would be in the form of a problem coming out from the West whether it’s the defending champs or even the the young studly Thunder all of them have been removed from the equation every last one of them so now an easy this is now that sort of sensibility and those are external those are external conversations those are external and they can say that they don’t hear it or not but the bottom line is this is the Celtics Championship to lose 1,000% and how they the co should be fired it it should all be blown up and how do they handle that and does it come to roost in a playoff game in a crucible and the answer last night was no Jaylen Brown did make the shot that he was afforded to give the Celtics to tie the game and despite what the Pacers may have should have done with their offensive set what they should have done defensively Jaylen brown with all his money that he got instead of other players that you would consider potentially being worthy of being bestowed the richest contract in the NBA he’s the highest paid he made the shot it doesn’t go off the iron it’s not long it’s not an airball he stuck it and then when overtime was graced upon you while you were what reading books okay when it was being father of the year at least while it was good night Moon it wasn’t good night Boston all right because Tatum showed up in the overtime okay he showed up and the defense showed up so they did what they were supposed to do why are you so upset cor well because upset in the way that it happened that’s why I’m so up and I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of games with these guys and they just always blow it they never do what they should blow it bro that’s the thing the 60 win Celtic fan thinks they should take the Pacers who are fresh off a bruising series The Wood who got seven games luckily and again this is the Northeast Corridor way of saying it because the Knicks were the ier boers they weren’t full strength at all and they’re the ones who get through they should be told welcome to the NBA Playoffs kids we’re a 60- win team we’re going to spank you you have no shot certainly when porzingis is coming back in the game four and instead they had to pull it out by the hair of their chinny chin chins and it doesn’t matter it’s still 1 and the question is is do they handle the pressure over the next necessary seven wins or not because I’ll tell you one team that’s definitely not going to wilt under any other pressure If you see them are the Timberwolves catch the rich eyes and show every single day on the Roku Channel 12 to3 Eastern for free

  1. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are 3-0 in the playoffs against Joel Embiid and 2-1 against Giannis in the playoffs can we please stop acting like it wouldn't have been more likely than not that the Celtics beat them this season to

  2. Brockman the drama queen at it again. Doesnt seem like a real Celtics fan. The Celtics won the game they usually choke away. The team is improving without porzingis. Be happy.

  3. If it was golden state that won they’d be talking about how great the warriors are in the clutch and how they forced the other team into the errors

  4. I watched the whole game from start to finish. Thats what a fan does. We don't shut it off early. We don't leave the stadium 🏟️ .

He's not a fan. He's vv casual. Tighten up. lol

Bad coach? Joe drew up a good play & knew how many timeouts he had. 👀

I'm a Philadelphia Eagles fan. I watched Michael Vick against the Giants in the miracle in the new meadowlands. Start to finish.

You never turn the game off.

  5. Brockman is the worst kind of fan. Turns the game off then isn’t happy when we win against all odds down 3 with 10 to go. Cries about wanting tatum to show up…HE DID! He scored the second most overtime points in Celtics postseason history! He’s such a miserable person.

  6. Pacers get HALF the fouls on them called, we're having a different convo today, mistakes notwithstanding.

  7. Seriously Brockman, get over it! I never shut the TV off and I never gave up on the Celtics… Lets go baby…#18!!!

  8. God bless! Jesus Christ is King and saves and is the way! Psalms 62 – "Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken." Jeremiah 29:11 – "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

  9. At this point I rather the media not even cover the Celtics. No matter how much success this team has its only negative takes about them. And I have never seen a winning coach get disrespected like Joe Mazzulla. Ime Udoka got fired on his own. And the Celtics were doing the same thing under Brad Stevens. But because they made the Finals in one year of having Udoka, all of a sudden he's Phil Jackson now. Let's see how far he can get that Houston Rockets team

  10. Celtics are 9-2 in the postseason and 7 wins away from the title.

Over the past 20 seasons, the champion has averaged 6 playoff losses.

That means the Celtics are ahead of schedule, getting 7 wins and giving up 4 losses is reasonable even for this team which all the haters say the sky is falling even after wins.

  11. The Pacers had an insane shooting night and the Celtics couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat for long stretches and the Pacers still lost. That was more than likely the worst game the Celtics will play this series and they lost. Demoralizing defeat

  12. The sports writers and talking heads are the only ones taking the Pacers lightly. They score and they score a lot.

  13. Chris forgets one thing….Carlisle has won a ship and clearly didn't coach well to close the game and Joe M could be the underdog in coaching, yet until they are defeated now or in the finals (if it happens), he has taken the C's to 2 ECF in a row…

  14. Halliburton should read scripture- he choked! he was talking smack after beating a depleted Knick team? Ok- ‘those who exalt themselves will be humbled and those who humble themselves will be exalted’

  15. And they wonder why the Celtics play so shitty at home because the home fans suck. Spoiled brats for a team that has one title since the 80s. – A Rational Celtics Fan

  16. As much as it would fill me with joy to watch BOS get bounced, the Pacers just squander game one to much better team. They aren't last seasons' Heat and I don't believe they can punch above their weight four out of the next six.

  17. Chris stop crying bro 😂. We won!! We’re inconsistent and we know it, but hey it’s 1-0. GO CELTICS ☘️☘️☘️. Not gonna lie I turned the game off but tuned back in rite before JBs 3 😅

  18. I'm with Brockman on this one. I had Super Bowl 51 turned off. Checked ESPN right before the Amendola 4th down conversion in the 3rd quarter. Falcons win percentage at that was 98.1… Biblically, there is no mention of the word "luck." Simply put, everything has a chance of happening.

  19. Well Rich, you've never won anything before. Your teams have never given you the feeling the Celtics have given the fans. No surprise whatsoever that a Jets fan doesn't understand the disappointment of watching your SUPERIOR team, slagging off.

  20. Listening to a grown man cry like the way brockman does is such an annoying listen… I'll stay away from these videos 😂😂

  21. Brockman, get a grip. Seriously, get a grip. Indiana shot out of their minds. Boston did not shoot great from 3 but still found a way to win. We played great defense, and the Pacers are not going to shoot that way every night.

  22. Also, sweeping every series by 30 points a game is not realistic. Oh, we suck at home in the playoffs. We’re 5-2 at home so far this year in the playoffs and closed out both previous series in game 5 at home. We have actually played well so far at home in the playoffs this year.

And we’re without a critical player still. But instead of being glad we’re finding ways to get it done and take care of business anyway, we’re going to be all mad and critical that we’re not winning every single game in blowout fashion. At the end of the day we’re 9-2 in the playoffs so far this year. What do you want?

  23. If you turn a game off or leave a game early you give up any right to talk about the game. It should also warrant a next game suspension where you can't watch the next game. Marky mark leaving THE SUPER BOWL out of all things bc his son was 'sick'. Foh, that's a cop out. Hitting golf balls with a 4 yr old bc you're mad your team is losing? Banishment. Sore losers are worse than sore winners. At least a sore winner eventually gets humbled by a terrible loss. Sore losers are never happy no matter what. This isn't just a Boston thing either.

  24. 10 seconds left I was walking about of the restaurant I was watching the game at. I'm bound turnover stopped me at thr door lol.

  25. That's a great point that hadn't occurred to me, boston not having played a game of real significance for so long. Not even the first two rounds of the playoffs but even all the way back to the last few weeks of the regular season. Who knows, maybe this game one was the real wake up call the team needed. Who knows.
