high school/college chet is a 4 but now he’s probably a 5

He’s only going to put on more weight now with a full offseason. Rebounding isn’t his issue, it’s boxing out. He tries, and he’s really competitive, but bigger centers can move him pretty regularly. Not one time in that Dallas series did they try to attack Chet in isolation, Luka is motioning Jaden fucking Hardy to take the “DPOY” on the perimeter. We don’t need a slow footed big.
What we need is a big body, versatile four who can shoot, attack, defend, and box out. It’s a big ask, and I really don’t know who that guy is, but I trust that Sam Presti will find that.

I think Chet has proven himself capable of handling the responsibility of the rim protection and interior defense as a 5, but I think adding complementary bigs will help ease the wear and tear on him. He held up miraculously well during this season, but even with added strength this offseason, he shouldn’t have another season of going it alone like he did this year.
Having a couple 6’8-6’10 220-240lb guys that can play beside and behind him will mean that he’s not wrestling for rebounds with both opposing bigs. The rebounding issue was not just a lack of size with Chet. It was that everyone else on the Thunder side of the floor with him was 6’6 or smaller. JWill is not quite the right guy to play beside him or as a proper backup level yet. I think he could get there with a good offseason of shooting focus, but we will see.
I don’t think we even need to add a big star. Getting two 6’9-6’11 via trade or draft that will buy into our team concept and provide us with more production than Biyombo and Muscala while not being as expensive as Lauri would be ideal.

He needs support on the interior regardless.
I’m neutral on whether he should be the 4 or 5 depending on who we get that fits.
Chet is a great 5 but it’s gonna take years before he has filled out that frame.
It really isn’t a bad idea to get a big muscle motherfucker at the 5 to help him anchor the inside.
He’s not a bad player, his skillset is why we chose him. But he still needs to put on that muscle and he won’t get there in a year.
So I’m cool with whatever we do as long as we get another guy who is a damn good rebounder and interior defender.

It doesnt have to be one or the other. We should probably get a 5 anyways

And get Gafford for the 5?

Chet can be an excellent defender. However, sometimes it seems he is not doing everything he can to be an excellent defender. If you go back and watch the Dallas series, you will see that he has a problem with his arms always being at his side. He would get probably 1 more block and 3 more deflections a game if he had his arms out or up consistently and contested shots and lobs with both hands in the air.

When we replaced Giddey with Joe or Cason, we won those minutes against Mavs(51.8 netrtg swing with Joe, 60.2 netrtg swing with Cason). Giddey minutes with starters and Non-Chet minutes are two big reasons why we lost that series. We need a backup C more than a starter C.
