ion college basketball podcast in the offseason it makes a lot of sense to bring back our family member he comes back to the reunion because he gets to help us figure out what college Prospect make the most sense for the Charlotte Hornets as he does cover both leagues and so let’s go fit or Misfit who are the prospects that makes sense for the Hornets roster Doug if you want to explain to the people what the rules are and it seems like you have another thing to address before we get started well I think the rules are pretty simple if uh if they if NADA thinks that they fit on this Charlotte Hornets roster as it’s currently constructed then then he says fit and if they don’t he says Misfit now okay my question to Nat would be what does he what do you qualify as a fit what what player what is it is it like character is it play style I mean what are you factoring in here when you’re factoring fit or Misfit I’m factoring in roster I’m factoring in play style I’m factoring in height I am factoring like wingspan combine measurables play like all of it matters like driving record maybe no no no no no that was last episode maybe just a little bit yeah maybe yeah but that was at last episode but like a lot of this is going to end up being one of those like you know me Doug everything has to make S it’s got to make sense in some sort of form or fashion okay but so let me stop you when you say fit do you mean that they have a place in the rotation like what when you’re talking about a six pick and a weak draft like what are your expectations for that player in terms of playing time not so simple is it no it is very much is because let’s let’s take a guy like Stefan Castle Stefan Castle is someone that is plug andplay you basically know he’s got a rotation spot on this roster in the top eight a guy like Donovan kingan it makes a little less sense in one regard and in in another because you don’t trust the back of Mark Williams he makes more sense now contrast that with a guy how um like Rob Dillingham he doesn’t make sense on this roster he is 61 170 with bricks in his pockets and he basically clogs up a spot when you start thinking about the fact that the Hornets have I believe either five or six guys that five or six guards that are under 64 on this roster and you have to question his basketball IQ if he’s playing with bricks in his pocket that doesn’t make any sense know why you would do that it doesn’t make any sense uh maybe unless you’re putting them in your shoes to make you taller but other than that I have zero clue uh Doug go ahead who are some of the prospects I know he gave us a tease but what are some of the prospects here with the fits in the so I think Stefan Castle is a fit right can we just declare him a fit obvious fit obvious fit that’s crazy to me because he says he wants to play point guard I last time I checked uh at least for now the Hornets have a point guard on the roster named lello ball and they’re about to pay him a lot of money all his bluff all the bluff if he is there you draft him and then ask him if he’s read the CBA call the Bluff and then you and then you call Charles Lee and say make sure you have taekwon doe lessons like get ready basically SC like at this point I understand that Stefan Castle feels like he should be more on Ball and there’s part of it that is very very admirable at the same point this this sounds like a lot of Agents speak this also feels like one of those things where like I don’t know if you’ve seen Ice Age I I’m specifically Ice Age 2 where you have the Queen Latifa character that thinks that like that’s the woolly mammoth that thinks that they’re a squirrel like you may think that you are inde DED a squirrel but you end up being a woolly mammoth like you can’t control these type of things so you may think you are a point guard you might not actually be a point guard at the next level you might be a wing that’s okay go go out there and play and make money kid and look if if Stefan Castle can come in and prove that he can be elite point guard then you know four five six years down the line that could actually be a benefit to the Charlotte Hornets so I I think you got a point or not even Elite right just have that capability and now you have both identities that you can take on whenever you hit the court right so I’m I’m totally with you that that I do view it somewhat as a decent thing if he has that confidence level as long as he doesn’t only want to play on ball then maybe we can do the Spin Zone thing and say wait this is actually a good thing that Stefan has that kind of confidence and he can come in give you some secondary ball handling if even if that’s the high-end outcome secondary ball handling is a good thing being able to move the basketball high IQ put it on the deck and not turn it over great stuff so I’ve already well I’ve already ridden him off he’s off he’s off my board um he’s not even he’s not allowed in the board anymore if he tries to his