The Utah Jazz have a LEGITIMATE chance to trade up in the NBA 2024 Draft
as we know the Atlanta Hawks got the number one pick with a 3% overall chance to do so this year as amazing as that is I believe that there’s a legitimate chance more than any other year in a while that the top picks in this draft might be traded away especially the Hawks now bear with me here because I want to explain what team might go after them but JD wait a minute if you got awarded the number one two or three picks why would you ever trade off of it all right casual fan let me tell you so maybe you’re asking yourself okay there’s no way what about Victor Wim Bama and you are right I would say maybe with a little bit of push back he’s an anomaly Scouts were saying that he was the best Prospect of all time and he still might prove to be you know the goat he’s been incredible so far but you might push back and say well what about paa banero 2022 he’s taken the magic to a best of seven against the Cavs with Donovan Mitchell guy who’s also averaged over 20 points per game all right all right you’re starting to make a compelling argument not to trade what about 2021 you might say Kade Cunningham despite woes in Detroit I think we can all agree that he is still very good and finally do we have to say anything about this guy all right so you make a compelling argument not to trade these picks but is this draft any different and with a 2024 draft that Scouts are calling the worst draft in decades Atlanta and maybe a few other of these teams might be incentivized to trade off with this pick and here’s why the top player that these guys are talking about the scouts are saying that he’s probably not going to be a Fran altering player and I have heard Scouts say that these top three picks might be as good as a seventh or eighth pick on a normal draft so that’s not too hot well let’s dissect the Atlanta Hawks here Bobby marks of ESPN says that the Hawks are in desperate need of retooling now remember they have the number one pick so it’s going to be kind of interesting here well they dumped John Collins’s salary off to the Utah Jab to try and stay away from the luxury tax this year probably a good move you know but I heard that they were doing so at the beginning of the year so they could use the money to go out and get somebody someone special now they never did that and ironic enough they’re right back where they started so they have a $67 million back court next year and they’re going to have to pay the luxury tax on a non-playoff team oof well they traded a lot of their Capital to acquire de jonte Murray so one of the major issues here is that this June draft is the last draft Atlanta will have their first round pick until 2028 so will they trade this pick and why would a team even want to move up in this draft that sounds so weak maybe a team like Utah Jazz Memphis Grizzly San Antonio Spurs and and you know what you might have a compelling argument and we’re going to propose some trades here especially for our fans of the Utah Jazz but I’ll tell you this much I don’t think that this June draft you’re going to have to give up as much as you’d think to get up to the one two or three spot and again we’re going to propose a few trades and let’s Dive Right on into it so doc let me ask you something all right what would it take for the Utah Jazz who are in the 10th spot right now to move up to maybe the third or the fourth honestly I don’t think it would take as much as it normally would in a different draft like you said a lot of the scouts right now are saying that this is a very weak draft class but there’s always going to be a guarantee that one or two guys come out of it who who are going to be you know Transcendent players that happens every single year it just depends on where you’re going to find them and uh with the there no being no real consensus number one pick this year or uh number one consensus on these franchise altering players I think this would be the year it would be the easiest to move up so let’s take number four for instance that is a pick that is controlled by the San Antonio Spurs now they have four and eight already um and one of their needs that they need to address is a point guard however I believe that the Utah Jazz could swoop swoop in and take number four if they really wanted to by offering up either Colin seon and their eighth or the their 10th excuse me Colin seon in their 10th or potentially Jordan Clarkson and their 10th I think both of those pieces would fit great around Victor wanana I think while I love Colin seon uh he has proven last year that he can be efficient uh he can has really improved this ball facilitation as well and even though he’s not necess necessarily considered a veteran he is a spark plug of offense that would fit great uh next to Victor wanana so that is one I definitely think could get the Jazz to number four in terms of number three we know that the front office has already stated for the rockets that they’re not really looking to draft any more young Talent right they’re looking more for veteran pieces so there could be that potential where Utah picks up the phone gives him a call and says you know you know what what do you guys think of Jordan Clarkson he’s on a very team-friendly deal right now he was a former six-man of the year he gives you that veteran presence and you know a new change of scenery would probably be good for all parties I think that you could once again package up 10 Jordan Clarkson and possibly 31 and move up to three I think both of those trades could be viable for the Utah Jazz the Jazz have enough trade assets to where they could move