Do the Cleveland Cavaliers need to trade Darius Garland?

Do the Cleveland Cavaliers need to trade Darius Garland?

today’s show my soon to be retired co-host Chris Manning and I are about to talk about Cleveland’s franchise point guard Darius Garland and his supposed trade demands but before we get started I want to let you know that Today’s Show is brought to you by FanDuel today’s episode is brought make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus bets without any with any winning $5 bet that’s 150 bucks with any winning $5 bet just visit fanduel.com loock on to get started for those who don’t know within seconds of the C season ending sham trania Joe Varden and Jason lordy the athletic reported that Darius Garland’s representation clutch Sports CEO Rich Paul would discuss a potential trade with the team’s front office as in Cleveland’s front office if Donovan Mitchell decides to stay on a long-term contract extension the report also noted that rival Executives believe the Cav will have to evaluate the fit of Mitchell and Garland seriously and ultimately may have to choose one or the other with that said we did talk about Mitchell likely resigning this summer and uh the question is now should the Cavs cave and honor Darius Garland supposed demands Chris I’m going to pass the book to you do you think they should I mean if they if you’re if you’re keeping Donovan if that’s what happens then yeah I think you owe it to Donovan to try to build the best team around him and I think we’re two years with those two guys and it has hasn’t worked how it should and this is a short-term League this isn’t a league where you have forever in a day to maximize what you have you kind of you got to do it and they haven’t Cent each other as well as you would have thought even if they they I don’t think they hate each other by any stretch imagination or anything like that but just basketball wise it hasn’t worked and they’re not making each other better it doesn’t feel like they make each other better in a basketball sense so I I think so and I think if you’re saying how do I improve the team R Donovan Mitchell who is the only guy on this team that I 100% sure as a Bonafide playoff guy coming out of this year your Avenues are you trade you don’t have a lot of picks because you traded them for Donovan Mitchell so your moves are trade Darius Garland trade Jared Allen and trade Evan Mobley I so I I think this is absolutely on the table it should be on the table and it it absolutely should be explored if if not executed and for context uh ESPN’s Brian windhorse did say on the radio uh we’re recording this on Tuesday but he did say this to ESPN Cleveland of the Cavs will entertain extending Moy Mo expects a full rookie ma extension so I I would assume that Mo’s off the table and I agree like you are going to have to explore the Garland and um Allen markets which we’ll talk more about Jared Allen for Wednesday May 22nd show um and we’ll kind of focus in more on that then but for with Garland it’s a little tricky just because I agree like they haven’t complemented one another super super like the way I think a lot of us maybe had hoped there’s been I I would say a step backwards after how they coexisted mesh last year I think there was a lot of yourt my turn last year and I think them trying to play more forcibly off the ball with you know just turning into exaggerated urn my turn just kind of makes it hard to compliment one another and the end result is marginal at best like with Darius scarland Evan Moy and Jared Allen on this team this is a playing team as we know um mobile rookie season they made the play in and they flamed out in spectacular fashion with two years in a row now the Cavs are the four seed in the Eastern Conference and I think just you know that’s not a detriment to Donna Mitchell’s of Donovan Mitchell’s ability or you know what the Cavs had built with Garland M and Allen it’s just you know those two have struggled to Coexist on the court together and I think that is kind of just you know the Paradox in of itself like is it a coaching thing or is it just these two just can’t coexist and it could be a little bit of both but it can just get tricky if the Cavs are willing to call Garland Bluff or clutch’s Bluff and say that they aren’t going to trade him and kind of try to maybe work this out cuz I thought of it as reading it and I’m sure people have too but there’s like parallels to when Kyrie demanded a trade obviously it’s not the same where Kyrie went out of LeBron’s Shadow but there this team has can I just say one thing about that there’s here’s the difference here’s just the difference that that to me Kyrie IR chionship exactly Kyrie Irving hit the greatest shot any Cleveland Cavaliers is ever going to hit and was part of the greatest offense in any Cav any Cavaliers offense that is ever going to exist the 2016 17 Cavs offense darus Garland has never had a high as high as Kyrie Irving he’s never been as good as I think Kyrie Irving’s Peaks um you can also say uh Darius has never gotten the playoffs in to it has yeah it like there is the I