name’s not on the list if he tries to get in if he tries to like sneak in we’ll find out well we’re kicking Ste Stefan castle out of the Hornets Big Board club or shame uh but I’m I’m glad that that you know you’ve you’ve labeled him a fit here um can I have one more question about Stefan real quickly not at size does that concern you at all because I know you also subscribe to the idea of wanting Brandon to play too as his primary position does the size of Castle bother you no because because only simply because this is a weak draft as we pointed out I looking for and things that translate in like to the NBA at this point you if you can tell you tell there’s a six7 guy that has a decent wingspan that can guard multiple positions even if like I don’t expect him to start I don’t think he may not ever start he may end up being a kcp down the line but I’m not expecting him to start day one because again that’s just foolish especially as we say top 10 pick in a weak draft I am looking for the guy that has the most intangibles to build upon at this point is probably Stefan Castle because he is a jump shot away from being something that ends up being a good problem rather than a bad problem I wouldn’t blame the Hornets for drafting uh Castle just to have a point guard in summer league right for once the starting point guards only played what 60 games in the last two years that’s not necessarily a bad like if you draft him and it’s like hey we have a point guard that’s unreliable like we have to kind of draft him he might have that opportunity do we go rapid fire more so in the next segment Doug or do you have one more to feed to Nat well we know Dillingham that’s Misfit right yes all right let’s go next segment we’ll get more fits and misfits in this NBA draft okay that that’s your that yes on Dillingham that’s it we’ll move on we have more prospects to get to uh coming up next on the lockdown Hornets podcast don’t go to sleep on the Hornets just yet still have Ron Holland still have Reed Shepard which is dicey kind of a wild card would get we’ll get to more of those prospects coming up next on lockdown Hornets this next you are The Keeper of the sicko Satchel the sicko what was the other thing we did the the sicko sound off sio sound off you got it okay uh like a steel trap yeah yeah brilliant folks you are also The Keeper of the fits or Misfits game so tell Nat what Prospect is next on the list uh let’s go a guy that might be under size but can jump out of the gym Reed Shepard from Kentucky fit or Misfit Misfit but I have qualifications like my my whole thing is with Reed Shepard yes he is one one of the more skilled people in the draft yes he can shoot do you need another Hornets need that do they need an UND another undersized 6-3 guy like if you think he’s Jamal Murray cool I am not going to like that’s one of those comps where if he fits like a Jamal Murray fits it makes sense but at the same point you’re also talking about lamelo Ball’s there Brandon Miller’s there if you’re drafting Reed Shepard you’re moving Brandon Miller to the three and you’re getting you’re creating the same problem that you had with Terry roier here and I like Terry and we’re also talking about Terry like white Terry roier with less of a wing span than what Terry roier had this creates a little bit more problems to it now granted this is also a guy that can be very special and was very special despite the Oakland game in the tournament yeah that was bad I he’s closer to a misfit than a fit for me but I can hear the arguments to the contrary Doug did you agree with that I saw you may you the the last two episodes you’ve been making lots of faces like I I can’t I can’t even give my take because I want to hear what you have to say so badly what do you think about Reed I think he’s I think he is a a misfit uh because of the size but man you know when I watch him block Corner threes you know and and he’s getting so far off the ground I’m like oh man I think he fits like a pair of jeno jeans like they’re on there they’re not a tight fit remember those you remember those growing up kids with a jinko je I was not one of those kids shout out to the Insane Clown posy that’s right that’s how he fits you know it’s on there but it’s a little bit of a misfit yeah yeah man it sounds like we’re all intrigued but we we also it this is I’m so with you guys on this I think I lean Moore so Misfit but I will be pretty excited if they take him because there are there are a lot of things to like I still would not take him over a like I I think right now I’m probably leaning more Ron Holland I’m leaning more Stefon Castle too but the 42-in vert the defensive prowess that he can bring the over 50% three-point shooting on four attempts per game like is this just one especially when we talk about a week draft does the guy do a lot of things that bring him to a high floor that you just say even if you’re not a starter we’re bringing you in our system