The Sacramento Kings Extend Mike Brown! | Locked On Kings

well it took a hell of a long time in a roller coaster ride but the Sacramento Kings have finally agreed to a contract extension with Mike Brown as their head coach of the future it’s the first time that that’s happened in quite a long time and now we can all exhale in Sacramento as the real work truly begins you are listening to an emergency episode of the locked on Kings podcast you are locked on Kings your daily Sacramento Kings podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day and now ladies and gentlemen it is that time time for another episode of Locked on Kings hello and welcome into locked on Kings your podcast hub for Sacramento Kings coverage all off seon long today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more right now new customers get $150 in bonus Bets with any winning $5 bet it’s 150 bucks with any winning five bet visit fanduel.com locked on to learn more my name is Matt George I have the privilege of being your host here I’m a Sacramento Sports Anchor and reporter for abc1 news and I’m not kidding you I just recently ran in from my vacation right just walked in my front door and I’m already r Rusty as hell it’s only gone a couple of days and I’m already a disaster at my job Peak behind the curtain here I just recorded a 3 five minute episode breaking down this Mike Brown contract ex uh extension without my microphone plugged in like what I I don’t I’ve never done that before ever in my podcasting career and I did it coming after a vacation on a freaking emergency episode lock on Kings I wasn’t planning on recording a podcast today like I was planning on just chilling after driving home from Southern California I know ew man what were you in Southern California I know it sucks down there but there are two places I love San Diego and Disneyland so took my family to Disneyland for a couple days had a great time got to kind of check out for a little bit even though all this crap with the Sacramento Kings was going on and we found out publicly the figures of how much the kings were trying to lowball Mike Brown and Yad y y I was able to avoid it for a little bit but I got back home tonight right as like the news about Mike Brown’s contract extension broke I’m like well crap got to record a podcast I already did it and it didn’t it I just there was no audio and I want to literally punch myself in the face thankfully I’m in a good mood because the Sacramento Kings finally finally got this Mike Brown contract extension done like thank God thank God and I always felt like we were gonna get here like it was just common sense that this needs that look this is insanity to even say Mike Brown now with this contract extension I’ll get into the numbers and and everything in just a second with this contract extension Mike Brown is the first coach since Rick Adelman to receive a second contract you know how insane that is not just the first coach to actually make the playoffs and end the 16year playoff drought 11 other coaches could not make the playoffs here in Sacramento but not only that 11 other coaches couldn’t even get to a second deal and that’s not a poor reflection on the coaches that looks worse for the Kings organization 100% because there have been some good names that have come through here in Sacramento right the first one that jumps to mind is Mike freaking Malone just won a championship with the Denver Nuggets I am and I will stand by my belief that had Mike Malone not been fired in the Kings not made that absolute stupid mistake then the playoff drought would have ended a long time ago I think Mike Brown and the Kings would have made the playoff That season with damont DeMarcus Cousins coming back from viral menitis right the the Mike Mike Malone deserved to make it to a second contract he’s good enough head coach and the Kings have had other decent names like Paul Westfall Paul Paul Westfall is a very successful head coach I know it didn’t work out here necessarily but it’s not like the Kings just had bums and Scrubs come through here in Sacramento they did have some rough patches right they did they have the Eric muscleman of the world they did have the Reggie thees they had the Keith smarts they had the Luke Walton but to go 16 Seasons 11 coaches without extending a single one of them that looks horrible for you that looks like you don’t know how to make a right decision that does that look makes it sound like you don’t know what even leadership is and what leadership you are looking for from your head coach to begin with the Statue or the definition of instability when we judge an organization in the draft we judge prospects in first round picks based off of if they get second contracts or not if a first round pick does not receive a second contract with the team essentially you can call them a bust well it might have left less to do with the player and more to do with the organization like to be fair Tyrese halberton didn’t make it to a second contract in Sacramento but he just got his second contract a massive payday with the Indiana Pacers or he’s he’s gonna get one I should say like that we know that was a successful draft pick for the Sacramento Kings for what it turned into but the amount of names that have come through Sacramento that didn’t make it to their second contracts Thomas Robinson Jimmer foret Nick stasis like blah blah blah blah blah like those are all failures for the Sacramento Kings and they’re judged accordingly and and RI to shreds accordingly Marvin Bagley right why are we not doing the same thing or or we should be doing the same thing for head coaches if you’ve had 11 straight head