understand like the the the parallels with clutch and and ivly Kyrie is not you know clutch you know a clutch client but still I I think I think the I think the the difference with Kyrie is like you had clearly like LeBron in his prime so like everything felt like you’re everything is right now maximized like I think Donovan feels a little bit like that but it doesn’t feel quite as weighted in the sense that it’s Donovan it’s not LeBron like I think things feel a little bit different that way just because it’s it’s not LeBron I understand that point it’s just like it’s a little different to me just because of that and frankly these Cavs just like they haven’t proven that they’ve earned that level of like fervor in the way that those Cavs did I think well then that’s kind of my point is like can the Cavs make that argument to Darius and Rich Paul and just say like listen you haven’t yes you are part of this turnaround and everything but like you haven’t done a ton comparatively like what Kye did in terms of hitting the biggest shot in franchise history and that kind of leads to the point or the thought of like can this situation be salvage or will Garland and clutch just escalate things because Rich Paul is cold blooded in that sense where he will do what is best and right by his client every step of the way and he’s willing to be the punching bag so Darius doesn’t have to kind of get dragged like he could be but I don’t know like it is an interesting thought process just because like Darius has done some things but he hasn’t done things at a level where like yeah he demands a trade because there’s a player that’s sticking around whereas like the cats can be like let’s try and fix this situation with like a new coach or something like that as they head into uh training camp this year like I don’t that’s like a thought I have in the back of my mind is like can they drag this out or do they just kind of honor it and just move on this summer I think I think the other thing though is like that yes maybe the coaching has has part of it but I think these guys NBA players and the way this league works is guys have are individual they’ve individual agency like derus scarland might just feel and his agent his Camp might just feel playing with Donovan Mitchell does not serve me yes I making a Max rookie extension yes I’m making a lot of money but I was an All-Star before this I made an All-Star team I averaged more points I had more assists like I’m not saying it is that simple but like part of it might just be like I don’t feel like I’m playing my best basketball in this scenario I feel I could go be a better me outside of Donovan Mitchell that it it could just be as simple as that that he doesn’t feel like he’s being his best on top of everything else like it it it might be that and and there’s a coaching change isn’t going to solve that even if you sold him on ideas like you could sell guys on ideas they also have to then be executed then what if the ideas don’t the way you want them to that that presents a whole other challenge yeah I mean if is for fist we’d all be drunk and what’s on paper can’t be the same in execution I absolutely agree it’s just I do the C do the Cavs have time to wait either is the other problem no I mean unless Donovan Mitchell signs the dotted line like the very first day free agency yeah they can drag out this process as long as they want because they can really he’s Garling for the maximum opt op maximum return or in Rich Paul’s hand just to say like listen we tried our best but we’ll entertain this these trades we need you to report to Camp etc etc but I think Mitchell is the Lynch pin and obviously if he signs Garland’s supposed trade demand is going to come into effect and then like that’s where it gets really messy so it does hinge on Mitchell Mitchell I’d say yeah and then also like don’t you also I think you could argue and counter what you said though you could AR You could argue that like with Mitchell you owe it to him just to go all in and give him what he deserves to try to win right now so like why are you going to hold on for maxim with Carin you should probably just go for it you know no I agree and on darious sides of things like people have been trying to um inject their Paras social relationship with the point guard like this doesn’t make sense they hug and love each other and like Chris had noted like I don’t think it’s a personal thing like I think these two guys do like each other maybe could be like a big brother little brother thing we won’t find out until after anything happens we might we might never we might never that’s also it too like we also don’t really have a right to know cuz it’s a personal It’s A Private Matter to and should be behind closed doors other than just like a publicly being known he wants to move on but to your point like before Donovan Mitchell got here Darius was an All-Star he had career best numbers sure he matched in the first year at Donovan but it was kind of staggered and stilled offense but Garlin kind of got the treatment that he was the air apparent to the franchise he was