Can the Indiana Pacers avoid a sweep? Keys to Game 4 vs Boston Celtics and tweaks to make

Pacers Celtics game for tonight what can the Pacers do better can they avoid the sweep get the gentleman’s in there at worst and what other adjustments do they need to make going into game four to get a win to start their hope of somehow not getting out in the Conference Finals we’ll talk about it today on the lockon Pacers podcast you are locked on Pacers your daily Indiana Pacers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team everyday what up y’all happy Monday hope you had or are having if you’re having a long weekend a great weekend and welcome into another edition of the lockon Pacers podcast where we of course talk about the Indiana Pacers as always my name is Tony East I cover the team for Forbes and Si and today game four will happen in gamri Fieldhouse as big as it gets for the Pacers but less than last time where the series was on the line more so than this time teams have come back from 3-1 no one has ever come back from 3 0 yet that is where the Pacers are what can they do better in game four to avoid getting swept to start what would be a historic comeback if it were to actually happen although very few expect it what can they do better from an adjustments perspective should they change the starting five if they don’t have tyes hurn again all sorts of stuff to get to to break down game three and beyond for the Pacers uh so let’s start with this look someone pointed this out correctly in the comments of the last YouTube video like the the three 0 versus 3-1 thing like the Pacers came back from 21 last round and uh we’re down two and then won four or five like teams can win three or four in the NBA teams can win four or five winning four in a row against anyone’s really hard I said that yesterday talking about the inverse of the reality the Pacers are in where the Pacers have 47 WIS this season and the Celtics had 64 right that’s a 17- win Gap imagine the Pacers having to be the 30- win team four times in a row you’d have confidence they’d win most of them but all of them know and the other reason to bring that up is the Pacers play every team in the league a certain number of times this season they beat Atlanta four times they beat Detroit four times that’s it uh oh the Bucks they beat the Bucks a lot too they had the extra inseason Tournament game I forgot about that it’s hard it’s very rare to beat a team four times um and two of the teams that they beat four times are actually good so it is possible but it’s very rare and very challenging considering the quality of opponent the Wizards beat the all the crappy teams beat the Pacers if you’ve been following them all year you know that outside of Detroit every crappy team beat the Pacers once like it’s very hard but the Pacers will try they will look for whatever motivations they can Pride uh in front of their own fan base at home get it back to Boston don’t get swept all that is at stake still and Rick Carly laid it out at practice Sunday you know the NBA prepping a trophy ceremony in game brid as they have to for game four if the Celtics win they will get the Eastern Conference Finals Trophy and go to the finals and the Pacers do not want to let that happen on their home floor there’s a lot they can do internally to try to win this game no one wants to get swept at any round of any point in the postseason including the Pacers so that’s step one step two three and four to winning four times in a row is playing really well against the Celtics and that has proven to be really hard so let’s talk about some of the stuff they can actually do better in this game because simply wanting it more isn’t a thing that will be so sufficient for four games although it will matter certainly uh to the extent that the Pacers can make it a thing in game four to me at home one Team Up 3 there is a lot of motivational differences at that point in the series um and officially I should add Chris De porzingis that was reporting earlier in the series excuse me that he would return for game four uh he is listed as out as of the last injury report that came out before I recorded this and tyres halberton is listed as questionable with that hamstring soreness R Carlile did not provide an update on him on Sunday uh so perhaps similarl looking teams to Saturday night um perhaps halberton back maybe porzingis gets upgraded later in the day although we’ve seen how those kind of finding situations go Dame went from doubtful to questionable or whatever before like it’s not unheard of but that is the current reality of the situation the Pacers are facing too is with injuries and that’s where I want to start literally is what the Pacers did from a starting five perspective if you listened to me I said I predicted they’d start McConnell but like kind of towed the line and said I don’t know what they’ll do because Carlile has an affinity for keeping his bench unit together which makes sense and they didn’t end up starting McConnell they started Ben Shepard with Halburn out for game three and then can sub out Shephard earlier and then still get to your bench unit and like the difference between bench Shepard’s still a part of the bench group right like you’re still loot changing it in some way the difference is McConnell like is the bench right he is the identity Setter he is the reason it all kind of clicks and works if you take him out it doesn’t work as but if you take Shephard out they can still try to play that identity maybe it’s just worse or different with less chemistry so I get that and Shephard you need some form of Defense although if you’ve heard me on series I’ve said I just don’t think the Pacers could sto the Celtics so every adjustment I would try to make is trying to keep up and I would be looking at offense in every single turn uh and Shepard didn’t make enough shots so that that hurt but you know how they decide what to do in this next game if Alberton doesn’t play it’ll be fascinating to me do they roll with Shepard again let’s