and we’re going to figure it the bleep out because in a draft that we’re so unsure of a lot of stuff man I can’t let that guy go to the Wayside I it would be easier I think it would be more of a fit the size is concerning for sure I I don’t like the size even the wingspan is bad like there the measurables aren’t good it would be a lot better too if lamelo ball was if he defended to his size which he doesn’t like there’s not a lot of functional strength when we talk about lamelo being 67 or 68 offensively you would actually hope that it comes into play a lot too but other than getting in passing lanes and deflecting some basketballs here and there I I would feel a lot better if lamelo could just absorb whoever was the two guard and then you put Reed on the one but lamelo you’re you’re hiding a decent amount and opposing offenses attack lamelo constantly I I just don’t the defensive back court fit that’s where I struggle but yeah I am intrigued I I’d be lying if I say I wasn’t I I’ll say like if Castle’s off the board if Holland’s off the board and if kingan’s off the board Then I then I would be okay with Reed but if they if they pass on any of those three guys for Reed Shepard that I have made questions but if they pass on look if they take buis over Reed I think that would be a mistake because I think because I think Reed right now has like legit scoring thing that you can use right now and bazis I think there are a lot more questions there so please ask me about him next okay balus fit or Misfit I’m he’s also one of those jenko Misfit I I think he’s closer to Misfit than fit he’s got the size he’s he’s theoretically got the shooting ability but for me he is a three that is too slow and not strong enough to get to a spot and then he’s a or he’s a four and we’re really not sure that he’s strong enough to defend his position and how does he score at that and fors end up being kind of pivotal defensive guys and I don’t see that with balis right now that’s a guy that if you’re drafting him and I’m going to say I need to preface this now this is probably going to be one of those classes that’s going to spend more time in the G League than any any other class before it bazis would be somebody that I would heavily like I would do similar to what they did with Mark Williams you were going to learn our system you were going to learn it in in Greensboro low stakes get your shots up and then by December by January hopefully you’re ready and then we can start unleashing you because I think there’s a lot missing with that kid and I don’t think that he’s ready and you have to draft him knowing that he’s not going to be ready yet all right there’s Misfit or miss or fit or Misfit mind like a steel trap there it is showing up once more um we can maybe get to some more prospects on the other side Doug I have to ask you though before I tease it do you have another mock draft for the people I do this one’s from bleacher poor waserman okay okay big one all right all right we got a waserman mock coming up next on the lockdown Hornets podcast don’t go to sleep on the Hornets just yet I don’t think I’ve done it yet I don’t Maybe I think there’s I was about to say I think there’s one waserman mock that you’ve done but maybe he’s this one’s updated trust me okay we will trust you yeah we we do the beautiful thing where we combine fit or Misfit and the mock draft Whoever waserman has the Hornet selecting n will tell us if it’s a fit or not that’s still to come another mock draft to the table one that we absolutely no question about it have not given you already it is updated and that is for sure you don’t need to fact check us on that Doug what’s the mock now this is from wasman on Bleacher Report from May 21st 20124 I’m just gonna I’m going to run these down count it down to number six and noty you tell me very one word answer fit Misfit number one Atlanta Hawks they’re going Reet they’re not going SAR what do you think fit Misfit fit size and size basically the size fits all right Alex SAR goes number two to the Wizards Misfit but because I don’t think he’s gonna end up being a center wow uh third overall Donovan kingan fit or Misfit absolute fit probably the best fit for the Hornets outside of Castle number four San Antonio Spurs select Nicola topic fit or Misfit Misfit because it sets off a whole political bomb that I don’t think you want to do a political bomb cool the rules are we move on after one sentence but that was what is the international crisis that we’ve got what’s it well tried explaining to lamelo ball while you drafted a point guard in the top six okay number five Detroit Pistons Stefan Castle who says he’s a point guard absolute fit deal with it anyway you deal with it anyway so you deal with it with Castle but you don’t deal with it with topic well castle castle you can at least convince hey he’s going to play off ball he doesn’t you’re woolly mammoth you are a woolly mammoth exactly you are a woolly mammoth