up in this draft or really any other draft but um what do you think JD how do you do you like those trade proposals I mean I do I think that some people can be taking a swing on someone like Colin ston or you know Jordan Clarkson has been able to elevate his game a little bit more since he was Sixth Man of the Year however uh playing a little bit of a deil devil’s advocate here I don’t think Jordan Clarkson had the best of seasons in fact probably one of the worst shooting seasons of his career however he is a veteran guard he knows how to facilitate you know you kind of picture him as a guy who’s just kind of a flamethrower offensively but uh he can also pass the ball pretty well and he uh he has a lot of heart so I like him and I think that of those two that you were talking about the one that’s very intriguing to me is definitely the Houston Rockets like you had mentioned they I just don’t think really have a lot hold on hold on guys recording yes okay let’s we’re gonna have to restart at that some point it’s fine I’m home yeah I see that hey get outside please you’re what like what are we doing here I’ll change you in a second okay I’ll be right there okay let’s let’s just pick up a 10 minutes okay and I’m going to ask you again what do you think of those [Music] trades so JD what do you think of those two trade proposals do you think those would work out for both parties or do you think it favors one more than the other do you think they’re even possible you know I kind of feel like the more intriguing of the two for me would be the Houston Rockets one as you had mentioned before Houston isn’t really looking to continue getting younger they have some really good pieces I mean on in Thompson still developing maybe cam Whitmore as well they’ve got Jaylen green who’s emerging and so I do think that they would want to be maybe moving away from another rookie to try and add especially a number three pick dock I just I find it hard to believe that they would want to get a number three pick just to have him be coming off the bench or something but for someone like Jordan Clarkson who you proposed I mean he is a flamethrower the guy is instant offense and he’s even shown a bit of um offensive versatility you know he’s able to facilitate he got a triple double last year as Utah Jazz fans were pretty happy about and so you know something like that with uh Colin seon the number 10th pick I could see something like that being more realistic I do feel like like you also mentioned with San Antonio also feels a little bit realistic as well you know maybe they would be willing to you know take that 10th pick which could still be pretty good and then get somebody that could really be good with Victor wenyama I mean they have the core piece of Victor for their future and now they just need to start building around him and to get a bunch of young guys who you know might not be doing as well at the start might I don’t know I think San Antonio maybe wants to move their timeline up just a little who knows see I think the philosophy for San Antonio with Victor wanana should be finding established players to put around him now why would you take a swing on someone in the draft in a weak draft who’s not going to be a guarantee when you can go get a guy like Colin seon who is an established player in this league you know he’s been playing for what six or seven years now like he’s been put he’s had multiple Seasons where he’s been able to put up 20 plus points like you said he was a good facilitator for us here in Utah and he’s still growing and developing and getting better plus he’s a high energy guy I think if you put a couple high energy guys Wana it’s going to change the entire mentality and philosophy of that team so doc are you doing that if you are Utah you trading away sexon maybe Clarkson 10th pick to get the fourth or what what’s the proposal one would you do I would absolutely both of them or just one um I would do either of them if we could okay and either one would work for me and the 10 mhm now what about Houston what if they ask for Clarkson seon and the 10th are you doing that for the third pick in the draft the only problem with that is you would have to find a way to make the salaries work so they would have to be dumping off some salary in order for that to work um and then that’s where it kind of gets messy honestly if if you could give them their pick of ston or Clarkson 10 and you can say um one of the picks in 2026 I think that gets it done absolutely an unprotected pick from either Minnesota or or uh the Cavs you know that you’re giving them two picks and then an established player that’s just going to help their timeline I think it’s good for the Jazz too okay so let let me propose a few more for you we’ve got the Jazz let’s say moving up to the first or the second we’ll start with Washington who has the second pick right now they’re projected to get a guy named Zachary re AET however you know you never know with this draft it’s the board is always moving however you just had a pretty standout night as like his final playoff game where he scored 28 points in a professional league so you know he’s tantalizing and with Washington rebuilding Victor came from true yep I still think that Washington could trade down if they find somebody that they really like and if the Jazz really like somebody they could move all the way up I mean they have a lot of capital so I would propose something similar here I mean I would trade the 10th pick um maybe even our 29th pick I would trade and I would even throw in this is tough because is this might be a hot take I am very high on one particular