coaches and none of them made it to a second contract that looks way worse for you than it does all 11 of those head coaches but finally finally the Kings came to their senses they came to an agreement with Mike Brown now Mike to be fair adjusted his asking price a little bit because God I I I I I checked back in this morning that’s when I when I got back on social media from my vacation and I I saw the report from yesterday about the dollar figures and the Kings offering a competitive offer to Mike Brown that was like $3 million per year less than what he was looking for that 10 million base salary that Mike buen just got which is basically the market value now the fair market value for a good coach in the NBA I saw all that I just rolled my eyes I went God what are we doing here like it was embarrassing for both sides and we’ll get into that a little bit but they finally came to a deal through the 2026 2027 season so essentially three seasons next season and two seasons after that around $30 million but it’s the base salary is $8.5 million per year so Mike was looking for a base salary of 10 he did not get that he went down by a million and a half met the kings in the middle a little bit who are reportedly offering around seven but it can get up to 10 with bonuses incentives and I have to imagine those bonuses incentives are pretty achievable and pretty tied in with the expectation of Mike Brown to to to make him agree to the deal or to make him to come down and price with a base salary I have to imagine like those incentives and and bonuses include making the playoffs making it out of first round they’re success driven which like if I’m Mike Brown yeah I’m here to coach to be successful so and I expect to be successful so I’m betting on myself I’m betting that those are going to be $10 million Pere contracts I’m glad the Kings and Mike Brown finally came to an agreement it’s worth celebrating the road to get here was a freaking roller coaster it was like it was like Watt Avenue filled with potholes that’ll either like completely straighten out your spine or giving you Whiplash to the end of time like it it was unnecessary it was absolutely avoidable the Kings should have gotten to this point a long time ago but even if it didn’t get done a long time ago it they should have gotten to this point quietly and I don’t know why they did not but they got here thank God they got here because man I I tell you what when I I read the news about the dollar like this was just embarrassing for both sides it it really was was it was more embarrassing for the Sacramento Kings 100% because considering your track record and your history and the fact that you haven’t had a head coach since Rick Adelman to even make it to a second contract let alone make the playoffs right with the majority of those coaches and the majority of those playoff list Seasons coming in the vetron ownership era starting with the blunder of Mike Malone like this organization should have been willing to back up the freaking truck and get this deal done as soon as they were eligible to do so and I don’t know why the kings were trying to nickel and dime Mike that’s the saying right nickel and dime does any what what is change like what is what are coins does anybody have coins to like I don’t I could even I honestly don’t even know what a nickel looks like I don’t remember I don’t think I’m physically seen or held a nickel I’m sorry I’m vacation brain um where was I oh Mike Brown embarrassing both sides like this never should have been a situation and the fact that it happened all so out in the open and so publicly it it just again it looks bad for both sides and I think a lot of the public information truth be told was coming from Mike Brown’s side and we talked about this before before I left for vacation like it makes sense for them to do so if the kings are gonna lowball you screw you man you’re the Sacramento Kings you’ve been nothing without my client you’ve been nothing without my I’m assuming the information is coming from not Mike Brown it’s coming from his agent his his Camp you’ve been nothing without the Kings my client came in and made you relevant my client came in and in one year did what nobody’s been able to do for 16 years like yeah you’re going to pay him and yeah you’re going to look like idiots if you don’t if you if you bottle this and fumble this and make a mistake of this because Mike Kyle Madson on ESPN 1320 put it like perfectly just perfect like this was a layup this was a layup of a decision for the Sacramento Kings and for some reason it took them three or four runs through the layup line to actually make it like this did not have to be this difficult it’s not have to be this hard I’m not trying to rip the Kings too much because ultimately a deal was reached so we give them credit where credit’s due you got the job done you you you you win I guess a little bit higher but you you essentially made it very possible that Mike Brown’s gonna get that $10 million per your salary great congratulations on doing what you should have done all along I’m happy we got here because now we can turn our attention to what really freaking matters which is building a roster and and making your roster and your coaches philosophy getting them on the page and we’ll we’ll dive into that a little bit more in the next segment this was also embarrassing in in in some ways for Mike Brown too because Kenny carway talked about this really well on DLo and KC in Sacramento this week like this was also this is staying in Sacramento is also the best case scenario for Mike Brown and his Camp right like we don’t know if Mike Brown would ever get another