you not a squirrel toich is toich is 66 198 and Stefan is 66 210 there there there’s a little bit of a difference and also we s we’ve already seen proof of concept with him playing off ball yeah okay um and number six overall we’ve already done this one uh Charlotte Hornet select Reed Shepard according to wasman Reed Shepard’s underwhelming measurements were expected his 42-in max vert were bigger Pleasant surprises that may have alleviated some concerns his offensive fit in Charlotte does seem strong the hornets compare Shepard with a 67 guard and playmaker in lamelo ball and a big scoring Wing in Brandon Miller Shepard ultimately seems well-liked by Executives particularly after interviews in Chicago the question is if teams in the top five see enough upside to consider him his player comp is Dante Devan chenzo who was a 30 threat in the playoffs uh these past I mean the Knicks are eliminated but he was yeah he was very good the last thing I will bring up on the Reed Shepard fit is you take a look at all the teams that are left outside of maybe Boston how many of them employ multiple guys under 63 if you’re talking about building a playoff Contender Championship Contender the idea needs to be your back Court’s probably got to be no shorter than 64 65 with a decent wingspan to it Reed Shepard doesn’t fit that that that algorith them honestly and and also what I would say to folks who are like yes but Brandon Miller has to be a two we want Brandon Miller to be a two that does suppose that the Hornets uh could fill out the three and the four with size as well that you know we don’t know if they are even going to pursue or be able to bring back miles Bridges which would leave two holes now in your roster if you wanted to make Brandon Miller a two so that just might not be in the cards for the next couple of Seasons which you could then invest in a reed Shepard or an undersized guard to to just explore that possibility to kick the tires on that kind of player while you figure out how you’re going to size up at all of these positions uh because the players aren’t there right now really quickly NADA uh number seven in this mock draft Portland Trailblazers select Dalton connect we haven’t talked about that connect fit or Miss natural fit natural fit shooter 67 yeah he fits automatically like that’s a guy that has positional fit is a dynamite scorer at minimum is good Joe Harris like I think that’s an absolute fit and anyone that wants to argue otherwise and says how was Dalton connect a fit but at the same time Reed Shepard not a fit one’s 67 the other is 6’3 yeah size is different here so and the the size is the big deal with how we’re trying to fit some of these guys onto the Hornets Rost and also when Doug you bring up well they could do something differently at three and four and bring some more size whatever yeah also like I I know Steve Clifford felt Brandon Miller was at his best when he was playing shooting guard but you hired a new GM and Jeff Peterson and maybe he has different uh looks on Brandon Miller and same thing with Charles Lee like I don’t know what Lee’s opinion is on what Brandon Miller’s best position is and we know at least we know that Brandon can play both so it you you have a little bit of flexibility there and we don’t know exactly what these guys view as the ceiling for Brandon and at what specific position so yeah we’ll see once these guys come aboard anything else Doug I’ve got a lot I’ve got a couple of sio satchel questions we can do let’s do it what you got all right this one um and I should have put the names of the people well I don’t have a name for this one because this one comes from the subtext I only have a phone number but uh they actually no this one was from Twitter and you know exactly who you are because I told you I was going to make this a SEO Satchel question so this is what are the chances that Charles Lee can snag D white away from the Boston Celtics and bring him over to Charlotte Hornets go ahead chances give me a percentage 75% that’s I love it I love it that’s a huge percentage here’s my only thing with that though I was just uh perusing the box score of their latest playoff Victory which was uh they they got by Indiana just barely and I was looking at their bench and uh they’re only they’re only playing three guys and and none of those guys are all stars um so you know I don’t feel like Boston can can lose a lot of talent right now well and also okay so he’s on the books at $19 million for 2024 2025 so he’s not a free agent if you’re to get Derek white you’re going to have to trade for him so I I don’t know how plausible that would be if he was a free AG but that’s what I’m saying like Boston I mean right now their benches what Peyton Pritchard Sam Hower and Luke cornette The Hornet killer I mean they got a bunch of CPAs coming off the bench they do but what I would also point out is that aren’t they a second they’re like a first to second apron team and