player in this draft and I know we’re going to have a segment where we talk about the draft there’s a guy named Rob Dillingham he didn’t show well at the combine height-wise but in terms of explosiveness facilitation shooting he has it all he could definitely be like another addition or rendition rather of Trey young a small guy who can shoot the ball pass it well and I I truly see that in him I think of everybody in this draft he could be that guy you know who becomes a star and so would I be willing to trade one of our rookies or second years now like Keon or Hendrick maybe to try and get that number thick and move on um yeah I really like him so what do you think about that I think my only gripe with Rob Dillingham is the fact that he’s 160 lbs and the only three players that are around weight play for the G League outside of that if he can put on like 20 lbs and some good solid muscle and still maintain his speed I I like rob a lot I really do like I like him and Reed Shepard I think K Kentucky especially has just a history of knowing guards and knowing who to pick and who is going to really be standouts and a lot of those guards have moved on to have successful careers in the NBA you know uh sgaa is one that comes to mind you have Darius or not Darius Garland excuse me you have Jamal Murray you have Tyler hero I believe Devin Booker also went to Kentucky like there’s there’s a long list of guards that are are really standout players in the NBA like Kentucky just knows what they’re doing I don’t think Rob Dillingham or Reed Shepard are going to be any different well doc I I spoke a little bit earlier about Atlanta moving off of their pit and let me ask you something well two questions actually actually what would you be willing to trade to move up to that number one pick as like a realistic approach because I think Atlanta would be willing to maybe move down especially with uh some of their issues and retooling and things like that what would you be willing to trade to move up and who would you take number [Music] one oh boy boy I put you on the spot didn’t I did um I think if you’re going to pry that pick away from Atlanta you have to address um their their main concern which is their Center position one of the reasons why Clint capella is now on the market is because they’re most likely looking at taking uh Alexandre SAR um if you want to deprive from them yeah you could you could try to package up Walker Kessler and then three of our picks all of our picks from this year I think would probably be enough to get it done Kesler and it hurts the part with Kessler I really wouldn’t want to but the Jazz would have to be sure that that number one spot is is going to be a guy that’s going to pan out for them because Walker Kessler’s been surprisingly good for the Jazz he has a good defensive mind he has quick lateral movements um not a good three-point shooter doesn’t really stretch the flooor but I can see him and Trey young running some death by pick and roll all day every day that would be very successful would you do this if you’re a jazz fan or if you are you know Jazz front office well that once again depends on who the Jazz are looking at to take um I think that Zachary Ray I always say his name wrong re thank you I think that he has a really deep bag of offensive moves he’s really efficient at 67 he I think that he could pan out some to something incredible honestly um I just don’t know if I would take SAR at number one I would probably Reserve that spot for someone like honestly like Reed Shepard or re shy I’m saying his name wrong I’ll just call him Zach or Zach you know um outside of that I don’t know if there are a lot of guarantees especially within this top 10 you know I like even if the Jazz were to stand Pat at 10 um the guy I would be selecting is Devon Carter I think Alex SAR does have some good intangibles you know but like we’ve talked about this before I have an issue with the fact that he’s a seven-footer and he’s only netting like four rebounds a game that says you’re soft to me um and honestly that that is really worrisome in my opinion I don’t I don’t like that I don’t know either no he didn’t he really didn’t and he doesn’t seem like a guy who’s really playing to be the number one um Prospect and be the number one pick he seems like he’s kind of coasting to me and I I just don’t like that he’s had two breakout games that are both against the the ignite g-league ignite but ever since then he’s just kind of slouched again you know I don’t know if he’s the guy I would want to trade up for all right so Atlanta proposes to trade to you Walker Kessler 10th pick 29th pick and a draft pick next year for the number one probably not a draft pick next year I would I would probably part with walk ER Kessler for the number one pick and then if you do Walker Kessler 10 and 29 I would do it yeah okay interesting and you who are you taking would you fill that Center position with like Donovan kingan or Alex SAR I know you just kind of spoke about how you wouldn’t really want SAR I wouldn’t take SAR no so you try and go after another Center in the draft or just a veteran Center maybe a trade I might feel build the veteran Center hole for now um you might even use your at seven as well for right now but I would be looking at guys that are going to help improve the back court um someone to fit next to keante George really well we already know that the Jazz basically noo to trade for Deon Murray because uh Atlanta wanted Keon in the deal and Utah said no you know so um I think Stefan Castle I mean honestly I know it sounds crazy there’s something about Devin Carter that I think