just big picture look at the lineup data from game three the Turner seaka N hard Smith shepher group aka the starters played 16 minutes in game three uh they lost those minutes by 10 points they were really bad on defense actually they were really good scoring 37 points on 30 possessions they’ll take that every day that’s insanely good offense right that Nets out to an offensive rating of 123.3mi Derek white Aaron n Smith was on Tatum shakum was on Brown and Andrew Mard was on Drew holiday um first of all if you’ve been listening throughout the series I still think cakam should start Games on Tatum though I get the resistance um but I think if they do start this way again I would do seak Tatum uh Shephard Brown uh n Smith on Derek white or Drew and nard on the other one uh myself but I get that the Pacers need the size to keep up and I get starting Shepard from that perspect perspective a lot of other people did predict Shepard would be the fifth starter kudos to them um that group didn’t do well and it was largely defensive and and they have like again if the group’s offense is good maybe you stick with it and my thesis of you need to score to keep up you roll with it again but they did lose those minutes by 10 perhaps they would re-evaluate who should start instead now if you want to look at the lineup I suggested uh McConnell n Smith narakam Turner also was a negative right so I don’t get any kudos for that that group uh only played played 7 minutes and 18 seconds together they scored very well 18 points on 12 possessions that’s an even better offensive rating um than the first group we talked about which means they also sucked on the defensive end right they had a 150 offensive rating that’s insane and that group does feature four of four the four guys who all were phenomenal in game three right they shot 62.5% on twos made two out of the three threes that’s great maybe unst understandably great but that’s great the whoever starts has to defend better the the two logical choices between McConnell and Shepard didn’t work but they scored well so on one hand if you want to talk about what the Pacers should do if Halbert doesn’t start again the place to start is does it does it Ma like can they get any defense out of these two groups does it matter right because if you’re not going to be able to guard either way then you would theoretically want to lead into the group that can score as much as possible for 48 minutes right if it makes your starters great but your bench terrible is it actually worth it um so I still think there would be to see to the only reason I say this is because if both groups played great on offense and terrible on defense the group that was slightly better on offense would be where I would lean so maybe they do just stop to start McConnell in game four because that group scored better A lot of the Pacers top played lineups in game four were negative in fact the most the all six lineups the Pacers played more than two minutes in game four were negative which is crazy to me every little pocket lineup they had where they were mixing and matching was positive and that’s how they were able to you know only lose by three and be winning late but other their big minute groups were negative and couldn’t guard right and that’s kind of been the story of the series to me is and the the Pacers defense just hasn’t been good and they can’t keep up offensively with the Celtics offensive level so I would opt as I’ve said all series for the starting five that can score as effectively as possible and if halberton plays it’s just whatever their normal starting five is if he doesn’t I might try McConnell I really might he was Sensational they tried that group they had that group in late for good reason I would try it as the Pacers it’s do or die you got to try something Ben Shepard did not do anything wrong I mean he didn’t make shots I suppose you could say that that’s doing something wrong but they’re on their last life and if Alberton can’t go that is something I would consider other lineup stuff to talk about more adjustments as we hit game four of Pacers Celtics to talk about as we continue here on lock on Pacers before we do any of that though let me talk to you guys about eBay Motors Pass and drive and patience the formula for winning championships Talia Goodman and I teamed up to talk some Fe lots of stuff we talk Caitlyn Clark start to the season the team’s expectations how they’re doing compared to those so far stock up and down for certain players the works so if you’re thinking about diving into the fever this year for the first time or are planning on diving in when the Pacers are done that could be a good way you to launch your way in uh let’s keep going on the Pacers who are still alive in the Conference Finals although down3 0 look we could talk motivations like I did at the beginning no one’s done it before maybe that’s your motivator you want to be the first team to do it you think you can do it because you beat the Celtics three times in the regular season you think you can do it because you’ve been up late twice in this series two games that according to those like models that predict teams win probability had them over 90% right they probably feel good about that kind of stuff and yet they’re down 20 or excuse me three 0 um but they have to win four in a row to move on no one’s done it before but rightly someone at practice asked Ric Carla about this today the closest team to do it at least that I can remember I’m sure a team has gotten it to seven before last year Celtics against the Heat they were down 3 0 they won the next three they lost game seven on their home floor but they they did it and so the fact that it’s been that recent I mean no one will ever give up in this it’s the conference freaking finals so I’m looking forward to seeing how the Pacers respond in this situation we’ve seen them all season their superpower is adjusting responding to whatever situation they’re in this is the biggest by far situation they’ve been in can they still