remember they extended Drew holiday they’re not gonna have the money to bring him back I think it’s a better chance than people seem to think it is they as long as they keep their powder as long as the hornet keep the powder dry on the salary cap I think it’s a really good it’s a better chance of people want to admit at this point well and and the Drew holiday thing is interesting to me just because that’s who Charles Lee has worked with the most he that was a player that he worked with a lot in Milwaukee and then they just so happen to end up together in Boston too I I’m interested in you know that kind of conversation if Boston wanted to trade Drew holiday at this High clip because of Charles Lee’s relationship with Drew Hol is that the guard we should be talking about to pair alongside of Melo and then you do this okay he’s old but he really helps us right away I don’t know how much he helped the Celtics offensively this season but could there be a role at like a mini Kyle maybe like Kyle Lowry going to Miami type of Old Guard feel way I don’t know you know so maybe that be something that relationship I would wear the beit if Drew holiday came here wow we we talked about this remember there was like like some Drew holiday discussions this past off season when we knew Portland was willing to move off of him we talked about how much of a fit it would be this team needs grown-ups let’s add more grown-ups Drew holiday is the perfect type of grownup yes adrew holiday I love and I love Derek white he was one of my draft roses uh you can go back and check the tape from when we were doing mock drafts uh I love Derrik white I knew he was going to be star uh and so you know and listen and that took a while for those that are still critiquing me on scoot Henderson that it took a while for Derek white but you know flowers they blew him eventually he’s 29 years old it took until until but when he’s 30 you just wait you wait see I’m just saying sometimes it takes time Doug did you just coach Boon that situation from Remember The Titans I only got seven plays but they work like Nova can give it a little bit of time and he’ll kick in did you really just that next sio Satchel question what’s the worst player you’re willing to trade the number six pick for like okay for example this person asked if you got a woe bomb today about the Hornets trading the pick who is the last player you would be okay getting for that pick and I guess we’re assuming here you know just F fantasy type of thing you’re getting the player you trade the pick there’s some salary to but it doesn’t really matter it’s just player for pick giddy Josh giddy oh okay wow uh you were a lot more ready for that than I was Doug have you thought about this longer than I have and do you have an answer because of it like de jante Murray is that a good answer would that be the sort of the I mean that’s I would say your standards are High I mean a good player he’s an Allstar but but that’s you know it would mean you’re not trading it I think if you say deante Murray it would mean you’re not trading it what do you mean that the Hornets are not trading it no that you’re not if the if the worst player you would trade the six pick for basically straight up for the spirit of the game but with the filler whatever it’s an also I think look if you trade a top 10 pick I don’t care how bad this draft is if you trade a top 10 pick you better come away with an All-Star on a team that doesn’t have really any legitimate Allstar sorry lamelo ball you were an injury replacement barely okay you you still have to earn it and and your learner permit you still got to get that too apparently but like here’s what I’m saying here’s what I’m saying is that if you trade the number six overall pick you better get an Allstar or if if you don’t then you better come away with a future first rounder yeah no I hear you I that’s fair all that’s fair I just think that means you’re basically not going to trade it but that’s also fine give us the six pick I’m I’m totally cool with it all right that’ll do it for lock out Hornets thanks for making us your first Walker don’t be a coward say a player you’re trying to sneak out of here without doing that that’ll do it uh uh no I um male Bridges anything anything other than M Bridges and I’m not doing it you just you went to the highest that’s the highest level overall pick Doug it’s a top 10 selection there you go although I don’t even think male Bridges has an All-Star uh nod under his belt so actually you know what your standards are still higher than mine that’ll do it for real this time thanks for making us your first listen we’re free and available anywhere you get your pods that includes YouTube by the way while you’re going and listening to podcast listen to the ion 3. All the guards in this upcomign draft are misfits because we have too many guards already unless Hornets are willing to trade em up (NSJ & Bryce) for a decent bench player.

