Knicks offseason options including Isaiah Hartenstein and targeting a star | Begley’s Mailbag | SNY
[Music] welcome to an offseason edition of Begley’s mailbag here on sny.tv I’m Ian Begley sny’s NBA Insider and I am here to answer your questions about the Knicks and the NBA let’s start off with the cooler and the cooler wants to know does anyone really believe the Knicks would have been a two seed in the playoffs this year if Giannis Lillard and B and Butler did not get hurt look I think cooler ever the contrarian I really I like your takes on Twitter I respect them but you know injuries are a part of the postseason uh Milwaukee I don’t think they were lighting the world on fire before Giannis got hurt and then you could say something similar about the Knicks like the Knicks dealt with injuries obviously up until the end and I think if they had the team that beat Philadelphia healthy and intact going into that Indiana series they would have won that Pacers series now if you’re saying would they have ended up in the two seed uh based on the regular season I I think yes I mean everybody had dealt with injuries over the course of regular season but if you’re saying you know did they benefit from the East being kind of depleted by injury yeah sure but you know I think other teams did as well uh but certainly the injury bug I think hit everybody and I think if you’re going to isolate those teams you should include the Knicks if you are talking about injuries uh but I appreciate you cooler got one for from TMS can the Knicks afford both Mitchell Robinson and Isaiah hartenstein TMS wants to know the answer is yes Mitchell Robinson already under contract for next year Isaiah hartstein the Knicks can exceed the salary cap to resign him what they can offer is limited because they have what’s called his early bird rights because he’s been on the team for two years so they can offer him a contract that starts as high as 17 million and change now other teams obviously with cap space can offer more than that to heart and in free agency but the Knicks offer can can go no higher than that if if hartstein accepts that then the Knicks would have you know near $40 million tied up into the center position which is a significant amount of money for that position but obviously hartenstein and Robinson have been a big part of New York’s success over the past couple years so maybe the knickers are comfortable with that allotment for that position got one from blames blam first time long time he says uh have the Knicks pursuit of a star changed at all with Brunson emerging as a top 10 player I no I don’t think so I think they still would be opportunistic and aggressive if the right opportunity presented itself um that’s kind of how they’ve been over the last couple years you go back two summers ago Donovan Mitchell they were aggressive there where they thought Mitchell would have been a really good fit they’ve been less aggressive in other instances less willing to uh put together a really significant trade package in other instances I’m sure if male Bridges uh were available via trade and the Nets were willing to send him to New York I don’t see that being a realistic scenario but if it was I’m sure the Knicks would put together a strong trade package for Mel Bridges so I think right scenario yes they would be aggressive I don’t think brunson’s Ascension has changed that maybe it’s changed the hierarchy of where that player would come in and fit maybe he comes in and fits underneath Brunson but the idea that they are you know not going to pursue a top player if that player becomes available and they see him as a fit I don’t think that’s the case I think they still would be aggressive and I think they will be got one from Mack Mack wants to know have you heard any word on Haren Stein’s preference on where he would land would want to land this off season uh there speculation leading him being backed to New York was wondering if you’d heard anything different I have not I mean I I think that he is kind of he’s St hinted stated directly that he wants to be back here uh I believe that he said that he would have taken less to stay with the Clippers um because he liked it there so I think there’s a pattern there of him being open to maybe not chasing the top top dollar on the market if there’s a situation where he feels comfortable we know he’s comfortable in New York we know that the Knicks will make him a priority in free agency I think that was part of the reason why they didn’t go uh to a high high number with Emanuel quickly on those extension talks last fall because they wanted to make sure they had the the financial wherewithal to to be uh aggressive on hartenstein and make the the the offer that they’re able to make so they want him back he wants to be back it would take a team I think coming over the top of the Knicks offer significantly and some teams can do that um but you know I think you’re talking about 20 million north of 20 million and I don’t know if anybody goes there maybe they do but I think if everything is kind of near equal or even even if the offer from another team is is slightly higher I could see him coming back to New York because of his comfort level here the way he fits with this team’s culture more of a comment than a question from David yafi Nick should go after Demar D rozan in free agency the Knicks will be pretty Limited in what they can spend in free agency uh they’ll have an exception but I think D rozan would be after and would command more money than the Knicks exception is worth so then you’re talking about maybe a sign in trade which really gets complicated especially if the Knicks are at certain salary levels uh with the new CBA rules so gets tricky it’s also worth noting on D rozan that I don’t think that the Knicks were were strongly strongly interested prior to the trade deadline on D Roan I think that there were there were people who felt that he would be a good fit but the consensus I don’t think was there on D rozan does that change now entering the summer I’m not sure it may but it seems like the Rosen would be kind of too rich or out of the Knicks price range in free agency uh so I think that’s where it sits at the moment that’ll do it for this edition of Begley’s mailbag here on sny.tv but keep an eye out for us coming up here because we will have another mailbag between now and the NBA draft The whole East benefited from the Knicks being injured wait till next year let’s run it back
Ian you're the absolute man, really appreciate your work and the way you go about your business. I hope you're with the Knicks for a long, long time.
Demar would cost less than others trade wise
I would really like Hartenstein to stay, he’s such fellow bro to his teamates
Ian you're the absolute best for this man, looking forward to this free agency this summer
Run it back.
Ihart is gone… for money reason how they gonna give og all that money and bring in another star unless you are moving randle and they dont want to do that. So ihart and bojan got to leave for money reasons. Take the money build up depth then use draft picks
Hire Allan Houston to the coaching staff to teach them how to make free throws!
Knicks should def. Have a quite off season, that team they had mid season could had won the title this season. Maybe not next season, but I think a lot of these guys deserve another shot at winning it all.
Trade Robertson please.