do that can their superpower still be their superpower or is this just talking about you know intangible stuff that doesn’t mean anything and talent will just win out perhaps that is the case as has been the case in almost every playoff series for all of time let’s continue with some other adjustment stuff that I have written down from game three I finally deleted my game one and two adjustments because a lot of them have either been made or no longer relevant in the series you know what else I had to delete today from my notes page the hav’t lost at home since March 18 line that the that I’ve been using for the Pacers and that everybody’s been using that is now over Celtics uh ended it they have not lost on the road in the postseason yet so we’ll see what ends up happening tonight okay thing one that I’m looking at for the Pacers in this game is what I something I already talked about Shepard on D white to start the game NE Smith on Tatum seak on Brown nard on Drew mix those up I think siakam’s gotta be on Tatum I know that I understand why they’re not doing it but and they’ve actually defended Tatum pretty well throughout the series but Shephard’s size and his ability to defend Wings means I would put him on one of brown and Tatum and that would naturally mean I I’m putting him on Brown and I’m putting seak on Tatum and then I’m putting n Smith on either Drew or Derek white and I’m putting nard on the other one I think nart on Drew made a lot of sense so perhaps I think n Smith should be on Dereck white but if halberton starts the matchups are obvious with um sakam mon Tatum still uh otherwise I think they got to mix those up but it’s just so hard so hard to stop the Celtics so I get that that might be grasping its straws for some sort of change so think the Pacers did very well very well in game uh three and this is something R Carlile talked about today is not this specific thing but they got in the paint really well in that game right they didn’t shoot well and yet they were in it late because they I believe 68 I’m double- checking while I’m talking points in the paint something Rick said is they yeah they looked through stuff that they did wrong that they would like to correct in game four right naturally that’s what film sessions are all about but they also look that stuff they did well that they want to do again they got to the paint whenever they wanted right whether that was McConnell or nard or The Bigs 68 68 points in the paint for the Pacers um in that game I’m checking right now if that is their top number in the postseason but that’s Sensational and that is a require especially if they don’t have hurn to generate the threes that is a requirement for them uh to to be in these games and I think the Celtics will try to adjust in some way to you know be better at you know defending around the basket and making that not a reality but that was something the Pacers did extremely well in that game that they have to continue to do and Rick said they talked about the stuff they did well well that was the thing 68 is their most points in the paint in the postseason when they reach 60 they are now three and three actually uh in the playoffs with their two losses previously being games one and two to the Knicks uh and then this loss was now their third one they beat the Knicks twice with over 60 points in the paint and beat the Bucks in game six with 60 exactly points in the paint so they’ve got to get in there especially if they can’t generate as many threes they will definitely shoot better in the next game than they did in this one it’s just how NBA players work but that has to be a focus again is getting in the paint using that to their advantage in the way they did okay we saw the big group a little more in this game I’m going to keep harping on this is something that I think they just need to keep exploring and that is top in and chakum and a center they went to it a few more times in game four with success in fact they went to it jumbo huge groups uh to mix things up they s we saw Turner nard Shephard top oh whoops I’m on the wrong line we saw topen yakum Turner nard Shepard that group uh did well for its short little stint we saw uh I can’t find the other one now this is so bad uh another one with Turner there it is Turner seak N Smith and Connell and top uh and I missed a player and N Smith that was huge that group was plus four in its minute and a half uh I they just to me oh then then Turner sakam top and Shepard McConnell was also successful for two and a half minutes I continue to think that that size is very valuable in the series because the Celtics have skilled size everywhere and car’s talking about this forever not in relation to this series but just to him the evolution of the game and this is obviously true to like in general but you know coaches are always ahead of the curb like the the last kind of era before where we are right now in the NBA was about skill right and now it’s about skilled size so like if two players have the exact same ability but one is six inches taller this the taller player better right so skilled size is the name of the game and that’s why a lot of the best players are 68 plus and very skilled and the Celtics have a bunch of those so the Pacers best way to combat that to me is having size of their own and trying to have their own advantages come from that not make the Celtic size an advantage for them instead turn it into at best the neutral and so I’ve been advocating for seak toppen and a center groups and they went to that a little bit more not a lot more but a little bit more in game four I feel bad using this adjustment every single game because it’s not that riveting but they it’s in my notes for game three something they did and I think that they need to continue to kind of go to that because that was really important to what they did something else they did very well in game four that I think will be an absolute must uh in their next game and is very relevant to something we’ve been talking about all series is the