I Don’t Want to See the Chicago Bulls Tank; Here’s Why

when it comes to the sentiment across Bulls fans when going into this offseason there are fans in two camps for how the Bulls should approach this summer one side believes the Bulls should still look for ways to go about improving the roster remaining competitive which I yes I realize is a trigger word amongst boths Nation but to look to get better address the holes and weaknesses on the roster while also still looking ahead at the future then of course there is the other contingent of fans who have had enough with this team they want changes Swift changes they want this whole thing to be torn down start over and rebuild and actually have some semblance of a direction and really just based on what I see on Twitter and Reddit it’s starting to become apparent that most fans actually want to go the rebuilding route and I’ve had some people ask me where do I stand on this and I have to say it might surprise some people if you’re new to the channel but I am not in the tear it all down and start tanking Camp if you’ve been following the channel for a while you know that I have never been a fan of tanking I think in some rare instances it makes sense but those circumstances are few and far between and for the Bulls going into the offseason and Beyond I actually think it would be a mistake to blow it up tank for picks and build the team that way and it’s for a host of reasons which I’ll explain in this video so what’s going on everyone you’re listening to Bull Central here hope you’re all doing well first off apologies that I’ve been a little bit light on the content recently I have been a little more focused on the NBA channel and one hoops and there also just hasn’t really been much to cover on the Bulls while we’re in the midst of the playoffs and we’re kind of just waiting for the draft trades to start picking up and free agency so I do apologize for that but if you’re looking for more content for myself I outside of just Bulls talk you can follow along on the second Channel which is linked in the description now some of you already know this but part of the reason why my stance on tanking has always been a bad strategy in the NBA is because while some might say well rebuilding tanking whatever you want to call it it’s a strategy that at least shows some sort of Direction which is something the Bulls are devoid of right now where they’re kind of in no man’s land stuck in mediocrity like I saw recently from an NBA analyst and reporter talking about the Bulls how the Bulls are actually better off going the tanking route because it at least signals a Direction and a smarter Direction my argument against that is well yes it is a pivot in where the Bulls are currently at it finally means the front office acknowledges change is needed and yes in theory it is a direction for the future of the franchise but in my view it’s kind of a lazy direction to take and what I mean by that is for teams that are stuck in the middle or say even teams that are slightly above that but they’re not legitimate contenders instead of figuring out how to actually make their roster work how to actually get better retool make adjustments and fix your weaknesses on the roster instead of doing that the philosophy is well this isn’t working we’re not quite sure what else to do I guess we’ll just tear it all down and hope we can get lucky in the lottery and hit on a future franchise player the strategy behind taking is almost like going to casino and putting some money on 19 and roulette and hoping that you hit rather than using critical thinking and strategies to actually make better use of investing your money tanking is never a guarantee that you’re going to lead a generational Talent or future star player it’s never a guarantee that it’s going to position you to compete for a title in the near future like I know so many people are going to disagree with this because it’s become such a fundamental approach in building a roster in the NBA but tanking is a poor man’s approach for trying to build a championship roster GMS who would rather take their luck in chances at hitting on a pick or two instead of actually being aggressive smart and strategic and taking calculat risk to try and achieve the ultimate goal in the NBA which is winning a championship now as far as the reason specifically for why the Bulls and why I think tanking would be a mistake aside from just my general philosophy on tanking as I just shared I’m going to start with a little bit of history and revisiting the Bulls past and not so distant past either but of course as most of you know when the Bulls initially triggered a rebuild in the summer of 2017 when they traded away Jimmy Butler for Chris Dunn Zack LaVine and the number seven pick which ended up becoming Lowry marinin and then would go on to buy out Dwayne Wade and let Raj Rondo go the direction was there that hey this isn’t working we tried to see if we could make this work without Rose and Noah and Butler as our league guy and it’s not going to happen so the Bulls decided we’re going to lose for a while get a bunch of young guys and build that way and while the Bulls were bad for the next few seasons and hope to land a top pick for a chance at guys like Luca or Zion or jaw every year the Bulls got unlucky in the lottery and ended up with the seventh pick every year missing on franchise level players I’ve said this so many times but losing as many games as you possibly can is never a guarantee of getting the number one pick or even a top four pick for that matter just ask the Pistons who have been historically baded for two straight Seasons with the worst record in the NBA and they ended up with the fifth pick in the draft two straight years and so I bring up the Bulls pass asked when they attempted to tank and I asked did it work did it really make them better now you could argue well if the front office was a little more patient with that group maybe they could have turned into something