Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Golden State Warriors, Draymond Green’s Analysis and the NBA Playoffs
it is always a distinct pleasure to have the voice of the NBA at least one of the two voices I feel like there’s two people that can claim that title Mike Breen’s an obvious one bang and then there’s Mark Jones he was calling Warriors games in the NBA finals in 2022 on ESPN that alone should endure should endear I’m sorry anyone who considers themselves a member of dub Nation forever to the voice that is markk Jones he’s going to join me next I also want to quickly add um I’m moving I don’t know I’m guessing all of you have experienced going through a move moving from one house to another it’s an absolute nightmare it’s one of the most unpleasant experiences on the planet I’m about to embark on it uh so this might be the last time you see this set um I might have to go on vacation uh and and and take off a week or so so this might be the last time you see me in this set um and regardless I just wanted to remind folks follow me on threads dog wild that’s where you can always uh be updated on everything at least that’s going on with me if if that matters if you care um but yeah so just follow me on threads of dog wild and in case you don’t see shows for a few days that is because I’m about to embark on a move and there’s going to be uh and my background my set is going to look different so uh just an FYI on that otherwise let’s get into it with Mark Jones the voice of the NBA here on locked on Warriors you are locked on Warriors your daily Golden State Warriors podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team everyday [Music] thank you for making lock on not me he’s The Voice of the NBA he’s one of the most talented individuals in the media industry he’s also an all-around genuine good dude he knows his stuff and I’m always delighted to have him on the show Mark Jones you can follow him I believe on all social media platforms at Mark Jones ESPN I personally prefer your Instagram account but I’m sure you’re doing amazing stuff on all of it Mark great to see you sir uh how are you doing today I know you’re on the east coast and um your first impressions of these incredible NBA playoffs it’s this has been fun and calling this stuff amazing I appreciate it yeah it’s a first of all you do a great job Cyrus keep us great work man it’s a it’s a wonderful podcast wonderfully informational and entertaining uh I always try and catch it when I can and thanks for having me on um these playoffs have been ultra competitive even in the final analysis when you look at you know the Boston Celtics sweep in the Eastern Conference Finals all those games went down to the last few possessions I believe all but one of them went all the way to clutch time um and then you look at the Dallas Minnesota series right now it’s the same thing after the first three games I believe the total margin of victory was 13 points that the Mavericks had won all three games from which is ridiculously hyper competitive so I love it this is my favorite time of the year um you know had some Classics to call this year had some great finishes I what comes to mind the Milwaukee Indiana series that I was on uh although that one didn’t last that long either just some of the great finishes in that series uh you know NBA playoffs are fantastic I don’t I don’t golf Cyrus so like anytime there’s not a game on I freak out so that’s why that’s why I want seven game series I don’t necessarily care who wins I just want a seven game series because uh otherwise I’m forced into alternative programming and hey this time of the year at least now we have the WNBA that we can watch which is fantastic uh the compe basketball there is is fun to watch too and uh you know with all the you know Angel ree coming into the league and Caitlyn Clark coming into the league and a host of talented rookies in the W and you know the Golden State Warriors the Valkyries coming in in a year uh I’m looking forward to all that so yeah this is my favorite time of the year once you hit mid- April through through the late part of June through the end of the NBA Finals catch our breath the draft catch our breath summer league catch our breath preseason camps Yeah Yeah so basically it’s year round the NBA right absolutely and I’m curious to know before we get into a a basketball what is the alternative programming you’re watching when basketball ends because I’m with you to me the first and second rounds of the NBA Playoffs it’s a pure joy it’s literally you have games every day this year has been particularly fascinating in the sense of the the the talent is just unreal like you had everyone of these Series in some other years you could call these a Conference Finals an NBA finals and we’re enjoying this in the first and second rounds but when basketball isn’t on and when and that includes the WNBA what are you watching