Celtics continue for some for various reasons I I I think they should switch this up honestly if I’m John carral is talking about adjustments this is one I make they keep putting Al Horford on seaka the cross matching has been a theme all postseason for the Pacers in the front court and they’ve always found a way or at least typically found a way to get an advantage out of it in game three cakam when guarded by Horford was five for seven right he’s been since ational picking at that matchup finding ways to make it an advantage for him and score and he’s really picked on everybody in this series he’s been unbelievable but that match up in particularly he well he was also guarded by Derek white a lot uh in game three but either way that matchup has been successful for the Pacers and maybe the the Celtics finally switch it up but the thing we talked about on this show after game two is if they’re gonna go to that if Celtics are going to make that their defensive look they’re big on seaka that means Miles Turner is being guarded by a smaller player right maybe it’s Tatum maybe it’s guard maybe it’s brown whatever maybe it’s a bench player because there Subs who knows it’s not Al Horford and the bench bigs for the Celtics haven’t done much in this series so after game two and Turner wasn’t as good I said they’ve got to get him more involved specifically inside the arc punishing those mismatches he’s gotten way better at that throughout his career right whether it’s as a rle man or whether it’s just being in the paint to receive a pass and making a play whatever they’ve got to get him more involved in those settings they did much better much much better at that in game three if you look through Turner’s matchup data he only took two shots defended by Horford and that still ended up being a fairly common matchup he punished Drew holiday two for four there he punished Jaylen Brown didn’t miss a shot there punished OA brassette in fact he just when o O’Shea was on Miles they just went to it right that was something a lot of people talked about after game three was or game two was if they’re gonna use OA as this disruptor on defense and him be the backup deao five for a few minutes every game Turner just needs to Crush that and he did a great job of that he had half his shots with Tatum on him he had half his shots with white on him he did a much better job and the Pacers deserve credit for this too because they have to get him the ball they did a much better job of making that a weapon so if Horford is on sakam again and the the Celtics have stuck with that Turner is the key to that and those guys didn’t make their threes but collectively on twos I believe they were 18 for uh 24 no that’s terrible math what am I doing 18 for 28 that’s sensationally good they had 44 points obviously um in the in that many shots that is something the Pacers need to pick at again both cakam who’s been excellent all series and Turner punishing those smaller matchups and part of that is the Pacers getting it to him and Turner finishing plays and Turner being a little bit better in that would be taking care of the ball he gave it up too much with those five turnovers and some of that was on handles um I think that is something that the Pacers need to continue to go to in fact a little more honestly might work unless Force the Celtics to get out out of it force them to switch it up and then seak might have even more advantages and if they can’t switch it up or stop it use your size to overwhelm that right I keep talking about size being a thing but the Pacers have to keep up and use their offensive advantages to get an edge and that’s another way to do it couple more things to talk about ahead of game four to close out Today’s Show back here on lockdown Pacers thanks for making us your first listen today and every single day for your second listen check out lockdown NBA for the latest and greatest around the association including coaching rumors and news as that Carousel goes or the latest on the draft stuff after the combine or the other Series going on and they’ll be talk about this series there too um Mavs wolves lock down wolves and Mavs could be a good place for you to go next to hear about that crazy game three Mavs dominant three series leag despite three tight games what a fun series that’s been the Mavs on the right side of all of them well like that would be a you know an interesting one to see where that goes next that would be a series that I’m curious about what the woles look like down to3 and locked on woles I can tell you about it also if you went to the Indie 500 yesterday and you’re listening to this and you covering I hope you had a very fun time looked like a crazy race I’m glad they were able to get it in very exciting for Indie very exciting that it was on TV let’s close out this show let’s talk basketball um something the Celtics did that was new in game three that I thought was was really interesting and I actually thought a pretty smart adjustment from them they played Xavier tman first of all that’s a start him and uh well wishes to Xavier Tillman um given what he’s been going through in this postseason specifically in the series personally they went to a couple groups with him and Horford that also had huge Wings on the floor that’s a ton of size in fact the third most used lineup for the Celtics in game three was Jaylen Brown Jason Tatum Xavier Tilman Al Horford and Drew holiday that is just huge 130 offensive rating plus two in those minutes were the Boston Celtics who made every two-point shot they took with that lineup on the floor uh that is a huge group that is an advantage everywhere whoever the Forman is siakam’s got to be on the floor against that group because he will naturally have an advantage but I think the Celtics will go back to that and the Pacers have to figure out how to get the speed and size on the floor to combat it because that mean that that’s a two guard of Jaylen Brown or Jason Tatum like that is is just a massive group right and I think that was the only