The REAL Jordan Rules

The REAL Jordan Rules

my teammates are going to be really pissed off but I’m going to tell you the Jordan rules come up I’m joking it looked like Jordan rules with this we knew he was going to put the ball on the ground and everybody saw this and we said that our deal is to push him left and they said well he can’t go left he can he’s just going to put it in his right hand we knew that Joe Dumar was 220 lb Michael was 190 if we came in big he was going to try to shoot over us he was not going to pass it the difference is LeBron can see over us so we knew that we could we take away their one threat the rest of the guys didn’t have what it took to beat us in the Triangle you get hypnotized because a guy’s run to a position you go I can’t let him stand on the box without me touching him which opens up the other side and the ball is rotated and the guy’s running off and then you’re thinking about where’s my man to the point where you become selfish on defense and I’m only guarding my guy which made the offense work because then we couldn’t double Michael we couldn’t push him to where we wanted to because he was catching the ball with he wanted to

John Salley joins the Gil’s Arena podcast and shares a story about how they locked up Michael Jordan in the 1989 Eastern Conference Finals. He and the Bad Boy Pistons built a defensive triangle scheme that became known as the “Jordan Rules”. They would double him and force him to his left to make him uncomfortable. The rest of the Chicago Bulls team could not beat the Detroit Pistons and they knew that was how they would win the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.

Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

  1. To prevent him from going right because he can’t shoot left Michael Jordan shot more does left-hand

  2. Imagine a 190 pound guy was making the pistons sweating and having sleepless nights 😂. MJ the greatest

  3. The difference……MJ got in that gym and put in that WORK 🔥💯

Mike went from 190 to a chiseled 215.

You could see it too. His shoulders and arms filled out.

Lebron would have run to the Celtics or some other team.

This from.a Celtics fan of 45+ years. Jordan put in that work and said he's not taking that from the Pistons anymore.

    RESPECT.

  4. Force them where they don’t want to go and show multiple help defenders; foul before you give up an easy layup.
So the so-called Jordan rules are basically what every team does to defend today’s superstars?

  5. And people will argue that the triangle didn't boost Mike's greatness and the Bulls longevity..😏
No pun intended, but BULLSH*T!!! Tex was an absolute genius for that idea. There's no defense to it especially when you have the players they had at the time. It was perfect!!!

  6. Look big bill wasn't there to Score but he held his own! Against other Center's especially Ewing and that's why he got 3 💍 Ring's Jordan rules worked 1 season because after he was getting beat up by Detroit Mj's teammates say he worked out the next Season he wasn't that same guy and the rest was His-story!! P.S old long John Sally got a ring too wit Mj also and Sally you never played with Against LeBron???

  7. But yall ain't even take away the 1 threat. Mike averaged 30 6 an 6 vs you guys while shooting 48%. Make it make sense

  8. Ultimately, the bottom line was this: once the rest of the Bulls stepped up, it was over. Salley acknowledged that when he said that they had only one threat. When the others became more consistent, you could not just focus on MJ.

  9. 😮 this guy was so irrelevant I think he saw more of Michael Jordan's bottom of his sneakers than anybody he was dumped on so many times between passing out towels

  10. Except he did beat you. And Jordan could see over you, since he jumped much higher. What changed was his teammates got better and helped him out when they couldn’t in the past. You didn’t stop Jordan, you hoped to contain him by beating him to a pulp. But In doing that you only helped ignite the flame that made him the greatest athlete in the history of sports.

  11. The Jordan Rule that the Commissioners and referees made, because Jordan would go to the commissioner of the NBA and complain about being fouled.
Older referees would tell the younger referees, when Jordan drives to the hole and there's a crowd around him, call a foul automatically on any of them guys, to put Jordan on the line, Jordan has add more help than any NBA player ever, besides LeKaren James, neither of them the greatest ever.

  12. The only way they could stop him was to foul him every time he got the ball…they didn't need kno rule for lebum😂😂

  13. I found that the best way to defend Michael Jordan is to have him go baseline. Sure there is highlights of him making spectacular plays. But if he got forced baseline he would abandon drives and pass out of the post up. If he was squeezed and cut off. He hated dribbling baseline. He couldn't cutback to his left effective enough to be a threat coming off the baseline. Love was better at countering this obstacle that Jordan had in his game. Also Jordan if he did continue to drive would kick to the big man to get him a bucket cause it was easier. So no matter the 85 great plays you seen him make from the right side baseline. He fucking hated getting trapt to that side cause he couldn't get out and score. But of course it's Jordan and he would sometimes make plays even fade away when he got pinched down at the baseline. But the success rate was awful. Same with Bird. Squeeze him to the baseline and you can guarantee he had like a 20% chance of doing anything successful with the ball but pass.