I’m very curious man you know what my wife and I uh have really gotten into um uh Abbot Elementary the sitcom on ABC about the inner city school in Philadelphia and uh it it’s really cool they’ve had some uh uh interesting guests that have been on the show I think Andre godala was on it in one episode last year um so it’s it’s a really funny well written extremely well scripted sitcom and I don’t usually go for sitcoms but you know the just the diversity of characters in that uh makes it a real interesting and fun watch so we kind of sit around on non-basketball nights and binge watch you know two or three episodes at a time I love fun binge watching to me is one of my Delights I know that’s weird maybe and and there’s a Netflix documentary uh side that I want to watch too that on uh on David Beckham that an NBA executive told me about that’s really good it’s a four-part series so that’ll come after we finish catching up on Abbot Elementary so you know speaking of NBA Executives uh the Warriors had an incredible one for over 10 years Bob Meers who’s now working with you uh every time he talks I’m my my ears always perk because he’s he’s revealing in a lot of these attributions his own insights in terms of previous like uh you know evaluations of draft picks like you know he he’s really opening up to the world what goes on in his mind and that always just fascin that that always intrigues me what’s it been like working for him I know your paths don’t cross that often but your thoughts on Bob Meyers as the broadcaster for your network ESPN yeah just to Echo what you said I mean some of his insights particularly when he’s in the studio I feel he has a little bit more time to expound on some of the Dynamics of the decisionmaking process on certain players and uh contract terms and lengths and renewals or not um it’s it’s nice to have somebody with his wealth of experience and success in that chair uh being part of the espn/abc family and uh yeah i’ I’ve sat around with Bob a little bit and and chopped it up and uh it’s great I I love to hear some of the stuff that um never happens is sometimes as interesting or more interesting than the stuff that actually does happen so um it’s it’s nice to be able to tap into his knowledge and and to hear it come out on the during the course of broadcast and usually when he’s on games uh if if a game is a blowout that’s where you have to listen closer to him because that’s when he has more time to kind of go a little bit off script right it’s a 20 25o lead for one team and that’s when he can wander a little bit and uh instead of those concentric circles being real tight on the game itself he can get into some of those outer orbits I was thinking the exact same thing you read my mind in terms of the the blowouts when he’s a color commentator because he starts and those ramblings are maybe the most interesting part of the broadcast um yeah I I it’s a treat every time I hear him I feel like that was a nice grab by your network to to hire him and bring him in I hope that continues um rewinding a minute or two here you brought up uh the Milwaukee Bucks and I would be remiss if we didn’t talk at least some Warriors here while I have you uh my and this is probably a pipe dream this is probably nothing more than a fantasy but my fantasy my dream Target for the Warriors is Giannis an TMO and the reason why I bring him up is because look he recently came out and said all the right things about Milwaukee and staying there but if you look at this roster um I don’t think they have a chance in hell of maintaining Championship Contender status they’re their aging the moment you get past Chris Middleton on the roster the talent precipitously drops and it is my dream that Giannis looks at the landscape of his franchise and realizes I’m not winning here and I feel like the Warriors have the best trade package in terms of ready to go young Talon in addition of first round picks to get him again this is just a dream but is there any is there a tinge of reality to to what I fantasize for or am I just completely on drugs your thoughts sir I think there’s definitely reality uh in what you’re touching on because uh I for one believe that Giannis will not finish his career in Milwaukee um I’m not sure what the next destination will be but um just listening to some of the Echoes of his conversations and statements and it’s it’s a little bit of a hunch and a feel too I admit that which could be inaccurate but um when you look at the roster too it’s it’s really a tight tight wind with the people they have now with he and Damon Middleton and they came up really short this year a large part of that of course was because of the injury Onis but uh they lack in a lot of places to contend in an Eastern Conference that isn’t nearly as competitive or doesn’t have the depth as the Western Conference you look at Golden State the number 10 seed in the west compared to uh