Is there a future for the Knicks with Isaiah Hartenstein? | The Putback with Ian Begley | SNY

and I think one thing with the the salary number on OG like the Cap’s going to go up right so the percentage of the cap I think is how you look at this thing and if he’s you know 35 the percentage is going to be a certain number right now but it’s going to be a smaller percentage as you go forward and the cap increases especially after the next TV deal for the league um so we’ll see we’ll see but uh Isaiah hartstein obviously is’s another free agent for New York another question for them something they have to deal with hardenstein to me well I know this one of the reasons the Knicks didn’t want to go all the way up on a manual quickly I don’t know if it was a major reason minor reason but they wanted to have the financial wherewithal to reassign Isaiah hartstein so that tells you that they want to bring him back badly now they’re Limited in what they can offer hartenstein because of the collective bargaining agreement they have early bird rights on him I think they can go plus 16 plus annually to start and then you know the contract will have um standard it could have standard increases and uh so they give multiple years 16 17 a year obviously teams that have cap space can go north of that we know Orlando was right in there on hartenstein this Summer that the Nick signed him we know Orlando has cap space now I don’t know specifically where they’re looking if they want to invest big money in a big man but hartstein will be one of the top big men on the market Detroit um had interest had interest in Nick Claxton big time last summer so you know that tells you kind of where they may be on a big man Nick Claxton another free agent big man this summer expect him to go back to the Nets I would expect hartenstein to ultimately go back with the Knicks too but there’re going to be decisions to make there now when you look at the impact that he has had on this group this season Sean I’m just curious what did you do you value him as a guy where you say let’s do everything we can to bring him back you know the next half metch Robinson Jericho Sims pre shua more of a four not necessarily a five but they do have other bigs on the roster do you see him as a guy that you can’t let go uh yes I I do um just one for chemistry his consistency and you know I think it’s important if we’ve learned this year especially it’s important to have depth at the center position it’s important to have depth everywhere and so you know having Mitch and ihart uh gives us puts us in position going to have 48 minutes of very good Center play uh you know and I don’t want to knock uh but I I don’t want to depend on Jericho Sims um as a you know reliable option his minutes were pretty terrible this year the regression was sad so I definitely say you p is hardstein I think he’s a big part of what we do with this team on both ends of the floor I think the way he stepped up and made himself you know so Irreplaceable pretty much he stayed in the starting role he opened up the offense with his passing his offensive rebounding was excellent and his his defense outside of the playoffs was very solid as well so I definitely want to keep Isaiah hardenstein and I’m you know in the on the roommate show uh Jaylen Brunson and Josh Hart’s podcast which every Nick fan should be watching by the way not a Nick fan not watching it but um you know they had Isaiah hardstein on there and you know they were just talking about getting it done and him coming back and how he wanted to be here so keep that going Brendan is this something that you would want to keep going excuse me no matter the cost Mitch Robinson Isaiah hardenstein obviously gives the Knicks great depth at Center do you see this as a musthave for New York or could they use some resources elsewhere how do you view it well from being the Nicks announcer this is like one of my least favorite things because what everyone does is says oh I like hardenstein better than Mitch or I like Mitch better in hardenstein no no no no no no you need both of them because they offer so many different things as the two players they’re best friends on the team they support each other very much so to me they’re both guys who can play very effectively around the half of a game minutes thing now hartenstein the best thing he does offensively is pass the basketball but conversely when he does do that and he did it for a couple games Indiana series if he’s up at the elbow he’s at the top of the ghee in all the split game options then he’s not on the the offensive glass because he can’t be he’s 18 to 20 feet away from the basket but I still think that’s the best way to use him if you have them in the starting group and you know those four other guys he can be a great piece in that regard he is a phenomenal I sense where the ball should go past or the Clippers used them that way I don’t think Tom’s used them enough that way and I just think that could be a great Dynamic for the rest of the team he and Mitchell Robinson and even Sims are are great screeners and for all the dribble handoffs that you run and all the elbow and side pick and rolls that you run having really good screeners in hartenstein in Mitch in Sims that’s a big part of Jaylen brunson’s offense so you want this guy back he’s he checks many boxes but can we please stop with well I’m playing him over him no you need them both that’s how you have a really good team that’s how you get deep in the playoffs when you have nine 10 11 12 guys you can really count on

On The Putback with Ian Begley, SNY’s NBA Insider is joined by @TheKnicksWall’s Shaun Geddes and longtime NBA Broadcaster Brendan Brown to discuss the free agency of Isaiah Hartenstein. Will the Knicks re-sign Hartenstein to a new deal to keep him in New York, and what’s the best way to use him moving forward if he does come back?

  1. If the Knicks can afford cap wise to have both Robinson and Hartenstein, then fine, keep both.
If the Knicks have to choose, it's a no brainer, Hartenstein is your man.
I think he's one of the best big men in the league.
For instance, I would take him in a heartbeat over Porzingis, for example.
He rebounds better, protects the rim better and passes better than Porzingis.
He's also younger and more durable and, on top of that, he can hit the three if he's ever out there to do it.
Anyway, you have to hope that teams like Orlando and Detroit haven't noticed quite how good Hartenstein is.

  2. I don't know what people see in this guy. He has his moments, but he can't guard anybody, big or small. He has some decent rebounding games, but overall he is under 8 per game. If you sign him, don't pay him a lot. To me, this is the missing piece with the Knicks, they need a center. Both IHart and Mitch are backups, not starters. Mitch is signed for 3 more yewrs. Let IHart walk. Should have gotten Gafford when Mitch went down.

  3. Isaiah made a name for himself in NYC, he wants to stay AND win a championship. Just as Jalen, Julius, Hart, Robinson, Divencenzo, Thibs….Rose

  4. If the Knicks can’t afford him, you would resign him and I think it would be their best interest to actually resign him back

  5. As much as I want Mitch Rob to be here but best ability is availability and Mitch for the past couple years have injury issues. I would sign IHart back and I know that’s IHart right hand man but this is where business kicks in and that business decision may be tough but trade Mitch Rob and go into the draft to have a eye on Zach Edey…

  6. They should try to get the center from the bulls or pelicans if they are FA. If they can somehow get bridges from BK that would be wild

  7. They got a sign Ihart and make a move with okc for Mitch and simms for one of those young bench wings

  8. Jalen isn't just taking a paycut just because, hes doing so because he communicated with his teammates and organization on how to keep players to run it again next season. I don't see Ihart nor OG going anywhere in my opinion.
