History being made: Jose Ramirez joins rare air + MLB incorporates Negro League stats into records

Cleveland Guardians star Jose Ramirez continued his scorching May on Tuesday night, launching his 11th home run of the month in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies (GameTracker). Ramírez is now tied for the major-league lead with New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker for the most home runs hit this month.
Only Kyle Tucker (18), Gunnar Henderson and Aaron Judge (17 apiece) have hit more homers this year in MLB.

Jose Ramirez, 31, started the season mired in a slump. Through his first 28 games, he had hit just .252/.286/.437 with five home runs and six other extra-base hits. He’s corrected his course in May, entering Tuesday night with a .284/.355/.663 slash line and 16 extra-base knocks. Ramírez came into play with seasonal marks that included a .266/.318/.537 slash line (142 OPS+) and an estimated 1.9 Wins Above Replacement, according to the calculations housed at Baseball Reference. | https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/guardians-jose-ramirez-continues-climbing-mlb-home-run-leaderboard-with-11th-blast-in-may/

Babe Ruth has long been considered the greatest player in baseball history, with arguments made for Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Barry Bonds and even Shohei Ohtani.

Well, there’s now a new player entering the debate: Hall of Fame catcher Josh Gibson.

Gibson, and all the former Negro League players, will have their statistics officially incorporated into Major League Baseball’s historical records, according to a person familiar with the announcement. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity since the official announcement is scheduled for Wednesday.

It’s been 3 1/2 years since MLB officially elevated Negro Leagues’ statistics to ‘Major League’ status in December, 2020. | https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2024/05/28/negro-leagues-statistics-officially-incorporated-into-major-league-record-book/73882293007/