Tillman plus Horford lineup that the the Celtics actually deployed but they deployed it a lot and I think they’re going to go back to it and it’s up to the Pacers to find a way to combat that and and to play better uh against it and maybe that’s playing more size with that group I already talked about maybe that’s getting speed out there but they have to have a unique combo out there to actually combat that one uh last thing that I want to get to and kind of talk about to opine to close this one because I’ve come cut through a lot of the adjustments here um the Pacers cannot beat M themselves in a game four they didn’t beat themselves last game they only had 11 turnovers that’s much better Turners got to clean that up I talked about that but they have had a lot of fouls every game in this series right they did not shoot well from three at all in game three despite that being something they’ve been very good at all season and they’re not going to be able to generate as many good looks without halber I understand all these things if the Pacers lose three games in the series where they feel like they they beat themselves that is so deflating that is just as as humbling as it can be that you get that far in a season this far they’re still playing you get this far in a season you’re in the Conference Finals You’re The Underdogs everywhere and you give yourself so many chances and then beat yourselves like like that would hurt so much they they have to play I think a very focused and precise game to have a chance because we’ve seen the Celtics who have this giant margin for error because they generate so many good threes they have so much Talent they can have a pretty crummy game from a couple star players and Al Horford just hit seven threes and you lose or you know they just get hot at the right times like they’re so good they have so much talent on both ends of the floor top two in both offense and defense this season you cannot be imprecise you cannot beat yourself with turnovers and fouls and inaccurate shooting or poor decision- making from Beyond The Arc the Pacers have to play a m the they need to play with the focus and Tempo they had in game three and the shooting they had in TD Garden especially if halberton doesn’t play that would be my last adjustment is the play better adjustment has nothing to do with any specific thing that happened in game three just that that’s what it comes down to sometimes the play better adjustment the Wolves used it very well in the second half of game seven last round the Pacers used it very well in game seven last round uh they need to do it again if halberton does play I’ll Be fascinated to see how much different the Pacers actually look in this game compared to how they looked early in the series and how much actual ability and health he has right if he looks just perfect right away exactly like the star all-nba guy who was you know impactful and somewhat terrorizing early in the series they OD B well for the Pacers chances right they’ve been in all these games they are very capable of keeping up with the Celtics when he’s out there because he does you know he’s he gen leads a successful offense right and that’s what I’ve been talking about all series they’ve got to find a way to keep up I I think him playing is so vastly important because if he doesn’t the Pacers have to play so perfect they have to do all the stuff they did in game three and even a little better get in the lane find the right lineup combos defend well timely they need a couple roll guys to step up that didn’t happen they need to shoot a little better and they can do it they beat the Celtics in the game hurn got hurt this year they won five or six games without him this year I was trying to think of all them today Atlanta Miami that Boston game Washington Sacramento to mfu they can do it they can do these things it’s going to require them to not beat themselves uh and if he does do play they get a little bit of margin for error but their talent deficit is so big they have to play so well and these little adjustments we’ve been talking about all series many of them have been successful some not because I’m not the smartest person but I’m doing my best will be vital uh tomorrow depends what happens if they lose and the series ends as has been customary in the playoffs for the series ending game Rhett Bower will join us we’ll talk about what happened in game four together and what comes next for the Pacers as we’ve done after every series The what comes next before has been another Series this time it would be the offseason if they win rat’s not coming on who cares about that we’ll see him later we’ll talk about what went well how this worked out for the Pacers how they extended their season can they do this again was it repeatable should they feel good about where they are no one will feel good about being down 3-1 but all sorts of good stuff should they win the game and then we’ll go from there so look forward to that for you daily listeners thank you so much hope everybody’s enjoying their long weekend and enjoyed Today’s show if you did thank you I on Twitter at Tony r e and the show is there at lockon Pac I didn’t say this but check out locked on Celtics with John caral for the other side of this perspective saw him at game three 1. Pacers could not have hoped for a better season. You held your own against the celtics but the talent disparity was too big. Better luck next season.

  2. Really proud of this Pacers team. Thank you your playoff coverage Tony. I hope we can resign Siakim and get everyone else healthy. I could care less about Mavericks and Celtics.

  3. No matter what happens, Indy had a nice team, and as long as they stay healthy, who knows what heights they can reach. I know it sounds clichรฉ, but the future looks bright for them.

  4. Tony Celtics fan my whole life here living in New England! Out of all our playoff series you will be the only one who keeps my sub! Interesting to see where your pacers go! Great analysis Tony always fair and level!
