The Best Moves That Work in a REAL Game

The Best Moves That Work in a REAL Game

I get asked all the time why the moves players work on in workouts don’t translate to real game and most times it’s for three reasons number one they’re working on them in the wrong way without defense or decisions physicality and the context and spacing of the game anybody can pick up a move without defense or on a cone and yes that is a good first step but you have to get repetition doing this with defense as well for this to translate it doesn’t just magically happen two they may not be the best moves to be working on and expecting to translate to a game on on a daily basis now I’m actually the typee of coach who wants players to work on crazy stuff here and there if I walk into my gym and I see a Player working on this I’ll actually encourage it why well because even if they never use it it’s likely a good challenge for their General skill their confidence their coordination and plus you never know what the game will present down the line they may be able to use it but you got to know the difference between working on things for it to build general skill and maybe for it to happen here and there and then the ones that you’ll use most often in a game to take a finishing example I actually have players do 360 layups here and there and do I expect them to do this in a real game hell no but it’s building the general quality so that more simple layups that require similar body control are then easy same thing with moves don’t expect the crazy stuff to happen much get really good at the ones that happen a lot but still don’t limit yourself number three and I see this a lot is that players use these in the wrong situations they’re consistently trying to go ISO against set Defenders and I’ll tell you right now that unless you’re one of the best players in the world that ain’t going to work too well or it may work here and there just not the most efficient because the best players know how to find the situations in game that make these moves work easier something I talk about in all of these videos anyways I want to give you guys a few moves or concepts that will and can be used often and hopefully you guys will enjoy train them and apply them let’s get to it so first are a few different setups I like to think of these as setups and not necessarily moves CU you can go anywhere from them it’s not a robotic mindset of doing a specific move but rather using one of these to put you in a good position to then make your next decision or your next move so the rule of thumb here is to keep it as simple as possible actually that’s a pretty good rule of thumb for anything on the court if you don’t need to do much just explode off of the setup think about a black belt they don’t go around using their craziest stuff they may never have to use it in their life and if they don’t cool but if the time comes they can same thing with your handles so here are in my opinion some of the best setups first is a hang dribble easily the most common where you’re just letting that ball float in the hand as you often skip or lift up a bit this gives you a window of time with the ball in your hand to read this Defender and be able to explode from a nice position all while changing speeds and Ling them to sleep now it’s important to realize here that there are plenty of different ways to do this you can go a little bit more narrow or you can get more Lateral with it faster or slower splitting the feet we’re keeping them on the same side lifting up or staying lower the point being there are so many different ways to do this and really this goes for all of these moves that I’d rather have you guys get comfortable with more options than just doing it One Singular way and try to put your own flavor on it too next is a quick Retreat so moving backwards which often slightly brings out the defense and cause them to direct their momentum forwards even if just a little bit which automatically gives you the momentum Advantage again there are obviously plenty of ways to do this but backing up to create some space and pull them towards you was a great [Applause] setup you didn’t see the last game next we have a shuffle which is kind of like a hang but you’re really shuffling at the defender to put pressure on them and then a run out where you’re now sprinting at the defender with a head of steam and then figuring it out from there then we got to look off with rotation where you’re turning away from the basket a bit kind of facing uphill and then making a decision from there especially in ball screen situations but really anytime this is a great way to lull Defenders to sleep get them moving a bit and also have a nice comfortable position to explode [Applause] [Music] from nice Cross by with the left then lastly and this sounds crazy it’s just a hard attack not thinking but just trying to go by a Defender I think most players would be surprised that how much they can actually get an advantage on Defenders or at least set them up for an instinctual counter move if you drive to score don’t overthink your moves and just try to get by them as simply as possible and on these I’d much rather you guys think less about what moves to use and more about where you want to get to because you don’t need the perfect move to do that if you simply developed the tools to get there it becomes instinctual over time so think about hey I want to get to here I’m going to try to get there and whatever Defender does then I’ll make moves based on that the best way to work on this is just playing One V one out of these setups and rather than predetermining just think about keeping it as simple as possible soon enough it’ll become far more instinctual for you you get more creative off of these and these will become go-to next is a creative dribble timing explosion which is essentially just mixing up the timing with which you explode like here Maxi takes a slow dribble and then right after the ball hits he explodes or Brunson going a bit off timing hereon you see the most creative ball handlers use this at ton and a variety of ways with mostly very simple moves especially a delayed between the legs this is easily one of the most common moves you’ll see in hoops and for good reason it’s unpredictable it’s easy to protect the ball and it puts you in a nice position to explode from too but if you can get good with this General timing idea that’s a big plus next our creative close out attacks which again isn’t a specific move but hopefully you can draw some inspiration from these in short if you can get really good attack in these situations it’ll make the game pretty easy and sometimes it doesn’t need to be anything wild just a nice well-timed explosion off the catch but against good Defenders you’ll sometimes have to get creative maybe using an inside hand toss out to create an angle on a trailing Defender a little Shifty cross off the catch like McCain maybe stampeding the ball or meeting it with momentum maybe even setting up a spin off of the initial attack like Kobe here on both of these whatever it is the point is that these moves are not only worth working on but not easy to get down most times and if you can get the coordination footwork timing and feel for these you have close out situations plenty of times per game and can capitalize with these a lot more than just ISO moves next are creative speed changes that often work in a straight line if you can even just get the slightest advantage on your Defender things like this heavy step are amazing to throw them off get them stuck or moving back this way a bit and then you re Accelerate from there to build your advantage even more these don’t have to be exaggerated and as you see here are often really slight changes in speed but having these ready for when your Defender is in pretty good position is a great tool to have in that toolbox big jump shot fakes are next which are pretty self-explanatory but whether this is off the catch dribble threat or off the dribble it’s one of the most underused Tools in most young players games but is a very simple and versatile way to create [Applause] advantages the mag back Fleet car then we got a shimmy off the triple threat which is another one you’ll see a lot whether it’s an all-time great or even just with good youth players this is one that efficient players across all levels have developed just be careful some places we’ll call this a travel and lastly are separations to space which is basically the AB ility to find and then navigate to space with different types of pushups you can do this in a number of ways but all it really is is being able to perceive where this open space is and then get there as efficiently as possible down great moves to be ready to apply and then the last thing I want to mention is this everyone’s going to have different things that work so experiment experiment experiment and see what works for you for example I’ve worked on In-N-Out moves my whole life and I just can’t get good at them it’s just not my thing I’m not built for it I guess but I’m not going to force it just because people on my Instagram Explorer page said I needed it in my bag I’m going to go find stuff that works for my movement and my play style and I want you guys to do the same thing take what works experiment and over time sharpen your toolbox for the tools that work best for you as always thank you guys so much for tuning in hopefully you took something from this video more importantly go apply it and let me know what you think [Applause] let

It sounds crazy, but we think about moves a bit too much. I get asked all the time what moves are best for a specific situation, what the most “killer moves are,” and how to learn them all… but in reality, there’s a better way to be thinking about this and working on it!

  1. Video notes-
Dont think of what move to use, think about where you want to get to with these tools Hang Dribble, Retreat, Shuffle, Run-at, Look-off (with rotation) , just go, Creative- dribble timing, close out attacks, speed changes (that often happen in a straight line)::: Shot fakes, shimmy (off the triple threat), separation to space (the ability to find and to navigate to space with different type of pushouts)

Conclusion- Everyone has different things that work for them so experiment!