you know the Atlanta Hawks the number 10 seed in the East and it’s not even close in terms of the number of wins right so I I would think that yeah golden state has an attractive package that they can put together for Yannis and I think it’s a place uh like Golden State a metropolis like San Francisco a a metropolis like New York a metropolis like uh Miami that could ultimately lure him out of Milwaukee yeah I and he’s he’s my dream Target I love Jonathan kaminga but I feel like if you’re going to trade him there’s only a very small handful of people I would personally consider and Giannis ano is one of them um but again it’s it’s there there needs to be so much in the in the imaginations for this to happen regardless Mark uh stick with me please because we gotta pay some bills here um we got plenty more with Mark Jones the voice of the NBA uh and you hear him regularly on ESPN a lot more to [Music] come foremost though let’s give some love to our one sponsor for this day and that’s game time Mark summer is here you just mentioned you’re about to have some downtime um do you what do you do in the summer like do you go to events uh you mentioned you like to binge watch I Sim I’m I’m a total home body so I’m with you um but do you ever go out there do you see baseball games concerts what’s the summer like from Mark Jon yeah I told you a little bit earlier life my life is basketball basketball is my life um earlier today I was in the gym watching Jeff Green Alex Lynn and a couple of NBA players work out at Stan Remy’s gym here it’s about 15 20 minutes from my house in Miami and Ronnie Taylor has a gym where a lot of NBA guys work out in play as well the five on fers are starting to ramp up uh in Earnest now the guys are starting to come back into town and settle back into their South Florida residences and uh I sit around in the sidelines s I’m the guy at the barber shop that goes to the shop but doesn’t get my haircut I just hang I love that that’s me that’s me in the summertime yeah watching NBA guys work out no I absolutely love that and that’s why that’s one of the many reasons why you’re so knowledgeable um you always drop these incredible nuggets during your broadcast I pick up on all of it and I respect it but regardless if you’re out there this summer and you want to go see sporting events you know there there’s a lot of basketball games going on concerts theater there’s no better place to get tickets than game time simply simply because you get a view of the seats a perfect view of the seats that you’re contemplating buying on their app or their website and you don’t have to wait or you can wait until the last minute if you’re spontaneous and you know you decide hey I want to go to this event this game that’s happening tonight they have an incredible inventory you don’t you can actually succeed finding tickets last minute with game time and maybe the best part is their low price guarantee if you buy tickets from game time and you happen to see those tickets in the same row or section from another ticket broker at a lower price they will refund the difference plus an extra 10% you can’t beat that so so sign up download the game time app create an account use the code locked on NBA for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again create an Florida so one more step to the Stanley Cup Championship on the way I’m going to use game time to get some there you go game time will love that and uh and have fun I mean that to me as a spectator and and I don’t know if you agree with me or not but hockey to me is the best to watch in person right it’s incredible uh so have fun if you go uh and follow Mark Jones on all social media platforms at Mark Jones ESPN including Instagram Twitter you name it uh Mark uh these these Western Conference Finals um thankfully were salvaged uh last night the min timber wolves prevented a sweep and it’s you know Conjuring up you know aspirations of of being the first team to come back from a three deficit um but you know besides that storyline besides that narrative is the fact that Kyrie Irving has become a sort of a Reclamation in a lot of people’s eyes um he’s playing phenomenal basketball uh I’m curious to know what your thoughts are though about the fact that a lot of people are out there suddenly claiming that Kyrie’s turned a leaf or that this is a different person now what are your thoughts on on the the whole discussion around Kyrie yeah I’ve always been a huge uh Kyrie Irving fan his talent is unimpeachable right it’s unassailable uh people had some questions about his motives and his character in Brooklyn I’m not sure that Brooklyn had the the correct kind of infrastructure around him and the climate for him to be successful uh knowing Kai a little bit uh knowing a lot of people in his tight Circle uh knowing his father dredrick some I’ll tell you this I know that Kai at the time was in the midst of a and still is