the guy he was the franchise point guard and then they zagged when they should have probably zigged at times I mean no absolutely 10 times out of 10 that trayer Donovan Mitchell but from like an ego standpoint or a standpoint I can understand maybe if like Darius is just kind of frustrated because this isn’t a good situation for him playing wise if he feels that way and also just like he might feel slighted by the fact that like was giving the impression he was going to be one of the dudes for this franchise obviously him and Moy with Allen making less money at that point just because of extensions and but I I do wonder if he’s just like I’m kind of fed up and I’d rather just go play in a different situation like that makes sense too like this is a very hard year for Garland both on and off the court like he might just want like a complete complete reset in a new situation and that might be healthy for everyone but I don’t know I just think I agree um that the Cavs don’t really need to drag this out just because I think also it’s a disservice to Garland too even though he’s the one demanding the trade also like you want to do right by Mitchell right away and also like kind of reaffirm Mitchell’s commitment to this team and not maybe have him have second thoughts or kind of be looking elsewhere like okay I’ll play out this year but I’m already thinking about like demanding a trade next offseason like you go all in as quickly as possible and we we’ll kind of see where it it ropes out from there I agree all right cool well we’ll talk about actual like Darius Garland destinations including popular one in the San Antonio Spurs but got to give a quick word from today’s first sponsor FanDuel today’s episode which as you know is your team every day so Chris um it kind of seems like it’s in The Ether that the San Antonio Spurs are a team that’s kind of you know taking stock of Garland and things like that and let’s ask yeah things of that nature but like at surface level just looking at the Spurs do they make the most sense I think they do in my eyes at least of a possible um Garland destination in the event the Cavs you trade him it’s one of them right I think it’s a one that would give him like a lot of Reign and a lot of freedom like it’s just a a team that clearly needs him right like it’s a team that that clearly needs him to to be him which I think would appeal to Darius Carlin I don’t you know is the market exactly what he wants I don’t know if Cleveland for San Antonio is making the biggest difference for him if that matters to him I I don’t know how much it matters to him but I I I will interject I think the whole Market thing is kind of a fallacy like we talked about this a while back like Donovan Mitchell is a private Jett he can fly to New York whenever he wants to catch a Mets game if you wanted to like it’s not guys I think it does matter like I do but I think it just like I don’t think everyone I think it just depends on the guy like I do think it just depends on the guy and it’s different when it’s like if you’re close to like Cleveland’s very close to New York like Donovan did say it’s like it was closer for me to get from Cleveland to New York on a on a jet than it was like Utah to New York like that is that doesn’t make a qualitative difference just for what cuz you do spend like a lot of time in these cities there’s a reason guys just like dip out and all that stuff um it like for Garland if he wanted to go somewhere where he could just be himself like that would make sense to be in a way and he like they have the they have the money for him they the question about like what you’re getting back I think is an interesting one as far as like what Cleveland is getting back there and and what it does for them but as far as like a if okay you’re trying to get gar Garland and his team are trying to get him somewhere or he wants to end up somewhere where hey I can go be me and by the way also get paired up with another really I mean arguably the the best young Talent League I think unquestionably the the best young Talent league in Victor wanyama like there you go that’s a pretty good landing spot for for him the first rookie to be named all defense First Team all defense like yeah uh Not a Bad season for Wendy of course but I agree I think when you look at the Spurs they’ve tried to do um a lot of different things of point guard like they tried Trey Jones they tried um from Baylor um soan yeah Jeremy soan they they don’t have a point guard they just don’t no they don’t they don’t have a true point guard on this team they do have an overabundance of wings which I think would kind of intrigue Cleveland at least in terms of what worked last season and just whatever maximizes if it’s just Donovan Mitchell on the floor surrounding him and a big whether that’s Moy or Allen with shooting and I think the Spurs have some interesting players it’s just how bold are the Cavs willing to be just because it is fair that like when a trade demand is public um you know the team that is trying to negotiate away to get the player out of there to satisfy their