Likely Coaching Staff Changes (Regardless if Kenny leaves or not):

Sidenote: Last time Kerr did a pretty significant change of his staff was after the 2021 play-in loss where he let Jarron Collins, Luke Loucks, & Aaron Miles (more lost to the Celtics) go & replaced them with Kenny Atkinson, Jama Mahalela, & Dejan Milojević (RIP)

It’s an unsettled time for the Warriors’ coaching staff. Lead assistant Kenny Atkinson is one of the favorites t0 land the head coaching job in Cleveland. If Atkinson gets it, Steve Kerr will have to fill a large vacancy next to him on the bench.

But, league sources indicate, the Warriors are contemplating a coaching staff addition regardless of whether the Cavaliers hire Atkinson, which would follow the Mike Brown and Jama Mahlalela departures in recent years and the tragic loss of Dejan Milojević this past January.

The Warriors had some conversation with former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham in recent weeks, per league sources. That isn’t expected to materialize. But it is a signal of the Warriors’ desire to add a big-name assistant, and indications are they are in search of either a former head coach or former player to fill the role. If Atkinson leaves, they may add two assistant coaches. It remains a fluid time across the league in the coaching world.

Klay Thompson FA Update: No Deal Still. Klay prioritizing winning+paid > just paid:

As the decision on his future nears, there’s been no notable movement from either side toward a resolution, league sources said.

The Warriors maintain a desire to retain Thompson at the right price once other aspects of their roster retool get clarified. But they haven’t exactly been beating down his door to work out the framework for an extension (which can be signed at any time).

Thompson wants to win. Don’t expect him to chase the largest possible offer from the Detroit Pistons or Charlotte Hornets, even if that’s the correct financial or leverage move. But there are plenty of cap-space teams with a clearer upward path to contention than the Warriors. That includes the Oklahoma City Thunder, Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic.

Important Upcoming Dates noted by Slater:

  • June 24: Kevon Looney’s contract goes from $3 million guaranteed to all $8 million guaranteed unless he is released.
  • June 27: This is the second round of the NBA Draft. The Warriors bought the 52nd pick from the Indiana Pacers during the Cory Joseph trade in February. They’ve spent the last couple of weeks working out a bunch of veteran college players who profile as potential second-round picks.
  • June 28: All of Chris Paul’s $30 million contract is guaranteed on this date. If both sides agree, it can be pushed back. From all indications, Paul has been extremely professional and willing to work with the Warriors through all the possible options that may materialize with his flexible contract situation.

I’ve seen a lot of folks here say Dubs need a new, stronger voice on the bench to balance Kerr – something missing since Brown left. Looks like maybe the FO agrees

  2. We went heavy with developmental coaches after drafting a bunch of raw prospects. From what I can see, it’s really been Looney who’s benefited the most because I can’t really see any big difference that this coaching shift has brought.

I think it’d be better to forget about development and lean into defensive minded coaches. Vogel would be a dream assistant if he’s willing to go that way.

we need Andre clapping at guys when they come to the bench

  4. frank vogel come on down. Been asking for this guy to join the staff for some time now ever since brown left.

  5. Frank Vogel would be a great pick up for the coaching staff.

As for Klay, they’re not even allowed to have convos until the Finals are over (a new change with the new CBA that moves the date when teams can begin convos with their own free agents to as soon as the Finals are over instead of June 30th). It cannot be signed at any time despite what they write, because Klay became a free agent the day our season ended. So any characterization of talks or lack thereof would not only be made up (because again, they’re not allowed to even occur right now), but done in bad faith meant to drum up narratives and clicks.

Edit to add the applicable sections of the CBA for citation backup for the point about Klay:

From the Definitions section of the CBA on pg. 10:

    > “Season” or “NBA Season” means the period beginning on the first day of NBA training camp and ending immediately after the last game
    of the NBA Finals

From pg. 310 in the section on Free Agency:

    > a player who (1) will (or could as a result of the non-exercise of an Option or the exercise of an ETO) become an Unrestricted Free Agent or a Restricted Free Agent on the immediately following July 1, and (2) finished the Season on a Team’s roster, is free at any time beginning on the day following the last day of such Season to negotiate a Player Contract with such Team;

But how will the league rotate between the same coaches going after the same jobs?