in the midst of a kind of uh Spiritual Awakening you know a a special type of uh growth of faith and finding out uh who he is what he’s all about we saw it the other night paying tribute to uh his indigenous uh Heritage from on the mom’s side of his family and I think with some of his statements uh in the media that I I think were misconstrued because of what our conventional quote unquote view of history is uh Kai’s view is a little bit different and sometimes the different view is the non-popular view although it might be the true view of History um so I I think it’s great to see him play the way he is um and Nico Harrison the general manager deserves all the credit in the world of being able to cash in on the frequency and gravity and strength of the relationship that he had previously with Kai as an executive with Nike and uh what a master stroke I mean to see what it’s developed into now and Kyrie is in a very happy space right now as a father uh as a partner um and he is just blooming and I don’t even think we’ve seen the best of him yet I mean he’s still getting better you know even more so than the side step three against the Golden State Warriors to win the championship I’m sorry I didn’t want to bring it up but I still think there’s a I think there’s a second act of Kyrie Irving coming uh because of the climate around him and um you know I think the Dallas media has been a little bit um tolerant um and uh open-minded about who he is and what he’s about and that’s helped absolutely um and again his performance has been outstanding um a lot of people were talking about Anthony Edwards being the next Jordan and I and I still think that potential exists um in my opinion this is just a reminder what’s going on in this Western Conference Finals of how difficult it is to win a championship uh there’s a reason why um players don’t accomplish that feat at such a young age right Jordan was 28 LeBron was 27 28 in that range uh you know Rick Barry was on the show the other day he was in his 30s you go across the board uh people players star players just don’t hoist that trophy at 22 years of age yeah this series is reminding people why um what are you seeing from this series do you think Minnesota has a shot and just your opinion on Anthony Edwards who I think will eventually be a champion and will re incredible Heights but maybe not yet yeah and he can thank Steve Kerr for the motivation yes along the journey right you need to play harder is that as hard as you can go during their workout with the Warriors when he was coming out of college but I I think Minnesota has an opportunity and to what you said it’s true I mean he’s 22 years old you just have to develop some scars before you win um it’s a question of how many I mean look at Luca two years ago swept out of the Western Conference Finals by the Golden State Warriors at what was he 23 24 at the time exactly yeah you know had just got and and okay Anthony Edwards won’t get swept here but it they’ve got a very imposing Hill to climb a daunting Hill to climb to you know finish this thing out and you know we’ve seen I’ve seen in the last couple years now um the Miami Heat come from well they were up three nothing Boston came back to force a game seven in Boston last year in the Conference Finals and Miami won game seven in Boston which is incredible you look at the numbers I think about 78% or 80% of home teams win in a best of seven series and it tilted the other way against the odds in that one so you know I don’t I don’t think there’s any reason why Minnesota can’t come back but it’s going to rely on you know it’s a heliocentric team it’s about Anthony Edwards and Carl Anthony towns is one of those guys at orbits around him Edwards is seeing a lot of bodies defensively I mean there was one sequence yesterday I can remember it vividly where he had the ball on the wing and the slot and Drew a double team he he beat the double team got into the paint and you had um Gafford stepping up and it was uh another player from Dallas helping off the weak the strong side corner which you never do uh helping off the strong side corner so he had four bodies and he sprayed it out to the wing for a three that cat was able to cat Cas in on but I I still think it’s going to be how does Minnesota play the spacing game because in the one sequence they had Kyle Anderson who’s not a spacer Rudy go who’s not a spacer on both short corners on the opposite sides of the lane and then cat on the wing and I think it was um Jaden McDaniels this was after Carl Anthony towns had filed out of the ball game so that’s the name of the game for them and the other thing is the key number for Carl for um Anthony Edwards is 25 field goal attempts if he doesn’t shoot I think he’s got to shoot the ball at least 23 to 25 times a game even if he’s hunting shots because if he’s stressing the defense stressing those double teams activating the blender right