demand is at a slight disadvantage it depends on who you’re negotiating with and the Spurs can be kind of tricky but like you like pie in the sky scenario like if you’re able to get like Devon Vel a draft pick or two from the Spurs maybe even Malachi Brandon included in the trail like yeah that’s an ideal scenario but the problem is is Devon Vel is also probably like a core not a core probably is he is a core guy for the Spurs like you he is a guy who Vel vel’s also not as good as people I don’t vel’s he’s fine he’s okay I think he I mean in terms of the WIS that are tradeable for the Spurs I’d say he is number one on the list yeah I don’t I just he’s fine like he’s he’s okay like I don’t think I think he is he’s a if you look at like the the the analytics on him about like a little above League average in EPM like League average in a bunch of efficiency stats like he’s okay like he’s a little small the the creative stuff has not come along as much as you would want I think he’s a little slight defensively I I think like the wings that they have it’s like like him Kel and John like all their wings are just all kind of fine and it’s like you got like the problem with the Spurs really to me with them as like a trade package team is that like vasel is he already got paid and he’s fine Kell Johnson got paid a little bit less but he’s fine soan is like I don’t know what to do with him and then like all the other guys that’s like I don’t know what you are and I don’t know what you do so it’s like I it that’s the problem with them it’s like you’re relying on picks which are those picks going to be good when theyve w Bama they have cap space like I I Vel is fine he would be like a good rooll guy but like are you is that enough are you cool with that if you’re Cleveland like that’s the question I think you’re asking with any of this is like okay are you exchanging Garland are you cool with exchanging Garland for for what I think you’re going to be like wellp paid role guys or are you cool with exchanging Garland are you trying to aim higher than that and like is his value that I think that’s maybe what we’re going to find out here is like is Vel who I think is like an okay roll guy 2020 draft like decent guy big Wing big big Wing at terms of height little slight is that enough for you and if you say yes then okay you do it but I think he’s fine I don’t think he’s he’s not like a you’re not exchanging a guy who made an Allstar team I think could make one again in the future for a guy who I think I don’t I don’t think like Deon Vel is going to make an All-Star team in the future no I don’t think he will either but I he’s fine yeah yeah he’s fine but like I think he’s a high-end role player and if you’re looking in that vein sure but like yeah like you said I think you’re really looking at the draft compensation the Spurs have which they have a lot from Atlanta who could still be a very bad team next year I mean they have the Raptor first round pick this year I I highly doubt the Spurs are giving up a top four pick in this year’s draft especially if like they do still pursue the point guard route but I agree like they have like a an abundance of wings um that are okay to like they’re the maxers vein like they can be highend to very high-end role players if they’re maximized in a certain situation I don’t think you know just because the Spurs have not been great over the last few years as they’ve gone through this rebuild but way they could look at it like yeah if you’re like and you said if you’re Cleveland if you agree with like okay say the offer is instead Kellin Johnson like Zach Collins and mult like a first round pick from Toronto and then next year’s first round pick from Atlanta and if you’re the Cavs like you can use those draft picks as leverage to maybe make a bigger move if you use those R guys as leverage to make a bigger move as well like yeah that that could make sense on paper but I think that’s just the weird thing with Garland is like it’s kind of hard to gug what his Market is because on paper like I agree like he does have the potential and probably will be an Allstar again someday and um this season’s kind of an aberration because of injuries and um his personal St you’re you’re you’re betting that if you’re a team if you’re the Cavs that’s how you’re selling it at the very least you’re saying this guy made an aler team we’re going to you’re going to spin it is that at the very least yeah yeah yeah and that’s just like the weird thing about it is you can’t fully gauge the whole situation cuz you just don’t know like that like I think that kind of circles back to the question of like okay the Cavs just make it like not the most attractive offer for Garland and they may not feel really like realistically inclined to kind of move on from him and just kind of test the waters but also like then it comes with the parallel like what do we do to make donov and Mitchell happy and it just becomes like a bit of a pingpong thing and it’s hard for me to kind of figure out like like I said generally sat down and thought I’m like okay the Spurs on paper