special no I don’t see it they would have been decent but not a championship level team the other reason tanking doesn’t make sense for this Bulls team and I’ll use history as another example but do you remember when the Bulls started off the season in 1718 and mitic was injured for the first few weeks because pora socked him in the face the bull started off the season 3 and 20 and then mitic came back and they won seven straight games the Bulls would end up going on to win too many games to really give them the best odds to land a top pick that pointless seven game winning streak in that stretch in 2017 likely cost the Bulls a shot at drafting Luca donic and the reason I bring that up as it relates to the current Bulls team is if they blow it up and start tanking you’re assuming it means going on a fire sale for their big three and older guys and dear Vu and LaVine as well as trading Alex Caruso and going with their young guys Kobe iio Patrick dalan Terry Phillips whoever they draft at number 11 right maybe whatever potential young players they can get in trading off of their veterans those guys are still good enough that they’re going to win you a fair amount of games they’re not going to take you to the playoffs they’ll win less games overall than they did this past season but it’s not like these young guys are just going to fold and intentionally start playing poorly because the front office and ownership wants them to lose like these guys are still competitors at the end of the day and they’re young players that are trying to make a name for themselves and get paid players are never going to intentionally throw games and if you roll with that young Bulls roster you might see a Nicola mitic scenario where one of them goes off for a stretch and the Bulls go on a winning streak to all but destroy your lottery odds and then you end up with the eighth or ninth pick and then to further that point and another reason why tanking doesn’t make sense for the Bulls and something I’ve been critical about well on the surface losing for a number of Seasons taking a step back to take a step forward in the future sounds good in principle when you do it so many times and you continue to fail at getting out of it all you do is further perpetuate a culture of losing in your organization instilling a loser mentality for the players and the fans that actually become more damaging over time because think about it this way do you think players and teams around the league view the Bulls as a winning organization yeah they had their Dynasty days in the 90s but outside of that they’ve gone through multiple rebuilds to try and get back to that Mark but to no avail do you think players want to come to Chicago when they’ve built this culture where losing is okay and that we’re losing and hoping on a prayer that we get better rolling the DI and hoping the ping pong balls fall our way for a few seasons in a row no players want to go to winning organizations not franchises with a history of losing and incompetence and given the Bulls just went through a rebuild one that didn’t work the new regime came in and aborted that plan and accelerated their timeline to win now to then go right back to that just 3 years later is a horrible look and again would only further perpetuate this losing mentality and then finally another reason I don’t think it makes sense for the Bulls to tank while I am fully aware the Bulls pick in next year’s draft is top 10 prot protected otherwise it goes to the Spurs one of the biggest things we’ve noticed about this front office is they have yet to show us that they’re great at finding Talent yeah they got IO in the second round which was a gem to find that late in the draft and Julian Phillips has shown some promise but when it comes to their first round picks Patrick Williams fourth overall dalen Terry 18th I just as much as a top pick in the 2025 draft sounds sexy unless it’s a top three pick I don’t really trust this front office to get it right and that doesn’t just apply to the 2025 draft but beyond because obvious OB L the idea behind tanking is you’re going to do it for a few seasons the front office hasn’t given me much confidence that they’ll be able to hit on a top pick and while I know everyone is saying tank for Cooper flag yeah getting flag would be incredible but with the flattening Lottery odds the best chance the Bulls can have at Landing the number one pick is 14% which are the same odds for the four worst teams in the NBA so again Living on a Prayer and going through a season of losing just to have a 14% chance at getting the number one pick at best because like I said before the young Bulls will probably find their way into winning more games than the front office would like to see so those chances are likely going to be lower so no I don’t want to see this team tank I don’t want to see them take the lazy route of just hoping to get lucky in the lottery be okay with losing for multiple Seasons when the draft lottery is out of their control and I don’t want to see this negatively impact our young players who will slowly get tired of losing night after night and look to go elsewhere so you’re probably asking now well if that’s the case then what should the Bulls do because there aren’t really many avenues for them to to really get better well work with what you have retool changes still need to be made look to trade Zack LaVine see what you can get a value for a guy like Alex crw so bring in solid rotational players and mentors to help their younger Player Development get some actual shooting as well for once see if you can somehow make strides in the right direction where you actually start attracting some quality free agents and you try and build from there is that a recipe for building a championship team I don’t know but it certainly beats just trying to get lucky in the lottery year after year so let me know what you guys think let me know in the comments as always be sure to subscribe and I’ll see you in the next one