getting Dallas in rotation like rotisserie chicken now you’ve got a shot right now you’ve got a shot and that’s that’s what they were able to do last night at the offensive end you know because their defense is still been performing pretty well yeah but their offense is what has bogged them down a lot of this series absolutely um and sorry for the for laughing the oh it’s all good man you Dro you’re just BR you’re brilliant at what you do man uh you know Draymond Green uh has been in the broadcast booth and he’s been riling a lot of people up for for the simple fact that there is clearly a bias there I don’t think the bias is against Minnesota per se maybe it is but I I personally I don’t think so but clearly Rudy goar that is a bias that is a person that Draymond has has very deep feelings toward um we all remember the headlock incident resulting in the suspension hey that was a misdemeanor and but what are your thoughts on that do you like Draymond in the broadcast be do you think it’s inappropriate he’s got fantastic insights you know I I think when you hear his opinions as it pertains to Rudy goar defensive player of the year you’ve got to dilute it a little bit and take some of the uh vitriol out of it uh but don’t lose the Insight that he’s giving you along the way because it’s pertinent and it’s valuable a lot of times but I I think he’s doing a fantastic job you know especially when it comes to you know when they start talking about schemes defensively and and matchups whether uh Minnesota should be putting two on the ball and blitzing Luca or you know not stranding Rudy on an island um whatever Draymond says with me is fine because he’s walk that walk and he’s talk that talk so uh I I think he’s doing a fantastic job on the on the Inside the NBA show I totally agree and I love that he was giving Daniel Gafford like like coaching pointers during that post game show I don’t know if you saw that was that was comedy sure was Mark excuse me you’re wearing the blue and gold not of the Warriors right now for the people listening to the podcast uh you’re wearing BL the blue and gold of the San Jose State Spartans your daughter is is officially an alma moer of that program uh kudos to her Sophia she’s been a guest on this program I hope to bring her back on soon um what tell me about your daughter man Sophia have played for the team uh as a dad of someone who played division one college basketball and who I’m guessing is aspiring to following your footsteps as a broadcaster describe that experience for the a audience please man the last four years have been uh an incredible journey with my daughter Sophia from 2020 moving her into her dorm um you know the team the Women’s Basketball team having to relocate to uh Phoenix Arizona and play games from there um you know her um uh battling covid with a couple other people on the team being able to bounce back from that going through ACL surgery bouncing back from ACL surgery coming back playing the next season and then going through an ACL surgery on the other knee and the laborious rode back to get back on the court and to play um she is as tough as any professional or Collegiate athlete I’ve ever ever met I’m not just saying that side because she’s my daughter too to come back and to make it to the court and it didn’t happen without a lot of uh tearful FaceTime calls from Sophia back home to dad and mom um but uh she was able to get across the Finish Line I’ll tell you how great the NBA fraternity is I have to share the story with you um through a mutual friend Jamal Murray who also had an ACL injury found out about my daughter’s last couple months of rehab and her struggle goes through it and uh out of the blue he facetimes her and had a great 20 minute FaceTime call with my daughter and encouraged her and had a lot of relatability about their common experience and battling back from ACL injuries some of the doubt that he went through she related to and vice versa so um that was integral that was important in getting her across the finish line and and uh I know he’s rival in the Western Conference but nobody can say anything bad about Jamal Murray for for me from here on in being able to to help my daughter across the Finish Line like that no what a what a a thoughtful uh act on his part that and and he struggled with that ACL injury too so I know he he understands what’s that’s incredible that’s a great story yeah sorry goe yeah yeah no she she she made it across the Finish Line man and uh and walked the stage on Friday and picked up her degree in in Communications broadcast journalism and did it uh sumam La it wasn’t like me when I graduated they said thank you [Music] L my up with that C+ with that that 2.5 exactly cross the finish line as well but without the accolades I’m I’m totally with you for my undergraduate degree I was the same and and sopia was my student a journalism student at San Jose State and she