that he’s better than what he’s projected at he was the most athletic guy in the combine he has a great shooting stroke like he tied for first in multiple categories and he has a high octane defense that he just puts on guys he Smothers guys man like you can’t can’t teach defense like that like you can you can try but guys have to take like pride in their defense for it to be worthwhile and honestly Devin Carter plays hellacious defense I love that that’s that’s probably the guy I would select regardless of where I am him or Stefan Castle I think Stefan Castle was the second best defender on on uh Yukon you know next to Donovan kingan but Devin Carter dude he just has something that Wows me every time I watch his highlights so wait a sec you’re saying that you might take him number one honestly because of the lack and this is where it sounds crazy and this is a hot take and you know I don’t even care that it is there’s something about Devin Carter that just screams to me this kid could be the best guy in this draft and that honestly shouldn’t be that hard to believe Donovan Mitchell was taken 16th or something like that I’m pretty sure he was one of the best guys in that draft next to Jason Tatum right uh and a redraft is that what you said yeah if we were to look at that year the Donovan Mitchell was drafted what was that 2018 I think it was 2018 it might have I think I’m almost positive most certainly he uh let’s see he was runner-up Rookie of the Year and there was kma in draft too who turned out he was in the 20s yeah Ben Simmons was number one wasn’t he Ben Simmons yeah he was injured the entire year before much like a Chad hren style and then he was R year right I still don’t think he deserved that one no I don’t either but look at how Donovan Mitchell’s panned out if we knew what we knew today about him back then Donovan would have gone first second or third I don’t see why de Carter can’t be any different there’s something look when you are when you’re coming out and you’re putting up athletic numbers like he is you have a great shooting stroke you crash the glass on defense you’re this kid was netting almost nine rebounds a game JD almost nine Mar does I like Carter my only uh my only push back on him is that I don’t think he’s a number one option type player and I think that when you are going top 10 and I you know what I would even be okay with taking him at 10 but if I was number one I would be looking for a guy who I really thought could have the highest upside be my franchise altering player and I know they’re few and in between in this draft but I would take a swing on somebody that I thought could be that and I don’t think Devin Carter really has the intangibles that kind of net you a number one option who’s scoring on ISO who’s doing stuff like that he kind of reminds me more of like a JW holiday lock down Defender who could be a second or third option on a really good team he probably will any of the guys in this draft though are really those franchise like there’s going to be a couple that emerge but we don’t know where you know I Dillingham doing that I could see if everything lands on Stefan Castle he could be a guy like that if he you know shoots well which he doesn’t which I kind of don’t think he’s going to shoot well his entire career but you never know you know maybe he becomes the next Jimmy Butler you know yeah but a lot of these guys like with what you’re saying too A lot of these guys have things they’re going to have to work on Dillingham is going to have to get bigger that that just goes without saying he’s going to have to put on some sides you can’t be 164 pounds running around like that you’re going to get smashed by guys you know Stefan Castle has to improve his shooting I think SAR has to improve his toughness uh Zachary from France has to improve his defensive capabilities all these guys have things they got don’t improve on I just think the only one who is the most technically sound at this moment that I’ve been seeing is honestly Deon Carter I think that kid’s going to hit the ground running same with don’t connect there’s something about don’t connect that just screams hey I’m going to be like a breakout star on day one for the NBA thank In a good draft year, every team would follow the mantra of "drafting the best player available." But in this draft that it isn't going to be easy because all of them have their warts and there isn't as much separation between one player and the next. That's why I think teams will be open to trades. And those that keep their pick, will draft players that meet their specific needs. My favorite players in the top ten of this draft are: Reed Sheppard, Dalton Knecht, Stephon Castle and Ron Holland. Outside the top ten, I also like: Zach Edey, Tyler Kolek, DaRon Holmes, Devin Carter and Dillon Jones (Weber State).
I enjoyed listening to your discussion on the multiple options the Jazz have. Will the Jazz move up? They certainly have the assets to do so. But as with any deal, it take two to tango.
Good Morning Gentlemen. I enjoyed watching your podcast. But as an Atlanta Hawks fan there is no way we trade the #1 pick for Kessler and other picks. Any deal would have to start with Lauri plus picks.
man the hawks take sarr end of discussion
tired of u none hawks fans trying to make bogus deals worry about your own team bra
San Antonio is not trading for Jordan Clarkson or Sexton. Those are role players. Spurs need All Star players. I think you under value those first few picks.
lol nobody wants Clarkson or Sexton. Why would a team trade for them when there are better guards that will be on the bench that can be drafted