coaching job if if Sacramento I should say head coaching job if Sacramento fell through I I don’t think people would clown him nearly as much as they clown the Sacramento Kings had this thing fell fallen through and I don’t think we really in that big of danger of it ever falling through but it still just did not need to happen this way but like Mike wants to stay here Mike wants this to work out for two reasons number one again this this might be his his last true shot and number two Mike knows like dearn Fox knows and like these players know that if you win here in Sacramento you’re freaking immortalized and I and I think that matters as much money matters sure Money Matters more but Mike knows that if he actually builds a champion here in Sacramento if he actually brings a championship to Sacramento which unfortunately Rick Adelman was never able to do and I I idolized Rick Adelman I would build a statue to that man outside the golden one Center if I could the best he did was losing in the Western Conference Finals during those Glory years not his fault we know what happened but regardless you get my point if Mike actually could bring a title to Sacramento that man is the king the mayor the Lord the the the the emperor whatever you want to call it like Sacramento is his City he owns it he owns it all and we we pay falty to Mike Brown for the rest of time like that’s that’s the reality of the situation and Mike knows that so Mike knows that not only is Sacramento the best for his career because it’s probably the last main shot he’s going to get and not only of course is the money good and money important because you want to capitalize on what’s you’re worth and more importantly what the value of a head coach is in in the modern NBA with this new TV deal looming you want to be the coach that finally got the job done in Sacramento because not only are you immortalized here I think in the NBA you’re immortalized too like you are the coach that finally brought a title to Sacramento yeah welcome to the Basketball Hall of Fame let’s let’s work on your statue right now like we’ll get you a jacket we’ll get you whatever you want you you you turn the Kings into true Championship winners Mike it didn’t have to happen this way I’m glad ultimately the deal got done and now the reality is this wasn’t a significant step of this Kings off season right the the kings are still at the startline of the offseason what what we just went through were weeks of preliminary races or qualifying races this job we wi into this offseason knowing that this deal needed to get done and was going to get done and should have gotten done and and and and we just expected like it was never a question Mike Brown was going to get extended Mike Brown was going to be head coach of the Kings going forward all right now let’s talk about Malik Monk and fixing this roster that was always what this was about now we’re just at the start line you got your head coach you got him secured okay great now let’s get him and his philosophy and the roster all on the same page and we’ll talk about what that looks like and specifically how Mike has done kind of his end of of the bargain and now the Kings need to do theirs even though they just paid them I’ll explain in just a second like I said at the top of the show today’s episode of the lockdown Kings podcast is brought to you by FanDuel it is winner take all time in the NBA and the NHL the NBA playoffs and Stanley Cup playoffs we’re in to be talking about and focusing on all offseason long which is bque Monk and the draft and a potential Brandon Ingram Kyle kosma trade or addressing your your roster holes especially when it comes to the wing position right all these things that we’ve expected to be talking about and breaking down over the last couple weeks now that we got this coaching stuff out of the way let’s get back to that right I’ve talked about this a little bit before and i’ I’ve seen the feedback I’ve I’ve gone into detail already about how the Kings and Mike Brown need to get on the same page and I don’t think it takes Mike Brown adapting I think Mike Brown’s already adapted I think Mike has made it known as the only guy who actually knows what winning looks like in this freaking City granted Monty McNair and the Houston Rockets blah blah blah under Daryl myy but Mike Brown knows what it takes to actually win on the basketball court now it’s up to the Kings to build a roster and bring a roster in more fits the philosophy that Mike Brown is trying to implement so I’ve been talking about that a lot and and one of the main comments I’ve seen and it doesn’t surprise me at all and I’m actually glad I’ve gotten that comment because it allows me to kind of break down uh this on on the podcast tonight just like in the draft there’s a debate in the draft of best talent available versus best fit right and both sides will forever be at odds it will forever be a conversation it’s pretty subjective to where the team is at at the certain situation who that Talent is versus what’s the position in need and blah blah blah blah blah it’s it’s it’s like a not it’s not a black and white argument it will forever exist and forever happen Lord knows we’ve had it way too many times here on this podcast over the years very similar to that there’s a debate in coaching or around coaching of does the coach bring in their philosophy and Implement their philosophy and mold their roster and their team to their philosophy or do they adapt and adjust their philosophy to their players and their strengths now typically I think Common Sense would more lean you towards the ladder because look the NBA is a players League it’s a lot