Watching what the Mavs are doing to the Wolves is making me think we don’t need much to contend for a title. We are a top 4 team in the league right now, possibly the second best team in the league. I don’t know what move Presti will make, but I feel confident it will be the right one to get us to the next level.

I don’t doubt he’ll try to make moves, and likely will – but Sam’s MO has always been about maintaining flexibility and keeping options open. Even if he could forsee a title win in January 2024, he would still make this trade to give us cap flexibility to help us 1. take a bad contract for some extra draft capital 2. add a player may like 3. something else.
The name of the game is to keep your options open for as long as possible

The real question to ask yourself is “what’s our salary cap situation once Dub and Chet have max extensions?” because Presti is not going to hamstring us in the luxury tax by getting a big free agent when within 2 years we’ll have 3 max players.