  1. Tank! Tank! Tank! Anyone that wants to stay in purgatory also is suicidal.

Plus we keep our pick this year if we tank. If we get better the spurs get the pick then when we lose in the playoffs first round the same ppl saying not to tank will be crying about not having the pick. Can't have it both ways

  2. Look, I get not wanting to fully tank, and everyone always says we can “retool” without any actual plan of how to accomplish that. What options do the Bulls have, trading Zach, but still not going to have tons of cap space to sign big FA. We really wanna build a team around Derozan and Vuc? How can this team even get up to top 6th in the East. Sorry, but a youth movement is absolutely needed, and running it back without Zach is a bad strategy

  3. How you gonna retool this roster? Lavine has low value. The owner won't spend like it's required to actually compete.

This FO has been trying to win and it hasn't worked their entire time here. Given all the other factors listed above. Why is it a smart idea to keep doing the samething expecting different results? That's the literal definition of insanity.

  4. Rebuild by trading veteran players for young players and draft picks. But we know the owner won't do that. He'll just keep milking this cow until it's dry and it's to late

  5. Remember when the bulls 'tried' in 2023-2024, beat Atlanta in the play-in game and watched Atlanta who was slotted one pick ahead of them, win the draft lottery?

    Pepperidge farm remembers

I don't care if it's a bad draft class. The bulls are the reason they don't take well and the bulls are the reason they don't compete for titles

  6. Can't agree more, plus develop players, find players that are a better fit, change the culture and find a mega star, or develop one and then the foundation is in place to compete for championships – if it was easy Chicago, Lakers, Rockets, and New York, for examples, would still be competing, however it's not as difficult as Chicago is making it

  7. We are a major-market team who are the 6th most valuable franchise in the NBA. When people say "tanking works" and uses some team as an example, they completely ignore than dozen + bottom feeding teams who are also tanking in perpetuity. Bringing up the exceptions does not change that most tanking teams just ends up being +1 in the win columns for teams that are actually trying.

If they team tried that tanking ish again, I would tune out, because I saw the post-Jimmy years and it didn't bear fruit due to office decisions on one hand and just bad luck on the other e.g. 7th pick 3 times. I do not believe these pro-tank people actually want to watch intentionally bad ball for 4-5 years unless we luck into super picks. Even OKC did not bottom out with a plan. They got Shai and tried to win…they just sucked until they didn't. Bulls need to actually live with their decisions and learn to change the culture. There are a bunch of guys on this squad that are a trade away from fans bitching and whining when they look better on someone else's squad.

  8. Need to keep next years pick. I support the youth movement. I hate rebuilds by the way. Vooch and DeMar should go to win now teams. Lavine too

  9. Bulls aren't doing anything until the Reisndorfs are no longer the owners. Next draft with Flagg, Boozer and others are worth tanking for

  10. I would like to see a major change and by that I mean treading veterans : Voch, Demar and Zach, because if they are back then not much will change.

  11. Good take. Highlights the 2 big problems in the nba. The selection of all stars/all nba. The nba teams being lazy to develop players they need in their teams.
How do we get Bol Bol?

  12. 100% tank right now. This coming from a knicks fan. The 2026 and 27 nba drafts are going go be better. 2026 free agency is lit as well. Trade for picks and salary. Plus young talent. Eye a 2028-30 championshio window. Look at what okc was able to accomplish. Now they are sitting pretty

  13. 100%. Tanking is cheap way out that isn't guaranteed. We have great players that would thrive with a couple small, but key moves. I hate gambling. Also, I am a believer in putting in the work and earning what is coming to you from going hard and all out.
