It’s not new knowledge that Larry has been trying to get a WNBA team for a while. That’s why the city had those WNBA showcase games and had women like Nurse talk up the city to both the NBA and WNBA. It was all Larry trying to get a team, first through MLSE because of the money, and then when he saw Rogers was a misogynistic prick lord, sold some of his lucrative stake to fund it himself.