was exemplary um I taught like AP style writing she picked it up immediately I could tell right off the bat that that the progyny fit the mold and then some uh Kudos there you you know a lot of people don’t know and congrats to Sophia as well I hope to get bring her back on the show soon a lot of people don’t know this about you and that is that you’re the voice of the Sacramento Kings um you know the Warriors Steve KR came out recently and for the first time ever revealed that there’s a Finish Line that he almost did not come back to coach after this past season he signs a two-year extension uh this might be it for Kerr’s head coach but Mike Brown is also in the news because contract talk extensions with him have been tabled um what’s going on there I mean if you know anything or at least your what are your insights on Mike Brown you know I can I I can’t you know I can’t give you any kind of uh W bomb or I know I’m not updated news yeah yeah I because I I just simply don’t know but I I can tell you that um I have a feeling that they will work it out at some point um probably sooner rather than later when you consider the fact that and I saw it happen in real time year one was a total alchemized franchise that hadn’t been to the playoffs in 16 years for him to change culture Sai in real time practice by practice this bus ride by bus ride shoot around by shoot around game by game I can remember him calling time out in the game and taking Terrence Davis out on the court and showing him as the low man in help you had to be drawn all the way over and up higher above the restricted area Circle and he’s teaching during the game while the rest of the team is waiting to hear from him the that that’s how you create accountability and he did that in year one took it a step further in year two and you look at the defensive Improvement in the king’s franchise from 25th in year 1 to I believe we ended up 14th or 15th in year two that speaks volumes about what Mike Brown’s coaching is worth on the open market and you look at what Frank vogle just signed for you look at uh Doc Rivers what he signed for you look at Monty Williams yeah he just he just got a bag so you know uh in the in the words of the famous actor in The Wire the price of the brick is going up you don’t want to wait too long that’s why you’re the best man and and I bring up M partly because like you said before he he joined the kings that was a more bound franchise he comes in turns it around immediately and I guarantee if the Kings don’t appreciate him the Warriors will want to snag him up immediately if he becomes available so um curious to see what happens there uh with with the Kings your your team um that you you call uh almost almost all 82 games Mark I know you’re a busy person I’m Gonna Let You Go anything You’ like to promote before we call it a WAP today boy nothing just just your lock on Warriors broadcast and uh enjoy being on this and yeah you can catch me more so on Instagram than Twitter these days okay U I’m I’m going with the hard visuals they’re a little easier to deal with and uh it’s not nothing in particular coming up just NBA Summer League you know I’ll I’m planning to be there uh planning to be at the California classic of course the Warriors are in it the kings are in it uh it’s a it’s a nice little bit of uh summer basketball where you get a window into what lies ahead with all the respective teams that’ll be there so yeah I’ll be in uh Northern California in July and then in the desert in Las Vegas in the latter part of July from both those so catch me there yeah I love it PE there’s a good reason why absolutely love when you call games because you’re you’re the man you’re the man there’s no nothing else to say about that I appreciate you sir I can’t I’m always just so grateful that you take time out of your business schedule to come on this show uh thank you congrats to Sophia hope you hope the rest of your family is doing phenomenal have a fantastic summer man just en enjoy life sounds like you’re doing it continue on sir thank you headed to the beach and thanks to everyone else for joining I've always liked and respected kyrie on and off the floor.
Don’t think Gianni’s is going to come to the warriors he said two years he’s not that type of guy to pick up and leave. Even after this years playoff he said that him and the team will be back at this again next season
Is it a contract year for kyrie ?
Wiggs for Allen they give us # 2, this year and next
The warriors can’t really afford these stars cause they’re either injured prone or ridiculously to pricey to acquire. They don’t need to get rid of everybody and be like the suns and nuggets with no depth. They should just trade Wiggins for John Collins and sign Gordon Hayward and evan fournier to vet minimums. Buy a second round pick and draft Baylor shierman and possibly use the 52th pick to get a solid big.
What happened to Kylen mills ?