easier to replace a coach and find a coach with a matching philosophy to what you believe your roster is supposed to play than it is to completely replace or change a roster right it’s easy to move on from one that it is from 12 or 15 right that being said Mike has already done that think about it Mike has already adop adapted his philosophies and molded his philosophies around the strength of his roster he’s done that already he is not trying to to shove a a square peg into a round hole with this team think about it Mike Brown is hired gets this roster and and what does he do the first thing he does right from the very beginning is he builds an offensive philosophy that highlights the primary strength and facilitating and versatility of damont sabonis right All-Star caliber Center okay let’s run a fle free flowing dribble handoff style uh offense on the perimeter or in the high post through deont sabonis and take advant AG of his excellent passing ability we also trying to put him in positions to score every once in a while and trying to highlight The Supporting Cast of our roster trying to get three-point opportunities through dhos for Kevin herder trying to implement a rookie in Keegan Murray and and and turn him into the the best three-point shooter having the most made three-pointers in NBA history as a rookie right on the top of that building a full an offensive system around dear and fox that allows flock to Branch out and become the three lay three LEL score that is capable of being attacking the rim from the mid-range winning clutch Player of the Year his first year with Mike Brown here in Sacramento this last season having a Renaissance and a and an explosion from three-point range on a higher volume and knocking down more threes and having more confidence in that shot right mik monk is another perfect example right he gets Malik Monk and and gives Malik the keys doesn’t change Malik but gives Malik the keys in his system to allow Malik to blossom into the player that should have won Sixth Man of the Year twice but this player that is now a hot commodity around the League this player who is going to get a Payday hopefully to stay here in Sacramento but this player who went from a guy who nearly was out of the league and struggling in Charlotte to kind of turn things around and Drew some attention with the Los Angeles Lakers to oh no this man’s legit should be a starter and is gonna get paid Mike put him in a position to do that and to truly showcase who he is and who he can be as an NBA Talent so Mike has come in right away and built or molded how he wants to play to the talent on this roster that was year one and what happened the Kings made the playoffs they made the playoffs by having the number one offense in the league and then they got into the postseason and what Mike has been saying all along rang true the offense struggled the defense wasn’t good enough to carry the offense through when the offense struggled in a more physical and defensive minded playoff time Mike Brown has been consistent with the fact that he does not have any interest in being a team that offensively can put up a bunch of points and be super exciting and League the league in offense and then get to the playoffs and flame out in the first or second round because as the cliche goes defense wins championships so now Mike takes the roster who it’s his decision as well as the the front office’s decision to essentially run it back and it makes sense why you bring this roster back and Mike says I’m willing to sacrifice a little on the offensive end to try and improve defensively ultimately the Kings win two fewer games they missed the playoffs it sucks a lot of that has to do with injuries a lot of that has to do with figuring out his philosophy but he tries to implement defensive changes with this roster and he turns this offensive-minded roster with a Sprinkle of defensive Talent into a tough 15 Talent def or top 15 defensive team who leaned heavily on the defensive end of the floor the final third of the season to give them a chance with Malik monk being out and Kevin herder being out so Mike after the first year of adapting has now tried to implement what he believes what he knows it takes to win and he’s coming from a background of winning a ring with Greg papovich in in in San Antonio winning rings with Steve Kerr in Golden State and being part of that Dynasty also he coached LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers to the to the NBA finals unfortunately lost to the San Antonio Spurs but regardless Mike knows what it takes to get there and what he’s telling you is this roster is good but it can be great and it needs to be great by us playing this way here’s a full season of us trying to play this way and we’ve seen the guys that have stepped up and made a name for themselves and can do that like a Keon Ellis for example and we’ve seen guys that cannot hang or are not cutting it like a Kevin herder for example Mike’s giving you the context that you need so Mike has done his job as a coach he’s come in taken this roster on the surface made them successful tried to build upon it and as he’s built upon it the team has gone in the wrong direction or struggled to build because the the roster and the talent on the roster does not fit the philosophy of your head coach and I promise you the Kings do not have hesitations of bringing Mike Brown Brown back and signing Brown to an extension because they didn’t agree or believe in his philosophy they had hesitations because of money they had hesitations because of missing the playoffs last year but the Kings clearly believe in what Mike Brown is is building here and