  4. I honestly think if we pass on Edy it would be a mistake their is nobody in this draft who is a better prospect in my mind..

College player of the year at the very least he would help us in the rebounding department and he is a good back up if mark Williams back keeps acting up.

Castle is trash he isn't worthy of a 1st rd pick much less the number 6 pick it would be mental draft him that high in my opinion

  5. The problem wasn’t terrys size, it’s just that he wasn’t a good defender. If you draft another guard, they’re guarding pgs

  6. Brandon Miller is our 2 of the future. Our best lineups had him at that position last year. With that in mind…

    1. Risacher
    2. Castle
    3. Matas
    4. Cody Williams
    5. Knecht
    6. Dillingham
    7. Shepard
    8. Holland

    I don't want MKG 2.0

  7. I’m really not high on UCONN players either. Many appear to be system players that become marginal or busts at the pro level IMO.

To me, Dalton Knecht makes the most sense due to his NBA ready offensive skills and size. Not the most athletic and defensively needs work but not for lack of effort, as he transferred to UT to improve his defensive performance under Rick Barnes. Having him will allow us to play B Miller at his natural position @ the 3 while developing DK @ the 2 guard which is his natural fit. We also maintain offense on the floor for those likely occasions when Melo is on the bench for stretches due to injuries or rest. Good rotational piece can handle the ball also.

  8. Edey carried his team to the finals on his back. No way Clingan is doing that if he swapped teams with Edey in the tournament

  9. I was going to say Stephon is 6'2 but that was the fake news lol. Castle I like a lot. Ron Holland is the same height as Cody Williams, 20 pounds heavier and averages 20 a game on a horrible team with a WIP jumper. Only other guy I'm promoting is Knecht, he has a role immediately wherever he goes.

  10. Final nba draft top rankings for Hornet desires

    1. Alexander Sarr- Unlimited Potential

    2. Zaccharie Risacher- Unlimited Potential

    3. Ron Holland- Aggressive w/ Ball & switch defender

    4. Donovan Clingan- Classic center that can shoot potential

    5. Tidjane Salaun- Unlimited Potential

    6. Reed Sheppard- great 6th man option

    7. Matas Buzelis- long wing off ball 3-d threat

    8. Stephon Castle- versatile pg backup with high defensive potential

    9. Zach Edey- hidden gem I think he can shoot was just never asked but walks in with nba size and strength

    10. Cody Williams- hidden gem similar to Buzelis just a bit smaller in height but a bit quicker so they kinda balance

    11. Bronny James- brings Lebron James to the hornets

  11. Currently, the players I would be most excited to put on this team:

    1. Risacher
    2. Sarr (strictly on potential and size)
    3. Salaun
    4. Castle
    5. Williams
    6. Buzelis
    7. Holland
    8. Shepard
    9. Clingan
    10. Knecht

  12. If Buzelis was about 210 -220 LBS at least I'd take him, he doesn't have the strength. I like Reed Sheppard even if he was to be a great 6th man. Sheppard's 3 point shooting, vertical and defense is too good to pass on. If Reed can be a Jamal Murray that would be awesome. I do also like Dalton Knecht although I think he'd be drafted with the Spurs with the 8th pick, I wouldn't be mad though with selecting Knecht, because Knecht I do feel is ready.

  13. As one of the sickos that was Brandon Miller in 2023 from the very beginning, here is what we want. (Sarr not included because he seems to be the only person with a 0% chance of being there at 6)

    “YES!!” Tier

    – Reed Sheppard
    – Steph Castle
    – Zaccharie Rischacher
    – Cody Williams

    “I guess” Tier

    – Matas Buzelis
    – Donovan Clingan
    – Dalton Knect
    – Nikola Tooic

    “NO!!!” Tier

    – Ron Holland
    – Rob Dillingham

  14. Honestly, I prefer Ron Holland because he has the size and more polish game. Therefore, I'm with Walker Mehl in terms of the fit.

  15. No guard nick richards already been on the rumor mill we need a center we seen that all year we got plenty of people to shoot them 3s but we have no one to rebound or guard the paint

  16. Reed Shepard is a fit. His shooting is a plus but he really thrives on defensive plays due to his size. We need to start thinking in the mindset of the coaching staff we have coming in. Charles lee, Skeeter would turn Reed into a Payton Prichard 2.0 with better all around defense and vertical. If he falls to 6 we’re getting a great 6th man or plug n play starter for 5 years

  17. No way I trade for Giddey in any circumstances. Folks are complaining already about the offense not spreading out and weird off court issues. Keep him 500 miles away from CMS.

  18. Why you being stupidly disrespectful to lamelo when the player your trading in Murray was also a injury replacement allstar

  19. Whoa Branson for the first time deeply getting personal about LaMelo Ball. Yet he absolutely Loves the guy who helped bury a girl. Simply bec Miller is perceived as more serious about helping his team win. Never allow your Fandom to calibrate your moral compass, people 💯💯💯

  20. Why do people want Miller to play the 2? Did everyone just not watch him get blown by when he guarded anyone under 6'4 last year?