make sense cuz they really need a point guard um I think there’s other teams as well like the Spurs just make the most sense and like you said I think it’s the ideal situation where you give Garland a partner where they will maximize each other him and wanana in terms of just the playmaking and the passing and I think Garland is you know comfortable playing off the ball with a big man if they’re using him s like some Evan Mo stuff too like he’s not going to be doing it all the time like he was with Mitchell on the floor and the Spurs have like wings that are very comfortable not having the ball in their hands and getting it but it’s just like you’re not going to get the most attractive trade package back like if they got Jeremy Sohan back from the Spurs I would just ask what are we doing here um because like if you’re trading Jared Allen sure again we’ll talk about that later on in the week but if you have like soan and MOB that’s such a bad court right there because there’s no spacing whatsoever between the two even if soan does try to take threes he’s not like a reliable shooter out there and neither is moy right now yeah soan you don’t know what he is you’re kind of a team who needs guys that fit Mitchell that’s a guy who doesn’t I don’t think you know what he fits in any situation so like what are you doing trading for it’s it’d be a real weird one to me I 100% agree and let’s just hit pause for now on that and we’ll talk more about some other trade destinations in the upcoming segment but got to do it again folks got ads today’s episode of Locked on more pick less it’s that easy okay we are back I Evan damal that is my soon to be retired co-host Chris Manning on your left I guess my right you say retired like I’m getting I’m getting taken out to a farm I mean you’re retiring from the locked on brand I just want to remind people to appreciate you while you’re still here that’s all I’m not dying to be clear yeah I appreciate it I’m not dying though I’ll be around sub stack and just B yeah I’ll be around not dead yeah you’ll be around and The Ether but yeah other teams said like I guess when I was thinking about it like let’s say it’s like the the Brooklyn Nets which you be comfortable if they offered you like male Bridges and Dorian vny Smith for Darius scarland is part of a trade I know I listed like a three te trade but okay but I’m I’m I’m the ring ring it’s the Brooklyn Nets Mel Bridges yeah I’m taking that and I’m hanging on the phone before they realize what they’re doing why are the Nets doing that like sell me on why the Nets are trading Mel Bridges for Darius Scarlet because the Nets are like a perfectly mediocre team and male Bridges is a very high-end complimentary I think he’s the highest end of complimentary role players boarding on maybe Allstar SL star they didn’t want to give up they didn’t want to give up four first round picks for him and they’re going to give him up for Darius Garland that’s all I’m asking well then you ask yourself this is the potential Factor like do you think you can have a franchise point guard that you can absolutely build everything around possibly um and also the Nets just aren’t very good either so they may finally come to the realization they need to hit reset also like Bridges could be one of those guys that asks for a trade too despite living in New York and being reportedly happy like I don’t know the NBA is weird and maybe like Brooklyn enters the chat and they’re like you know what I think we have stretched this thing out as far as we could we could do it but yeah um if male Bridges was the offer I think you’d roll with that and okay I’ll just throw the with her out here um the Cavs will get M Bridges Dorian finy Smith the Orlando Magic would get Darius Garland the Brooklyn Nets would get goab vat Anthony black and a multitude of picks from Orlando possibly this is a draft night trade the Cavs give up number 20 as well because the Nets are just hitting a hard reset on the entire situation but I think the Nets are also just kind of hard to evaluate but I just think they suck I think they need to kind of just pull the plug on this entire operation trade the guys they have for maximum returns and this is the parable we were asking before in terms of just like the Spurs or any other team evaluating Garland like this is an investment and you believe that you can tap into the guy that was an All-Star player uh in 2021 as a guy who you can build your entire franchise around as your franch point guard he is if he has the right like off ball players next to him is a guy who can raise your ceiling high enough to get you to the play and and maybe eventually the playoffs as he grows and matures I think that’s the argument but I also just can understand your sentiment CU like Mel Bridges is the ideal return if you’re the cabs like that is your preferred option but you have to ask like what are the Nets when to give up and then like that turns into the mky conversation of gez Louise the Nets do not have really anything else that is enticing outside of Mel bries that is like immediate needs for the Cavs yeah I