like I said Mike’s resume speaks for itself he knows what it takes to actually win if he’s telling you defense defense defense with an offense still being good but sacrif in a little of that offensive Firepower to go out and get more defensive minded defensive capable players that turn us into hopefully a top 10 offense and top 10 defense which is pretty standard for an NBA champion if that’s what he’s saying it takes now it’s your job Monty McNair now it’s the job of the Sacramento Kings to actually go out and get that job done you said it yourself this team is built to win right now but the pieces aren’t fitting the puzzles off some of the bricks are bad you’re missing supplies you’re trying to win right now you have your foundation you have your cornerstones but you’re still missing something whether you think it’s a Brandon Ingram or Kyle kosma big swing if Mike Brown agrees with you and go out and get that guy great whether you think it’s more fill out the roster type Talent so that you’re not having question marks that you’re eighth or ninth man and wondering if Sasha venkov is going to do anything or Chris DTE is going to figure it out like if that’s the route whatever route you take as long as you and Mike Brown you being Monty Monty and Mike Brown are in agreement that this is the route that they should go that those are the players that Mike wants that fit his philosophy at that point if it doesn’t work we know who to point to we know who to blame right maybe Mike maybe this isn’t the right route for this team because if the Kings go defensive focused sacrifice trade away maybe they trade away haven’t Hur her maybe they move on from Sasha venkov too early and if it doesn’t work and this offense is suddenly in the pits because they went too defensive focused that looks bad on Mike Brown and Mike has said look if if that I’ll own it like if I’m wrong I’ll own it that’s the correct route to take at this point so roll up your sleeves Kings the real work is finally about to begin so we got the draft coming up we got Malik Monk’s future still to talk about that’s up in the air we have big potential trades with Brandon Ingram and Kyle kosma I’m going to have a podcast here coming up with Jake Madison of the lock on Pelicans podcast he and I are going to discuss potential moves centered around Brandon Ingram and what that package would look like and what the Pelicans could be asking for I have zero really interest in Zack LaVine but markets are changing Zack lavine’s value has completely fallen off a cliff I don’t think the king should be interested at all but just goes to show anything can change any given time especially with the desperation of teams so a lot can still happen this offseason and now thank God this coaching nonsense this this Fiasco the circus is behind us Mike Brown is here for the foreseeable future the layup has finally been made and we can focus in on on this offseason I have I have more great content coming for you we got we got to look back at the draft too I still think the kings are trading the 13th pick but we have more draft analysts and guys uh to to to bring in and to talk about this and break it down look at specific um prospects I’m seeing more and more mock drafts that are pegging the Kings to go out and get a guard which if if guards are the best talent around that position I understand that what I don’t agree with is some of these explanations in these mock drafts that the Kings would draft a guard to replace Malik monk which is just absolutely stupid in my mind because if you’re looking to replace Malik monk with a freaking rookie guard then you’re screwed you are now you might out of necessity be forced to because Malik leaves but if the kings are taking a guard at 13 that’s because one there weren’t any suitors for the 13th pick in a trade that you liked and two they’re the best T Talent available at that time and then you’ll take that talent and figure it out from there if that’s the route the Kings take fantastic fine great take that route I hope they don’t I don’t think they should they think there’s potentially Wings in the draft that they could go out and get I still think they should trade the the pick first and foremost but we’ll dive into that we’ll discuss that so much more of this offseason still to get into still to break down still to talk about keep it locked right here on locked on Kings all offseason long to get through it thank you to all of you who are patient through the last few days and the circus of this uh of this period of time like this uh Mike Brown contract negotiation Saga I needed the vacation trust me I needed the recharge I needed the reset but I’m back I’m ready to tackle the rest of this offseason and going into this next season uh so I appreciate 1. of course it " took a hellaova long time " matt …. theres millions of dollars in play here , its not an overnight negotiation , and they did it !

  2. Might be an unpopular opinion but wrong move. Mike Brown hasn’t shown he deserves to be among the highest paid coaches in the league. Especially coming off a disappointing season of missing the playoffs once again. He is a stubborn veteran coach who lacks flexibility and the ability to make adjustments. Once the high of ending the playoff drought last season goes away, it’s going to show that he is more of a Mark Jackson than a Steve Kerr. The bar is set so low in Sacramento that he is perceived as a great coach. Although the team made the playoffs last season they got bounced in the 1st rd with a clearly better team.

  3. Be aware, Matt, Brown isnt a offensive Guru. His assistance coaches did it. Kuzma nor Ingram's defense below average.😂