just I don’t think this is I don’t think the Cavs are getting Bridges I put that’s what I put dream on it this this is like did you do did you do like hallogen like some like hard narcotics and like wake up in a different reality and you this happens this just do I don’t think this is realistic fair enough um Well’s just think about Garland I said the most likely return the Cav I get for Garland if like looking at just the marker right now like I I feel like they would just if the team rushes it like it could be a Brandon Ingram type return like it’s a Ingram from Garland swap of New Orleans or it’s Kellin Johnson but let’s just talk about the teams I guess like would you hate the fit for Garland with Orlando a team that clearly needs a guard that can hit threes and handle the basketball cuz they don’t have any of those shooting threats no but I but I no but I I think you have to look at it as like if we’re locked I think we have to look at it as like yeah when are you getting back and I think if I think you have to look at it in two ways if you’re the Cavs you have to acknowledge that like you’re you’re probably dealing him because it just hasn’t fully worked and number two you have to understand he’s somewhat of a distressed asset he just is like he’s he’s had a really bad year and even if you want to bet on his bounceback and you will sell that that way and that’s what you’ll argue in you know when if and when coob yman speaks at the end of the SE for his end of the season M availability he’ll say you know we believe in Darius all this stuff and we believe his best basketball’s ahead of him all that stuff like he will get viewed as a distressed AIC cuz he had such a down year and the year before wasn’t his best either you will like it’s just the reality so like something like a Brandon Ingram swap where it’s like two guys who’ve had kind of blah kind of runs here like that that to me is the parameter we’re looking at if it’s like Ken Johnson like what are the Spurs adding to that would be my question that’s fair that’s fair and like even looking at the magic now like your return would be like they’re not the Cavs don’t want wend Carter Jr the the magic are not trading Palo banero or Mo Vagner or sorry not Mo Vagner fron Vagner and mo Vagner too let’s just say it like that like maybe you get Jaylen sugs out of return from Orlando and like it’s a combination of that and Jonathan Isaac like is that enough for you if you’re Cleveland no you have to more if you want if you’re going to sell high on Garland as high as you possibly can and just try your darnest to get that possible return and I think that’s just where the muddiness of it gets is yeah Garland is it’s a good way to put a distressed asset like what can he um get you in a possible return I think that’s a completely valid question and it also depends on how the rest of the league feels about Garland too because like I think he is a fun plug-and-play option for a lot of teams that need like a three-point shooting point guard that can handle the ball very creatively um but it’s just would have a public trade demand he didn’t have a good season last year so I agree I think like if you had swapped two guys that are just kind of having a down year and probably need to train change in scenery especially if like just the relationship is soured for them personally yeah I think an Ingram for Garland swap works but even like just looking at these teams and I think that’s just kind of something I’m glad you brought it up is just like okay how much are the Cavs willing to accept for Garland or is how much is the team willing to give up for Garland no team is going to be willing to give up their best players for a guy who had a down year last year is also demanding a trade yeah it look it’s a tough spot there’s going to be a line to walk here a needle to to thread here in a Darius Garland trade if it happens how they Cav do it’s going to be one of the defining Parts with the arm I don’t think there’s any way around that no I absolutely agree and we will talk about maybe a little less of a dow it’s still it’s a depressing subject if you’re a Die Hard like core 4 fan which Chris and I are poo pooing um but more so the fact that like yeah Jered Allen could get you some more interesting trade possibilities we’ll talk about that on next time on lockon Cavs 1. I mean a handful of insiders already echoed Rich Paul's plan AND that we are close to an extension with Donovan. So given the facts uhm yeah, we kinda need to trade DG. Mikal is an interesting piece to the puzzle and one I hadn't expected. So Spida/Strus/Mikal/Mobley/Allen would be our starting 5? Sounds great to me tbh

  2. The Cavs are stupid. I can’t believe they would trade away the entire team just to keep 1 guy who they can’t afford

  3. Paul pierce raised an interesting point. What if the coaching plan didn't allow garland to shine? What if the bickerstaff firing keeps both their all star guards?

  4. You boys are always late to the party! JB gets fired and you drop a podcast from earlier this week. Mac and UCSS were all over the JB coverage.
